Prepare your PS5 for Grand Theft Auto VI by checking free storage, removing or relocating games you no longer need, installing a compatible M.2 SSD only if necessary, updating the console and your games, and confirming that you can sign in to your PlayStation account and its security method.
Sony’s current US PlayStation Store listing shows a PS5 release date of November 19, 2026 and a seven-day pre-load for the editions displayed there. It does not publish an installation size. Check your own regional listing again before launch rather than planning around an unverified number.
What is confirmed about GTA VI on PS5
Grand Theft Auto VI is listed for PS5 with a November 19, 2026 release date in the current US PlayStation Store listing. The displayed editions include a seven-day pre-load window. Release timing, edition details, pre-load availability and account conditions can differ by region or change before launch, so the store page attached to your account is the final reference.
The same listing does not state a download or install size. No reliable amount of free space can therefore be given yet. Do not treat a social-media estimate as an official requirement. Leave a sensible margin beyond your current installed games so the console can download the game, patches and temporary installation data when the final size is published.

The listing says online features require a PlayStation account and that certain features or services may require an internet connection or registration for a Rockstar Games account, among other conditions. That wording does not establish that every feature needs a separate account, nor does it prove that the single-player game requires a permanent internet connection. Read the regional listing and any in-game notices you receive.
1. Check how much PS5 storage is available
Use the Storage screen
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select Storage.
- Review the free space shown for console storage and any installed M.2 SSD or USB extended storage.
PS5 games and saved data are held on the console’s built-in storage unless you move them to a supported location. The Storage screen lets you identify which games, applications and data are consuming capacity before you delete anything. Record the free-space figure and check it again after every large download or update.
Do not plan around an invented GTA VI size
Because Sony has not published the install size in the cited store information, there is no defensible “you need exactly X GB” answer. The practical approach is to remove enough low-priority content that a substantial new game and its launch update will fit, then recheck the official listing when the size appears. A pre-load may also need working space while files are downloaded and installed, so having only the bare minimum shown by a future listing could still create an avoidable failure.
2. Free space without losing purchases
Delete games you can reinstall
Highlight an unwanted game or application on the home screen, press the Options button, and choose the delete command. Purchased games remain associated with your account; you can download them again from your Game Library. This is usually the fastest way to create room for a launch download.

Separate game installations from saved data when reviewing the Storage categories. If a title contains progress you may want later, verify which saved-data item you are removing before confirming. A game installation can be deleted while its saved data is retained, but the Storage screen should be used to make that distinction rather than assuming every delete action is identical.
Move older games to USB extended storage
A supported USB extended-storage drive can hold PS5 game data that you are not currently playing. This is an archive option, not a way to run PS5 games directly: a PS5 title stored on USB must be copied back to console storage or an installed M.2 SSD before it can be launched.
PS4 games are different. They can be played directly from USB extended storage, making a USB drive more useful if much of your library is PS4 software. When choosing between deleting and moving, consider how often you expect to return to the game and whether copying it back before playing is acceptable.
Choose the least disruptive cleanup order
- Remove games you have finished and can download again.
- Move infrequently played PS5 games to USB if you want to keep their files nearby.
- Keep frequently played games on console storage or compatible M.2 storage.
- Review large media or application items shown in Settings > Storage.
- Recheck free space after the cleanup and again after installing any launch-day patch.
3. Decide whether an M.2 SSD is worthwhile
An internal M.2 SSD is optional. It makes sense if you regularly run out of console space and want PS5 games to remain playable without copying them from USB. Sony says compatible PS5 games can be downloaded to M.2 storage and launched from it.

Compatibility matters more than headline capacity
The cited Sony CFI-71XX safety guide specifies a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD, with capacities from 250 GB to 8 TB, plus physical-size and heat-dissipation clearances. Those values apply to the hardware revision covered by that guide. Check the requirements for your exact PS5 model and the exact drive before purchasing; an M.2 drive that fits a computer is not automatically suitable for a PS5.

Install an M.2 drive carefully
Use the installation instructions for your specific PS5 revision. In general, the console must be fully powered off and unplugged before the expansion-bay cover is removed. The drive is fitted into the M.2 slot with the supplied spacer and retaining screw, and the cover is replaced before the console is started. On first boot, the PS5 prompts you to format the drive; formatting erases its contents.
Do not force the cover, omit the spacer, or operate the console with the expansion bay exposed. If a drive is not detected, power down and check seating, the retaining screw position and the drive’s published compatibility instead of repeatedly formatting it.
When an M.2 purchase is unnecessary
If deleting or archiving a few games gives you comfortable room, expansion adds cost and installation work without solving a current problem. Buy an M.2 SSD for ongoing library capacity or faster access to your own PS5 games, not because an unverified GTA VI size has been circulated.

4. Update the PS5 system software
Check the console version
- Open Settings.
- Go to System.
- Select System Software.
- Open Console Information.
- Confirm that the status says Up to date.
If the console is not current, install the offered update while you have a stable internet connection and enough free space for the update process. Avoid starting a large game download at the same time as a system update if storage is tight; complete the console update first, restart if requested, and then check the free-space figure again.
Check GTA VI and every related application
- Highlight the game or application on the PS5 home screen.
- Press Options.
- Choose Check for Update.
Starting a game or application also checks for its newest available version. For launch preparation, manually checking is useful because it confirms the status before you begin a pre-load or expect to play.
If an update will not install
- Recheck available space in Settings > Storage; an update may require temporary working room in addition to the final file size.
- Confirm that the console is connected to the intended network and that other downloads are not consuming the connection.
- Restart the PS5 and run Check for Update again.
- If the problem affects only one game, delete the incomplete installation only after confirming that its saved data is not selected, then redownload it from your Game Library.
5. Verify your PlayStation account and security method
Find the security controls
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Account.
- Open Security.
Confirm that you know the account sign-in method and can access the selected two-step-verification method. Sony documents two-step verification by SMS or by an authenticator app. If you changed phone numbers, replaced your phone or lost access to the authenticator, fix that before launch rather than waiting for a pre-load prompt.

Protect recovery access
Keep account recovery information in a secure place that you can reach if the console signs you out. Test a normal sign-in while you still have time to resolve a password, phone-number or authenticator problem. Do not share verification codes with anyone claiming to be support, and do not store recovery details in an unprotected public note.

Understand the online-service wording
Online features require a PlayStation account according to the store listing. Some services may also require an internet connection or Rockstar Games account registration. The condition is feature-specific language, not a blanket statement about every mode. Check the edition page for your country and any notice shown during setup to learn which features are available under your account and network conditions.

Seven days is a listing detail, not a universal promise
The current US listing gives the displayed editions a seven-day pre-load period before November 19, 2026. Your region, edition or later store update may show different timing. When the pre-load option appears, start it from the game’s store page or Game Library and watch the download status rather than assuming that a purchase automatically completed every installation step.
A practical launch-week schedule
- One to two weeks before launch: check console storage, remove or move low-priority games, verify your account and two-step verification, and install the latest system software.
- When pre-load opens: confirm the official file size and the remaining free-space requirement shown by your regional store, then begin the download on the storage location you intend to use.
- After the pre-load finishes: run Check for Update on the game, leave room for a possible day-one patch, and avoid deleting the installation while troubleshooting a separate storage item.
- On release day: sign in before starting the game, accept any updated notices, and allow online services to connect if the feature you select requires them.
7. Know what the PS5 version is designed to use
A PlayStation Blog announcement attributes this statement to Mary Yee, Senior Vice President, Marketing, SIE: “Thanks to the close partnership between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5 by taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features to deliver a deeply engaging single-player experience when it launches on November 19.”

9. Final PS5 readiness checklist
- Storage checked at Settings > Storage.
- Enough free space reserved for the officially listed download and possible update, with no estimate substituted for the eventual size.
- Unneeded games deleted or moved; purchases remain available in the Game Library.
- Any M.2 SSD verified against the exact PS5 revision, including PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, capacity and heat-dissipation requirements where applicable.
- USB storage used only with the correct expectation: PS5 games must be copied back to play, while PS4 games can run directly from USB.
- Console status reads Up to date at Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
- GTA VI is checked with Options > Check for Update.
- PlayStation sign-in works and the SMS or authenticator-based two-step-verification method is accessible.
