Prepare an iPad mini in this order: make and verify a current backup, let iCloud finish syncing, resolve any unfinished repair, sign out of your Apple Account, handle Find My and Activation Lock, erase the iPad with Erase All Content and Settings, and confirm that the Hello screen appears without a previous-owner account request. Only then package or hand it over.
What “ready for trade-in” means
An iPad mini is ready for an upgrade, sale, recycling, or trade-in when your data has been safely transferred, the device no longer depends on your Apple Account, its local contents have been erased, and the next owner can start setup without seeing a previous-owner account prompt. The final proof is the Hello setup screen after erasure.
Do not begin by deleting photos, contacts, or documents one at a time. If iCloud is still enabled, manual deletion can remove the same items from iCloud and from other connected devices. A verified backup followed by Apple’s erase command is the safer sequence.

Before you change account settings
Have the replacement device or backup destination ready
If you are upgrading, keep the new iPad available so you can transfer your backup and check it before wiping the current iPad mini. If you are trading in without an immediate replacement, make the backup and verify it on another device or through the services you use before signing out.

Keep your credentials and records available
- Know the password for the Apple Account currently signed in to the iPad mini. You may need it for sign-out, Find My changes, or authentication.
- Record the iPad mini’s serial number and keep the trade-in estimate, order confirmation, shipping receipt, and tracking number.
- Check the receiving program’s current instructions for accessories, packaging, labels, and in-store or mail-in handoff. Those requirements differ by provider and region.
Allow enough time for a verification pass
Do not erase immediately before a flight, courier pickup, or store closing. You need time to confirm photos, files, messages, contacts, and important app data on the replacement or in the backup, and to recover if a sync or transfer is incomplete.
Step 1: Back up and transfer your data
Create a current backup first
Apple’s iPad preparation guidance says to back up before selling, giving away, or trading in an iPad. Start while the iPad mini is still signed in and connected to a reliable network or the computer you use for backups. Do not sign out or erase until the backup has completed.
A backup is only useful if it contains what you need. Open the replacement iPad, restore or transfer the backup using Apple’s setup flow, and inspect the result rather than assuming that a completed progress bar means everything is present.
Verify the information that matters to you
- Photos and videos: check recent items, albums, and any locally stored media you still need.
- Files: open important documents in the Files app and confirm that cloud and local folders are available.
- Messages and contacts: verify recent conversations, contact groups, and any numbers you rely on.
- App data: open the apps that contain irreplaceable records, such as notes, creative projects, authenticator data, or offline downloads, and follow each app’s own transfer or export requirement.
- Accounts and subscriptions: make sure you know the sign-in details or recovery method for services that will not be restored automatically.
If anything is missing, stop. Keep the old iPad mini signed in, complete another backup or app-specific transfer, and verify again. Erasing first cannot recover data that never reached the backup or replacement.
Step 2: Finish syncing and repair work
Wait for iCloud synchronization
Leave the iPad mini connected to power and a dependable internet connection until pending iCloud uploads and downloads finish. Check the services you use, especially photos, files, contacts, notes, and messages. A backup and synchronization are related but not identical: an item that is still waiting to upload should not be treated as safely available in the cloud.

Check Parts and Service History
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Scroll to Parts and Service History.
- If an item says Finish Repair, complete that process before handoff.
Apple includes this check in its current preparation guidance. An unfinished repair can affect the recipient’s setup or the receiving provider’s inspection, so resolve it before the device leaves your possession.
Step 3: Sign out of Apple services
- Open Settings.
- Tap the Apple Account name at the top of the sidebar.
- Scroll to the bottom of the account page.
- Tap Sign Out and authenticate when prompted.
Signing out disconnects the iPad mini from iCloud, the App Store, and related Apple services. If the device asks whether to keep a copy of information on the iPad, remember that the purpose of the next step is to erase the device; your retained copy should already be protected by the verified backup and completed synchronization.

Check for a network connection, complete any requested account authentication, and resolve restrictions or management settings that prevent account changes. A company- or school-managed iPad may require its administrator to release it.
Step 4: Handle Find My and Activation Lock
iPadOS 27 or later: use Ready for Repair or Trade In when eligible
On iPadOS 27 or later, an eligible trade-in can use Ready for Repair or Trade In in Find My. Apple describes this workflow as a way to keep the device secure and findable in Find My during eligible repairs or trade-ins.
- Open the Find My app.
- Select the iPad mini in your device list.
- Choose Repair or Trade In.
- Tap Enable.
- Authenticate with the Apple Account password when asked.
Use this option only when the trade-in or repair is eligible and the receiving program’s instructions support it. It does not remove the need to back up, sign out as instructed, erase the iPad, and confirm the Hello screen. Treat the post-erase activation test as the definitive handoff check.

Earlier iPadOS versions: turn off Find My
- Open Settings.
- Tap [your name].
- Tap Find My.
- Tap Find My [device].
- Turn off Find My and enter the Apple Account password if requested.
Apple states that turning off Find My automatically removes Activation Lock. Activation Lock is the account-based protection that can prevent another person from activating the iPad mini even after its local contents have been erased. If it remains attached to your account, the recipient may see a request for the previous owner’s Apple Account during setup.
Step 5: Erase all content and settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPad.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Read the summary, tap Continue when shown, and authenticate with the device passcode or Apple Account credentials as requested.
- Keep the iPad mini connected to power until the erase completes and it restarts.
This command removes local personal information, including Apple Pay cards, photos, contacts, music, and apps. Content already stored in iCloud is not deleted by erasing the iPad. That distinction is why you should use this command after a verified backup instead of manually removing individual items while signed in.
Do not stop at a partially completed progress screen or force a restart unless the device is genuinely frozen. If the erase fails, keep the iPad connected to power, note the exact message, and resolve the account, storage, or management issue before sending it away.
Step 6: Verify the handoff state
The required visual check
When the erase is complete, the iPad mini should display the Hello setup screen. Leave it at that screen; do not sign in again or proceed through setup for the recipient.
The required activation check
Start setup only far enough to determine whether the device asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account. A clean Hello screen with no former-owner account request indicates that the iPad is ready for a new owner. If the old account is requested, stop and reconnect the iPad to the internet so you can complete the Find My, Activation Lock, sign-out, or account-removal step. Do not hand over a device that still displays your account.

Step 7: Package and document the handoff
Keep proof until the transaction is complete
Retain the serial number, quoted estimate, trade-in order or receipt, shipping receipt, tracking number, and any photos you take of the device’s condition. These records help you identify the correct unit and resolve a lost shipment, an inspection dispute, or a changed estimate.
Follow the selected program’s instructions
Accessory and packaging rules vary by provider and region. Some programs may ask for only the tablet; others may specify a charger, cable, protective packaging, or a particular shipping label. Follow the current instructions supplied with your transaction rather than assuming that another provider uses the same requirements.
Photograph the iPad mini after it shows Hello, including its exterior condition and serial number if visible. Remove personal labels, SIM-related items, cases, and accessories unless the program explicitly requests them.

Remote erase is a recovery option
If you shipped or handed over the iPad mini before erasing it, use Find My’s remote-erase tools as soon as possible. Remote erasure protects local data, but it does not by itself remove Activation Lock.

Remove the device from your account after remote erasure
After the remote erase has completed, finish the account-removal step in Find My so the next owner can activate the iPad. Apple notes that leaving the device attached to your account can cause the new owner to receive a previous-owner account request even though the contents were erased. Keep checking the shipment or transaction record until the receiving provider confirms acceptance.

Choosing a trade-in route
Apple directs owners to Apple Trade In or recycling after preparation. Eligibility and value depend on region and device condition, so a quoted amount is not universal. If you compare Apple’s route with another provider, evaluate the same criteria for each rather than comparing headline estimates alone.

Do not treat a trade-in estimate as guaranteed value until the provider’s final inspection terms say so. The preparation steps are the same regardless of route, but the commercial terms, regional availability, and accessory rules are not.
Troubleshooting common handoff problems
The backup appears complete, but data is missing
Keep the old iPad mini signed in. Check whether the missing item belonged to an app with its own export or account-based transfer process, and wait for pending iCloud synchronization. Make a new backup or complete the app’s transfer, then verify on the replacement before erasing.

Confirm that the iPad is online and that you can authenticate the Apple Account. Screen Time or device-management restrictions can prevent account changes; a work- or school-managed iPad may need its administrator to remove management. Do not erase a device that still depends on your account unless you know how the account will be released.
Find My still shows the iPad
Reconnect the iPad to the internet and complete the applicable Find My workflow. On systems before iPadOS 27, turn off Find My from the Apple Account settings. On iPadOS 27 or later, use Ready for Repair or Trade In only when the trade-in is eligible and then complete the erase and Hello-screen test.
The iPad asks for the previous owner after erasure
The device is still linked to that Apple Account through Activation Lock. Do not give it to the next owner. Sign in to the account that owns the iPad, remove the device from Find My as appropriate, and repeat the activation check. If you bought the iPad used and cannot reach the former owner, the seller must remove the lock; a proof of purchase alone does not substitute for account removal during setup.
The receiving provider changes the estimate
Use the provider’s inspection and return terms before accepting the revised offer. Compare the final payout, return shipping conditions, and timing with the original quote. Your serial-number record, photographs, and shipping evidence make a dispute easier to document.
