Keep a newly recovered saltwater artifact wet, cool, dark, labeled, and supported; preserve its exact context; and contact a qualified nautical conservator and the responsible heritage authority before cleaning, selling, exporting, or publishing its location. Casual drying, scrubbing, polishing, or household chemicals can cause irreversible salt crystallization, shrinkage, cracking, warping, and corrosion. Identification should proceed from archaeological context and non-destructive examination to material analysis and historical comparison, not from appearance alone.

What to do immediately after recovery

The first decisions determine whether the object remains scientifically useful. An artifact is not just an isolated thing: its position, orientation, depth, sediment, neighboring finds, and relationship to a wreck can establish date, function, cargo, construction sequence, and even which components originally belonged together.

1. Record the context before moving anything

Before lifting, photograph the object in place from several angles. Include a scale, north arrow or other orientation reference, and a visible site identifier. Record the date, coordinates or site reference, depth, visibility, sediment, orientation, nearby objects, visible marks, and any apparent association with hull structure or cargo. Measure the object where feasible and note whether it is partly buried, concreted to another item, or under tension.

Maintain an object-to-context link: assign a unique field number and use it in every photograph, sketch, bag, container, and note. A master site map and an artifact-position map are more valuable than a memory of where something was found. If the site can be documented without recovery, non-destructive survey and preservation in place are normally preferred.

2. Lift only with a plan

Do not pry an object from a concretion, pull on a projecting part, or separate items because they appear loose. A composite object may include iron, wood, leather, textile, glass, and non-ferrous metal, each with different weaknesses. If recovery is authorized and necessary, use the least force that will release the object while keeping support under fragile areas. Photograph the object again as soon as it is lifted, including any sediment or concretion that remains attached.

3. Package it wet and separately

Place the object in a clean, inert, leak-resistant container with enough site water to keep all surfaces submerged. Use a chemically stable container and a label that will remain readable when wet; put a duplicate label inside and outside the container. Separate objects by material type and keep items that may be chemically reactive or physically entangled apart. Do not mix an iron concretion with a delicate organic fragment merely to save space.

Keep containers chilled, shaded, and out of direct light during transport. Avoid agitation, impact, and long periods in a hot vehicle. Record the water source, container, label, date, and any change in condition. This is temporary first-aid storage, not a treatment.

Why a freshly recovered object must not dry casually

Seawater leaves soluble salts inside pores, corrosion layers, wood cells, ceramics, and sediment. As water evaporates, salts can crystallize and exert pressure. Waterlogged wood can shrink, warp, split, or collapse; leather, textile, and paper can stiffen and tear; porous ceramics can crack; and active corrosion can accelerate on iron and other metals. A surface that looks dry and stable may conceal a wet, salt-loaded core.

Drying can also destroy information. Flaking corrosion, impressions in sediment, coatings, paint, tool marks, and organic residues may detach or become unreadable. Do not leave the object on a bench while deciding what it is, and do not alternate between wet and dry storage. If a container leaks, place it inside a second inert container and restore full wet support rather than topping up with an unrecorded chemical solution.

Keep the object wet, cool, dark, and labeled until a conservator establishes a controlled treatment and storage plan. “Wet” does not mean repeatedly rinsing it at home: uncontrolled water changes can move salts or loosen fragile layers.

A defensible identification workflow

Identification is iterative. Start with observations that do not alter the object, then select tests that answer a specific question. Update the record whenever encrustation is removed or a hidden surface becomes visible.

Context and morphology

Describe dimensions, weight only if weighing is safe, cross-section, joins, fasteners, seams, tool marks, decoration, maker marks, inscriptions, wear, and any surviving coating. Compare construction and decoration with the wreck’s documented history, cargo records, shipbuilding tradition, and associated finds. Exact distribution on the seabed may distinguish a ship fitting from cargo, a personal object from a tool, or an original component from material introduced later.

Non-destructive imaging

X-radiography can show the outline and internal structure of metal or composite objects before cleaning. It can reveal concealed components inside a concretion, identify voids and cracks, and indicate whether an apparently solid mass contains several objects. Image the concretion before mechanical cleaning; breaking it open first may destroy evidence or damage a trapped object.

Material analysis

Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) can help identify material makeup, corrosion products, surface details, and coatings. X-ray energy spectrometry, commonly called EDX, can refine the composition of metals and help distinguish alloys or corrosion products. Sampling should be minimal, justified by a research question, and performed by trained staff because a sample can remove the only surviving surface evidence.

Comparative and scientific studies

Depending on the question, specialists may use artifact typology and distribution, radiometric dating, dendrochronology, wood identification, and soil or sediment studies. Pollen, seeds, bone, shell, and other organic remains can clarify cargo, environment, diet, or construction. These methods complement, rather than replace, site documentation and visual examination.

Keep a changing condition record

Photograph before treatment, during each major treatment stage, and after treatment. Record condition, dimensions, materials, visible deposits, analytical methods, results, chemicals, equipment, duration, operator, and any unexpected reaction. If a new surface changes the identification, preserve the earlier interpretation in the record rather than overwriting it.

Material-specific preservation and treatment

No single rinse, corrosion remover, or drying method is safe for every wreck artifact. Treatment must be selected after considering material, porosity, salt and corrosion load, structural integrity, information at risk, reversibility, intervention risk, available equipment, time, cost, and long-term storage conditions.

Iron and steel

Saltwater accelerates corrosion, and iron objects often develop rock-like concretions made of corrosion products, sediment, and marine material. A concretion can trap nearby objects and preserve their outline, so X-radiography should precede mechanical cleaning.

Professional desalination commonly uses alkaline solutions. Electrolytic reduction may be appropriate for iron with a solid metal core, but it requires conservator supervision, controlled equipment, and a documented endpoint. It is not a household battery experiment. After treatment and adequate drying, a stable metal surface may receive a reversible protective wax or consolidant selected for the object and its future storage environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copper alloys, brass, bronze, lead, and tin

Identify the alloy and corrosion products before choosing a treatment. EDX or related X-ray energy spectrometry can refine composition. Alkaline desalination and corrosion-control choices must be matched to the specific alloy and condition; an iron procedure cannot be generalized to copper, brass, bronze, lead, or tin. Aggressive polishing can erase inscriptions, manufacturing marks, and chemically significant corrosion layers.

Waterlogged wood

Waterlogged wood may look sound because water is temporarily supporting degraded cell walls. Once exposed to air, it can shrink, warp, crack, or collapse. Keep it fully supported and wet, with no uncontrolled drying.

One established approach uses polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a bulking agent, followed by freeze-drying. The selected PEG process, concentration, penetration time, and drying cycle depend on species, dimensions, degradation, and available conservation equipment. Do not substitute household oils, varnish, or heat.

Leather, textiles, and paper

These materials are often among the most compromised underwater. Handle them as if they may tear under their own weight. Keep them supported, wet, dark, and chilled, and do not scrub, unfold, brush, or separate layers before a conservator assesses them. Even a seemingly clean textile can carry soluble salts, fragile dyes, or impressions that disappear during rinsing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Glass

Glass can survive better than many organics, but seawater can leach components and leave deposits or salts in cracks. Keep fragments supported and wet until a conservator determines whether desalination is needed. Controlled drying is essential; rapid evaporation can produce cracking, flaking, or further surface loss.

Ceramics

High-fired ceramics are often robust, while porous ceramics can retain substantial salt. Desalination and controlled drying reduce the risk of salt crystallization and cracking. Do not assume that a hard-looking sherd is safe to dry, and do not scrape deposits that may preserve use-wear, pigment, or joining evidence.

Composite objects

A sword, tool, weapon, or fitting may combine iron, wood, leather, textile, glass, and non-ferrous metal. Components may require separate baths, supports, or drying methods. Disassembly should occur only when a conservator determines that it is necessary and documents the original relationship, fasteners, orientation, and any material removed.

Choosing a treatment path

Decision factor Why it matters Questions to document
Material and porosity Controls how water, salts, chemicals, and consolidants move through the object. Is it metal, wood, glass, ceramic, organic, or composite? Which parts are porous?
Salt and corrosion load Determines the urgency and intensity of desalination and corrosion control. Are salts visible or measurable? Is corrosion active? Is a concretion trapping other material?
Structural integrity Sets limits on handling, immersion, imaging, and mechanical cleaning. Can the object support its own weight? Are there cracks, voids, flakes, or detached layers?
Information preserved Surface deposits and associations may be archaeological evidence. Will cleaning erase marks, coatings, residues, or the relationship between components?
Reversibility and risk Some treatments are difficult or impossible to undo. Can the material be removed safely later? What is the consequence of failure?
Facilities and staff Wet storage, chemical handling, ventilation, drainage, climate control, imaging, and freeze-drying require specialist infrastructure. Who will supervise the work, and where will the object remain between stages?
Long-term care A successful treatment can fail if storage or display reintroduces humidity, salts, light, or mechanical stress. What repository, mount, monitoring, and display limits are available?

A conservator should explain the chosen option, alternatives rejected, expected information loss, safety controls, and criteria for stopping. The cheapest or fastest intervention is not automatically the safest: time and cost depend on material, size, degradation, analytical needs, and the facility.

Legal and ethical responsibilities

Whether you may recover, keep, transfer, export, publish, or sell a wreck artifact depends on location, flag state, ownership of submerged land, protected-site status, and national or treaty law. There is no responsible universal answer without those facts. Identify the responsible state or federal heritage authority before moving an object, and obtain any required authorization.

UNESCO’s Annex to the 2001 Convention sets out 36 rules addressing project design, qualifications, documentation, conservation, and site management for underwater cultural heritage. The National Park Service recommends systematic survey, non-destructive ground-truthing, limited recovery, professional nautical conservation, and a final report covering field methods, laboratory analyses, conservation treatments, findings, and future recommendations.

Do not disclose sensitive coordinates if publication could encourage looting or damage. Ownership questions should be resolved before an object enters a private sale, museum loan, export shipment, or online listing. A professional conservator can advise on condition; only the relevant authority can determine the legal status of recovery and title.

Conservation begins when an artifact or feature is exposed because archaeological information can be lost without immediate, informed care. The record is part of the artifact’s significance, not paperwork added after the scientific work.

Common mistakes and safer alternatives

Mistake What can go wrong Safer response
Leaving the object on a table to dry Salt crystallization, shrinkage, cracking, warping, and active corrosion. Return it to inert wet storage and arrange professional assessment.
Scrubbing or polishing a concretion Loss of trapped objects, marks, coatings, and corrosion evidence. Photograph and X-ray first; let a conservator select mechanical methods.
Using household bleach, vinegar, detergent, oil, or rust remover Uncontrolled chemical reactions, staining, accelerated corrosion, or irreversible residues. Use no unapproved chemical; document the condition and seek specialist advice.
Mixing materials in one container Cross-contamination, abrasion, and incompatible chemical conditions. Use labeled containers and separate objects by material and condition.
Separating a composite object in the field Loss of original relationships and damage to weak components. Support the assembly and let a conservator determine whether disassembly is necessary.
Publishing an exact wreck location immediately Looting, site disturbance, and loss of archaeological context. Consult the responsible heritage authority about sensitive-location information.
Treating appearance as identification Misidentification of alloy, corrosion product, or composite material. Combine context, morphology, imaging, material analysis, and historical comparison.

A practical hand-off checklist

  1. Assign a field number and preserve photographs, coordinates or site reference, depth, orientation, sediment, and associations.
  2. Keep the object submerged in an inert, labeled container; keep it cool, dark, supported, and separate from incompatible material.
  3. Do not scrub, polish, apply household chemicals, unfold, disassemble, or allow uncontrolled drying.
  4. Contact the responsible heritage authority about authorization, custody, reporting, export, and location sensitivity.
  5. Contact a qualified nautical conservator or a laboratory with ventilation, drainage, climate control, deionized-water capability, chemical storage, imaging access, and trained personnel.
  6. Agree on an identification and treatment plan, including documentation, analytical questions, stopping criteria, storage, and future display.

The safest sequence is therefore context first, wet stabilization second, identification third, and treatment only under a documented professional plan. Site evidence, imaging, material science, and historical comparison usually provide a more reliable identification than visual appearance alone.
