Download and freeze the entire decompilation project before it disappears, preserve the original game data in a separate, documented collection, and capture the exact compiler, SDK, emulator, operating system, and dependency versions needed to build it. Keep at least two verified archival copies, then test a clean rebuild—or preserve the last working executable and an emulator image if rebuilding is no longer possible.
A decompilation repository is only one layer of a playable game. Source code, ROMs or disk images, textures, audio, fonts, tools, licenses, and online services can have different owners and failure points. Treat each layer as a separate preservation job.
Identify what kind of project you are preserving
“Decompilation” is used for several technically different projects. The preservation plan depends on which one you have, because the code, original data, and execution environment are not interchangeable.

Record the project’s own description of its method before choosing instructions. A repository that calls itself a “decomp” may actually be a static recompilation or a replacement engine, and each has different rights and dependencies.

Freeze the repository before it vanishes
Make the first copy read-only and preserve the final state exactly. Do not rely on a website remaining online or on a single default branch being complete.
- Create a complete mirror. Clone every branch and tag, retain the repository’s object database, and include release archives. A Git mirror can be created with
git clone --mirror <repository>; keep the resulting bare repository unchanged. If the host supports large-file storage, fetch and export those objects as well. - Capture an immutable reference. Record the commit ID used for the last known-good build, the date you downloaded it, all release and pre-release tags, and the state of submodules. Export submodule repositories or bundles rather than assuming their URLs will continue to work.
- Save build material. Keep makefiles, project files, CI workflows, patches, scripts, configuration templates, generated-code instructions, and dependency lock files. Generated files can be necessary when the original generator is unavailable.
- Export project history where allowed. Preserve the README, license notices, changelog, issue tracker, pull requests, discussions, and build notes. Respect the host’s terms and contributors’ privacy; public issue history is useful evidence of known failures and design decisions, but it is not automatically redistributable in every jurisdiction.
- Inventory every artifact. Create a plain-text manifest listing file name, size, date, source location, and cryptographic hash. Hash the repository archive, each release artifact, and every external dependency archive.
- Write down the last-known-good state. Note the exact command used, expected output, target hardware, emulator settings, known broken features, and whether the project required a legally owned copy of the game.
Keep the original repository URL in your private custody records even if it is no longer active. The URL is provenance, not a guarantee that the service will remain available.
Preserve game data separately from source code
Decompilation projects commonly omit copyrighted game data. A source tree can therefore be complete as code while still being unable to produce a playable build. Treat the following as separate inventories:
- ROM chips, cartridge dumps, optical-disc images, floppy images, and patches;
- textures, models, animation, maps, fonts, dialogue, music, sound effects, and video;
- third-party libraries, middleware, codecs, and platform redistributables;
- save files, configuration files, controller mappings, and memory-card images;
- server data, protocol notes, account requirements, and any legally obtained offline replacement service.
For each item, record where it came from, who supplied it, the acquisition date, the physical or digital medium, dump or extraction method, and a checksum. Keep an untouched “master” copy and do all conversion or patching on a working copy. If a project’s instructions say that users must provide their own legally owned and self-dumped copy, follow that requirement; do not merge the game’s copyrighted assets into a public source archive.
The Library of Congress identifies uncompiled source code and a gold-master build as preferred preservation content. Preserve both when you lawfully possess them, but do not assume that a gold-master executable grants permission to redistribute the source, assets, or trademarks. Code rights and content rights may belong to different parties.

Recreate the historical toolchain
Modern compilers often reject old code, produce different binaries, or silently change timing. Capture the complete environment instead of saving only a compiler name.
Record compiler and SDK details
Write down compiler family and version, assembler and linker versions, SDK release, libraries, header packages, build-system version, language mode, optimization flags, target architecture, and environment variables. Archive installers or offline packages when redistribution is permitted, and record their checksums. If a license prevents redistribution, preserve the exact product name, version, purchase or download source, and installation procedure so a rights holder can supply it later.

Save a virtual-machine disk or documented system image for the operating system on which the project last built. Include locale, time zone, file-system case sensitivity, path conventions, shell, and required device drivers. A container is useful for reproducible user-space tools, but it may not replace a virtual machine when the build depends on an old kernel, console SDK, proprietary driver, or hardware device.
Pin dependencies and submodules
Record exact revisions rather than floating branches. Cache source and binary dependencies that may disappear, but keep their licenses and notices beside them. If a dependency is fetched by a script, preserve the script’s URL, expected checksum, and a local fallback archive. Document whether network access is required during the build; an offline build is easier to repeat decades later.
Capture emulator and console requirements
For console targets, identify the required development kit, firmware, BIOS, controller mapping, video mode, timing options, and memory configuration. If the original hardware is unavailable, archive a known-good emulator version and its configuration file. Keep firmware or BIOS files only when you have the legal right to retain them, and document where an authorized user must obtain them.

Build or run the preserved project
Work from a clean copy, never from the only archival master. The following procedure produces an auditable result.

Check every archive against its recorded hash. Confirm that submodules, large files, original game data, and required firmware are present before compiling.
- Recreate the environment. Start the archived virtual machine, container, or target console setup. Apply the documented SDK, compiler, environment variables, and emulator configuration.
- Run the project’s documented command. Use the exact build script or command recorded with the preserved commit. Do not “fix” source files in place; make a separate working branch and record every change.
- Save outputs and logs. Keep the executable, generated files, linker map, compiler output, and build log. Hash the final executable and package it with the commit ID and toolchain manifest.
- Launch on the intended target. Test on the original platform when available, then on the documented emulator or port. Note differences rather than silently adjusting settings.
When a project cannot compile, the best preservation result may be the last working executable together with the emulator or operating-system image that runs it. A failed modern rebuild does not erase the value of a reproducible historical runtime.
Validate more than “it starts”
A title screen proves very little. Use a written test checklist and record the result, date, environment, and tester.
- Boot from a clean install and confirm that all required files are found.
- Create, save, reload, and delete a game save; verify that saves survive a restart.
- Exercise keyboard, controller, touchscreen, or other documented input paths.
- Check rendering modes, resolution changes, frame timing, audio channels, subtitles, and language settings.
- Play through representative levels or scenes, including transitions, loading screens, and pause behavior.
- Test failure and recovery paths such as a missing save, invalid configuration, or interrupted load.
- For network-dependent features, record the server address, authentication requirement, protocol assumptions, and the exact point at which the test stops if the service is unavailable.
Build the same commit twice from a clean environment when possible. If hashes differ, identify timestamps, embedded paths, random seeds, generated asset ordering, or compiler nondeterminism. Store both hashes and explain the difference; never label a build reproducible merely because it launches.
Package an archive that another person can restore
Use a durable package such as BagIt, TAR, ZIP, or AXF. The format matters less than complete manifests and restoration instructions.

Suggested archive layout
repository/— mirror, bundles, tags, submodules, and large-file objects;build/— scripts, patches, toolchain manifest, dependency archives, and logs;game-data/— separately controlled ROMs, disk images, assets, and provenance records;runtime/— emulator configuration, virtual-machine image, firmware notes, and controller mappings;documentation/— README, licenses, changelog, issue export, test checklist, and restoration guide;checksums/— hashes for every file and a hash of the complete package.
Put a copy of the checksum manifest outside the primary archive so corruption of the archive cannot erase the only verification record. Keep at least two verified copies in separate locations or storage systems. Periodically read both copies, recalculate hashes, and migrate them before a medium becomes unreliable.
The restoration README should explain rights and restrictions, required original media, exact build commands, dependency sources, emulator settings, expected output, known failures, and how to verify success. Write for a technically competent stranger who has never seen the original project.

If an online service is unavailable
Separate offline gameplay from service-dependent features. Preserve protocol documentation, configuration files, server addresses, authentication assumptions, and any lawful offline mode. Do not claim that a server can be recreated when you have no server code, data, or permission to operate it. Record the last date and environment in which the feature worked.
If original assets are missing
Keep the source tree, asset references, placeholder files, extraction tools, and documentation showing what is absent. A build that compiles with placeholders is not equivalent to the original game. Identify each missing asset by path and function so a rights holder or lawful owner can restore it later.
If the compiler or SDK cannot be obtained
Preserve the last executable, linker outputs, generated source, build logs, and a virtual-machine image if one exists. Screenshots and video of the software in use provide evidence of behavior that cannot be reconstructed from source alone. The Library of Congress specifically recognizes video of software in use as a substitute when an online dependency cannot be recreated.

If the repository has already disappeared
Gather lawful mirrors, release archives, local clones, patches, issue exports, forum discussions, manuals, screenshots, and recorded play sessions. Verify that each copy is authentic by comparing commit IDs, tags, timestamps, and hashes. Avoid presenting an incomplete mirror as the authoritative project; mark missing history and unknown provenance clearly.
Handle copyright and other rights conservatively
Abandonment is not a legal license. A game can be commercially unavailable while its source, art, music, characters, trademarks, and online protocols remain protected. Review code, assets, branding, music, fonts, dialogue, maps, and server interactions separately.
In the United States, 37 C.F.R. §201.40 addresses a narrow preservation exception for eligible institutions. The regulation describes “Video games in the form of computer programs embodied in physical or downloaded formats that have been lawfully acquired as complete games, that do not require access to an external computer server for gameplay, and that are no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace, solely for the purpose of preservation of the game in a playable form by an eligible library, archives, or museum…”

This rule is limited to qualifying libraries, archives, and museums, with conditions on lawful acquisition, commercial availability, purpose, and access. It does not create a general abandonware distribution license for individuals, nor does it authorize uploading copyrighted game data or bypassing every access control. Institutions should consult their counsel and document eligibility before copying or providing access.
When possible, seek permission from the rights holder for preservation, source access, asset use, and operation of replacement services. Keep permission letters with the archive and record any geographic, audience, or noncommercial limits.
Plan for succession and future maintainers
A preservation package should survive the project’s original team. Name a custodian, a backup custodian, and a process for accepting updated archives without overwriting historical versions. Keep a changelog for every migration, rebuild, or rights decision.
Tim Schafer, project lead on the original Grim Fandango and its remaster, summarized the practical risk: “It’s frustrating that if we had just saved the right files, it’d be so much easier.” The lesson is operational: preserve the unglamorous files—scripts, SDK notes, asset manifests, issue discussions, and configuration—while they are still available.

Use a versioned archive rather than silently replacing files. A new emulator, corrected checksum, or newly granted permission belongs in a new package with a relationship to the earlier package. That preserves both the original evidence and the improved way to run it.
