Prepare the room and console before you launch a long game: give the system unobstructed airflow, remove dust safely, charge a spare controller, and select a power mode that matches your need for downloads or instant readiness. For a PS5, Sony specifies at least 10 cm (4 in) of free space from a wall and around each side. Xbox has different menus and Microsoft material does not establish an equivalent clearance measurement, so do not transfer the PS5 figure to an Xbox Series X|S.
The steps below cover setup, cleaning, power settings, controller preparation, and what to do if heat or fan noise becomes abnormal.
Start with a safe, cool setup
A long session creates hours of continuous heat, so placement matters before the game starts. Put the console on a hard, stable surface with its vents exposed. Do not place it inside a cramped cabinet, press it against a wall, cover it with fabric, or set a PS5 on a long-fibre carpet. Keep cables from being pinched and leave enough room to reach the power plug if you need to disconnect the system.

PS5 clearance Sony actually specifies
Sony’s PS5 setup guidance calls for at least 10 cm (4 in) between the console and a wall. Sony’s support guidance also says to maintain at least 10 cm of free space around each side. Treat that as a minimum, not as a target for packing the console tightly into furniture. The vents must remain clear on the particular orientation you are using.

Do not stack a router, external drive, soundbar, or another heat-producing device directly against the PS5. If the shelf above the console is low enough to trap warm air, move the console or use a more open shelf. The goal is a steady path for cool room air to enter and warm air to leave, not merely a gap at the front.
What is established for Xbox
The Microsoft material available for Xbox power management does not establish a model-specific ventilation distance or a cleaning procedure for Xbox Series X|S. Keep the vents unobstructed and use a hard, open surface as sensible practice, but do not describe Sony’s 10 cm measurement as an Xbox requirement. Check the safety information for your exact Xbox model if you need a placement or service specification.
Clean dust without damaging the console
Dust buildup can restrict airflow and make a fan work harder. Cleaning is preventive maintenance, not a cure for every temperature problem. Turn the console off completely, disconnect the AC cable, and allow it to cool before you work around covers or internal dust channels.
PS5 cleaning procedure
- Finish the session and shut down. Use the console’s power menu rather than pulling the plug while a game is running. Wait until the indicators are off.
- Disconnect power. Unplug the AC cable before cleaning, as Sony’s support guidance instructs.
- Let the chassis cool. The PS5 safety guide says to wait for the console to cool before removing covers.
- Vacuum the external vents gently. Use a low-powered handheld vacuum around the vent openings. Keep the nozzle near the opening without forcing it into the grille or scraping the plastic.
- Remove trapped dust only as the model guide permits. The safety guide describes using a handheld vacuum to remove dust collected underneath the covers. Follow the instructions for your PS5 model and do not pry panels, use metal tools, or disassemble the cooling assembly.
- Reconnect after inspection. Make sure the console is dry, the covers are correctly seated, and the vents are still exposed before reconnecting the AC cable.
A low-powered handheld vacuum is optional equipment for this job; it is not a performance upgrade. Do not blow dust deeper into the chassis with compressed air unless the model’s official instructions specifically support that method.

Xbox cleaning caution
Because the Xbox-specific ventilation and cleaning details were not established in the Microsoft material reviewed for this guide, use the model’s current safety documentation for any panel removal or internal cleaning. Keep external openings clear and avoid opening or modifying the console. If an Xbox continues to overheat, seek Microsoft support rather than experimenting with a fan attachment or an undocumented teardown.
Understand normal fan behavior and overheating warning signs
A PS5 fan can temporarily become louder during some games and apps. PlayStation explains that the fan may run faster for a period to cool the system; that change alone does not prove a fault. Keep playing only if the console remains stable and the surrounding airflow is unobstructed.
Normal behavior
- The fan speed rises when a demanding game loads or a graphics-heavy scene runs.
- The fan becomes quieter after the workload or temperature falls.
- The console remains responsive, shows no temperature warning, and does not shut itself down.
Stop and investigate these symptoms
- A temperature warning appears repeatedly.
- The console shuts down, crashes, or loses power during ordinary play.
- Fan noise stays unusually high after the game is closed and the system has had time to cool.
- You smell burning, see visible damage, or hear grinding or rattling rather than normal airflow noise.
First shut the console down, let it cool, and check placement and dust. If the problem persists, contact PlayStation Support for a PS5 or Microsoft support for an Xbox. Do not recommend opening, modifying, or adding unsupported cooling hardware as a substitute for service.
Prepare controllers, cables, and the room
Long sessions often fail because the controller battery runs out, not because the console cannot run the game. Charge the primary controller before you begin and keep a second controller connected or charged if you have one. Test the charging cable at the console’s USB port before settling in; a damaged cable can make a controller appear to charge intermittently.

PS5 controller readiness
PS5 rest mode can supply USB power for controller charging when the relevant option is enabled. If you want a controller to charge while the console rests, enable USB power for the duration your setup needs. A controller can also be charged from a separate compatible power source, allowing the console to remain shut down.
Xbox controller readiness
Use a charged battery pack or a fresh set of batteries appropriate to your controller, and keep a spare set nearby for a long event. If you use a wired connection, route the cable so it cannot snag your hands or pull the console. Xbox power settings determine whether the console remains available for downloads, but they do not replace charging the controller itself.
Room and network checks
- Keep the console away from direct sunlight, heaters, and other sources of radiant heat.
- Leave room around the power brick or cable connection where applicable.
- Pause large downloads or start them before the session so they do not compete with gameplay bandwidth.
- Use a wired network connection if your normal Wi-Fi location is unreliable and the game depends on a stable connection.
- Set the display to the input and resolution you intend to use, then test audio before the session begins.
Configure PS5 rest mode for the next session
PS5 power-saving controls are in Settings > System > Power Saving. The page includes the time until the PS5 enters rest mode and the features available while it is resting. Rest mode is useful when you want the console ready for a later session, but every enabled feature increases rest-mode power use.

Enable only the features you need
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select System, then Power Saving.
- Review Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode and choose a delay that fits your breaks.
- Open Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable USB power if you want to charge a controller while resting.
- Enable staying connected to the internet if you want downloads or automatic updates to continue.
- Leave features disabled when you do not need them to reduce rest-mode consumption.
With internet connectivity enabled, the PS5 can download content and automatically update games and system software while resting, subject to the game, account, network, and system conditions. Do not assume an update has completed without checking the download or notification status before play.

Choosing rest mode versus a full shutdown

Choose Xbox Sleep or Shutdown deliberately
On Xbox consoles, the relevant controls are described under Settings > General > Power options. Microsoft’s April 12, 2023 Xbox Wire announcement distinguishes Shutdown (energy saving) from Sleep. Menu wording or available options can change with system updates, so verify the labels shown on your current console.
Shutdown (energy saving)
Shutdown is intended to conserve power when the console is not being used. It favors lower standby consumption over the fastest possible resume and may not provide every connected or background feature available in Sleep.
Sleep with active hours
If you select Sleep, Xbox lets you configure active hours so the console is ready during the times you normally play and shuts down outside those hours. This is useful when you want quicker availability in the evening but do not need the console maintaining that state overnight.

Microsoft’s 2023 article states that after active hours the console will fully shut down and draw 0.5 watts, compared with 10–15 watts while active. Those are Microsoft’s reported figures for the described settings, not a universal measurement for every Xbox model, software version, accessory, or operating condition.

Set a practical Xbox schedule
- Open Settings.
- Select General, then Power options.
- Choose Sleep if you need quick readiness during a defined part of the day, or choose Shutdown (energy saving) when conserving standby power is more important.
- If Sleep is selected, configure active hours to cover your expected gaming window.
- Outside those hours, allow the console to shut down unless you have a specific reason to keep it ready.
- After saving, return to the power menu and confirm that the selected mode and schedule are still displayed.

A repeatable pre-session checklist
- Inspect placement. Confirm the PS5 has the Sony-specified 10 cm clearance and that either console is on a hard, open surface with no blocked vents.
- Check for dust. If vents are visibly dusty, shut down, unplug, cool the PS5, and use a low-powered handheld vacuum. For Xbox, follow the exact model’s current safety instructions.
- Verify power and cables. Make sure the AC connection is secure, cables are not pinched, and the display and audio cables are seated.
- Charge input devices. Fully charge the main controller and put a spare within reach.
- Finish updates early. On PS5, use rest-mode internet connectivity if needed. On Xbox, select the power mode and active hours that match your schedule.
- Check the room. Move the console away from sunlight and heaters, and make sure warm air is not trapped by furniture.
- Start the game and observe. A temporary increase in PS5 fan speed can be normal; warnings, shutdowns, or persistent abnormal noise are not.
Troubleshoot common long-session problems
The PS5 becomes loud
Pause or exit the demanding game, check the 10 cm clearance and all vent openings, and inspect for dust. Allow the console to cool. If the fan remains abnormally loud or the system shows warnings or shuts down, contact PlayStation Support.
The console shuts down during play
Do not immediately restart it repeatedly. Disconnect power only after the system has stopped, let it cool, and correct any cramped placement or blocked airflow. If shutdowns recur in an open, clean setup, treat the issue as a service problem rather than adding an unverified cooling accessory.
A controller is still empty after resting
For PS5, confirm that USB power is enabled under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, then test another cable or USB port. For Xbox, check the battery pack, batteries, or wired cable independently of the console’s Sleep or Shutdown selection.
A download did not finish overnight
On PS5, verify that rest-mode internet connectivity is enabled and that the console actually entered rest mode. On Xbox, review the selected power mode and active-hours schedule, then check the current system menu because labels and behavior can change with updates. A network outage, storage capacity problem, or paused download can prevent completion even when the power setting is correct.
When to stop using the console
Turn the system off and seek manufacturer support when overheating warnings repeat, the console powers off unexpectedly, liquid or physical damage is present, or a burning smell or grinding fan noise appears. Do not remove internal components or modify the cooling system to keep a failing console running through a long session. Correct placement and careful dust removal are appropriate maintenance; persistent faults need model-specific diagnosis.
