Prepare your iPhone in this order: back up and transfer your data, check for unfinished repairs, unpair an Apple Watch if necessary, sign out of your Apple Account, erase all content and settings, handle the SIM or eSIM and carrier plan separately, then follow the destination’s packing and handoff rules. Do not manually delete photos, contacts, or other iCloud-synced items while signed in; that can delete them from iCloud and your other devices.
The exact final steps depend on whether you are using Apple’s trade-in service or selling privately. Apple’s device-erasure procedure protects your data and removes the account lock, but it does not cancel a cellular plan or determine how a marketplace handles shipping, inspection, payment, or returns.
Choose the handoff route before you start
Your preparation is mostly the same for a trade-in and a private sale, but the destination controls inspection, shipping, payment, and return requirements. Decide which route you are taking before you erase the phone, because the instructions for packaging and included items differ.
| Consideration | Apple trade-in | Private resale |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping process | Apple supplies a trade-in kit with the packing materials it requires. Use the kit intended for your device and keep the courier receipt. | Follow the marketplace, buyer, or carrier’s shipping instructions. Apple’s kit rules do not apply automatically. |
| Accessories | Send only what Apple’s instructions request. Apple says cases, cables, adapters, and other included extras will not be returned. | Include accessories only if your listing or buyer agreement says you will; package them according to the destination’s rules. |
| Condition and repairs | Review Parts and Service History. Apple’s current trade-in guidance requires a repair marked “Finish Repair” to be completed before trade-in. | Disclose repairs and condition accurately. A private-sale platform may apply its own inspection or eligibility rules. |
| Value and responsibility | You receive the destination’s trade-in offer and follow its inspection process. | You set or negotiate the sale and handle listing accuracy, buyer communication, shipping, payment, and any agreed return. |
No current offer amount or reliable claim that one route pays more is established here. Compare the actual offer and the time you are willing to spend after you have completed the same data-protection steps. Convenience is usually the main reason to choose a managed trade-in; a private sale gives you more control over the listing and handoff but leaves you responsible for every step the destination does not perform.

Make a safe pre-erasure checklist
Do these checks while the iPhone still contains your data. Keep the old phone charged and connected to Wi-Fi until transfer and account checks are complete:
- Confirm that a recent backup exists and that the replacement iPhone has received the data you need.
- Open important apps on the replacement phone, including any app that generates verification codes, and confirm that you can sign in.
- Check Parts and Service History for an unfinished repair.
- Unpair an Apple Watch if this iPhone is paired with one.
- Decide whether you are moving, suspending, or canceling cellular service with your carrier.
- Remove or transfer anything that needs separate handling, such as Apple Pay cards, an iMessage registration when moving to a non-Apple phone, or AppleCare.
- Have the destination’s shipping instructions, kit, or buyer agreement available before you erase the device.
Apple’s “Sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone” guide and its June 12, 2026 “What to do before you sell, give away or trade in your iPhone or iPad” guide provide the account, backup, erasure, and handoff sequence. Apple’s U.S. trade-in instructions add the repair, SIM, kit, and receipt details.
1. Back up and transfer your information first
Create a backup you can restore
Make a current iCloud backup or an encrypted computer backup before changing anything on the old phone. Check the backup time and date rather than assuming that a previous backup contains your newest photos, messages, or account changes. A backup is a safety net; it is not the same as confirming that every item has appeared on the replacement device.
Keep the old iPhone available until you have tested the replacement. Some services require the old phone to approve a sign-in or move an authenticator, passkey, banking profile, password manager, or other security credential. Follow each service’s migration instructions while you can still access the old device.
Finish the transfer to the replacement iPhone
Use the transfer method offered during setup of the replacement iPhone, and open important apps, photos, messages, contacts, notes, and authentication tools on the new device. Check that you can sign in to accounts that require a verification code. If you use an authenticator app, banking app, password manager, or passkey, follow that service’s own migration process while the old phone is still available.
Do not treat an empty-looking home screen as proof that transfer failed or succeeded. Check the specific information you cannot easily recreate: recent photos, conversation history, contacts, notes, files, calendar entries, health data, and credentials. If an app stores data in its own account, sign in on the replacement phone and verify the account’s current content before erasing the old one.
Do not “clean up” iCloud by deleting items
While signed in to iCloud, deleting a synced photo, contact, note, or file from the old iPhone can delete it from iCloud and from other connected devices. Apple explicitly warns about this in its pre-sale guidance. Erasing the iPhone through Erase All Content and Settings is different: it removes the local device content without asking you to delete each synchronized item from your account.
That distinction matters if you are trying to make the phone look empty. Do not remove items one by one, sign out in the middle of a deletion process, or use the old phone to “tidy” your iCloud library. Complete the transfer, then use the single full-device erase command.
2. Check Parts and Service History before an Apple trade-in
Open Settings and review Parts and Service History (on supported models this appears under General > About). Look for a component labeled Finish Repair. Apple’s current U.S. trade-in instructions say that an unfinished repair must be completed before the iPhone can be traded in.

If you see that label, do not ship the phone to Apple expecting the normal inspection to resolve it. Finish the repair first, then review the history again and follow Apple’s current trade-in instructions. Keep any repair documentation for your own records and disclose relevant repair or replacement-part information to a private buyer.
Do not assume this requirement determines the result of every private-sale listing. For a private buyer, describe the repair status accurately and follow that destination’s condition and inspection rules. A marketplace may ask for different evidence or may accept a device Apple will not accept for trade-in.

3. Unpair an Apple Watch when applicable
If the iPhone is paired with an Apple Watch, unpair it before handing over the phone. Use the Watch app’s unpair function while both devices are available. Unpairing creates a current watch backup and removes the pairing relationship, which lets the next owner use the iPhone without your watch remaining associated with it.
Complete this before erasing the iPhone. If you erase first, you may need another route to remove the watch pairing or recover the watch’s latest data. This is conditional: if no Apple Watch is paired, there is nothing to unpair.
4. Sign out of your Apple Account, then erase the iPhone
Sign out without deleting synced data
Follow the current on-screen sign-out flow for your Apple Account (formerly called Apple ID). Apple’s handoff guidance places sign-out before erasure. Signing out disconnects the device from your account services; it is not a command to manually remove the content stored in iCloud.
Read each prompt instead of dismissing it quickly. If Apple asks for your account password, passcode, or confirmation related to Find My, complete that verification while the phone is still yours. A buyer should never receive your password, and you should not leave the phone signed in so the buyer can “test” it.

- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Choose Erase All Content and Settings.
- Review the prompts, enter the device passcode or Apple Account password if requested, and confirm.
Do not start this step until the backup and transfer are complete. The command removes the device’s local personal information, settings, and content in one controlled operation. Let the process finish and allow the iPhone to restart; do not interrupt it because the screen appears inactive for a while.
Understand Find My and Activation Lock
Apple states that, when Find My was enabled, erasing the iPhone turns off Find My and Activation Lock so the next owner can activate it. Activation Lock is the account tie that can prevent another person from setting up a device. If the erase flow stops because the account password is required, complete the sign-out and verification rather than giving the phone to the buyer in that state.
After the restart, stop at the initial setup screen. Do not sign back in with your account or complete setup for the buyer. The setup screen is a useful final visual check: it shows that your personal home screen and account data are no longer present and gives the recipient a normal starting point.

5. Handle the SIM, eSIM, and carrier plan separately
Physical SIM
If the iPhone has a physical SIM, remove it before handing over the device. Keep it for your next phone or dispose of it according to your carrier’s guidance. A SIM is tied to your cellular service, not to the phone’s storage erase, so it needs its own handling.
eSIM
For an iPhone using eSIM, choose the erase-device-and-eSIM option when the erase flow presents it for a sale or trade-in. The exact wording can vary by iOS version and region. Apple’s October 5, 2026 eSIM guidance specifically describes erasing the eSIM when selling or trading in an iPhone.
Do not choose an eSIM option casually if you still need the line on that phone. Confirm that the replacement phone or carrier process is ready first, then select the option appropriate for a sale or trade-in. If the wording on your screen differs, use your local Apple instructions rather than guessing from another country’s page.
Canceling or transferring service
Erasing an eSIM does not cancel the cellular plan. Apple instructs customers to contact their carrier to cancel a plan, move the number to a replacement phone, or complete another carrier-specific change. Finish that carrier conversation separately, and do not assume the steps used by one carrier or country apply to another.
The trade-in instructions cited here are for the United States, while the October 5, 2026 eSIM support article is an Ireland-region page. Your carrier and local Apple support pages may use different labels or transfer steps. Keep confirmation of the carrier change until calls, texts, and cellular data work on the replacement device.

6. Complete optional account and service follow-ups
Apple Pay
Apple’s pre-sale checklist includes removing Apple Pay cards and passes as appropriate. Treat this as a service follow-up, not a substitute for the erase command; the secure erase still needs to be completed. If you use transit or other passes with separate account rules, follow the issuer’s instructions as well.
iMessage when moving to a non-Apple phone
If your next phone is not an iPhone, follow Apple’s deregistration guidance for iMessage. This helps ensure that new messages reach your non-Apple phone as standard text messages rather than remaining associated with iMessage. Complete this while you can still receive verification messages on the old number.
AppleCare
Review whether AppleCare should be canceled or transferred under its terms. This depends on your agreement and destination, so handle it separately from device erasure. Do not promise a buyer that coverage transfers unless the applicable AppleCare terms confirm it.
7. Pack an Apple trade-in correctly
Use the supplied kit
For Apple’s route, use the kit intended for the iPhone and follow the included packing directions. Apple says the kit contains what is needed to pack the phone. Do not substitute a different box because it looks sturdier or combine the phone with another shipment; use the destination’s instructions for the device being traded.

Send the phone, not a box of extras
Do not put a case, power adapter, cable, or other accessory in the Apple trade-in package unless the instructions specifically request it. Apple says included extras will not be returned. This rule is specific to Apple’s trade-in process and does not define a private buyer’s requirements.
Keep proof of shipment
Retain the courier receipt and tracking information until the trade-in has been received and processed. If a shipment is delayed or disputed, the receipt is your evidence that you handed over the package. Photographing the sealed package and recording the tracking number can also help you keep an accurate personal record, but follow the carrier’s actual claim requirements if a problem occurs.
8. Prepare a private-sale handoff
Describe condition and repairs accurately
State the model, storage capacity, visible wear, battery information if you choose to disclose it, and any repair or replacement-part history that affects the buyer’s decision. Do not claim that a private platform uses Apple’s “Finish Repair” rule unless that platform says so. Use clear photos and preserve the listing details so both sides share the same description.
Agree on what is included
Write down whether the sale includes a case, cable, charger, original packaging, or no accessories. Package only what you promised, and keep personal items out of the box. Apple’s instruction not to send accessories applies to Apple’s kit; a private buyer may specifically request an accessory, so follow the written agreement instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the destination’s payment and shipping process
Follow the marketplace or buyer’s stated payment, shipping, inspection, and return procedure. Apple’s supplied kit, receipt process, and accessory exclusions apply to Apple’s route, not automatically to another service. Do not hand over the phone based only on a payment screenshot; wait for the destination’s confirmed payment status and retain tracking information.
Hand over an erased phone
Before shipping or meeting the buyer, verify that the iPhone is at the initial setup screen and is no longer asking for your Apple Account. Never provide your account password or leave the device signed in to help the buyer “test” it. If a buyer needs to inspect hardware, let that happen before you erase only when you can keep the phone under your control; erase it immediately after the inspection and before final handoff.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and how to recover
You erased before transferring your data
Stop the handoff and check whether the needed information exists in an iCloud or computer backup. Restore the replacement phone from that backup where possible. If an item was never backed up or synchronized, recovery may not be possible; this is why Apple’s sequence puts backup and transfer first.
You manually deleted photos or contacts while signed in
Check iCloud and your other devices immediately. Because synced deletion can propagate, look in the relevant service’s recently deleted or recovery area before assuming the data is gone. Do not continue deleting items as a way to prepare the phone; use the full-device erase command instead.
The erase flow will not complete
Read the prompt carefully and complete any requested passcode, Apple Account password, or Find My confirmation. An account lock that remains after handoff can prevent the buyer from activating the device. Keep the phone with you until it restarts to the initial setup screen.

You forgot the eSIM
If the phone has already been handed over, contact the carrier promptly about the number and plan, then follow Apple’s regional eSIM instructions. For future handoffs, select the erase-device-and-eSIM choice during the erase flow and separately confirm the carrier change.
You placed accessories in Apple’s kit
Apple says those extras will not be returned. Contact the trade-in service only if you need to clarify a shipment; do not assume an accessory can be recovered. For a private sale, review the written agreement to see whether the buyer expected those items.
You cannot find the trade-in receipt
Search the courier email, printout, or tracking record and keep any available shipment confirmation. The receipt is the most direct evidence of the handoff date and carrier acceptance. If someone else shipped the package for you, ask that person for the carrier confirmation immediately.

- Your replacement phone displays the data and accounts you need.
- The old iPhone has been signed out and erased through Settings, not cleaned by deleting individual iCloud items.
- Find My and Activation Lock are no longer blocking activation when they had previously been enabled.
- The physical SIM is removed, and the eSIM and carrier plan have been handled deliberately.
- An Apple Watch has been unpaired if it was connected.
- Any Apple Pay, iMessage, or AppleCare follow-up that applies to your situation is complete.
- The package contains only what the chosen destination requests, and you have retained shipment proof.
- The phone is showing the initial setup screen and you have not left your Apple Account password, passcode, or personal paperwork with it.
Following this sequence protects your information while leaving the phone in a state that a trade-in processor or private buyer can activate. The decisive distinction is that device erasure removes your local data and account lock; carrier cancellation, service transfers, accessory handling, and marketplace obligations still require their own steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to do before I sell my iPhone?
Back up the phone, finish transferring data to the replacement, check Parts and Service History for a “Finish Repair” entry, unpair an Apple Watch if needed, sign out of your Apple Account, and use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. Remove a physical SIM or deliberately erase the eSIM, then handle the carrier plan separately.
Is signing out of my Apple Account enough before a sale?
No. Sign-out disconnects the phone from your account services, but you should also run Erase All Content and Settings. When Find My was enabled, Apple says the erase process turns off Find My and Activation Lock. Confirm that the phone restarts to the initial setup screen before shipping or handing it over.
Does erasing an eSIM cancel my phone plan?
No. Erasing the eSIM removes its profile from the device; it does not cancel, suspend, or transfer the carrier plan. Contact your carrier to move the number to the replacement phone or cancel service. Carrier steps vary by country and provider.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What does “Finish Repair” mean for an Apple trade-in?
Apple’s current U.S. trade-in guidance says a repair marked “Finish Repair” in Parts and Service History must be completed before the iPhone can be traded in. This does not automatically establish the rule for a private marketplace, so disclose the status and follow that destination’s requirements.
Should I include the charger, cable, or case with an Apple trade-in?
No, unless Apple’s shipment instructions specifically request an item. Apple says its trade-in kit contains the needed packing materials and that cases, cables, adapters, and other included extras will not be returned. Private-sale accessory rules are determined by your listing or buyer agreement.
How can I tell the iPhone is ready for the buyer?
After the erase finishes, the phone should show the initial setup screen and should not ask for your Apple Account. Find My and Activation Lock should no longer prevent activation. Remove the physical SIM, confirm the eSIM and carrier plan were handled, and retain the shipping receipt or tracking record.
The Bottom Line
Back up and transfer first, never delete synced iCloud items manually, then sign out and erase the iPhone through Settings. Handle SIM or eSIM service separately, resolve any Apple trade-in repair requirement, and follow the chosen destination’s packing and payment rules.
