Preserve an original Apple-1 as a fragile historical artifact, not as ordinary vintage electronics. The safest plan is to document its condition and provenance, avoid routine power-on demonstrations, support it in a custom-fitted enclosure, control light and environmental changes, and have a computer conservator approve any electrical intervention.

Only about 200 Apple-1 computers, plus prototypes, were made. Their age, exposed construction, historical modifications and scarcity mean that a loose connector, peeling coating or undocumented replacement can cause permanent loss of evidence as well as physical damage.

Why an Apple-1 needs artifact-level care

The Apple-1 combines fiberglass and epoxy board materials, metal components, plastics, coatings, wood, paper and attached accessories. Those materials respond differently to heat, moisture, light, vibration and handling. A board can look stable while a socket, coating edge, solder joint or handwritten marking is already vulnerable.

Its rarity makes every original detail significant. Achim Baqué, an Apple-1 owner and lender, has warned that “the risk of damaging the computer is very high” because parts can break off and the coating can peel during transport. Preparation for an exhibition can take weeks or months, and a custom protective box was built for the Dryden Apple-1 loan to the ZKM exhibition that ran from July 14, 2018, through February 10, 2019.

Document identity and condition before touching it

Create a complete condition record

Make the record before every move, not just when the computer first enters a collection. Photograph the board front and back in overall views and in close-ups. Include the coating, edge losses, cracks, corrosion, sockets, chips, switches, connectors, keyboard, cassette interface, power supply, cables, labels and handwritten marks.

Write a narrative condition description alongside the photographs. Note loose or missing components, lifted traces, brittle insulation, previous cleaning, repairs, replacement parts and any areas that flex. Record whether dust, oxidation or residue is present without attempting to remove it during the survey.

Record provenance and the exact loan contents

List every item that travels with the board: keyboard, cassette interface, power supply, cables, case, manuals, labels and accessories. Record who owns each item, where it has been stored, prior exhibitions, repairs and known changes. Photograph packing materials and labels before dismantling them.

Apple-1 boards do not use a consistent regular serial-number system. Identification therefore depends on photographs and distinctive component-level details. A registry entry can support the record, but it does not replace your own images and descriptions. For example, Apple-1 Registry record #43 was last updated July 12, 2026 and records a museum display history, component changes and a 2024 auction result; those details are useful only when they match the physical board in hand.

Assign a condition and documentation number

Use an internal object or loan number on every report, photograph set and container label. Keep the number separate from the artifact itself; do not attach adhesive labels to the board, coating, keyboard or cables. Save original-resolution images and a read-only copy of the signed condition report so later changes can be detected.

Decide whether the Apple-1 should be powered on

Make display without operation the default

Routine operation is not required to communicate the Apple-1’s historical importance. A static display with clear interpretation avoids electrical stress, heat and accidental damage to irreplaceable parts. If visitors need to see software running, use an emulator, replica or separate demonstration computer rather than the original board.

Treat any power-on as a specialist intervention

There is no universal safe electrical test procedure for every surviving Apple-1. Power supplies, modifications and component condition differ. A computer conservator should inspect the complete system and approve a written plan before energizing it.

  1. Inspect first. Check the power supply, board, sockets, connectors, cables and modifications for cracking, corrosion, contamination, loose parts or unsafe insulation. Photograph the pre-intervention state.
  2. Define the intervention. State why operation is necessary, which components will be connected, how long the test will last and what conditions will end it. Choose the least invasive setup.
  3. Use controlled power. Use current-limited, surge-protected equipment selected by the conservator. Do not substitute a modern power supply or replacement board merely because it is convenient.
  4. Monitor continuously. Watch for abnormal heat, smell, sound, smoke, visible movement, screen instability or unexpected electrical readings. Keep a person at the controls for the entire test.
  5. Stop at the first anomaly. Disconnect safely if any warning sign appears. Do not repeatedly cycle power to diagnose an uncertain fault.
  6. Document the result. Record the equipment, settings, duration, observations, operator and any change in condition. Update the condition report before returning the Apple-1 to storage or display.

A functioning museum example shows that operation can be achieved, but it does not establish a safe procedure for every specimen. Treat each power-on as a new, documented conservation decision.

Build a rigid, padded and secure display enclosure

Support the board without flexing it

Use a rigid, padded, custom-fitted support that holds the board horizontally and prevents flexing. The support should carry the weight through stable areas of the board and keep connectors, sockets, component leads and coating edges from bearing load. A conservator or mount maker should verify that the board cannot slide, twist or vibrate when the case is moved.

Do not rest the Apple-1 on loose foam, pressure points, adhesive pads or materials that shed particles. Never clamp across components or tighten a fastener against the board. Keep the keyboard, cassette interface and power supply on separately supported mounts unless a conservator has designed a joined support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose case materials carefully

Use chemically inert, conservation-tested materials where possible. Materials that release acids, plasticizers, solvents or other vapors can tarnish metals, embrittle plastics or stain coatings inside a closed case. The support should be removable and reversible, with no permanent glue or drilling.

Protect against handling, dust and theft

A rigid, lockable case reduces accidental contact, vibration, dust and unauthorized access. Design the case so staff can inspect the object without lifting it by hand. Provide a stable base, protected hinges and a controlled opening procedure. Keep keys or access codes restricted to trained staff, and document every opening.

For transport, a dedicated box should immobilize the case and absorb shock without pressing on the artifact. The Dryden Apple-1’s custom box accommodated the mainboard, cassette interface and keyboard as a single protected loan package; the principle is to fit the container to the artifact rather than force the artifact into a generic carton.

Control light, ultraviolet radiation and heat

Keep the Apple-1 out of direct sunlight. Use the lowest practical visible light that still allows visitors to see the board, and remove or block ultraviolet and infrared radiation. Hot lamps should remain outside the case; provide airflow around the enclosure so lighting does not create a warm pocket.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Light damage accumulates and is generally irreversible. The Library of Congress states that, in most cases, conservation treatment cannot reverse light damage. This matters not only for the board and coating but also for stamps, labels, paper, wood and handwritten markings. Turn display lighting off whenever the gallery is closed, and limit the total exhibition duration when possible.

Measure illuminance and ultraviolet exposure rather than relying on the apparent brightness of a lamp. Review readings after installation and after any lighting change. If the case warms noticeably when lights are on, reduce the load, move the fixtures or improve ventilation before displaying the object for visitors.

Set stable temperature and relative humidity

Stability is more important than chasing a single “perfect” number. Rapid changes make dissimilar materials expand, contract or exchange moisture at different rates, stressing coatings, joints and layered construction. Keep the case and room away from heat sources, exterior windows, radiators, vents and doors that create repeated swings.

Guidance What it says How to apply it to an Apple-1
General museum collections guidance Most collections should not remain above 65% RH or below 35% RH for significant periods. Use these limits as excursion boundaries, not as permission for rapid cycling between them.
Plastics-care guidance Many plastic objects favor approximately 30–50% RH, with RH below 65% to reduce mould risk. Plastic parts and insulation may benefit from the drier portion of a stable range, provided other materials are not stressed.
Apple-1-specific decision The board contains fiberglass/epoxy, metals, plastics, coatings, wood and paper. Have a conservator set the final case target after examining the particular specimen and its accessories.

These ranges are preventive-conservation guidance, not a substitute for a survey of the individual computer. If the case uses a microclimate or buffering material, validate its performance with data rather than assuming it will hold the target.

Monitor the case and the room continuously

Place a calibrated thermo-hygrometer or data logger inside the display case or microclimate, and another in the surrounding room. Log temperature and RH at regular intervals; add illuminance and ultraviolet readings where practical. Environmental monitors and data loggers are standard tools in museum preventive conservation.

Review trends and excursions instead of reacting to one isolated reading. A slowly rising RH trend, repeated overnight temperature peak or sudden change after a door opens can reveal a building or case problem before visible damage occurs. Set alert thresholds that prompt a trained person to inspect the case, but do not let an automated alarm trigger an unplanned opening or power-on.

Handle and transport the Apple-1 conservatively

Use a controlled handoff procedure

  1. Limit handling to trained staff and name the responsible handler for each move.
  2. Clear the route before lifting. Remove obstacles, secure doors and keep visitors away from the path.
  3. Support the fitted enclosure with two hands or a cart designed for its weight. Never carry the board loose.
  4. Keep the board horizontal unless the mount was specifically designed for another orientation.
  5. Photograph the packed condition, fasteners, seals and labels before the container leaves the room.
  6. Record each handoff, destination, time and condition check. Photograph the case again on arrival before opening it.

Do not unpack immediately after a major temperature or humidity change. Let the sealed container acclimatize under the conservator’s written procedure, then inspect for condensation, displaced supports or new coating loss before opening fully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan an international loan early

Arrange insurance, security, customs documents and re-import paperwork before the shipment. Allow time for inspections and questions about the artifact’s materials and value. The Apple-1 exhibition account describes weeks of paperwork and customs work, and records a real transport incident in which coating peeled. Build schedule margin for a condition check at every border or custody change.

Clean or restore only for a documented conservation reason

Do not polish the board, scrub oxidation, remove historically meaningful modifications, replace parts for cosmetic uniformity or attach a later keyboard simply to make the display look complete. Surface grime, altered components and wear can be evidence of the computer’s history.

The Dryden Apple-1 was intentionally not cleaned, and its 1976 additions were preserved. Achim Baqué has stated that “restoration would only be done if the artifact were endangered or badly damaged.” That approach protects original evidence while leaving open the possibility of intervention when a loose part, active corrosion, failing coating or other hazard threatens the artifact.

When treatment is justified, obtain a written rationale from a conservator experienced with electronic heritage. Record the materials, methods, removed parts, replacements, photographs and reversibility. Keep removed components with the object and label them; never discard them as obsolete hardware.

Display choice Strength Main risk or burden When it fits
Original board, no operation Preserves the actual artifact while avoiding electrical stress. Visitors cannot experience live operation. Most long-term displays and loans.
Original board with separate emulator or replica Provides interaction without exposing the original to routine use. Requires clear labeling so visitors understand what is simulated. Public galleries that need a hands-on element.
Original board in an open bench display Offers close visual access and easy inspection. Higher dust, handling, vibration and security risk; environmental control is weaker. Short, supervised study sessions rather than unattended exhibition.
Original board in a sealed or buffered case Improves protection from dust, handling and environmental swings. Requires inert materials, monitoring and planned access. Long-term display or travel.
Power-on demonstration of the original Shows historical function directly. Highest electrical and thermal risk, plus operator and documentation burden. Only when a conservator has approved a specific, limited intervention.
Conservation treatment before display Can stabilize an endangered or badly damaged object. May alter original evidence and must be reversible where possible. When deterioration threatens the artifact, not for cosmetic uniformity.

The Smithsonian Institution’s preventive-conservation guidance frames exhibition as a balance among stability, cost, sustainability and accessibility. For an Apple-1, a replica or emulator often supplies accessibility at a much lower risk than operating the original.

Use a practical exhibition checklist

Before installation

  • Complete and sign the condition report with front, back and detail photographs.
  • Confirm provenance, object number, loan contents and insurance.
  • Have a conservator approve the support, case materials, lighting and environmental targets.
  • Install and test data loggers in both case and room.
  • Verify locks, alarms, labels, emergency contacts and a written response plan.

During display

  • Check the object and logger trends on a defined schedule.
  • Keep direct sun and heat-producing lamps away from the case.
  • Turn display lighting off when the gallery closes.
  • Restrict case openings to trained staff and record each opening.
  • Inspect for new coating loss, corrosion, condensation, loose parts, unusual odor or case movement.

After the exhibition or loan

  • Photograph the object in the case before unpacking and compare it with the baseline report.
  • Record environmental data, incidents, alarms, repairs and all custody changes.
  • Inspect the support and packing materials for compression, debris or chemical change.
  • Update the condition report and retain the complete file with the artifact’s provenance.

What to do when something goes wrong

Condensation or a sudden RH excursion

Do not open the case repeatedly or move the Apple-1 directly into a different climate. Notify the conservator, stabilize the room, preserve the logger data and follow the written acclimatization procedure. Photograph any visible moisture before intervention.

A loose component, peeled coating or new crack

Stop handling and, if safe, stop any display movement or electrical activity. Do not glue, tape or press the part back into place. Isolate the case from vibration, photograph the change and contact a conservator for stabilization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Abnormal heat, smell, noise or electrical instability during a test

Disconnect power using the approved procedure, keep the area clear and preserve the setup for inspection. Do not restart the test or replace a part casually. Record the duration, symptoms, equipment and readings while they are still known.

A transport seal or case arrives damaged

Photograph the exterior, seals and labels before opening. Notify the carrier and insurer, record the custody gap and have a conservator inspect the packed artifact. Do not discard damaged packing material until the claim and condition review are complete.

The preservation decision in one sentence

Keep the original Apple-1 stable, documented, dark enough, dry enough and securely supported; let a conservator decide whether any cleaning, treatment or power-on is justified, and use a replica or emulator whenever visitors need interaction.
