To preserve an AI-cited source, save more than an image. Record the final URL, UTC time, page state and browser details; capture the relevant page as a full-page screenshot; export a readable PDF; retain HTML or MHTML when replay matters; then create a manifest, hash the files and protect an untouched master. A screenshot or PDF shows what was displayed at one moment, but it does not prove that the page was truthful or that the publisher was authentic.
What a defensible AI-source package contains
An AI answer can cite a page that changes, redirects, disappears, requires a login or renders different content for different visitors. A fact-checker needs enough context to reconstruct what you saw, not merely a cropped picture.

The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) describes trustworthy records in terms of reliability, authenticity, integrity and usability. Those properties come from the whole package and its controls, not from a screenshot alone.
Step 1: Record the page before you capture it
Resolve the URL
Paste the AI’s citation into a browser and wait for redirects to finish. Copy both the URL supplied by the AI and the final address in the address bar. A shortened link, tracking redirect or regional route can lead to a different document later.

Write down the viewing conditions
- Use UTC for the access time, including seconds when possible.
- Record the page title exactly as displayed.
- Note browser name and version, operating system, viewport dimensions and device-pixel ratio if known.
- State whether you were signed in, which account or subscription tier was active, and whether the page could be personalized.
- List language, region, search filters, date filters, sorting and any expanded accordions or “show more” controls.
- Record whether consent was accepted, refused or left untouched. Consent choices can alter scripts and content.
Copy the relevant passage into your notes only as a locator. Do not replace the page capture with a quotation; the surrounding headings, corrections, advertisements and footnotes may matter.
Step 2: Capture the complete visual state
Prefer a full-page image when layout matters
A full-page screenshot keeps the relationship between headings, tables, captions, disclaimers and images. It is useful when you must show exactly what a human visitor could see. Scroll through the page first so lazy-loaded images and expandable sections you intend to cite have loaded.
Microsoft Edge provides full-page and selected-area capture on supported configurations, but availability varies by device, market and browser version. Use the browser’s Screenshot tool, choose the full-page option when offered, and verify the resulting image from top to bottom. If your browser does not provide a full-page mode, capture consecutive, overlapping sections and record that limitation instead of presenting them as one continuous image.
Preserve the original bytes
Do not resize, annotate or recompress the evidence master. If you need arrows, highlights or redactions, duplicate the file into a working folder and mark that derivative as an annotation. Keep the original file name, format and creation metadata in the manifest.
Capture only the relevant state, not a misleading crop
A selected-area image can be appropriate for a single chart, but include its heading, units, date range, source note and URL context. A crop that removes a correction, “sponsored” label or login warning is not a faithful record of the claim’s context.
Step 3: Export a readable PDF
Use the browser’s print or export-to-PDF command after the page is in the state you recorded. Check the print preview for clipped columns, missing backgrounds, blank pages and content that appears only after scrolling. Preserve the default URL and title headers if they help identify the page; if you disable them, put the URL and capture time in your manifest.
PDF is a document format, not an image format. It may retain selectable text and links, but it can also omit scripts, interactive controls, hover text and late-loading resources. Treat it as a sharing copy, not a substitute for the screenshot and source files. If you need links or page structure to work during replay, save HTML or MHTML and an archival snapshot as well.

Step 4: Save HTML, MHTML and an archival snapshot when replay matters
HTML or MHTML
Save the page source in the browser’s available web-page format. MHTML can bundle resources into one file; a plain HTML save may create a companion resource directory. Keep both the document and its resource directory together, and note which images, fonts, scripts or stylesheets failed to save.
Stand-alone snapshot and site map
For a source likely to be challenged, preserve a stand-alone snapshot and a simple site map of the cited page, linked evidence pages, downloadable files and redirects. The Library of Congress recommends stable URIs, redirect documentation, accessibility and preservation of component files because replay depends on more than the top-level HTML.
Dynamic and restricted content
Client-rendered feeds, videos, charts, login-gated text and content loaded after capture may not survive a save. Record the symptom precisely: for example, “chart canvas visible in browser but absent from PDF” or “article body required an authenticated session.” Never imply that an empty saved file proves the content was absent online.
Step 5: Build a manifest and verify integrity
Put a plain-text or JSON manifest beside the evidence files. One record per file makes the package auditable and lets another person identify exactly what was delivered.

}After the files stop changing, compute SHA-256 hashes. On Linux use sha256sum page-full.png page-print.pdf page.mhtml; on macOS use shasum -a 256 ...; on Windows use certutil -hashfile page-full.png SHA256. Add each digest to the manifest. A hash detects later changes to your copy; it does not prove that the webpage’s claims were true.
For higher-risk work, timestamp the completed manifest through an independent, trusted process and retain the receipt with the package. The timestamp supports when the package existed; it does not establish when the publisher wrote the page.

Step 6: Separate the evidence master from your working copy
Store the untouched screenshot, PDF, HTML/MHTML, archive files, manifest and timestamp receipt in controlled, access-limited storage. Make a second copy for highlighting, OCR, redaction and commentary. NARA guidance stresses protection against unauthorized alteration: a reviewer should be able to compare every annotation with the original bytes.
- Use read-only or write-once storage for the master when your environment supports it.
- Restrict deletion and replacement permissions.
- Keep at least one backup in a separate failure domain.
- Log who opened, copied or annotated the package.
- Encrypt material containing personal data, private messages or account information.

Choose the smallest package that meets the risk. A low-stakes claim may need a screenshot, URL, UTC time and PDF. A consequential claim should receive the full package, hashes, protected master and a recapture schedule.

Recapture according to risk and change
Do not choose a universal interval. Profile the source’s risk and volatility: a frequently edited policy, breaking-news page or personalized dashboard deserves more frequent checks than a stable reference page. Track visible changes between snapshots and keep each capture’s manifest; never overwrite the prior evidence.

Options relevant to evidence capture
- Full-page capture can load lazy images; you can also capture one element by CSS selector.
- Set a device preset or any viewport, use retina scale, dark mode or a transparent background when those states are material to the claim.
- Wait for a selector, a delay or network idle before capture.
- Use custom headers, cookies, a user agent or Authorization for permitted authenticated material, and record that state in your manifest.
- Set timezone and geolocation when the site’s output depends on them.
- Hide selectors, block ads or trackers, block requests or resource types, and run custom JavaScript or CSS when you need a controlled view.
- Use a cache with a TTL you choose, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and the OpenAPI specification.

These controls improve repeatability but do not make personalized or restricted content public. Obtain permission before sending private pages or credentials to any service, and document every non-default option.

The final URL differs from the citation
Cause: redirect, region routing, URL shortener or canonical link. Fix: preserve both addresses, record the redirect chain if visible, and cite the resolved page in the manifest.

The screenshot is only the viewport
Cause: the browser’s selected-area mode was used or full-page capture is unavailable. Fix: use full-page capture, or make overlapping section captures and label the limitation. Do not stitch images without retaining the originals.
The PDF has blank pages or missing images
Cause: print CSS, lazy loading, blocked resources or a canvas-based chart. Fix: scroll to load content, wait for network idle or a specific selector, retry the export, and retain the screenshot and HTML/MHTML when the PDF remains incomplete.
The saved HTML will not replay
Cause: authentication, scripts that require a live server, missing component files or anti-bot controls. Fix: record the access requirement, preserve the visual and PDF captures, save available component files and create an archive snapshot where permitted.

A later reviewer cannot tell what changed
Cause: files were overwritten or annotations were mixed with originals. Fix: use a new case or version identifier for every recapture, hash each completed set, and keep an untouched master separate from working copies.

No. A hash proves that your stored file matches the hashed bytes. It does not authenticate the publisher, establish the page’s factual accuracy or prove that your capture included every state.
