Prepare a Nothing phone update by backing up important data, connecting to stable Wi‑Fi, charging to at least 50% (or leaving the phone connected to a charger), and starting the update from Settings > System > System updates. Once installation begins, do not press the power button or use the phone until Nothing OS reports that the process is complete.
What you need to do before a Nothing phone update
A normal Nothing OS over-the-air (OTA) update does not require a factory reset, special update software, or a particular storage quota stated by Nothing. The preparation is mainly about protecting your data and giving the download and installation a stable power and network connection.
- Back up important data. Use Google’s backup controls on the phone, and create a fresh manual backup if you do not want to wait for the automatic process.
- Use Wi‑Fi. Nothing’s update instructions tell you to connect the phone to Wi‑Fi before downloading and installing.
- Provide enough power. The battery should be at least 50%, or the phone should remain connected to a charger.
- Start from Settings. The update check is at Settings > System > System updates.
- Leave the phone alone during installation. Do not press the power button or perform other actions until the upgrade finishes.
These instructions apply to routine stable updates. A beta release needs a more cautious decision because Nothing describes its OS 5.0 Open Beta as pre-release software that may affect stability, battery life, and performance.
Back up your Nothing phone first
Nothing says its phones use Google’s default backup process. To start a backup immediately, open Settings > Google > Backup > Back up now. This is the most direct option when an update is available and you want a current backup before proceeding.

How to make a manual backup
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google.
- Choose Backup.
- Tap Back up now.
- Keep the phone connected while the backup runs, then confirm that the backup process has finished before starting the update.
The exact items included in Google’s default backup can vary by device, Android version, app, and service. The official instructions do not promise that every app’s private data or every local file is restored automatically. For information that would be difficult to replace, open the relevant app or service and check its own export, sync, or backup status as well.
How automatic backup works according to Nothing
Nothing describes automatic backup as taking place when the phone is connected to Wi‑Fi, left on standby, and charging for two hours. If you plan to rely on automatic backup instead of tapping Back up now, provide those conditions and allow the full period to pass. A phone that is being actively used may not meet the standby condition.
That two-hour description is a condition for the automatic process, not a requirement that you must wait two hours after a manual backup. If the backup page shows a recent successful backup and you have checked app-specific data, you can continue with the update preparation.

Before updating, identify anything that would cause a problem if it were missing after a software change:
- Photos and videos that are stored only on the phone.
- Contacts that are not synchronized to an account.
- Important messages or call logs.
- Files in local folders or downloads.
- App-specific data that the app does not send to its own cloud service.
- Authenticator, password-manager, or banking-app recovery information, using each provider’s supported transfer or recovery method.
Nothing’s beta guidance specifically calls out photos, contacts, messages, and call logs as important data to back up before installing pre-release software. Those are sensible checks for a stable update too, but a routine OTA should not be treated as if it automatically erases the phone.
Check critical apps separately
Google backup is a useful safety net, not a guarantee for every app. Banking, work, messaging, authenticator, password-manager, and encrypted-storage apps may require an account sync, an export file, a device-transfer code, or recovery codes. Open those apps while the old system still works and confirm that you know how to sign back in. Keep recovery codes somewhere other than the phone being updated.
Set up power and Wi‑Fi
Use a stable Wi‑Fi connection
Connect the phone to a reliable Wi‑Fi network before checking for the update. Nothing’s support guidance presents Wi‑Fi as part of a smooth download and installation, rather than treating mobile data as the preferred connection. If the network is intermittent, postpone the update until you can use a more dependable connection.

A stable connection matters most while the update package is downloading. Avoid starting on a network that requires a browser sign-in, cuts out frequently, or is likely to be turned off while you are away. If you are using public Wi‑Fi, wait until the phone has completed any sign-in and shows a normal internet connection.
Meet the battery requirement
Nothing Support says the phone should have a battery level of at least 50% for a smooth download and installation. If it is below that level, charge it before starting. You can also keep the phone connected to a charger during the process; Nothing does not specify a required wattage or a particular charger model.

Use a charger and cable that are compatible with your phone and in good condition. The important requirement in Nothing’s instructions is sufficient charge or continued connection to power, not a special accessory. A charger is optional support for the update, not a separate product requirement or a reason to buy a particular model.
Place the phone where the charging cable will not be pulled out accidentally. If the battery is already above 50%, plugging in can still reduce interruption risk during a long download or installation.
Choose a suitable time
Although Nothing does not publish a universal installation duration, an update can involve several restarts and periods when the screen is unavailable. Start when you do not need the phone for a call, navigation, two-factor authentication, or other time-sensitive task. Keep access to another phone if the Nothing device is your only way to receive a critical code.
Do not schedule an update immediately before travel, an examination, an important meeting, or an emergency shift. A stable update normally returns the phone to service by itself, but allowing time for the process and a post-update check makes the interruption less stressful.
Check for and install the update
Nothing’s official path for checking an Android or Nothing OS update is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap System updates.
- Let the phone check for an available update.
- Read the update prompt, then choose the on-screen download or installation option.
- Keep the phone on Wi‑Fi and satisfy the power requirement while the download and installation proceed.
Read the version information and any release notes shown by the phone. Make sure the prompt is for the device you are holding and not an unrelated file or third-party installer. A normal OTA update is delivered through the system settings; you do not need special update software or a factory reset.
Update availability depends on the specific Nothing phone, its software channel, region, and the rollout schedule. If the page says that no update is available, Nothing’s guidance means that no new version is currently being offered to that phone at that time; it does not necessarily mean every Nothing model has the same software version.

What to do while installation is running
After the phone begins the upgrade, do not press the power button or perform other actions. Nothing explicitly advises waiting for the update to complete. The display may change, go dark, or restart as part of the process; avoid trying to interrupt it simply because the screen is not interactive.

Keep the phone in a safe place where the cable cannot be pulled out and where it will not be accidentally handled. Do not repeatedly reboot it, open menus, remove the cable unnecessarily, or attempt another update at the same time. Wait for the phone’s own completion message or for Android to return control before using it normally.
Do not judge progress solely by the screen. A dark display or an automatic restart can be normal during an upgrade. The safest action is to leave the phone connected and untouched until the process reports completion. If an error message appears after the phone returns to a usable state, follow that message rather than trying random fixes.

Extra caution for beta software
A beta installation is not the same decision as accepting a routine stable OTA update. Nothing describes Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta as pre-release software and warns that it may contain bugs or affect device stability, battery life, and performance. Those are beta-specific warnings; they should not be presented as a prediction that every stable update will have those effects.
Before joining or installing a beta
- Back up important information before enrolling or installing, with particular attention to photos, contacts, messages, and call logs.
- Confirm that you can tolerate reduced stability, shorter battery life, or performance problems while the pre-release software is installed.
- Do not install a beta on a phone that must be dependable for work, emergency communication, travel, or other critical use unless you have an appropriate fallback.
- Read the beta program’s device and rollback instructions before proceeding. A backup is protection against data loss, not a guarantee that every beta problem can be reversed instantly.
- Keep a second way to communicate available in case a bug affects calls, messages, apps, or battery endurance.
Beta software may also change behavior between builds, so check the specific program page for eligible models and installation or rollback details. Do not assume that a stable-update checklist alone makes a pre-release installation safe.

Storage: do not invent a universal threshold
The official Nothing instructions reviewed here do not state a single minimum amount of free storage that applies to every Nothing phone and every update. Do not delete photos, apps, or other data pre-emptively just to meet an unofficial number.
If the update screen reports that there is not enough space, follow the phone’s specific instructions. The prompt may identify what must be removed or moved. Review large downloads and files only after the phone reports a space problem, and preserve your backup before deleting anything. The space requirement can differ by device, installed software, and the particular update package.
Do not confuse a storage warning with a battery or network warning. Solve the condition the phone actually reports, then return to Settings > System > System updates. If you remove anything, verify that it is backed up and that you can reinstall or restore it later.

After the update completes
Wait until Android returns control before reconnecting to normal use. Then check the basics: make a test call, confirm Wi‑Fi and mobile service, open your most important apps, and verify that photos, contacts, messages, and calendar data are present. These checks do not replace a backup, but they can reveal an account-sync or app-login issue while you still remember what changed.
Some apps may need to finish their own updates or ask you to sign in again. Follow the app’s recovery process if that happens. Do not assume that a missing app item means the system update erased it; it may be stored under a different account or require the app’s own restore step.

The update page says no update is available
Check that you are using Settings > System > System updates and that the phone is connected to Wi‑Fi. If the phone still reports no update, the release may not yet have reached that model, region, or rollout group. Nothing’s support guidance does not promise that all phones receive an update simultaneously, so avoid forcing an installation with an unrelated file or tool.
The battery is below 50%
Charge the phone to at least 50%, or leave it connected to a charger, before beginning the download and installation. Starting with a low battery creates an avoidable interruption risk.

Wait until you can use a stable Wi‑Fi network. If the current network is unreliable, move closer to the access point or use another trusted network. Do not treat a failed or incomplete download as a reason to interrupt an installation that has already started; first allow the phone to return to a normal state, then retry from the update screen.
The update prompt reports insufficient storage
Use the prompt’s device-specific instructions. There is no universal free-storage figure in Nothing’s published guidance for all phones, so a fixed number copied from another model may be wrong. After confirming your backup, remove or move only the files and apps you choose, then check the update again.
You are worried that backup did not include an app
Google’s default backup does not guarantee coverage of every app’s private data. Check the app’s account-sync, export, or backup controls separately, especially for authentication, finance, messaging, and work apps. Keep any recovery codes or transfer files available before updating.
The phone appears unresponsive during installation
Do not press the power button or perform actions while the upgrade is in progress. Nothing’s instruction is to wait for completion. If the phone eventually displays an error or returns to the update screen, read that message and follow its recovery directions rather than repeatedly interrupting the process.

If installation has not started, reconnect to power or Wi‑Fi and use the update screen to resume or retry. If the upgrade itself is already running, do not attempt to correct the situation by pressing buttons or rebooting. Leave the phone alone until it either completes or presents a recovery message.

A practical pre-update sequence
Use this order when you want the shortest safe routine:
- Choose a time when you can leave the phone unused and keep a fallback way to communicate.
- Connect the phone to a trusted Wi‑Fi network.
- Open Settings > Google > Backup and tap Back up now, unless you have deliberately allowed the automatic two-hour standby-and-charge process to complete.
- Check that the battery is at least 50% or connect the phone to a charger.
- Confirm that critical apps, authenticator accounts, recovery codes, photos, contacts, messages, and call logs have their own required backup or sync.
- Open Settings > System > System updates and follow the update prompt.
- Once installation starts, leave the phone untouched until it reports completion.
- After the phone returns control, check the data, connectivity, and apps that matter most to you. If anything is missing, use the relevant account or app’s recovery process rather than assuming the default backup covered it.
For a beta, complete the same sequence but make the additional stability, battery-life, and performance trade-off an explicit part of your decision before installing.
