The safest sequence is simple: secure your Apple Account, make or verify a backup, choose the transfer method that matches the source you have, keep the old device powered until you check the new one, and only then erase or hand it over. An iPad can use Quick Start, an iCloud backup, or a computer backup. A MacBook uses Migration Assistant from another Mac, a Time Machine backup or startup disk, or a Windows PC.
Choose the transfer route before you begin
Your best method depends on what is available and whether you want to keep using the old device during the move. Use this comparison before opening the new-device setup screens.
| Route | Source required | What to expect | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPad Quick Start or direct transfer | A nearby compatible iPhone or iPad | Copies settings and, where supported, data directly between devices. | Both devices remain occupied, nearby, connected to power and dependent on the wireless connection until migration finishes. |
| iPad iCloud restore | A usable iCloud backup and the Apple Account used for it | The new iPad can become usable while apps and other content continue downloading over Wi-Fi. | Restore speed depends on the connection and backup size; purchases may require sign-in to the relevant Apple Account. |
| iPad computer-backup restore | A current backup on a Mac or PC | Restores from the backup through the computer. | You need access to the computer and the backup before starting. |
| Mac Migration Assistant from another Mac | The old Mac, connected wirelessly or by a suitable cable | Transfers documents, apps, user accounts and settings. | Large migrations can take hours, and incompatible or newer app versions may not transfer or run correctly. |
| Mac Migration Assistant from Time Machine or startup disk | An external backup disk or startup disk | Moves the selected user data and settings without requiring the old Mac to remain connected. | The backup must be readable and recent enough for your needs. |
| Mac Migration Assistant from Windows PC | The Windows PC and Apple’s compatible migration software | Imports supported user information into the Mac. | Available data and behavior differ from a Mac-to-Mac migration. |
Checklist for either an iPad or a MacBook
Confirm account access
- Have the Apple Account email address and password ready. You can create an account during iPad setup if you do not already have one.
- Keep access to the trusted device or trusted phone number used for verification. Setup pages establish that sign-in is part of the process, but account recovery can require additional steps if you cannot receive a verification code.
- If purchases or media use more than one Apple Account, identify those accounts now; restoring purchased content can prompt for the account that originally obtained it.
Make a fresh backup
Create a new backup, or check that an existing backup is complete, recent and large enough to contain what you need. A backup-based migration cannot restore data that was never included in the backup. Keep the old device available after the backup rather than treating the backup as permission to erase immediately.
Prepare power, network and time
- Charge both devices and keep their power adapters available. Direct iPad migration should remain connected to power until completion.
- Use a reliable Wi-Fi connection for wireless setup and cloud restoration.
- Do not schedule the transfer immediately before travel, work or a deadline. Duration varies with data volume and connection conditions; a Mac migration may take hours.
- If a workplace or school manages the device, follow the administrator’s or teacher’s instructions instead of bypassing management during setup.
Prepare and set up a new iPad
1. Bring the correct source device
For Quick Start, place the previous iPhone or iPad beside the new iPad. Compatible devices can securely copy many settings and preferences. Direct data migration is available only when the devices meet Apple’s current iOS and iPadOS compatibility requirements, so check the setup prompts for the versions installed on your particular devices rather than relying on a single permanent minimum-version claim.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
2. Choose Quick Start and direct transfer
- Turn on the new iPad and place it near the previous iPhone or iPad.
- Follow the Quick Start prompt on the old device, authenticate as requested, and connect the new iPad to Wi-Fi.
- When offered a transfer choice, select direct transfer if you want data copied from the nearby device rather than restored from iCloud.
- Keep both devices close together and connected to power until the progress indicator and setup screens show that migration is complete.
The old device is occupied during a direct transfer. Do not take it away, restart it or assume that a partially visible home screen means every photo, message and app has arrived. Apple notes that timing changes with the amount of data and network conditions.
3. Restore from an iCloud backup
Use this route when the old iPad or iPhone is unavailable, when you prefer a cloud copy, or when you want the new iPad to become usable while content continues downloading. During setup, choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup, sign in to the Apple Account that owns the backup, and select the backup by its date and size. Keep the iPad on Wi-Fi and power while the restore and subsequent downloads continue.
Apple Support says eligible purchasers of a new iPad may receive temporary iCloud storage for a backup for up to three weeks from the purchase date. That is Apple’s stated temporary-backup window, not a guarantee that applies to every buyer, region or purchase circumstance. Confirm the offer shown for your device before depending on it.

4. Restore from a computer backup
If you have an encrypted or otherwise suitable iPad backup on a Mac or PC, select the computer-backup path during setup and connect the iPad to that computer. Use the most recent backup that you have verified. Keep the computer connected until the restore reports completion, then allow time for apps, photos and other content to synchronize.
5. If the new iPad is already set up
Apple notes that restoring through the initial backup setup flow may require erasing an iPad that has already been configured. Decide before adding substantial new photos, messages or documents. If you choose to erase it, make sure anything newly created on that iPad is backed up or copied elsewhere first.
6. Review the iPad before touching the old one
- Unlock the iPad and verify the Apple Account, cellular plan if applicable, Wi-Fi, email and messages.
- Open Photos and Files and check several recent and older items, not only the first screen of thumbnails.
- Open the apps you rely on for work, authentication, banking or school and complete any sign-in or verification they request.
- Confirm that contacts, calendars, notes and other synchronized information are present.
Prepare and migrate to a new MacBook
1. Update and simplify the connection
Install available macOS updates on both Macs before starting. Connect each laptop to power, place them near each other and turn on Wi-Fi. Apple’s migration preparation guidance also recommends temporarily turning off antivirus software, firewalls or VPN software if installed, because those tools can block discovery or the data connection. Re-enable them after migration.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
2. Start Migration Assistant
Migration Assistant can run during the new Mac’s initial Setup Assistant or later from the Mac’s utilities. Apple describes its scope this way: “Migration Assistant transfers documents, apps, user accounts and settings from one Mac to another.” The old Mac is not erased by using it.
- On the new Mac, choose the option to transfer information from a Mac, Time Machine backup or startup disk when Setup Assistant offers it, or open Migration Assistant after setup.
- On the old Mac, open Migration Assistant and choose to transfer information to another Mac when prompted.
- Wait for both computers to display a security code. Continue only when the codes match.
- On the new Mac, select the categories and user accounts to transfer, then start the migration.
- Leave both Macs connected to power and undisturbed until the assistant reports completion.
3. Resolve an account-name collision
If the incoming Mac user has the same account name as an account already created on the new Mac, Migration Assistant presents a choice. Replace the existing account if it is only a temporary setup account and you do not need its data; otherwise rename the incoming account so both accounts remain available. Read the choices carefully because replacing an account changes what is stored under that user profile.
4. Decide between wireless and a cable
Wireless migration is convenient when both Macs can discover each other. Apple’s MacBook Pro guidance says a direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection is often faster than wireless, but the appropriate cable depends on the models and ports. Check the ports on both computers before buying or borrowing a cable; there is no single cable that suits every MacBook combination. A cable improves the connection path, not the amount of data being transferred, so a very large migration can still take considerable time.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
5. Use Time Machine or a startup disk when the old Mac is not the source
Migration Assistant can read a Time Machine backup or startup disk. If you do not have suitable backup storage, an external hard drive or SSD is an optional practical purchase for a Time Machine backup drive or other external storage for Mac migration. Apple’s Time Machine documentation requires an external storage device configured as a backup disk, but it does not require a particular brand, capacity or connector; those choices depend on your Mac and the amount of data you need to retain.
6. Account for application and email differences
Email data may transfer, but the email account can still need to be set up again in the mail app. Incompatible applications, or applications newer than the version supported by the new Mac’s macOS, may not transfer or may not work after migration. Before discarding the old Mac, open the applications that matter and confirm that their licenses, extensions, files and sign-ins are functional.

7. Verify the new Mac
- Sign in and check the expected user account, Desktop, Documents, Downloads and other working folders.
- Open a representative sample of large and small files, including files stored on external or network locations.
- Test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth accessories, printers, displays, cameras, microphones and any essential development or creative tools.
- Check browser profiles, password managers, mail, calendars, messages and authentication applications.
- Run a backup on the new Mac after confirming that the migrated files are present.
Do not erase or hand off the old device too soon
Migration and disposal are separate phases. First complete the backup and transfer, then use the new device for a basic review of essential files, photos, messages, accounts and apps. Only after that should you sign out, erase, sell, trade in or give away the old device.

Important iPad warning
Apple warns against manually deleting iCloud-synchronized items while still signed in as a way to clear an old iPad. Deleting a photo, contact or document can remove it from iCloud and from other connected devices. Use Apple’s current sign-out and erase instructions instead of deleting items one at a time.
MacBook handoff
For a MacBook, use Apple’s current Erase your Mac guidance for the model and macOS version. Apple provides an erase or reset option in Mac Transfer or Reset settings, but the exact sequence and availability depend on the Mac. Do not improvise a handoff procedure from a migration checklist.
Troubleshoot a stalled or incomplete move
The old device is not detected
- Confirm both devices are awake, unlocked where required, on the same Wi-Fi network and connected to power.
- For Mac migration, verify that Migration Assistant is open on both Macs and temporarily disable antivirus, firewall or VPN software as Apple recommends.
- Restarting both devices can clear a discovery problem, but do so only when no transfer is actively writing data.
The transfer is taking much longer than expected
Do not convert an estimate into a deadline. Data size, wireless interference, network throughput, cable choice and the number of applications and files all affect the duration. Leave the devices powered and connected. For a Mac, a suitable direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection may be faster than wireless; for an iPad, moving the devices closer and keeping them on stable power addresses the conditions Apple identifies for direct migration.

Stop before erasing the old device. Make a new backup or select a different backup source. Check the backup date and size during iCloud restore, and verify that the computer or Time Machine disk is readable before relying on it.
An app, account or purchase is absent
Sign in with the Apple Account that originally obtained the purchase, then check for the app’s current compatible version. Re-create mail accounts when necessary. If an app depends on a license, plug-in or service outside Apple’s migration process, retrieve those credentials and installers from the software provider before retiring the old Mac.
The new iPad was already configured
If the required backup restore is available only in the setup flow, back up any new information on the iPad and decide whether erasing it is acceptable. Starting over is safer than mixing an incomplete restore with newly created data.
