Start with the balloon printer’s template, not an iPad preset. Ask for the exact printable dimensions, balloon material, production process, bleed or safe-area rule, minimum line width, color requirements, and accepted file format. Then build the iPad document at the printer’s finished size (or an agreed scale), use vector artwork for logos and lettering whenever possible, set raster resolution according to viewing distance, and submit a preflighted production file while keeping the editable source.

There is no universal balloon canvas size or single “balloon DPI” value. A small latex balloon, a foil helium balloon, and a giant event balloon have different printable areas and may use different inks and templates.

Get the printer’s specification before opening your iPad app

Balloon printing is constrained by the printable imprint, the balloon’s curvature, the material, and the printing process. The balloon’s inflated diameter is not the same thing as the area that can safely carry artwork. Treat the printer’s dieline or written artwork guide as the controlling specification.

Information to request

  • Balloon material: latex or foil.
  • Inflated diameter and the usable print width and height.
  • Whether the job is one-color, spot-color, or full-CMYK process printing.
  • Required minimum line width and any minimum type size.
  • Bleed, trim, safe-area, and transparency rules.
  • Accepted production format, such as PDF, EPS, AI, PSD, TIFF, or PNG.
  • Whether the printer provides a dieline, artwork checker, proof, or color swatch.
  • Whether the file must be supplied at 100% size or at a reduced scale.

Balloon Printing UK states that it resizes submitted artwork to fit an approximate circular imprint of about 16 cm on latex balloons and about 22 cm on foil balloons, depending on requirements. Printballoon gives examples of about 15 × 15 cm for a 30 cm latex or heart balloon, 40 × 40 cm for a 60 cm giant balloon, and 50 × 50 cm for a 100 cm giant balloon. Those figures illustrate particular products; they are not interchangeable presets. Confirm the dimensions for your order in writing.

Set the finished canvas size correctly

Use the physical print dimensions supplied by the vendor rather than the aspect ratio of the iPad screen. If the printer asks for a 15 × 15 cm imprint, create a square document at that finished size. If the supplied template is circular, keep the important artwork inside the circular safe area even if the file itself is square.

Calculating pixels for a raster canvas

For a raster document, convert the finished dimension to inches and multiply by the target pixels per inch (PPI): pixels = centimetres ÷ 2.54 × PPI. For example, a 16 cm imprint is about 6.30 inches wide:

Finished width 100 PPI 150 PPI 300 PPI
16 cm latex imprint About 630 px About 945 px About 1,890 px
22 cm foil imprint About 866 px About 1,299 px About 2,598 px
40 cm giant-balloon example About 1,575 px About 2,362 px About 4,724 px
50 cm giant-balloon example About 1,969 px About 2,953 px About 5,906 px

These are planning calculations, not instructions to override the vendor. A printer that supplies a 50 cm template at 100 PPI may need a different setup from a printer that requests 300 PPI for close viewing. If the printer wants a reduced-scale file, agree on both the scale and the resolution before creating it; otherwise you can accidentally reduce the effective detail by enlarging a small document later.

Why the screen ratio is irrelevant

An iPad display may be close to 4:3, but balloon imprints can be square, circular, rectangular, or shaped by a manufacturer’s template. A screen-shaped canvas encourages misplaced margins and can force the printer to crop or rescale the design. Start from the supplied physical dimensions and place guides for the print boundary and safe area.

Choose vector or raster construction

Vector is safest for logos and lettering

Vector artwork describes shapes mathematically, so a logo, icon, or wordmark can be scaled to the approved imprint without becoming pixelated. Balloon Printing UK and Printballoon both recommend vector deliverables such as AI, EPS, or PDF for this type of work. Vector paths also make it easier for a printer to separate spot colors and inspect line widths.

Use vector construction when the design is mainly text, geometric shapes, a logo, or flat-color illustration. Keep an editable version with named layers and clearly separated color groups. If the printer asks for outlined text, convert a copy of the type to paths while retaining a live-text master for future edits.

Raster is appropriate for painted artwork

Raster artwork is suitable for textured illustration, brushwork, photographic content, and effects that do not translate cleanly into paths. If you paint in Procreate, begin at the largest practical final-size canvas. Enlarging a low-resolution bitmap after painting cannot recreate missing edge detail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a raster design contains a logo or small type, consider rebuilding those elements as vector artwork and combining them with the painted background. A high-resolution painting can still lose thin lettering or hairline decoration during screen printing, even when it looks sharp on the iPad.

Mixed artwork needs a clear handoff

For a mixed file, tell the printer which elements are vector, which are raster, and which colors are intended as spot inks. Preserve the layered source, but export the production file in the exact format requested. Do not assume that a layered working file is automatically suitable for the press.

Set resolution from viewing distance

Large-format work is normally viewed farther away than a sheet of paper, so a blanket 300 PPI rule can create an unnecessarily heavy file. The Display Link lists 100 dpi at final size as a minimum for its large-format work. CMYKhub gives a distance-based scale, and BannerLab describes practical ranges of about 150 dpi within two metres, 100 dpi for viewing at a few metres, and lower values for more distant displays.

Approximate viewing distance CMYKhub planning value How to use it
0.6 m 300 dpi Close inspection or a small imprint seen nearby.
1 m 180 dpi People can approach the balloon and read detail.
1.5 m 120 dpi Typical near-room viewing.
2 m 90 dpi Readable from across a small room.
3 m 60 dpi Event decoration viewed at a few metres.
5 m 35 dpi Large balloon or installation seen from a distance.
10 m 18 dpi Recognition of broad shapes and lettering, not fine detail.
15 m 12 dpi Distant branding where only major forms need to read.
50 m 4 dpi Very distant visibility; confirm with the printer rather than relying on this alone.

Use the closest realistic viewer distance, then follow the printer’s minimum. A balloon at a reception desk may need more detail than one suspended over a venue. Resolution is measured at final physical size: a 150 PPI file supplied at 50% scale becomes effectively 300 PPI when the printer enlarges it to the finished dimensions, provided the printer has approved that workflow.

Design for curvature, imprint limits, and ink spread

Keep the visual center of the design inside the approved imprint. Avoid putting essential text or a logo against the edge of a circular or oval print area, where curvature and handling make distortion and loss more likely.

Use robust strokes

Printballoon recommends a minimum screen-printing line width of 0.5 mm and warns that hairlines and very fine details can disappear. Make outlines, counters in small letters, and decorative gaps visibly heavier than they appear on the iPad at high zoom. Test the design at the actual physical size, not only at 100% screen display.

At the approved size, inspect the thinnest stroke, the smallest counter in a letter, and the narrowest gap between adjacent shapes. If any feature would be difficult to cut, expose, or register, simplify it before export. A bold simplified mark generally survives a balloon production run better than a detailed miniature illustration.

Allow for registration tolerance

Balloon Printing UK notes that multicolor registration is usually within 1 mm. That tolerance is small, but it matters around fine outlines, reversed type, and adjacent spot colors. Avoid designing critical edges that depend on two inks meeting perfectly. Where appropriate, use a small trap or overlap according to the printer’s prepress instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remember the substrate color

The balloon itself shows through or influences the perceived ink color. A dark latex balloon can make a color appear less bright, while a light or metallic foil surface can change contrast and reflectivity. Evaluate the design on the intended balloon color and ask for a physical proof or swatch when brand color is important.

Choose RGB, CMYK, or spot color with the printer

Do not choose a color mode solely because an iPad app offers it. Large-format suppliers commonly request CMYK or convert incoming files to CMYK. Balloon Printing UK describes latex production with up to eight spot colors, foil production with up to six spot colors, and full CMYK as available processes. The number of inks and the separation method affect both color and registration.

When spot colors make sense

Spot colors are useful for a small number of flat brand colors, especially on a logo. They give the printer discrete ink separations and can avoid an unpredictable four-color build. Ask for the printer’s spot-color naming convention and swatch system; do not invent a spot color name and assume it maps to a physical ink.

When full CMYK is appropriate

Full CMYK is better suited to photographs, gradients, and artwork with many blended colors. The printer may still convert an RGB submission, but bright RGB colors can move toward a duller CMYK equivalent. BannerLab specifically warns about this shift and notes that the substrate changes the final appearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate colors for production

For multicolor work, keep each spot color on a separate, clearly named layer when the vendor requests separations. Do not flatten transparency, knockouts, or overprint behavior without understanding how the printer will interpret them. Request a proof for critical colors, and judge it under lighting similar to the installation rather than only under the iPad’s backlight.

Handle bleed and safe areas as job-specific settings

Balloon printing often places an imprint inside a bounded area rather than trimming a flat sheet, so a generic bleed value can be wrong. Use the balloon vendor’s template first.

Guide Published setting Qualification
The Display Link 12 mm bleed at 100% scale; 6 mm at 50%; 3 mm at 25% Values from its 2022 large-format guide.
CMYKhub 5 mm for single-sided wide-format work; 10 mm for double-sided work General wide-format guidance, not a universal balloon rule.
BannerLab 10 mm bleed and text or logos at least 25 mm inside trim Its own large-format artwork specification.

If the balloon printer gives no bleed instruction, ask whether the design should stop at the imprint boundary, extend beyond it, or remain inside a safe zone. Never add 10 or 12 mm by habit to a small 16 cm imprint; that extra area can materially change the usable artwork.

Build the file on an iPad

Workflow for vector-oriented artwork

  1. Record the approved finished width and height, scale, color process, and safe area in a project note.
  2. Create a document at the supplied dimensions or the agreed reduced scale.
  3. Place guides for the imprint boundary and the inner safe area.
  4. Draw logos, lettering, and simple shapes as vector paths where your iPad app supports them.
  5. Convert a duplicate of the text to outlines if the printer requires paths, while retaining the editable live-text version.
  6. Name layers by purpose and color, such as logo, background, spot red, and knockout.
  7. Check the thinnest stroke against the printer’s minimum; Printballoon’s published screen-printing recommendation is 0.5 mm.
  8. Export the requested vector-capable production format and keep the editable source.

Workflow for Procreate paintings

  1. Set the canvas to the approved physical dimensions and a PPI chosen from final viewing distance and the printer’s minimum.
  2. Keep the artwork centered on the template and leave the specified safe area clear.
  3. Paint at the largest practical canvas size; do not plan to enlarge a small file later.
  4. Use separate layers for background, artwork, text, and any color groups that the printer may need.
  5. Inspect the design at actual print size and simplify hairlines, tiny highlights, and narrow gaps.
  6. Convert or rebuild critical lettering as vector paths when possible.
  7. Retain the editable Procreate document, then export the requested production file.

The official Procreate listing confirms export options including layered PSD, TIFF, transparent PNG, JPEG, and multi-page PDF. Those options are delivery mechanisms, not guarantees that every format preserves vector paths, spot colors, or a printer’s required color profile. Ask which export the vendor wants before flattening the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the right delivery format

Format Best use Important caution
PDF Preferred handoff when the printer requests a press-ready document; can preserve vector paths and page dimensions. Use the printer’s press-quality settings and embed fonts if live text remains.
EPS or AI Vector logos, lettering, and spot-color artwork. Confirm that the receiving printer accepts the specific application version.
Layered PSD Editable raster source and mixed artwork. Keep layers organized and verify that the printer’s workflow supports the color mode and transparency.
TIFF High-quality flattened raster artwork. It does not retain editable vectors or live text; confirm resolution at final size.
Transparent PNG Raster artwork when transparency is explicitly supported. It may be RGB and may not carry the separations or profile the printer needs.
JPEG Preview or a printer-approved flattened image. Compression can damage small type and edges; do not substitute it for a required production file.

Send the production file requested by the vendor plus the editable source only when the vendor asks for it. Include a low-resolution preview or proof reference if requested, but label it clearly so it cannot be mistaken for the press file.

Preflight before uploading

  • Dimensions: Confirm the document’s physical width and height against the approved template.
  • Scale: Verify that any 25%, 50%, or other reduced scale is written in the file notes and agreed by the printer.
  • Resolution: Check effective PPI at finished size, not merely the number shown before scaling.
  • Color: Confirm RGB, CMYK, or spot-color requirements and the intended balloon color.
  • Bleed and safe area: Apply only the vendor’s rule; keep essential content inside the approved margin.
  • Line width: Inspect the smallest stroke and avoid hairlines; use at least the printer’s stated minimum.
  • Type: Outline fonts when requested, or embed live fonts in a PDF if the printer accepts them.
  • Transparency: Check overprint, knockouts, and transparent edges after export.
  • Alignment: Center the design on the actual imprint, not on the full balloon diameter or an iPad-shaped page.
  • Export integrity: Reopen the exported file and inspect it at 100% and at the physical-size preview.
  • Source retention: Save the editable Procreate or layered source with a clear version name.

Use the vendor’s artwork checker or request an advance file review. Balloon Printing UK and Printballoon both describe artwork checking or pre-review, which can catch a wrong canvas size or unsupported format before production.

Common failure modes and fixes

The printer says the artwork is too small

The file may have been built to the iPad’s screen ratio, or the artwork may occupy only a fraction of the approved imprint. Reopen the template, confirm the physical dimensions, and scale the design to the printable area while preserving the safe margin. Do not simply enlarge a low-resolution raster without checking effective PPI.

Colors look dull or different

Determine whether the file was converted from RGB to CMYK and whether the balloon material changed the appearance. Request the printer’s color profile, spot-color references, or a proof. A bright color seen on a backlit iPad cannot be treated as a guaranteed ink match.

The vendor asks for bleed you did not include

Ask whether the request refers to bleed around a flat template, an extension beyond the imprint, or an internal safe area. Apply the exact value at the agreed scale. Published wide-format examples range from 3 mm to 12 mm depending on scale and supplier, so there is no defensible universal default.

Text changes or disappears when the file opens

Convert a copy of the type to outlines or paths, or embed the fonts in a PDF if live text is required. Keep the original editable text in the source file so future revisions remain possible.

The file is too large to upload

Ask whether the printer accepts an agreed reduced scale. Recalculate effective resolution at the finished size, preserve vector elements where possible, and avoid flattening a vector logo into a needlessly huge raster. Never reduce the file without documenting the scale for the production team.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing a production path

Decision Prefer this approach when Main trade-off
Vector versus raster The design is a logo or lettering (vector), or a painterly illustration (raster). Vector scales cleanly but is less natural for textured painting; raster preserves brushwork but depends on adequate final-size resolution.
Spot color versus full CMYK A few controlled brand colors (spot) or photographs and gradients (CMYK). Spot colors simplify flat separations; CMYK handles blends but can shift during conversion.
Latex versus foil The product specification identifies the material. Published example imprint sizes differ, and the substrate changes perceived color and finish.
100% versus reduced scale The approved template fits the production workflow (100%) or the printer expressly permits scaling. Reduced scale can lower file size, but every bleed, line width, and resolution value must be interpreted at the finished size.
Near versus distant viewing People will inspect the balloon closely or see it across a venue. Close viewing supports higher PPI and finer detail; distant viewing permits lower PPI but still needs readable shapes and type.

A practical handoff package

Send one clearly named production file, one editable source, and a short specification note. The note should state the balloon material, inflated size, finished imprint dimensions, file scale, color process, intended balloon color, and any proof approval. Include a preview only when the printer requests one.

For example, a handoff note might say: 60 cm latex giant balloon; 40 × 40 cm approved imprint; supplied at 100%; CMYK process; artwork centered to vendor template; minimum stroke checked at 0.5 mm; PDF production file plus layered source. The values in that example must be replaced with the figures for your order.

Final decision checklist

  1. Have you received the printer’s current template or written specification?
  2. Does the canvas match the approved finished imprint rather than the balloon’s total diameter?
  3. Are logos and lettering vector-based, or was the raster canvas created large enough for final size?
  4. Is the effective resolution appropriate for the closest expected viewing distance?
  5. Are strokes safely above the printer’s minimum and free of hairlines?
  6. Are color mode, spot separations, and substrate appearance confirmed?
  7. Is bleed applied only where the printer specifies it?
  8. Are type, transparency, and profiles handled in the requested export format?
  9. Has the exported file been reopened and checked at physical size?
  10. Have you kept the editable iPad source and obtained artwork approval before production?

The reliable method is therefore specification-first: obtain the template, build at the approved physical size or documented scale, use vector paths for scalable elements, choose raster resolution from viewing distance, design with sturdy lines and safe margins, follow the printer’s color and bleed workflow, and preflight the exact file you upload. That sequence prevents the most expensive balloon-printing errors without relying on a fictional universal iPad preset.
