Before a major Windows upgrade, check whether your PC is eligible, protect the files you cannot afford to lose, and confirm that Windows has enough room to install the update. Then use the upgrade route offered for your device. The steps below focus on moving to Windows 11 or installing a major Windows feature update; the exact storage needed and when an upgrade becomes available vary by PC and installation path.

Start by identifying your Windows version and upgrade target

Preparation depends on whether you are installing a feature update for the Windows version already on your PC or moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11. First identify what is installed so you can check the correct eligibility and update guidance. Knowing the edition and version also helps you describe the PC accurately if an update fails or an administrator needs to troubleshoot it.

Check the installed version

  1. Press Windows + R, type winver, and press Enter. The About Windows window shows the Windows edition and version.
  2. Alternatively, open Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications.
  3. Write down the edition and version, then check for an offer under Settings > Windows Update.

Do not begin by downloading random installation files simply because a new release exists. The applicable route depends on your current version, hardware, and whether Microsoft has validated the upgrade for that particular PC. If Windows Update shows that current-version updates must be installed first, complete those updates and restart before judging whether the Windows 11 offer is missing.

If this is a work- or school-managed PC, follow your IT administrator’s update process. Administrators may control timing, compatibility checks, and installation options; the consumer steps here are not a substitute for that process. A managed computer may also have software or policies that make a personally chosen installation-media upgrade inappropriate.

Check whether the PC can run Windows 11

For an upgrade from Windows 10, eligibility depends on both the PC’s hardware and its current Windows version. Microsoft provides the PC Health Check app to assess compatibility, and Windows Update also checks eligibility. Use one of those checks before spending time clearing storage or preparing installation media. An upgrade may not be offered immediately to every eligible PC: Microsoft says Windows Update indicates when Windows 11 has been tested and validated for that specific device. Current-version updates and a restart may be needed before the offer appears.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimum requirements, as listed on its system requirements page checked October 13, 2026, include:

Requirement Windows 11 minimum
Processor Compatible 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores
Memory 4 GB RAM
Storage device 64 GB or larger
Graphics DirectX 12 or later, with a WDDM 2.0 driver
Display A qualifying display; check Microsoft’s current requirements for the applicable size and resolution criteria

These are minimum device requirements, not a promise that every feature will work on every qualifying PC. Some Windows features need more capable hardware. Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro also require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup. That setup condition is separate from the question of whether the PC has enough free space for the upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 64 GB figure describes the size of the storage device, not the amount of free space that must be available at the moment an update runs. A PC can meet the minimum device specification and still need to remove temporary files before setup can continue. Conversely, clearing several gigabytes cannot make an incompatible processor or other missing hardware requirement eligible.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. A PC running Windows 10 will continue to work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11; only PCs that meet Windows 11 requirements can upgrade. If PC Health Check says the device is not eligible, do not assume that freeing disk space or installing drivers will satisfy a hardware requirement. Check the reason shown by Microsoft and follow the supported path for that device instead.

Back up files and verify that you can get them back

Microsoft recommends backing up files before installing a new Windows version, even though the normal upgrade experience is intended to move files and data. A backup gives you a separate copy to use if something goes wrong or you later need a file that did not end up where you expected. Treat the backup as a preparation step, not as evidence that the upgrade method itself is risk-free.

Backup destination Useful when What to check
Cloud storage You want access across devices and a convenient recovery route. You have a reliable internet connection, sufficient cloud storage, and confirmation that the files you need are actually included.
External hard drive You have a large collection of files, limited internet access, or want a separate physical copy. The drive has enough room for the selected files, connects correctly, and can be opened from the PC.
Network drive You already have a suitable network destination and want to store files away from the PC. The destination is reachable and you can browse the copied files from the computer that will be upgraded.

Choose the destination based on your data size, connectivity, and recovery needs. An external drive is one option, not a requirement; cloud and network storage can also work. If your files occupy more space than your available cloud plan, an external hard drive or network destination may be more practical. If internet access is unreliable, a local copy avoids depending on a connection during preparation.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Do not assume that file syncing protects every folder or preserves installed applications. The preparation guidance here concerns backing up files, not creating a complete system image. A synchronized folder can still be incomplete if a file was never selected for syncing, is still pending upload, or is stored elsewhere on the PC.

Make the backup useful, not just present

  • Identify the folders and files you would need if Windows had to be repaired or reinstalled. Include personal documents and other important files stored outside the usual folders.
  • Wait for copying or uploading to finish. Check that the destination contains the expected files and that representative documents, photos, or other important items open.
  • Make sure you can reach the backup destination independently of the PC’s Windows installation—for example, that you know where the drive is or can sign in to the storage account.
  • Keep the backup unchanged while upgrading. Do not use the only copy of important files as the installation destination.
  • Confirm that the destination has enough capacity for the selection you made. A copy that stopped partway through is not a complete recovery copy.

The point of this check is recoverability. You should know where the files are, how to reach them, and that they open before you commit to an upgrade. Microsoft’s recommendation is to back up files; it does not mean that OneDrive synchronization or another service automatically covers every user file, program, or system setting.

Check available storage instead of relying on one space number

There is no single free-space figure that applies to every Windows feature update. Microsoft says Windows checks available storage before starting an update and prompts you to free space if it is insufficient. The amount needed varies with the update path and the optional features, languages, and updates being installed.

Microsoft’s current feature-update guidance, checked October 13, 2026, gives these examples. They are configurations, not a universal requirement or guarantee for a particular PC:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Update path Optional content Example storage need in Microsoft’s guidance
Optimized for minimal disk space Minimal optional features, languages, and updates 5.5 GB or more
Optimized for minimal disk space Many optional features, languages, and updates 13.75 GB or more
Optimized for reduced offline time Minimal optional features, languages, and updates 20 GB
Optimized for reduced offline time Many optional features, languages, and updates 20 GB or more

That range explains why advice such as “you always need exactly 20 GB” is misleading. An update with minimal optional content can use a different path from one that includes many features, languages, and updates. Windows decides whether the offered update can proceed and tells you when more space is required.

Do not confuse the examples above with the 64 GB minimum storage-device requirement for Windows 11. One is an example of temporary or update-related free-space needs for a feature update; the other is a minimum device specification. Neither number tells you to delete a fixed amount of data from every PC.

See what is using space

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage to review the system drive’s available space and the categories using it.
  2. Inspect categories such as installed apps, temporary files, and system-reserved storage to understand where space is going.
  3. Use Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations to identify temporary files or other items Windows considers removable. Review what will be removed before confirming a cleanup.
  4. Return to Windows Update and follow its storage prompt if one appears. Free enough space for the update path offered to your PC rather than trying to empty the drive indiscriminately.

Storage Settings helps you make a targeted decision. If installed apps consume most of the space, decide whether an application can be removed and whether you have the installer, account access, and activation details to restore it. If temporary files are the main category, Windows’ cleanup tools may identify safer candidates. Avoid deleting files you do not recognize simply to reach a guessed threshold, and do not treat system-reserved storage as ordinary personal data.

After cleanup, check the available space again and let Windows Update perform its own check. The value can change as Windows downloads update files, so a number that looked adequate earlier is not a promise that setup will accept the same path later.

Install current updates and reduce avoidable software conflicts

Before retrying an upgrade that has failed—or when preparing for a planned installation—install important updates for the current version of Windows, including available hardware drivers. Microsoft’s upgrade-error guidance identifies non-Microsoft antivirus software and outdated or nonessential applications as possible sources of upgrade problems.

Installing current drivers is preparation, not a guarantee that every old device or program will work with the new release. If Windows Update reports that a restart is required, restart before checking again for the Windows 11 offer. A pending restart can also leave the PC in an intermediate state while you are trying to diagnose an absent or failed upgrade.

This is troubleshooting guidance, not a requirement to remove every antivirus product before upgrading. If an upgrade error points to a software conflict, consider temporarily removing the suspected nonessential application or non-Microsoft antivirus, then try again. Keep installation media and any required activation details available so you can reinstall the software afterward. Do not remove security software without a plan to maintain appropriate protection.

Do not remove unrelated programs preemptively. The safer sequence is to install current updates, note any error message, and address a named or plausible nonessential conflict when needed. Removing software without preserving its installer or activation information can create a second problem after the Windows upgrade completes.

Choose the installation method with its data consequences in mind

Method How it works Important distinction
Windows Update Checks whether an upgrade is available and offers it through Windows settings. Microsoft says the offer reflects testing and validation for the specific PC. It may appear only after current-version updates and a restart.
Installation media, in-place upgrade Starts Windows setup from within the existing Windows installation. Select the appropriate option to keep files and apps. Read the setup choices before continuing.
Installation media, clean install Boots the PC from the media and installs Windows afresh. This wipes the existing Windows installation and files. It is not the keep-files upgrade route.

For most people, Windows Update is the straightforward route once the upgrade is offered. It is the route Microsoft uses to indicate that the release has been tested and validated for the specific PC. If the offer is not present, that absence alone does not prove incompatibility; complete current-version updates and check eligibility again.

Installation media is an alternative, but “using installation media” does not by itself mean that files will be kept. Starting setup inside Windows for an in-place upgrade differs from booting from the media for a clean install. The latter wipes the existing installation and files, so the backup and retention decision must be made before setup starts.

If you use installation media for an in-place upgrade

  1. Check that the PC meets the requirements for the Windows version you intend to install.
  2. Start the setup process from the existing Windows installation rather than booting the PC from the media.
  3. When setup presents retention choices, select the appropriate option to keep files and apps if that is your goal. Confirm the selected option before proceeding.
  4. Follow the setup prompts. If the option you need is unavailable or the displayed choice is unclear, stop and resolve that before installing.

Read every retention screen. The phrase “in-place upgrade” describes the intended setup path, but the actual selection shown by Windows determines what is retained. If setup does not offer the keep-files-and-apps choice, do not continue on the assumption that it will preserve your environment anyway.

If you intend to perform a clean install

Booting from installation media to perform a fresh installation removes the existing Windows installation and files. Treat it as a wipe, not as a normal upgrade that preserves your existing environment. Confirm your backup is complete and accessible before starting, and verify Windows 11 eligibility first. If your goal is to retain apps and personal files, do not choose the boot-from-media clean-install route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A clean install therefore has a different purpose from troubleshooting a routine feature update. It may be appropriate only when you deliberately want a fresh installation and have planned how to restore the files and software you need. The crucial preparation is recognizing the wipe before you boot from the media, rather than discovering the consequence after setup has begun.

Use this final readiness check

  • You know the installed Windows edition and version, and have checked the right upgrade target.
  • If moving to Windows 11, you have checked eligibility with PC Health Check or Windows Update and understand that the offer may depend on device validation.
  • Your important files are backed up to a destination you can access, and you have checked that the copies open.
  • You have reviewed available system-drive storage and will follow the actual Windows Update prompt rather than relying on a universal free-space number.
  • Important current-version updates and hardware drivers are installed; any suspected software conflict is handled only when relevant.
  • You know whether the chosen setup will keep files and apps or erase the existing installation.
  • If you remove a nonessential application to troubleshoot, you have its installation media and activation details available.
  • If the PC is managed by an employer or school, you have followed the administrator’s process instead of improvising a consumer installation.

Proceed only when the installation method matches what you want to preserve. If Windows Update has not offered Windows 11, confirm current updates and eligibility rather than treating an absent offer as proof that the PC is incompatible. If a setup screen contradicts your intended retention choice, stop and resolve the discrepancy before continuing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I back up my PC before upgrading Windows?

Yes. Microsoft recommends backing up files before installing a new Windows version. Use cloud storage, an external hard drive, or a network drive according to your data size, internet access, and recovery needs, then verify that representative files open from the backup.

How much free space do I need for a Windows 11 or feature update?

There is no single number for every update. Microsoft examples range from 5.5 GB or more to 20 GB or more, depending on the update path and optional features, languages, and updates. Check Settings > System > Storage and follow the Windows Update prompt for your PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the 64 GB Windows 11 requirement the same as 64 GB of free space?

No. The 64 GB figure is the minimum size of the storage device in Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements. It is not a universal amount of free space required for an update.

Will Windows Update delete my files?

The normal upgrade experience is intended to move files and data, but Microsoft still recommends a backup before installing a new Windows version. A clean install started by booting from installation media wipes the existing Windows installation and files.

Why has Windows 11 not appeared in Windows Update?

Microsoft says the offer appears after the upgrade has been tested and validated for the specific PC. Current-version updates and a restart may also be required. Check eligibility with PC Health Check or Windows Update before concluding that the computer is incompatible.

Should I uninstall antivirus software before upgrading?

Not automatically. Microsoft identifies non-Microsoft antivirus and outdated or nonessential applications as possible causes of upgrade problems. Consider removing a suspected conflict when troubleshooting, and keep installation media and activation details for reinstalling it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an external hard drive be my Windows-upgrade backup?

Yes. Microsoft identifies an external drive as an option, especially for large collections of files or limited internet access. Make sure it has enough room, the copy finishes, and you can open the files before starting setup.

What is the difference between an in-place upgrade and a clean install?

An in-place upgrade starts setup from the existing Windows installation and can preserve files and apps when the appropriate retention option is selected. A clean install boots from installation media and wipes the existing Windows installation and files.

What if PC Health Check says my computer is not eligible for Windows 11?

Freeing storage or updating drivers does not replace a missing hardware requirement. Review the reason Microsoft gives, and do not assume that extra disk space will make an incompatible PC eligible.

The Bottom Line

Check eligibility, make and verify a separate file backup, review the system drive’s actual free space, install current updates, and understand the retention choice before setup begins. Windows Update is the normal route when Microsoft has validated the upgrade; booting from installation media for a clean install erases the existing Windows installation and files.
