The safest way to prepare for the next Final Fantasy XIV expansion is to complete the currently available main scenario, verify your service-account licenses and platform, finish important travel and duty unlocks, clear practical inventory space, and wait for the new expansion’s official notes before making purchases or changing your job setup.

As of October 9, 2026, the official material reviewed identifies Dawntrail (released July 2, 2024) and its 7.x updates, including patch 7.5. It does not establish a successor expansion’s name, release date, level cap, jobs, system requirements, download size, maintenance schedule, or exact unlock quest. This guide therefore separates dependable preparation from details that must wait for an official announcement.

What is actually confirmed right now?

The current official Final Fantasy XIV pages reviewed cover Dawntrail and its 7.x patch series. They do not confirm a successor expansion or publish its launch requirements. That distinction matters: a guessed title, date, level cap, new job, required quest, download size, or maintenance window would be speculation rather than a preparation instruction.

Dawntrail launched on July 2, 2024. Its official patch 7.5 information describes continuing story and patch content, not a future expansion checklist. Use those pages as evidence of how an expansion transition can work, not as a template whose numbers and rules can be copied forward.

Final Fantasy XIV Online: 60 Day Time Card [Online Game Code]
  • Adventure awaits you beyond the horizon in FINAL FANTASY XIV.
  • This product is a digital 60-Day Game Time Card for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. It serves as a payment option that allows players to add 60 days of game time to their FFXIV account at the Standard subscription rate, subject to account limits. Both the game and game time are required to play.
  • This product can be redeemed on service accounts registered with the Windows, Mac, PlayStation, or Steam versions of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. However, it cannot be redeemed on service accounts that have only the XBOX or Nintendo Switch 2 versions registered.

When a successor is officially announced, re-check every assumption against its product page, Lodestone notices, patch notes, and platform-specific account instructions. Requirements can differ by service account, platform, edition, and the point in the story at which you are playing.

Prepare in the order that prevents the most problems

  1. Finish the relevant main-scenario quests. Expansion access commonly follows the preceding story in sequence. Complete the current main scenario and any immediately required patches, then verify the announced access quest when the next expansion’s notes are published.
  2. Confirm your license and service account. Check that the platform you use is linked to the correct FINAL FANTASY XIV service account and that the matching expansion license is registered there.
  3. Check progression unlocks. Review aether currents, travel functions, duties, raids, and other content you rely on. Expansion transitions can alter an unlock requirement.
  4. Leave ordinary storage space. New gear, quest rewards, materials, and crafting recipes can make a full inventory inconvenient. Create room without assuming a published slot count.
  5. Read the current job and system notes. Do not lock in a rotation, materia plan, or hotbar based on an older expansion’s actions.
  6. Wait for confirmed technical details. Install updates only after the official launcher, maintenance notice, and system information are available.

Finish the story and unlock requirements

Complete the main scenario before launch

The most reliable preparation is to progress your character through the available main scenario. Major expansions normally continue the narrative rather than offering a disconnected starting point, so an unfinished story can block access even if your character is otherwise well geared.

Do not assume that finishing the last quest you remember is enough. Expansion access may require later patch quests, a specific quest chain, or a level and job condition. The successor’s exact unlock quest is not established in the official material currently available. Once the new notes are published, search the listed access requirements in your journal and confirm that every prerequisite is complete on the character you intend to play.

Use the Dawntrail transition as a warning about unlock changes

Dawntrail’s 7.0 notes documented a changed Endwalker aether-current requirement. Players who met the requirement before the update unlocked flight in each Endwalker area. This is a concrete example of why an apparently completed region can still deserve a review before a major patch.

Before the next expansion, revisit the unlocks that affect how you travel and queue:

  • Aether currents and regional flight.
  • Main-scenario and optional story prerequisites for duties.
  • Dungeon, trial, raid, and alliance-raid access you expect to use.
  • Teleport destinations, attunements, and transportation quests.
  • Crafting, gathering, or role quests that unlock tools you routinely need.

The list above is a preparation audit, not a prediction of the next expansion’s rules. Check the official notes for the final requirements instead of assuming every Endwalker or Dawntrail condition will remain unchanged.

Build a simple prerequisite tracker

A written tracker prevents a common launch-day problem: remembering that you completed a quest but not remembering which character completed it. Make one line for each character you plan to play and record the current main-scenario endpoint, required patch quests, important duties, and travel unlocks. Leave a blank column for the successor’s official access quest, level condition, and any newly stated prerequisites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the tracker as a verification tool, not as a substitute for the final notes. A quest can be complete while a related unlock remains unavailable, and a later patch can change which condition is checked. Re-open the official instructions after maintenance and mark each item only when the game confirms it.

Check your platform, service account, and expansion license

Some additions and adjustments in the Dawntrail patch notes required buying and registering the expansion. That makes account verification a practical pre-launch task, especially if you play on more than one platform or have multiple service accounts.

What to verify

  • Platform: Identify the platform on which you will launch the new content and confirm that the edition you buy supports it.
  • Service account: Make sure the license will be registered to the same FINAL FANTASY XIV service account that contains your characters.
  • Edition: Read what each edition includes rather than assuming a previous expansion license automatically covers an unannounced one.
  • Registration status: Keep the purchase confirmation and verify that the expansion appears as registered before launch.
  • Multiple platforms: If you alternate between platforms, check the platform-specific entitlement rules in the official purchase information.

The current Dawntrail product information lists digital downloads across supported platforms. That catalog and its prices should not be transferred to a future release. Wait for the successor’s own product page before deciding between editions or formats.

Why buying early can still go wrong

A purchase made on the wrong platform or service account may not grant access to the character you intend to play. A previous expansion license is not evidence that a future expansion is included. Until official product information exists, there is no confirmed edition, price, pre-order benefit, or physical package to evaluate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A two-pass entitlement check

Perform the first check before purchasing: sign in to the account that actually holds your characters, identify every platform you use, and read the official edition description. Perform the second check after registration: confirm that the entitlement appears on that same service account and retain the confirmation message. If the account page and the purchase receipt do not agree, contact official support before launch rather than assuming the license will be corrected automatically.

Make practical inventory and storage room

Dawntrail added new gear and crafting recipes. Leaving flexible space for quest rewards, drops, and materials is therefore sensible general preparation. No official page reviewed specifies a required number of empty inventory slots or a mandatory pre-launch purge.

A low-risk cleanup

  1. Move glamour items, crafting materials, and collectibles you are keeping out of your immediate character inventory.
  2. Turn in completed quests and remove obsolete quest objects when the game allows it.
  3. Convert or discard duplicate low-value items only after checking whether you use them for crafting, glamour, housing, or a recurring quest.
  4. Leave room in the locations where rewards are most likely to arrive, including your character inventory and any retainers you use for active work.
  5. Record anything you sell or discard if it has sentimental or collection value; a screenshot or note prevents an avoidable mistake.

Do not buy speculative storage upgrades solely because a future expansion might add items. The official material does not prescribe a storage purchase or a slot target.

Sort by certainty, not by age

Items that look old are not automatically useless. Put them into three groups: items you know you can discard, items you are actively using, and items whose purpose you need to verify. Clean the first group, relocate the second, and leave the third untouched until you have checked its tooltip or an official item reference. This approach creates working space without turning launch preparation into an irreversible collection purge.

Review jobs, actions, and materia after the notes are published

The Dawntrail 7.0 notes explicitly covered job actions, materia, and other system changes. That is a strong reason to treat current rotations, hotbars, macros, and materia melds as provisional whenever a new expansion is announced.

What to save before the update

  • Take screenshots or make a written record of your hotbars, gear sets, HUD layout, and frequently used macros.
  • Note the jobs you actively play and the role each one fills in group content.
  • Keep a copy of important configuration data using the game’s supported backup or export features.
  • Record your current materia and equipment choices so you can compare them with the new tooltips.

What to do after the update

  1. Read the official job-action and system-change sections before entering difficult content.
  2. Open every action on your primary jobs and check changed names, effects, ranges, costs, and level requirements.
  3. Rebuild hotbars where actions were replaced or removed.
  4. Test the updated rotation on a training target or low-risk duty before joining progression groups.
  5. Only then decide whether to remeld, replace gear, or change your role.

Do not reuse Dawntrail-era job guidance as if it were official advice for a later expansion. The successor’s job lineup and balance changes are not established.

Read notes in the right order

Start with access and system sections, then review job actions and materia, and only afterward revisit gear or rotation advice. This order matters because a changed level condition or action replacement can invalidate a plan that looked correct in an older guide. Save a local copy or screenshot of the live tooltips you rely on, since those details are more useful than a remembered rotation from a previous expansion.

Decide what to buy only after official product information exists

There are no two confirmed successor editions, platforms, or preparation products to compare yet. A useful comparison becomes possible when the official purchase page appears.

Decision point What to check Why it matters
Platform compatibility Supported console or PC platform and account linkage A purchase must match the platform and service account used by your character.
License and registration Whether the expansion must be bought and registered separately Patch features may require the matching expansion entitlement.
Edition contents Included game access, bonuses, and upgrade path Different editions can have different entitlements.
Digital or physical format Delivery method, platform code, and registration process Format affects when and how the license is added to your account.
Price and availability Region, currency, sale terms, and release timing Current Dawntrail prices or catalog entries do not establish future pricing.

Until those facts are published, avoid buying an unrelated physical accessory, speculative item, or unverified listing just to prepare for the expansion. No required preparation product is identified by the official material reviewed.

Prepare your computer or console without guessing specifications

The reviewed official pages do not provide successor system requirements, download size, maintenance window, or launch schedule. Do not treat an estimate from an older expansion as a requirement.

Safe technical checks now

  • Confirm that your launcher or console can update FINAL FANTASY XIV and that you can sign in to the correct account.
  • Install operating-system, console, graphics-driver, and launcher updates through their normal official channels.
  • Free enough storage for an update without assuming a particular download size.
  • Check that your network connection is stable and that you know how to restart a stalled launcher safely.
  • Keep your account recovery method current before a busy launch period.

Once the official maintenance notice is posted, write down the stated start and end times in your own time zone. The current evidence does not establish a successor launch schedule, so any earlier time is only an estimate.

Separate preparation from prediction

Checking available disk space and updating a launcher are low-risk actions because they help with any future patch. Buying a new drive based on an assumed download size is different: without an official figure, you cannot know whether the purchase is necessary. Use the same rule for hardware, accessories, and connection upgrades. Prepare what you already control, then wait for the published technical information before spending.

A launch-week plan that avoids preventable delays

When the expansion is announced

  • Read the official product page and patch notes completely, including platform and service-account sections.
  • Write down the confirmed release date, maintenance period, access quest, level requirement, and any changed unlock conditions.
  • Compare editions using the criteria above rather than relying on a retailer description.
  • Update your personal checklist with only confirmed information.

During the final pre-patch days

  • Finish the listed main-scenario and side-content prerequisites.
  • Review aether currents and other travel unlocks in the areas you will revisit.
  • Clear ordinary inventory space and finish pending turn-ins.
  • Back up hotbars, HUD settings, macros, and gear-set information.
  • Check that your registered license appears on the correct account and platform.

After maintenance ends

  1. Allow the launcher or console to complete the official update before starting the game.
  2. Read the live patch notes for changes that affect your jobs, duties, travel, and inventory.
  3. Confirm that the access quest is available and that your character meets every listed prerequisite.
  4. Test important actions and settings in a safe environment.
  5. Report errors through the game’s official support channels rather than repeatedly reinstalling or deleting configuration files.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming an expansion has been announced

Official pages currently establish Dawntrail and its 7.x content, not a successor’s details. Treat headlines, screenshots, retailer listings, and social posts as unconfirmed until the official announcement and notes provide the information you need.

Assuming the old story endpoint is the new access quest

Story sequencing can include later patch quests or a newly specified prerequisite. Finish the available main scenario, then verify the exact quest named in the successor’s official instructions.

Buying the wrong entitlement

Registering an expansion to another service account or platform can leave your intended character without access. Check the account and platform before completing a purchase.

Over-cleaning your inventory

Deleting everything that looks old can remove glamour, crafting, housing, or collection items. Make room methodically and keep anything whose use you have not verified.

Following an outdated job guide

Job actions and materia can change in a major update. Save your current setup, read the new tooltips, and test your job before committing to expensive changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to finish the current main scenario before the next expansion?

Expansion access commonly follows the preceding story, so finishing the available main scenario and required patch quests is the safest preparation. The successor’s exact access quest is not confirmed; verify it in the official notes when published.

Does my current expansion license automatically include the next one?

Do not assume that it does. Dawntrail notes show that some additions require buying and registering the matching expansion. Check the future product page, platform, edition, and service-account instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many inventory slots should I clear?

No official page reviewed gives a required number. Leave practical room for quest rewards, gear, materials, and recipes, but avoid deleting items whose use you have not verified.

Will my Endwalker aether-current unlocks carry over unchanged?

Do not rely on that assumption. Dawntrail’s 7.0 notes documented a changed Endwalker aether-current requirement, showing why travel and duty unlocks should be checked against each new set of notes.

Should I remeld gear or replace my job rotation before launch?

Wait for the expansion’s official job-action and materia changes. Save your current setup, read the live tooltips after maintenance, test the job safely, and then decide whether changes are worthwhile.

Are successor system requirements or download sizes known?

The official pages reviewed do not establish them. Keep your launcher, operating system, drivers, and available storage in good order, then use the published technical information rather than an estimate.

Is there a physical accessory I need to buy for expansion launch?

No required preparation product is identified. Avoid speculative accessories or listings until an official product page establishes what is actually sold and supported.

Where should I get the launch and maintenance time?

Use the official product page, Lodestone notice, launcher message, or patch notes. Convert the published times to your time zone instead of relying on a remembered schedule from Dawntrail.

The Bottom Line

Finish the current story, verify the correct platform and service account, review travel and duty unlocks, make cautious inventory room, and save your job setup. Then wait for the successor’s official product page, patch notes, and maintenance notice before buying, remelding, or treating any requirement as final.
