The best preservation method depends on the finished project. Press sound, naturally flat leaves for cards, scrapbooks and framed art; use a glycerin soak when you need pliable foliage for wreaths or arrangements; and choose silica gel when retaining a leaf’s three-dimensional form matters and you want a faster drying method. Wax techniques can add a decorative coating, but they require careful heat handling.

No method guarantees that every leaf will keep its original autumn color. Species, moisture, maturity and the treatment itself all affect the result. Test a few leaves first when color is important, and select the method for the physical quality your project needs.

Choose the preservation method by the finished project

Preservation is a trade-off between flatness, flexibility, shape, color and handling time. The sources below describe different procedures rather than a controlled head-to-head experiment, so the comparison is a planning guide, not a ranking of guaranteed results.

Method Best for Shape and feel Color expectations Typical time in the cited instructions Supplies and heat considerations
Pressing Cards, bookmarks, scrapbooks, collages and framed work Flat and dry; fragile if handled roughly Often attractive, but fading or browning is possible Several days between newspapers in the 2021 Illinois Extension instructions; 3–4 weeks between wax paper in a weighted book in the 2020 UF/IFAS instructions Paper or wax paper, a book or press and weights; no heat required
Glycerin Wreaths, garlands, sprays and other dimensional decorations Pliable rather than crisp May not retain all color; some treatments can turn leaves and stems brown Three to five days for the Illinois Extension leaf soak; several weeks of drying for the UF/IFAS branch method Glycerin, water and (for one UF/IFAS recipe) powdered citric acid; no heating of the finished foliage
Silica gel Leaves or flowers where retaining form is more important than flattening Dry with more three-dimensional structure than pressed leaves Variable; follow the product directions Typically 2–7 days in the 2020 UF/IFAS craft instructions Silica gel and a sealable container; no cooking heat
Warm wax Decorative leaves and coated displays Coated and relatively rigid Depends on the leaf and wax; test first Not stated in the cited Illinois Extension reference Warm wax or paraffin and heat-safe equipment; melted paraffin can cause severe burns
Wax-paper ironing Quickly flattening leaves for simple displays Flat and sealed between waxed paper Variable; excessive heat can damage the leaf Not stated in the cited Texas Parks and Wildlife instructions Waxed paper and a medium-hot iron; supervise the process

Start with leaves that can survive preservation

Gather leaves soon after they reach the color you want. Choose clean, dry specimens with intact edges, firm tissue and no obvious mold, insect damage, wet spots or tears. A leaf that is already limp, waterlogged or decomposing is unlikely to improve in a book or a solution.

Match the leaf to the method

  • Pressing: Select leaves that are naturally flat or have a simple profile. Thick midribs and curled margins can prevent even contact with the paper.
  • Glycerin: Use blemish-free leaves attached to a small branch when following the UF/IFAS branch procedure. The stem must be able to absorb the solution.
  • Silica gel: Choose leaves with enough structure to hold their shape and leave room around each specimen in the container.
  • Wax: Use completely dry leaves for dipping. Moisture can sputter when it contacts hot wax.

Clean and condition the material

Brush away soil and surface debris with a soft, dry brush. If a leaf is damp from rain or dew, let it air-dry on a towel before pressing or treating it. Do not seal damp material in a book, bag or container: trapped moisture encourages staining and mold. Keep a few extra leaves from each species so you can test the method without risking the entire collection.

Press leaves for flat crafts

Pressing is one of the easiest ways to preserve leaves and flowers when a flat component is the goal. It removes moisture while holding the leaf between smooth surfaces. Two reputable extension instructions use different time frames, so use the duration associated with the exact setup you choose.

Newspaper method: several days

Illinois Extension horticulture educator Brittnay Haag describes placing fall leaves between newspapers for several days to dry. The newspaper absorbs moisture and can be replaced if it becomes damp.

  1. Lay a sheet of newspaper on a flat surface.
  2. Arrange dry leaves in a single layer, leaving space between overlapping edges. Smooth each leaf with your fingers.
  3. Cover the leaves with another sheet of newspaper.
  4. Place a heavy, flat object on top. Add a rigid board beneath the stack if the weight is uneven.
  5. Leave the stack undisturbed for several days. Check one leaf; if it still bends damply or feels cool and soft, continue drying.
  6. Move fully dry leaves with tweezers or clean, dry hands and store them flat until you craft with them.

Wax-paper-and-book method: 3–4 weeks

A UF/IFAS craft guide places leaves between wax paper inside a book, adds weight and allows 3–4 weeks for drying. Liquid can seep from leaves and soil the book, so use a book you do not value or protect it with additional layers of paper.

  1. Put each leaf between sheets of wax paper. Leave a margin around the specimen so moisture cannot reach the book’s pages.
  2. Close the book and place it under a heavy, flat object.
  3. Keep the stack in a dry location for 3–4 weeks.
  4. Open the book carefully and check that the leaf is dry and firm before removing it.
  5. Store finished leaves in a flat folder between clean sheets of paper.

Do not combine the two schedules into a single promise. Newspaper thickness, leaf moisture, humidity and the weight applied all change drying speed. The cited procedures intentionally give different durations.

Prevent common pressing failures

  • Wrinkles: Reposition the leaf while it is still slightly flexible, then close the stack evenly.
  • Brown stains on pages: Use extra absorbent paper or a disposable book; some leaves release liquid as they dry.
  • Mold: Remove the leaf, discard wet paper and restart with dry material in a low-humidity place.
  • Cracking: Handle the specimen only after it has cooled to room temperature and support it from underneath.
  • Uneven edges: Use a heavier, flatter weight or press fewer leaves at a time.

Use glycerin when flexibility matters

Glycerin replaces some of the moisture in plant tissue, leaving treated foliage more pliable than conventionally dried leaves. That makes it useful for dimensional decorations that must bend around a wreath form or hang without shattering. It is not a universal color-preserver: UF/IFAS notes that leaves may not retain all their color, and its decorative-materials publication warns that glycerin treatments can turn leaves and stems brown.

UF/IFAS branch recipe

This recipe is for a small branch with blemish-free leaves. It uses 1 cup glycerin, 2.5 cups hot water and 1/2 teaspoon powdered citric acid. The treated branch is soaked through its stems and then allowed to dry for several weeks.

  1. Cut a small branch with healthy, unblemished leaves. Recut the stem ends so they can take up liquid.
  2. Mix 1 cup glycerin with 2.5 cups hot water. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon powdered citric acid until dissolved.
  3. Place the stems in the solution. Keep the leaves above the liquid where possible so they do not become submerged unnecessarily.
  4. Leave the branch in the solution while the stems absorb it, following the UF/IFAS procedure.
  5. Remove the branch and let it dry for several weeks in a ventilated location away from direct sun.
  6. Check flexibility before arranging. If the foliage is still wet or sticky, allow additional drying time.

Illinois Extension fall-leaf recipe

Illinois Extension’s October 2024 newsletter gives a different recipe for fall leaves: mix 1 part glycerin with 2 parts water and submerge the leaves for 3–5 days. This is a separate procedure from the UF/IFAS branch recipe, not a substitute measurement.

Protect the color you actually want

Glycerin is best treated as a flexibility method with an uncertain color outcome. Test a few leaves from the same tree, using the exact solution and timing you plan to use. Compare them after they have dried for the full period. If a specific red, orange or yellow must remain recognizable, pressing or silica gel may be a better starting point, but neither guarantees the original shade.

Dry leaves in silica gel when form matters

Silica gel removes moisture while supporting a leaf’s contours, making it an option for projects that need more volume than a pressed specimen provides. UF/IFAS describes placing leaves or flowers in a sealable container with silica gel and gives 2–7 days as a typical duration. Product instructions can vary, so the package directions control the amount of gel, container setup and timing.

  1. Choose a clean, dry, sealable container with enough room for the leaves and a layer of silica gel around them.
  2. Pour a base layer of gel into the container.
  3. Place leaves so they do not overlap. Gently cover them with more gel, supporting delicate edges rather than compressing them.
  4. Seal the container and label it with the date and the leaf species.
  5. Check after two days, then continue up to the source’s typical 2–7 day window as needed. Follow the product’s directions if they specify a different period.
  6. Remove the leaves carefully, brush away loose crystals and allow them to equilibrate in a dry room before mounting.

Silica gel is optional for simple flat crafts. A book, paper and weight are sufficient for pressing, while silica gel adds a separate drying system and an enclosed container.

Understand wax options and heat hazards

Warm-wax dipping

Illinois Extension mentions dipping dried leaves in warm wax as a decorative treatment. The coating can add sheen and stiffness, but the source does not state a universal wax temperature or drying time. Use only equipment intended for craft wax, keep the work area clear and never leave heated wax unattended.

Wax paper and a medium-hot iron

Texas Parks and Wildlife describes placing leaves between waxed paper and pressing with a medium-hot iron. This can flatten and seal a leaf without immersing it in a pot of wax.

  1. Place a dry leaf between two sheets of waxed paper.
  2. Set the packet on a heat-safe surface.
  3. With the iron set to medium-hot, press briefly and move continuously rather than holding the iron in one place.
  4. Allow the packet to cool before checking the seal. Trim excess waxed paper after the leaf is fully cool.

Use adult supervision around the iron. Texas Parks and Wildlife specifically warns that melted paraffin is extremely hot and may cause burns; do not handle liquid wax with bare hands or place it near children, pets or flammable materials.

Store and display preserved leaves

Before mounting

  • Make sure the leaf is fully dry and at room temperature.
  • Handle pressed leaves by the midrib or support them with tweezers.
  • Keep glycerin-treated foliage away from surfaces that could be stained until it is no longer damp or sticky.
  • Photograph or label species and collection date if the display is educational.

For cards and scrapbooks

Use pressed leaves because their flat backs sit against paper. Apply adhesive sparingly along the midrib and larger veins, or use photo corners so the specimen can be removed without tearing. Test the adhesive on a spare leaf first.

For frames

Mount leaves on an acid-free backing and leave enough clearance so the glass does not crush raised veins. A deep frame is preferable for glycerin-treated or silica-dried material. Keep framed work out of direct sunlight and away from damp exterior walls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For wreaths and hanging arrangements

Glycerin-treated foliage is easier to bend around wire or a form than brittle pressed leaves. Secure stems gently and avoid placing the arrangement beside radiators, candles or cooking appliances. Silica-dried leaves can be used for volume, but their edges may still break if repeatedly flexed.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely cause What to do next
Leaf remains soft after pressing Insufficient drying time or high humidity Replace damp paper, increase weight and continue the selected newspaper or book schedule.
Leaf turns unexpectedly brown after glycerin Color change associated with the treatment or the foliage type Do not extend the soak automatically. Test a different specimen or switch to pressing or silica gel.
Edges curl in silica gel Uneven support or insufficient coverage Reposition the leaf with gel supporting the margins and follow the product’s directions.
Book pages are stained Liquid seeped from the leaf Use disposable or protected books and add absorbent layers in future batches.
Wax smokes or smells burnt Excessive heat Stop heating, move the equipment away from flammables and allow it to cool before restarting at a lower setting.
Finished leaf breaks during mounting Over-drying, thin tissue or rough handling Support the specimen from below, use a deeper frame or choose pliable glycerin-treated foliage for the next project.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Need a flat surface? Start with pressing.
  2. Need stems or leaves that bend? Choose a glycerin recipe and accept that color may change; test first.
  3. Need the original contours? Consider silica gel and follow its product directions.
  4. Want a wax coating? Use only dry leaves and plan for heat protection.
  5. Is exact color critical? Preserve test specimens before processing the full collection.
  6. Will children participate? Let them gather, arrange and label leaves, but keep hot wax and irons under direct adult control.

With those decisions made before treatment, the preservation process becomes predictable: flat leaves for paper-based work, pliable foliage for dimensional designs, and supported drying when shape is the priority. The final color remains a property of the individual leaf and method, not a guarantee attached to any recipe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I preserve every fall leaf in the same way?

No. Naturally flat leaves are the easiest candidates for pressing, while thick, contoured or flexible foliage may suit silica gel or glycerin better. Test specimens because species and treatments respond differently.

Which glycerin recipe should I use?

Use one complete, attributed procedure rather than combining them. UF/IFAS gives 1 cup glycerin, 2.5 cups hot water and 1/2 teaspoon powdered citric acid for a small branch, with several weeks of drying. Illinois Extension gives 1 part glycerin to 2 parts water for submerged leaves for 3–5 days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is silica gel required to preserve leaves?

No. It is an optional method when retaining three-dimensional form matters. Simple flat projects can be made with paper, a book and weight.

How can I keep preserved leaves from fading?

No cited method guarantees original color. Limit direct sunlight, keep displays dry and test the exact leaf and treatment before processing the full batch.
