The safest long-term plan is to display a faithful reproduction and keep the original protected from light. If the original must be on the wall, use conservation-quality, acid-free or pH-neutral materials; keep glazing off the paper with a window mat or spacers; choose glass or acrylic for the drawing medium; and control light, heat, humidity, and handling. UV-filtering glazing reduces one part of the risk but cannot make continuous display harmless.

Choose between displaying the original and displaying a reproduction

Paper and drawing media accumulate light damage. Fading, yellowing, discoloration, embrittlement, and other changes are permanent, and visible light can contribute even when ultraviolet (UV) levels are reduced. The Library of Congress therefore says that long-term or permanent display of paper-based materials is not recommended and identifies a well-made reproduction as the best alternative for valuable originals. The National Archives likewise recommends displaying copies when possible.

A reproduction lets you enjoy the image while the artifact stays in dark, stable storage. It does not provide direct access to the original object, but it greatly reduces the original’s light exposure and handling. Framing the original provides direct viewing, yet no glazing or frame can stop cumulative light damage; they can only reduce some risks.

Approach Access to the artifact Preservation risk Best use
Display a reproduction; store the original You view a copy, not the historic sheet Lowest display-related risk because the original remains protected from light Extended or permanent display, especially for valuable or fragile work
Frame and display the original occasionally Direct viewing of the original Lowered by good framing and short, controlled exposure, but never eliminated Limited exhibitions or special occasions
Frame and leave the original on the wall continuously Direct viewing at all times Highest cumulative light exposure, even with UV-filtering glazing Generally inappropriate for a valuable paper sketch

If the sketch has sentimental or historical value, make the reproduction your everyday display. Reserve the original for occasional viewing in controlled conditions.

Assess the sketch before you frame, clean, or move it

The correct housing depends on the sheet’s paper, media, condition, dimensions, and history. A dry-looking drawing is not automatically stable. Video game concept sketches may combine graphite, ink, marker, colored pencil, pastel, charcoal, paint, or several media, and each can react differently to pressure, static, moisture, and adhesives.

Identify the media and its condition

  • Friable or powdery surfaces: Pastel, charcoal, loose graphite, and flaking paint can shed when touched or vibrated. Static from some acrylic glazing can attract particles or disturb the surface.
  • Uncertain materials: Do not assume that an unknown marker, wash, adhesive, or mixed technique is stable. Media identification affects the glazing and mounting decision.
  • Physical damage: Tears, cockling, creases, lifting layers, stains, mold, detached fragments, or brittle paper require more than routine framing.

Do not clean, flatten, repair, tape, or press a fragile, flaking, valuable, or media-uncertain sheet yourself. A qualified paper conservator should examine it first. Conservation staff at the Library of Congress identify media and adapt the housing; for friable media they have used translucent paper rather than polyester to reduce static charge. That is an object-specific conservation choice, not a universal do-it-yourself recipe.

Record the object before handling it

Before moving the sketch, photograph its front and back in its current state and note visible tears, loose particles, inscriptions, stains, and existing attachments. Record the sheet’s dimensions and any known provenance separately from the artwork. These records help a conservator or conservation framer understand what changed if a problem appears later.

Use a conservation-quality frame that keeps the glazing away from the paper

Select stable mat and backing materials

Use cotton-rag or chemically purified-pulp mat board that is buffered or otherwise pH-neutral and acid-free. Ordinary cardboard, acidic paperboard, and unknown recycled materials can release compounds that accelerate discoloration and embrittlement. The backing should be chemically stable and sized to support the sheet without forcing it flat.

Create an air gap

The sketch must not touch the glazing. A window mat places the sheet behind a cut-out opening; frame spacers create a separation when a different presentation is required. This gap prevents condensation or abrasion at the surface and leaves room for minor movement of paper as conditions change.

Choose a reversible attachment method

Never put ordinary pressure-sensitive tape, self-adhesive corners, or liquid glue directly on the original. Conservation mounting may use Japanese-paper hinges with wheat-starch paste or methyl cellulose, or paper or inert-plastic corners that hold the sheet without adhesive contact. These are professional procedures: an owner should not hinge or repair a valuable or fragile work without advice from a paper conservator.

Tell the framer exactly what is known about the media. A mount that is acceptable for a firmly bound graphite drawing may be unsafe for a powdery pastel or a sheet with lifting paint.

Choose glazing according to the drawing medium

Both glass and acrylic can be suitable when installed with correct spacing and UV protection. The choice is not simply a matter of impact resistance or weight; static charge, surface fragility, and cleaning risks matter.

Glazing choice Advantages Important risks or limits When to obtain expert selection
UV-filtering glass Can reduce UV exposure and does not normally create the same static concern as acrylic Breakable and heavy; it does not block all visible-light damage When the sheet is fragile, large, or has loose media
UV-filtering acrylic Lighter and less likely to shatter; available in conservation glazing systems Can generate static electricity, which is a concern for pastel, charcoal, loose graphite, and flaking media; scratches easily Whenever the surface is powdery, friable, flaking, or not fully identified
Anti-static acrylic Addresses the static concern identified for powdery media Still does not make light exposure safe or remove the need for spacing and stable mounting Have a conservator or experienced conservation framer confirm compatibility

The Library of Congress identifies anti-static acrylic as an option for powdery media such as pastels, charcoal, and graphite pencil. If particles are already loose, ask a conservator to select the glazing rather than substituting ordinary acrylic.

Control light: UV filtering is risk reduction, not immunity

Keep the original away from direct sun and intense artificial light. Fluorescent lighting can also contribute to damage. The National Archives recommends UV-filtering glass or acrylic, reducing both the intensity and duration of exposure, and switching lights off when they are not needed. UV filtering should therefore be combined with short display periods and low ambient light.

  • Place the frame on an interior wall where sunlight cannot strike it directly.
  • Do not position it opposite a bright window if reflected daylight still reaches the sheet.
  • Use the lowest practical illumination for viewing rather than leaving display lights on continuously.
  • Turn display lights off when the room is empty.
  • Rotate in a reproduction for everyday viewing and return the original to storage after a limited showing.

No universal number of display days or light-exposure hours applies to every sketch. Paper type, pigments, media, existing fading, and the intensity and spectrum of the light all change the risk. Treat every additional hour as cumulative exposure rather than relying on a claim that UV-filtering glazing makes permanent display harmless.

Choose a stable location and environment

Paper absorbs moisture. High relative humidity can make it swell, wavy, or wrinkled, increase chemical degradation, and raise the risk of mold. Rapid changes can be as damaging as a consistently unsuitable condition. Archival framing and enclosures can buffer brief fluctuations, but they cannot correct a poor room.

  • Keep the frame away from radiators, heaters, fireplaces, supply vents, and air-conditioning outlets.
  • Avoid exterior walls or locations that receive direct sun and heat for part of the day.
  • Do not use attics or basements for display or storage; they commonly experience larger temperature and humidity swings.
  • Keep the work away from plumbing, condensation, kitchens, bathrooms, and other leak or splash hazards.
  • Do not place the frame where doors, furniture, or people can strike it.

There is no single relative-humidity target established for every privately held sketch. Aim for a stable, moderate indoor environment and avoid abrupt swings rather than treating one number as a mandatory guarantee. If the room regularly feels damp, has condensation, or has seasonal extremes, consult a conservator before displaying the original.

Handle the sheet as little as possible

The Canadian Conservation Institute’s basic-care guidance summarizes the safest rule: “The best handling method is to handle paper as little as possible.” Every lift can add fingerprints, abrasion, a crease, or a displaced particle.

  1. Clear a large, clean, dry work surface before opening the enclosure.
  2. Wash and dry your hands; remove jewelry, watches, and anything that can catch an edge. Use gloves only when a conservator or institutional procedure requires them, since gloves can reduce tactile control.
  3. Support the entire sheet with a rigid, clean board or a second archival sheet. Never lift it by one corner or by an attached tab.
  4. Keep the sheet horizontal while moving it. Do not bend, roll, fan, or shake it to remove dust.
  5. Keep food, drinks, sprays, pens, and cleaning products away from the work area.
  6. If particles or fragments move, stop. Do not brush, vacuum, press, or reattach them; put the sheet back in a protective enclosure and seek conservation advice.

Store the original when it is not being viewed

Store the sketch protected from light and physical contact in an appropriately sized archival folder or enclosure. Support it flat where practical so the paper does not sag or acquire a bend. The folder should be large enough that the sheet slides in without scraping an edge, but not so large that it can shift freely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use stable archival paper or another enclosure selected for the media and condition.
  • Keep the artwork from touching pressure-sensitive tape, adhesive corners, or untested plastic.
  • Do not stack heavy objects on the folder or allow loose sheets to rub against one another.
  • Store the enclosure in a clean interior cupboard or cabinet away from sunlight, vents, plumbing, attics, and basements.
  • Check periodically for condensation, mold odor, new cockling, flaking, or insect activity without repeatedly handling the drawing.

For friable or uncertain media, ask a conservator to specify the interleaving and enclosure. A material that is inert for one technique can create static or abrasion problems for another.

Follow this workflow if the original must be displayed

  1. Decide on a limited showing. Prefer a reproduction for continuous display. Define when the original will be viewed and where it will return afterward.
  2. Obtain an assessment when needed. For a valuable, fragile, flaking, torn, stained, or media-uncertain sheet, contact a qualified paper conservator before cleaning, flattening, mounting, or framing.
  3. Specify conservation materials. Request acid-free or pH-neutral, chemically stable mat and backing materials, a window mat or spacers, and a mount that does not put ordinary adhesive on the original.
  4. Match the glazing to the media. Request UV-filtering glazing, and ask about anti-static acrylic if the drawing contains pastel, charcoal, loose graphite, or other powdery material. Have an expert decide when the surface is friable.
  5. Inspect the assembled package. Confirm that the glazing does not touch the artwork, the sheet is fully supported, no tape contacts it, and the frame closes without pressure on the paper.
  6. Install it in a low-risk location. Avoid sun, intense or fluorescent light, heat sources, vents, damp areas, and rooms with major temperature or humidity fluctuations.
  7. Control the viewing period. Keep lights off when unnecessary, reduce intensity, and replace the original with the reproduction when the planned showing ends.
  8. Return it to storage carefully. Move the entire framed package with two hands, then place the original in its archival enclosure and record any change in condition.

Recognize common unsafe approaches and their fixes

Problem Why it is risky Safer response
The original is taped directly to a backing Adhesive can stain, embrittle, tear, or make later removal destructive Stop adding tape; ask a conservator or conservation framer about reversible hinges or non-adhesive corners
The paper is pressed against the glass Contact can cause abrasion, sticking, or damage from condensation Reframe with a window mat or spacers that create a clear gap
Ordinary acrylic is used on pastel or charcoal Static can attract or disturb powdery particles Pause and obtain advice on anti-static acrylic or another suitable glazing system
A UV-filtering frame is left in full sun Visible light and heat still add cumulative damage Move the frame, lower exposure, switch lights off, or display a reproduction
The sheet is cleaned with a household brush or cloth Loose media can be erased or dragged; pressure can create abrasion Do not clean it yourself if the surface is friable or uncertain; seek assessment
The work is stored in an attic or basement Large temperature and humidity swings increase distortion, degradation, and mold risk Move the enclosure to a stable interior storage area
A frame is hung near a radiator, vent, or fireplace Heat and moving air create local environmental stress and fluctuations Choose a stable wall away from heat and air outlets

What to ask a framer or conservator

When requesting help, provide clear photographs and describe every medium you recognize, including marker, pastel, charcoal, graphite, colored pencil, ink, or paint. Ask:

  • Which materials are acid-free, pH-neutral, buffered, and chemically stable?
  • How will the glazing be kept off the sheet?
  • What attachment method avoids ordinary adhesive contact?
  • Is static a concern for this surface, and is anti-static acrylic appropriate?
  • How will loose, flaking, or detached material be protected during installation?
  • How can the frame be opened later without damaging the original?

Material categories worth comparing include acid-free mat board, UV-filtering glazing, frame spacers, and archival folders for works on paper. Treat these as specifications, not guarantees: a product described as “archival” still needs to be compatible with the particular media and condition.

Bottom line for an original game sketch

Make a faithful reproduction the piece you display every day, and keep the original flat, protected from light, and in a stable environment. If direct display is essential, use a qualified conservator or conservation framer for fragile or uncertain work; use acid-free or pH-neutral materials, a window mat or spacers, suitable UV-filtering and possibly anti-static glazing, low and brief light exposure, and careful two-handed handling. Those measures reduce risk, but they do not reverse or eliminate the permanent damage caused by cumulative light.
