Make room before the event starts. Open Main Menu → Items, check the total and maximum shown at the top, then use or discard items until you have practical headroom. A full Item Bag prevents new items from PokéStops, Gyms and battle rewards, and Pokémon GO Plus + will not spin a PokéStop while the bag is full.
Do not rely on an old capacity screenshot. The Help Center documents a 350-item default and 50-item increases per upgrade, while the last published maximum located for the game was 8,300 in December 2024. That maximum is historical, not a verified 2026 cap.
What the Item Bag limit actually controls
Your Item Bag is the inventory used for consumable and event items. The game shows your current total and maximum at the top of the Items screen. When the total reaches the limit, incoming item collection stops until you create room.
- PokéStops cannot add items.
- Gyms cannot add items.
- Battle rewards cannot add items.
- Pokémon GO Plus + will not spin a PokéStop while the bag is full.
That behavior makes a full bag particularly costly during an event: you can still play, but the normal item stream and accessory automation are interrupted.

What counts toward the limit
The Help Center’s capacity rule applies to the items shown in your bag. Gifts and Stickers are exceptions: they do not count toward the Item Bag maximum. Do not delete useful items merely because the Gifts or Stickers sections look crowded.
Capacity figures you can and cannot assume

The current maximum as of October 11, 2026 was not established by the official material available for this guide. If the exact cap matters, trust the maximum displayed in your Item Bag or a newer official announcement rather than a community post quoting the December 2024 figure.
Check your inventory before clearing anything
Start with an inspection, not a mass deletion. You need to know both how much room you have and what the event is likely to give you.

- Select Items.
- Read the current total and maximum at the top of the screen.
- Note which categories occupy most of the total and which items you routinely use.
- Write down the amount of free space before making changes, especially if you plan to use an accessory or play for several hours.
Use the remaining space as your operating margin. A bag that is technically one or two items below the limit can fill again immediately; a larger buffer reduces the need to stop and sort during the event.
Check the event announcement first
Event bonuses can change which items deserve priority. Read the current announcement for the exact event, dates, local-time rules, reward types and any temporary items. Do this before deciding what to discard.
Temporary items may have deadlines that are different from the event’s overall end. During Pokémon GO Wild Area: Global 2024, unused GO Safari Balls expired at 6:15 p.m. local time on each event day. That was a rule for that event, not a universal expiration policy. A future event may use a different time, a different item or no expiration at all.

Make room without wasting useful items
The official guidance identifies two immediate ways to free capacity: use items or discard them. Apply those choices in that order when possible.

Before the event, consume items you already intended to use rather than throwing them away. For example, if your normal play session uses healing or catching supplies, use the existing stock during ordinary play and let the resulting space become your event buffer. The goal is not to empty the bag; it is to turn excess stock into room while preserving the supplies your event plan requires.
- Use an item only when doing so matches your normal play or a confirmed event task.
- Do not activate a time-limited effect merely to make the count smaller if you cannot use its duration.
- After using items, return to the top-of-screen total and verify that the space was actually created.
Discard deliberately, not by category alone
If use cannot create enough room, discard the least valuable excess. Review the item’s quantity and your likely event need before confirming. Keep a written or mental threshold for items you depend on; discard only the amount above that threshold.
A conservative process is:
- Sort your attention toward the largest stacks first.
- Mark items that the event announcement explicitly rewards, requires or gives a temporary use.
- Mark items you use in ordinary play and do not want to replace during the event.
- Discard only unmarked excess, in small batches.
- Recheck the total after each batch so you stop as soon as the desired buffer exists.
This approach avoids the common mistake of clearing a whole class of items and discovering later that the event made that class valuable.
Do not spend time clearing Gifts or Stickers
Because Gifts and Stickers do not count toward the Item Bag maximum, removing them does not solve a full-count warning. Focus your cleanup on counted inventory.

Decide whether an Item Bag upgrade is worthwhile
An upgrade changes the limit; using or discarding changes only the current contents. The right choice depends on whether the problem is a one-time surplus or a recurring lack of room.

The Help Center’s wording is specific: purchasing an Item Bag upgrade from the Shop increases inventory capacity by 50. It does not establish a current maximum, a universal price or a particular bundle. Check the Shop on your own account before treating an upgrade as available or affordable.
A simple decision test
- One event, temporary surplus: use or discard carefully, then recheck the count.
- Repeated full-bag interruptions: compare the value of permanent 50-item increments with the one-time cleanup you would otherwise repeat.
- Unclear event rules: delay irreversible discards until you have read the current announcement.
- Price-sensitive decision: inspect the live Shop; no current price should be inferred from an older guide or screenshot.
Prepare Pokémon storage separately
Pokémon storage and the Item Bag are separate inventories. Making room for items does not create room for additional Pokémon, and increasing Pokémon storage does not let you collect more PokéStop items.
The Pokémon GO team announced on December 26, 2024: “The Pokémon storage limit has been increased to 9,300.” That statement is tied to that update. It is not proof that 9,300 remains the current limit in October 2026.

- Open your Pokémon storage before the event.
- Read the current Pokémon total and maximum shown by the game.
- Decide which catches are essential for the event’s goals.
- Transfer only Pokémon you have already reviewed under your own keeping rules.
- Confirm that enough Pokémon storage remains for the planned catching period.
If you cannot establish the current maximum from the game or a current official announcement, do not plan around the historical 9,300 figure. The in-game display is the relevant number for your account.
Build an event-specific priority list
There is no single “correct” bag composition for every event. Build yours from the event’s actual rewards and your own play style.
Identify non-negotiable items
Mark items in three groups:
- Required: items explicitly needed for an event task or mechanic.
- High-use: items you expect to consume steadily during your session.
- Replaceable excess: quantities above the level you can realistically use or replenish.
Required and high-use groups form the protected core of your inventory. Replaceable excess is where cleanup begins. If the announcement names a temporary event item, add its expiration time to the protected list until you know how and when it must be used.

Plan for the whole session, not only the start
Estimate how long you will play, whether you will move between stops and whether your normal routine depends on collecting items continuously. A stationary, short session needs less headroom than a long route that relies on repeated spins. The game does not publish a universal “items per hour” figure in the material available here, so use your own recent play pattern rather than an invented rate.

Pokémon GO Plus + does not expand Item Bag capacity. Pokémon Support’s FAQ states that when the Item Bag is full, the accessory will not spin the Photo Disc at a PokéStop.
If you plan to rely on the accessory for item collection or experience during an event, create room before connecting or starting your route. Treat the accessory as a collection method, not as a workaround for inventory limits.
If the accessory stops collecting
- Open the game and inspect the Item Bag total and maximum.
- If the total is at the limit, use or discard counted items.
- Return to the game’s Item Bag screen and confirm the new total.
- Resume accessory play only after space is visible.
If the bag was not full, the inventory limit is not the explanation for the interruption; check the accessory’s connection and the game’s current support guidance separately.

The day before
- Read the current event announcement and note all item-specific rules.
- Inspect Item Bag and Pokémon storage separately.
- Use ordinary-play items that you already planned to consume.
- Discard only confirmed excess.
- Decide whether a 50-item upgrade is justified by your recurring needs, then verify the live Shop details.
Just before play
- Open Main Menu → Items.
- Confirm the displayed total and maximum.
- Verify that your protected event items are still present.
- Check the current event announcement for local-time deadlines.
- If using Pokémon GO Plus +, make sure the bag is below its limit before relying on PokéStop spinning.
During the event
Check the bag whenever the game warns that collection is unavailable or whenever a temporary item approaches its deadline. Use items that fit the event plan first. If you must discard, remove only the excess identified in your pre-event review, then recheck the count before continuing.

Review temporary items immediately. Use or discard them according to the event’s stated rule, especially if the announcement specifies a same-day expiration. Restore your normal inventory thresholds rather than keeping an event-specific surplus indefinitely.

Troubleshooting common preparation mistakes
“I cleared items, but the bag still says full.”
Return to the Items screen and read the total again. Gifts and Stickers do not count, so removing them cannot lower the counted total. Continue with counted inventory and make sure each use or discard action was confirmed.
“I cannot collect a battle reward.”
Check the Item Bag total before retrying. A limit reached through ordinary play also applies to battle rewards; create room, then claim the reward again if the game allows it.
“An old guide says the cap is 8,300.”
That number comes from the Pokémon GO team’s December 2024 announcement. Use the maximum shown in your current game for present-day planning.
“I bought an upgrade, but my expected number is different.”
Each documented upgrade adds 50 capacity, but your starting capacity, previous upgrades and any current account rules determine the displayed total. Reopen the Item Bag and verify the maximum rather than relying on a calculation from an old screenshot.
“A temporary event item disappeared.”
Read that event’s announcement for its expiration rule. The 6:15 p.m. local-time GO Safari Ball expiration applied to Wild Area: Global 2024; it should not be generalized to another event.
