Present an urban design proposal as a visual story: explain the brief, locate the site, show how its context shaped the design, and use clear drawings to make the proposal’s scale and relationships understandable. Then state what feedback or decision you need. The exact documents, drawing scales, file formats, deadlines, and presentation time depend on the receiving authority and the project, so check its current guidance before preparing a submission.
Start with the brief and the decision you need
Open with a short project summary: what is proposed, what the project is trying to achieve, and what questions reviewers should address. A design review presentation should make the purpose of the discussion clear, not simply walk through a collection of drawings. Oxford City Council recommends covering the brief, aims, and objectives; the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames suggests a concise project summary.
Identify whether the presentation is for design feedback, a planning application, or another review. That purpose affects which drawings and supporting evidence matter. End by stating the feedback or decision sought and identifying any open design issues.
Locate the site and establish its wider context
Use a site map to orient the audience and make the project’s geographic scope clear. An aerial image and photographs of existing conditions can help reviewers understand the proposal’s relationship to adjoining properties, streets, and the wider area. Do not treat the application boundary as the whole story: Oxford and Kingston guidance both call for context beyond it.
#1 Best Overall
- 12" triangular architect scale designed to facilitate the drafting and measuring of architectural drawings, such as floor plans, blue Prints, and orthographic projections
- Triangular ruler features 3 sides with 6 different scales, and made from high Impact aluminum, build to last
- Laser etched scales never fading. Architect ruler with enduring laser cut imperial prints for accuracy. They will not wipe or scratch off ever
- Professional grade for accuracy color coded triangular scale for easy and quick selection of the desired scale
- Standard imperial measurements: 1-1/2, 1, 3/4, 3/8, 3/16, 3/32, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 3, 16
Choose contextual analysis that explains the design rather than crowding slides with unrelated facts. Depending on the site, useful topics may include:
- Access, movement routes, nearby destinations, and connections to surrounding streets.
- Street and block pattern, topography, and important views.
- Heritage designations and historic development, where relevant.
- Landscape, ecology, and neighboring projects that are current or planned.
Hamilton’s guidance includes many of these topics as contextual-analysis considerations. Belfast’s guidance says contextual information should be appropriate to the proposal’s nature, location, scale, and potential impacts. These are selection principles, not a universal checklist.

- [PREMIUM QUALITY] This architect scale ruler for blueprints is made of anodized aluminum alloy, very solid and sturdy. Designed for maximum durability, this 3 sided metal architect ruler is perfect for lasting use
- [PRECISE IMPERIAL SCALE] The aluminum triangle ruler is professional grade with supreme accuracy. With reliable construction and accurate performance, the black construction ruler is ideal for architects, engineers, draftsmen and students
- [TRIPLE SIDED DESIGN] The classic architect's triple-sided scale included: 1-1/2", 1, 3/4", 3/8", 3/16", 3/32", 1/2", 1/4", 1/8", 3, 16, very convenient and useful for professional use
- [LASER ETCHED TECHNOLOGY] All numbers and measurement markings on drafting scale rulers are laser etched for maximum clarity and readability. Laser etched technology effectively prevents scale numbers and markings from wearing off or fading away
- [GREAT GIFT FOR ENGINEERS] The architectural scale ruler is great as a gift for engineers that will help them a lot in their work
Explain how the design developed
Show the reasoning that connects the brief and site analysis to the preferred design. Identify important choices and, where alternatives were considered, explain why the selected option works better for the project and its context. Oxford and Kingston both call for the design-development story, including rejected options.

Relevant considerations can include fit with the wider urban pattern, access and movement, scale and massing, heritage and views, public realm and landscape, sustainability, and daylight, sunlight, or wind effects when applicable. - Precision and Accuracy: 12" Triangular Architect's ruler features 3 sides with 6 different scales, You will calculate dimension and perspective for plans and other blueprints without struggling with the guesswork.
- Mterial: Made from high grade anodized aluminum, reliable and skillfully crafted for your most project needs, it’s a workhorse on the drafting table.
- Laser Etched: Architect ruler for laser etched, They will not wipe or scratch off ever.
- Widely Application: Good for technical artist, architect, engineer, plan drawer, hobbyist, modeller, draughtsman, graphic designer, student.
- Portability: Compact and lightweight, ideal for on-the-go use.
Use drawings that make the proposal legible
Choose drawings that answer the questions reviewers need to resolve. A site plan can show layout and relationships; relevant floor plans, sections, and elevations can explain how the scheme works. Include dimensions, land ownership, and what is retained, demolished, or built where those details matter to the review.
Sections are especially useful when they reveal topography, street scale, building height, or the proposal’s relationship to the surrounding area. Seattle’s street-concept template suggests a scale of 1 inch to 20 feet for an existing street section. That is an example from a local template, last updated in 2017, not a general standard; use the scale and drawing requirements specified by the receiving authority.

Show the proposal accurately in its setting
Contextual elevations, photomontages from important viewpoints, axonometric drawings, and 3D models can help explain scale and spatial relationships. Belfast defines contextual design information as visual material that accurately represents the proposal in its immediate and local context. Choose views that help reviewers assess the actual design rather than relying on illustrative images that obscure its surroundings.
Make it clear which visuals are illustrative and which support a measured assessment. When relevant to the project and requested by the authority, include evidence such as daylight or sunlight analysis, wind studies, landscape and ecology information, sustainability targets, or an explanation of how engagement feedback changed the design. These studies are not universally required by the guidance reviewed.

Check local presentation requirements before finalizing
There is no universal presentation duration in the official examples. Oxford City Council says presenters have approximately 40 minutes; Kingston provides 30 minutes, including consultant input. Those are local examples, not a general time allowance. Requirements can also vary with proposal stage, scale, setting, and likely impacts.
Before submission or review, verify the receiving authority’s current guidance and project-specific checklist, including required material, presentation time, drawing scales, file formats, and deadlines. Guidance can change: Victoria’s guidelines page identifies version 2.0 and an update in September 2026.
Capture site images for a presentation
If you need a current web page in a slide deck—for example, a publicly available planning document or a reference image—capture it only when you have permission to use it and when doing so fits the site’s terms. A browser-based workflow gives you control over the page and the capture settings; check the result at presentation size so that labels, boundaries, and relevant details remain readable.
