The safest way to preserve an old video game is to identify its exact platform and carrier first, inspect its condition, and choose a compatible capture method before inserting or cleaning it. Cartridges, floppy disks, and optical discs need different handling and equipment. Keep the physical original safe, capture its data only when the media and playback hardware are suitable, and store a separate, documented backup.

How do I preserve old video games without damaging them?

Preservation has three related but distinct parts: caring for the physical item, capturing its software data, and recording gameplay. A camera or capture card that records a console’s video output does not make a copy of a cartridge, floppy disk, or game disc. Likewise, a device that reads one kind of media is not a universal reader for vintage games.

Start by writing down the exact game, platform, carrier, condition, and your goal. Decide whether you need to protect the original, preserve its data, make a convenient copy for access, record a playthrough, or do more than one of these. The Library of Congress describes game releases as potentially including cartridges and disc- or disk-based media, as well as documentation and related materials. Some games also depend on a proprietary console or handheld, so a data file by itself may not preserve all the context needed to understand or run the game.

  • Work cleanly: Wash and dry your hands, use a clean work surface, and keep food and drink away. Handle an item by its edges or casing rather than touching its data surface or electrical contacts.
  • Do not force it: Don’t flex a disc, pry open a floppy shell, or force a brittle case or cartridge into a device.
  • Stop if the item looks suspect: Visible dirt, cracks, warping, mold, shedding or other deterioration are reasons to pause before playback or cleaning. Seek advice from someone experienced with that specific format.
  • Limit unnecessary playback: Each attempt uses the original and the playback device. Don’t repeatedly retry questionable media in unverified or poorly maintained equipment.

There is no established failure-rate statistic for privately owned game media in the sources cited here, so no percentage can reliably predict whether a particular copy will still read. The Library of Congress reported that its National Audio-Visual Conservation Center held more than 5,000 videogames in 2020, acquired through copyright deposit and private donation. That collection included formats ranging from 5.25-inch floppy disks to modern console cartridges, plus packaging, documentation, and related magazines; it is a dated institutional collection figure, not a census of surviving games.

Identify the carrier before choosing a capture device

Check the game’s case, label, platform markings, and physical form. Record the title and edition or revision markings, publisher, language, date if known, and the condition of the media and packaging. Note any manual, inserts, or other associated materials. Photographing the object and its packaging is a useful recordkeeping step, though the Library of Congress’s game-submission guidance does not require a particular photography protocol.

What you have What to verify before capture What the available guidance establishes
Cartridge Exact console or handheld family, cartridge condition, and whether the capture device is documented for that system. Choose a compatible device or specialist service for the exact platform. The Library of Congress provides broader game-preservation guidance, but does not endorse a universal cartridge reader or specify a cartridge cleaning chemical.
Floppy disk Disk size and format, condition, and whether the imaging hardware and software support that disk. The Game Preservation Society describes forensic preservation approaches; KryoFlux describes USB hardware for low-level floppy reads. These are specialist, format-dependent options, not a guarantee of compatibility.
Optical disc Disc format, platform, condition, and compatibility with the drive and capture workflow. Optical workflows require a compatible drive, and some platforms have specific exceptions. The Library of Congress and National Archives and Records Administration provide broader handling or preservation guidance, not a promise that every disc can be copied by a generic drive.

Use the table as a starting point, not as a compatibility list. The required drive, reader, software, and method depend on the particular format and platform. The cited sources do not establish comparative prices or current availability for capture equipment.

How do I digitize old game cartridges?

First identify the exact console or handheld and inspect the cartridge without opening it. Hold it by the casing; keep fingers and debris away from its contacts and openings. Do not put an unknown, corroded, cracked, or modified cartridge into valuable hardware. If it looks damaged or contaminated, stop and consult a specialist rather than testing it through repeated insertions.

  • Help secure your important files with password protection and hardware encryption

There is no evidenced universal cartridge dumper. The institutional guidance reviewed does not specify a cartridge-specific reader or safe cleaning chemical. Match any capture device to the exact platform and check its documentation before use. If you cannot establish that the method is compatible, or the cartridge is fragile or valuable, ask a preservation professional to assess it.

When a suitable workflow is established, keep the first data capture unmodified where the tools permit. Record the device and software used, the date, settings, and any read errors. Preserve the game’s platform information and accompanying materials alongside the data: manuals, packaging, and inserts can explain how the release was intended to work. Whether making, retaining, or using a particular copy is lawful depends on jurisdiction, rights, license terms, and circumstances; these preservation guidelines do not decide that question.

What device do I need to dump an old floppy game?

You need hardware and software suited to the particular floppy format, not simply any USB floppy drive. Specialist low-level imaging hardware exists: KryoFlux describes a USB controller for floppy reads, while the Game Preservation Society describes forensic preservation approaches. Those examples do not establish support for every disk size, encoding, or game. Confirm compatibility with the specific disk and preservation workflow before connecting it.

Handle the disk by its edges and keep it in its shell; do not open the shell. If the disk is dirty, warped, moldy, shedding, or otherwise suspect, do not insert it for a test read. A conventional file copy and a preservation capture are not necessarily equivalent: the latter may be intended to retain more information about the original disk. Choose a format-appropriate preservation method and retain notes about the equipment, software, settings, and errors so that the result can be assessed later.

Magnetic floppy disks should not be confused with magnetic audio or video tape. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) guidance about repeated playback and specialist cleaning is specifically relevant to fragile magnetic tape; it is not a floppy-disk cleaning procedure. For any visibly deteriorated magnetic medium, pause and seek advice from a professional familiar with its format.

Can I copy a game disc without scratching it?

Disc handling can reduce avoidable scratches, but it cannot guarantee a successful copy or repair existing damage. Hold an optical disc by its outside edge and center hole, avoid touching the data surface, and do not flex it. Dust, fingerprints, and scratches can interfere with reading. Use a drive and copying workflow compatible with the disc and platform; the fact that a disc fits a drive does not prove that the drive can capture that game’s format.

The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.

If the disc has a crack, serious scratch, delamination-like damage, or another concerning defect, don’t polish it or keep retrying it on the assumption that more attempts will recover the data. NARA says its holdings maintenance procedures cannot correct scratches deep enough to affect readability. For valuable or damaged discs, stop and consult a specialist before further handling.

Should I clean an old game disc before backing it up?

Not automatically. If a disc is visibly dirty but otherwise stable, NARA advises wiping fingerprints with a soft, lint-free cloth in straight strokes from the center toward the edge. If needed, distilled or deionized water can be used; let the disc dry completely before storage or playback. Avoid circular wiping, which can create scratch directions that are more damaging to readability. Don’t apply or reposition adhesive labels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the disc is cracked, warped, badly scratched, contaminated, or deteriorating, don’t treat cleaning as a safe first step. Pause and ask a specialist familiar with optical media. Do not transfer cleaning directions for magnetic tape to discs, cartridges, or floppy disks: tape cleaning is delicate specialist work and is a different procedure.

Make a preservation copy, an access copy, and a record

A preservation copy and an access copy serve different purposes. NARA defines the goal of a preservation copy for video records as “a high quality duplicate of the original record.” It also distinguishes that kind of copy from a more convenient playback copy, which may be smaller or more compressed. That distinction is useful for game preservation as a workflow principle, but NARA’s video guidance does not specify game image formats or guarantee that a particular game capture retains all relevant information.

  1. Document the original: Record the title, platform, edition or revision markings, publisher, language, date if known, condition, packaging, manuals, and inserts. Keep the notes with the capture.
  2. Assess the risk: If the carrier or playback hardware is questionable, stop before capture. A trained professional may be appropriate when condition is poor, the technical requirements are unclear, or the original is valuable.
  3. Use a compatible workflow: Select the drive, reader, and software for the exact carrier and platform. Do not assume a generic USB device can read every format.
  4. Protect the first capture: Keep an unmodified preservation image or file set where the workflow allows. Record the capture date, device, software, settings, and errors.
  5. Make a separate access copy if useful: Keep any version optimized for convenient play or review distinct from the preservation capture. Do not overwrite the first capture while making the access version.
  6. Verify and back up: Record checksums when the workflow supports them, and maintain a second backup copy. NARA recommends checksums and a second backup in its video-digitization guidance; the Library of Congress also calls for descriptive and production metadata in its game-preservation context.
  7. Keep platform context: Record what hardware or virtual platform the game needs. In its submission context, the Library of Congress recommends an emulated platform when available, or hardware with controllers and a power supply when a virtual platform is unavailable. Keep manuals and associated materials with the record.

An external USB hard drive can serve as one storage location for software or game materials, as the Library of Congress lists external USB drives among possible submission media. It is storage, not capture hardware, and a single drive is not a substitute for a second backup or for the original physical game.

How should I store old video game discs and cartridges?

Storage advice varies by carrier, but stable conditions and protection from avoidable environmental hazards help. The Library of Congress describes cool, relatively dry, stable home storage for audiovisual materials and recommends storing audiovisual media upright. Treat that as general guidance, not a universal household temperature or humidity specification: the cited material does not establish a single setting for every game carrier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Optical discs: Store individual discs upright in their cases; polypropylene cases are preferable where available. Keep the disc from shifting or rubbing against other objects, and avoid adhesive labels.
  • Floppy disks: Store upright in protective enclosures. Keep them away from strong magnetic fields, dust, direct sunlight, and extreme temperature or humidity.
  • Cartridges: Keep them in their casing and protect openings and contacts from dust and handling. The sources cited here do not prescribe a cartridge-specific storage container or environmental range.
  • All formats: Avoid unstable conditions and unnecessary handling. Keep the original and its documentation together where practical, while storing digital backups separately from the physical item.

NARA notes that legacy magnetic media have varied life expectancies and that access to suitable playback equipment can itself become a constraint. It recommends copying legacy magnetic media into current storage as soon as possible. That is a reason to plan for preservation while compatible equipment is available, not a claim that every floppy disk has the same lifespan or that it should be played repeatedly.

When to stop and get specialist help

Pause rather than experiment when media is visibly deteriorated, contaminated, cracked, warped, or mechanically fragile; when a cartridge is corroded or modified; when a floppy’s condition is uncertain; or when the drive or console is not known to be suitable. NARA cautions against using questionable equipment on fragile video records and points to trained professionals when condition or technical requirements warrant it. Similar caution is sensible for other fragile legacy game media, but tape-specific cleaning instructions should not be applied to them.

Ask a prospective service provider what carrier and platform they support, how they handle fragile originals, what capture they will return, whether they preserve an unmodified first capture, and what metadata or verification information they provide. These questions help distinguish a preservation-oriented service from a simple gameplay recording or file transfer.
