Prepare an iPhone, iPad, or Mac for a major Apple update by securing a current backup, confirming that the model is supported, freeing enough storage, connecting to reliable power and internet, and choosing the appropriate installation method. On iPhone and iPad, start with Settings > General > Software Update; on a current Mac, use Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is not offered or the wireless process fails, use a trusted computer for iPhone or iPad, or follow the recovery steps below rather than repeatedly retrying the same blocked route.
What to do before any major Apple update
A major operating-system installation changes core software, restarts the device, and can take longer than a routine app update. The safest preparation is a short sequence that removes the most common blockers before you select Install.
- Make a fresh backup. Use iCloud or a computer for iPhone and iPad. For a Mac, use Time Machine or another separate backup destination.
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the exact iPhone, iPad, or Mac model supports the release you intend to install. Do not rely on the update name alone; compatibility lists change with every major release.
- Check free storage. The device needs room to download, prepare, and install the update. A file that is large enough to download may still fail during preparation if working space is insufficient.
- Stabilize power and connectivity. Use Wi-Fi for a wireless iPhone or iPad update, connect the device to power, and avoid starting while another large download is consuming the connection.
- Choose one installation route. Use Software Update first. Keep the trusted-computer method available if the update is not displayed or the wireless process cannot complete.
- Allow uninterrupted installation. Do not force a restart. On a Mac, do not let the computer sleep or close a laptop lid while installation is running.
Menu wording can vary slightly by operating-system release and regional Apple support site. The paths below use the current labels documented by Apple; if a label differs, use the built-in search for “Software Update” or “Storage.”

1. Back up the iPhone first
Apple tells iPhone users to back up before updating. You can back up to iCloud or to a computer. A backup protects device information and settings if the installation is interrupted or you later need to restore the phone.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
| Backup destination | Best when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud | You want an automatic, off-device copy and have sufficient iCloud space. | Confirm the backup completes and that the Apple Account used for iCloud is the one you expect to use for restoration. |
| Computer | You have enough local storage and want a copy that does not depend on the phone’s internal storage. | Use a trusted Mac or Windows computer, keep the connection stable, and verify that the backup finishes before updating. |
Do not treat a backup as a guarantee that every application can restore its data exactly as it appeared. Apple’s guidance is to back up to safeguard information and settings; individual apps can have their own account or cloud-restoration requirements.
2. Confirm the iPhone model is eligible
Check the compatibility list for the specific iOS release. Apple states that unsupported iPhone models cannot install the latest software. If the model is absent from the list, do not plan around that release or attempt unofficial installation methods.
To identify the model, open Settings > General > About and note the model name and model number. Compare that information with Apple’s compatibility listing for the release you are considering. Version numbers and supported-model lists are volatile, so verify them immediately before installation rather than relying on an old article or a remembered cutoff.
3. Check and clear iPhone storage
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Review the storage bar and the largest categories before deleting anything. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance notes that iOS may offer to offload apps that can be downloaded again; offloading removes the app itself while retaining its documents and data.
- Enable Offload Unused Apps if you need space but want to retain app data.
- Remove downloaded videos, podcasts, large message attachments, or duplicate photos that you can restore elsewhere.
- Delete an app manually only after checking whether you need locally stored data or an offline download.
- Leave additional working room beyond the displayed update download; the system must also unpack and prepare the installer.
Storage cleanup is a built-in maintenance step, not a reason to install a third-party “optimizer.” Use the categories and recommendations shown in iPhone Storage so you can see exactly what will be removed.

4. Install wirelessly
- Connect the iPhone to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Connect it to power. Apple’s consumer instructions advise Wi-Fi and power for a wireless update.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- If an update is offered, tap Download and Install.
- Enter the passcode if requested and leave the iPhone connected until the restart and progress screen finish.
Apple’s deployment documentation lists 20% battery as the minimum battery level for a user-initiated iPhone update. That is a technical deployment threshold, not a promise that a nearly empty battery is a good consumer setup. Connecting power avoids a low-battery interruption and follows Apple’s consumer guidance.
How do I prepare my iPad for an iPadOS update?
1. Back up and verify the model
The iPad process mirrors the iPhone process: make an iCloud or computer backup, then compare the exact model with the compatibility list for the intended iPadOS release. Open Settings > General > About to identify the model. An unsupported iPad cannot install that release, even if another newer iPad can.

2. Free enough iPad storage
Open Settings > General > iPad Storage. Apple may suggest offloading apps that can be downloaded again without removing their personal documents and data. You can enable Offload Unused Apps or delete selected apps manually.
- Start with large, replaceable downloads such as films, music stored for offline use, and downloaded reading material.
- Review message attachments and photo or video files before removing them.
- Do not assume that deleting one large item is sufficient; the installer needs space to download, unpack, and prepare.
3. Update over Wi-Fi
- Join Wi-Fi and connect the iPad to power.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap Download and Install when the release appears.
- Provide the passcode if prompted and let the iPad complete its restart.
Apple’s deployment documentation lists 20% battery as the minimum for a user-initiated iPad update. Treat that figure as a technical minimum; power connected throughout the process is the more reliable preparation.
Wireless update or computer update: which iPhone/iPad route should you use?
| Route | Use it when | Requirements and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless Software Update | The update is visible in Settings and the device has stable Wi-Fi, power, and storage. | It is the simplest route and keeps the process on the device. Slow networks, server reachability, or insufficient space can stop the download or preparation. |
| Finder on macOS Catalina or later | The wireless update is unavailable, does not appear, or repeatedly fails. | Use a trusted computer and a suitable cable. Back up first, then use Finder’s device-management update controls. |
| iTunes on macOS Mojave or earlier, or Windows | The computer runs an older Mac release or Windows and the wireless route cannot complete. | Use the current iTunes installation available for that computer, connect the trusted device, and back up before selecting the update command. |
A computer update is an alternative route, not a way to bypass an incompatible model. It also does not remove the need for a backup. If the computer displays a prompt to update or restore, read it carefully and choose the update option unless you intentionally need a restore.

What should I do if my iPhone or iPad won’t update?
Work through the causes in this order. Different symptoms can have different causes, so do not assume every failed update is a storage problem.
The update does not appear
- Check the exact model against the release compatibility list.
- Confirm that the device is connected to the internet and then reopen Settings > General > Software Update.
- If the release is compatible but still unavailable, try the trusted-computer route.
The download is very slow
- Stay on Wi-Fi rather than switching between mobile data and Wi-Fi.
- Pause competing large downloads or streaming on the same connection.
- Keep the device connected to power and retry later if the network is congested.
The device reports insufficient storage
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage.
- Use Offload Unused Apps or remove replaceable downloads and large attachments.
- Restart the update after storage has been reclaimed; the system still needs preparation space.
The update server cannot be reached
Retry on a stable connection rather than repeatedly tapping the same control during an outage or transient server issue. If the server message persists, use Finder or iTunes on a trusted computer after confirming the backup and compatibility checks.
The wireless installation fails repeatedly
Stop repeating the same wireless attempt. Verify backup, model support, free space, Wi-Fi, and power, then switch to the appropriate computer route. Keep the device connected until the computer reports that the process is complete.
Should I back up my Mac before upgrading macOS?
Yes. Apple Support’s “Update macOS on Mac” guidance says: “Before installing new software, it’s a good idea to back up your Mac.” Make the backup before selecting the upgrade, not after the installer has already started.
Use Time Machine with separate storage
Time Machine is built into macOS and can back up files to an external hard drive or SSD. Apple recommends a destination other than the Mac’s internal disk so the backup remains separate if something happens to the Mac or that internal disk.

- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Connect the external storage device.
- Open the Mac’s Time Machine settings and select the connected device as the backup disk.
- Follow the setup prompts carefully. macOS may ask to erase or reformat the disk; confirm that it contains no files you still need before accepting an erase prompt.
- Allow a backup to complete and check that the most recent backup time is current before starting the macOS installation.
An external hard drive or SSD is an optional accessory, not a universal capacity recommendation. Choose storage that can hold the files you need to protect and keep it separate from the Mac when the backup is not running.
Compare Mac backup destinations
| Destination | Advantages | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Time Machine on external storage | Built into macOS, supports recurring backups, and remains separate from the internal disk. | The drive must be connected and configured correctly; an erase prompt can remove existing contents. |
| Another supported separate destination | Can fit an existing backup workflow if it already protects the Mac’s files independently. | Availability, retention, and restore steps depend on that destination’s configuration. |
How to verify Mac compatibility and start the update
Check whether the Mac is eligible
Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update, or search for “Software Update.” Apple says Software Update offers macOS updates and upgrades compatible with the Mac model. If no release is offered, that can mean the Mac does not need an update or is not compatible with that particular release; it is not evidence that the installation is missing a hidden download.
For a major upgrade, confirm the Mac model separately against Apple’s compatibility information for that release. Model eligibility can differ between nearby Mac generations, so do not infer support from the processor name or from another Mac in the same household.
Install from System Settings
- Finish the backup and close work that you do not want to leave unsaved.
- Connect the Mac to power, especially when using a portable Mac.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Select the offered update, upgrade, or restart action.
- Enter the administrator password if macOS requests it.
- Leave the Mac alone while the installer runs.
The Mac can restart more than once and may show a progress bar or a temporarily blank screen. Apple instructs users not to put the Mac to sleep or close a laptop’s lid during installation. Interrupting power or closing the lid can leave the process incomplete.

Mac battery thresholds and power planning
Apple deployment documentation lists a 20% minimum battery level for a user-initiated update on a Mac with Apple silicon and 50% for a user-initiated update on an Intel-based Mac. These are technical minimums in deployment documentation, not a universal consumer recommendation for every installation scenario.

A practical readiness checklist
iPhone and iPad
- Backup completed to iCloud or a computer.
- Exact model checked against the intended iOS or iPadOS release.
- Storage reviewed under Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage.
- Replaceable downloads removed or apps offloaded where necessary.
- Reliable Wi-Fi connected and competing downloads paused.
- Device connected to power.
- Passcode available for the installation prompt.
- Trusted computer route identified in case wireless updating fails.
Mac
- Recent Time Machine or other separate backup verified.
- Mac model checked against the release compatibility information.
- Enough free internal storage available for download and installation.
- Mac connected to power.
- Administrator password available.
- External backup disk left connected only as needed and protected from accidental erasure.
- Laptop lid will remain open and the Mac will not be put to sleep during installation.
What to expect during and after installation
iPhone and iPad may restart and display an Apple logo with a progress indicator. Keep power connected and do not disconnect a computer cable if you are using Finder or iTunes. A Mac may restart several times, show a progress bar, or display a blank screen temporarily. Those behaviors can be part of the normal installation sequence documented by Apple.
After the device reaches the lock screen or desktop, allow background setup to finish before judging performance. Confirm that your important files and settings are present, check that essential apps open, and verify that the backup destination still reports the earlier successful backup. If a specific app asks you to sign in again, use that app’s normal account-recovery process rather than repeating the operating-system installation.
When to postpone an update
Postpone the installation if you cannot complete a backup, do not have enough storage, cannot provide stable power or internet access, or have an urgent presentation, trip, or work deadline that leaves no time for troubleshooting. Postponing is also sensible when the release is not compatible with your model; no preparation step can make unsupported hardware eligible.
When you are ready, use the checklist for the relevant device family, select the supported route, and leave the installation uninterrupted until Apple’s progress screen returns control to you.
