The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026. You do not need to finish the original game first. The practical preparation is to confirm access to a Switch 2, reserve enough storage for a download that Nintendo currently estimates at 27 GB, decide between physical and digital editions, and choose whether optional features such as ZELDA NOTES, amiibo, or real-instrument ocarina play interest you.
Nintendo has announced overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, modern controls and camera movement, plus new traversal options. Those are announced features rather than hands-on findings, because the remake has not reached its listed release date. This guide separates what is confirmed from what you should wait to judge yourself.

| Preparation item | What is confirmed | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Console | Nintendo lists the remake for Nintendo Switch 2. | Plan to play on a Switch 2. Compatibility with the original Nintendo Switch has not been established, so do not assume the older console will run it. |
| Storage | Nintendo’s US listing currently estimates a 27 GB game file. The listing says product details, including file size, may change. | Check the final eShop size near launch and leave more than the estimate available on the console or compatible storage solution. |
| Game format | A physical launch version with textured foil packaging is planned while supplies last. A digital version is listed separately through Nintendo’s normal store system. | Choose physical if packaging and resale or lending matter; choose digital if immediate download and easy switching matter. Verify regional stock and final edition details. |
| Online membership | Nintendo does not identify Nintendo Switch Online as a requirement to buy or play this remake. | Do not subscribe solely for the remake. ZELDA NOTES also does not require Nintendo Switch Online, according to Nintendo UK. |
| Smart device | ZELDA NOTES is described as a game-specific service in the Nintendo Switch App and requires a compatible smart device. | Install or update the Nintendo Switch App only if you want its daily accomplishments, image challenges and ocarina feature. |
| Original game | Nintendo presents the remake as an entry point to the series and does not state that prior completion is required. | Replay the original only if you want nostalgia, route recognition or a personal comparison. |
What is the release date and which console does it use?
Nintendo lists November 5, 2026, as the release date and identifies the game as a Nintendo Switch 2 title. Nintendo’s US announcement describes it as an adventure through Hyrule in which you become the Hero of Time. Because the date is still in the future at the time of writing, availability, final product specifications and retail inventory can change.
#1 Best Overall
- This is the world edition. It has different packaging but is fully authentic and works on US region 3DS systems.
- The Legend of Zelda veterans can look forward to the Master Quest - a second quest with revamped puzzles and redesigned dungeons.
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is a masterful improvement on one of the landmark releases in video game history.
- “E10+”, w/Animated Blood, Fantasy Violence, Suggestive Themes
The listing does not establish support for the original Nintendo Switch. Treat the Switch 2 requirement as the safe assumption when budgeting or arranging hardware. A Switch 2 can be used in TV, tabletop and handheld modes, and Nintendo lists the remake as a one-player game.
Supported languages and regional ratings
Nintendo’s US listing names Japanese, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Korean, Dutch, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Latin American Spanish, Canadian French, Brazilian Portuguese, Traditional Chinese, American English and Polish among the supported languages. Menu, text and audio behavior can vary by language setting, so select your preferred system language before starting if you want to test the presentation in a particular language.
Ratings are regional rather than universal. Nintendo’s US page displays the ESRB descriptors Animated Blood and Fantasy Violence; Nintendo UK lists PEGI 12. Use the rating authority for your region when deciding whether the game is suitable for a younger player.

No. Nintendo describes the remake as an entry point to the series, and its official story setup is designed to explain the premise: Link is summoned by the Great Deku Tree, the adventure moves across two eras, Ganondorf seeks the Triforce, and Link sets out to save Hyrule. Nothing in Nintendo’s announcement says that finishing the 1998 game, a later re-release or an N64 library version is a prerequisite.
| Choice | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Start the remake without replaying | Players who want to experience Nintendo’s announced visual, audio and control changes with minimal advance familiarity. | You will not have the original’s routes and solutions fresh in memory, which may make the new presentation feel less immediately recognizable. |
| Replay the original first | Returning players who value nostalgia, historical context or direct personal comparison. | Familiarity can reduce surprise, and the remake’s revised dialogue, presentation and movement may make some memories diverge from the new version. |
| Read a plot summary only | Players who want broad context but do not have time for a full replay. | A summary cannot reproduce the original’s puzzles, pacing or discovery, and it may reveal story information before you play. |
If you replay, stop whenever the exercise stops being fun. The announced remake changes enough of the presentation that a second full playthrough is optional rather than required homework.
Understand the premise and core systems without spoilers
The adventure begins when the Great Deku Tree summons Link. Nintendo describes a story that spans two eras, with Ganondorf pursuing the Triforce and Link trying to save Hyrule. The ocarina is central: melodies can open paths and change the time of day. Expect a world containing dungeons and sacred temples, each with puzzles, enemies and treasures.
Time passes in the game. Nintendo UK says day and night can bring different people or enemies, so pay attention to the time of day when an area seems quiet, an encounter is missing or a route appears unavailable. This is a gameplay system, not merely a visual clock.

What to remember if you are new to Zelda
- Explore rather than assuming every objective is reached through a single marked route.
- When a melody produces a new effect, remember where you used it; the same song may be useful in more than one context.
- Search dungeons and temples for puzzles, foes and treasures instead of rushing directly toward the next story scene.
- Expect the adventure to move between two eras, so information or locations introduced earlier may matter later.
These are orientation points, not a demand to memorize a walkthrough. Nintendo’s announcement does not establish a remake-specific strategy guide, and solving the game’s puzzles yourself is part of the intended experience.
What Nintendo says is new in the remake
Nintendo’s US and UK pages describe a substantial presentation and control overhaul. The following items are announced features; they are not independent performance tests or hands-on judgments.
| Announced change | Practical implication before you play |
|---|---|
| Completely overhauled or reimagined visuals | Do not expect a simple resolution bump. Save your comparison with the original until you can see the final release on your own display. |
| Voiced or fully voiced cutscenes | Story scenes will have spoken performances according to Nintendo’s descriptions. The final language and performance quality should be judged after launch. |
| Expanded or new dialogue | Familiar scenes may contain different wording or additional context, so an old script is not a complete substitute for the remake’s version. |
| Symphonic or refreshed orchestral music | The soundtrack has been reworked. A Nintendo Music playlist is an optional listening route, not a requirement to play. |
| Enhanced controls and modern camera movements | Allow time to learn the new control scheme rather than assuming every original input behaves identically. |
| Dash and freely leaping over gaps or obstacles | Nintendo UK specifically describes these movement options. Their exact timing, limits and effect on puzzle solutions are not yet independently established. |
| Horse riding later in the quest | Nintendo UK says a horse can be ridden later in the adventure. It is not presented as an opening ability. |
| Threads of Time | Nintendo UK describes a feature for recapping the story, reviewing current objectives and viewing a tapestry chronicling Link’s journey. |
Because the game had not released at the latest confirmed information date, no reliable claim can yet be made about final frame rate, image quality, difficulty, loading behavior, control feel or the full extent of gameplay changes.
Set up storage and choose physical or digital
Digital preparation
- Check the free space on your Switch 2 before preloading or downloading.
- Use Nintendo’s final eShop listing near November 5 to confirm the download size. The current US estimate is 27 GB and is explicitly provisional.
- Leave additional headroom for the system’s download process and any update. Nintendo has not published a final update size here, so do not treat 27 GB as a guaranteed total.
- Confirm that your Nintendo Account and intended region are ready before purchase.
Digital is the convenient choice when you want to switch between installed games without changing cards and do not need a package. It also makes storage planning more important.

Nintendo of America’s September 8, 2026 Direct description says a physical version with special textured foil packaging will be available at launch while supplies last. That statement supports the existence of a physical launch version, not guaranteed stock in every country or at every retailer. Confirm the exact regional edition, delivery timing and inventory before relying on it for launch day.

Physical is useful if you prefer a package, want to lend a copy or want to avoid making the entire game download part of your launch-day plan. It does not eliminate the need to check for possible updates or confirm the console’s requirements.
Use ZELDA NOTES only if it adds value for you
ZELDA NOTES is described by Nintendo as a game-specific service in the Nintendo Switch App. Nintendo lists three functions: daily accomplishments, image-based challenges that ask you to find locations, and a way to play ocarina melodies on a smart device. Nintendo UK says a compatible smart device is required and that Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use the service.
Preparation steps
- Confirm that your phone or tablet is compatible with the Nintendo Switch App.
- Install or update the app before starting the game if you want to use ZELDA NOTES on launch day.
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account associated with your play setup, following the app’s own prompts.
- Allow the app only the device permissions it actually requests and that you are comfortable granting.
- Test the service before relying on it for a challenge or daily accomplishment.
The app is optional. You can complete the remake without it, and Nintendo does not identify it as a substitute for the game itself or as a required online mode.
Choose how you will play ocarina melodies
Nintendo describes three input approaches:
- Button controls: the straightforward option when you want a consistent input method on the console.
- Humming into the Switch 2 microphone: Nintendo says you can try humming melodies into the system’s built-in microphone. Treat this as an optional interaction, not a guaranteed replacement for every button input.
- A real ocarina: Nintendo says players can try playing songs on a physical instrument. You do not need to own one to play the game.
If you already own an ocarina, practice only if you enjoy the musical side of the game; no specific instrument model, tuning or purchase is identified as a requirement. If you do not own one, use buttons and decide later whether the optional microphone or instrument approach suits you.
Know what Nintendo Switch Online does and does not provide
The remake is listed as a separately sold Nintendo Switch 2 game. Nintendo does not identify Nintendo Switch Online as necessary to buy or play it, and Nintendo UK specifically says the ZELDA NOTES service does not require that membership.
Nintendo’s Classics information describes Nintendo 64 titles as part of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, with access tied to an active subscription. That is a different access model from purchasing this remake. A subscription that provides an N64 classic does not automatically mean you own the remake, and buying the remake does not require subscribing merely to start the game.

Nintendo’s official Ocarina of Time playlist on Nintendo Music also requires Nintendo Switch Online. Listening through that service is optional and separate from playing the remake.
Decide whether amiibo extras matter
Nintendo says existing Zelda-series amiibo can provide in-game extras. They are optional enhancements, not stated requirements for story progression or basic play.
Nintendo has also identified Young Link and Young Zelda figures scheduled for 2027. Their announced timing is after the game’s November 5, 2026 release date, so do not plan on those specific figures being launch-day necessities. If you already have compatible Zelda-series amiibo, check the final game instructions for the exact function and any regional or software requirements after release.
A practical launch-week plan
One week before release
- Confirm that you have access to a Nintendo Switch 2 rather than assuming original Switch compatibility.
- Check console storage and decide whether the provisional 27 GB digital estimate fits comfortably.
- Choose physical or digital based on stock, delivery, packaging and convenience rather than an invented price difference.
- Install or update the Nintendo Switch App if you plan to use ZELDA NOTES.
- Decide whether you want a spoiler-free first run or a nostalgia-focused replay of the original.
On launch day
- Verify the final eShop file size or inspect the physical package and system requirements.
- Update the console and game if an update is offered, allowing enough storage and time.
- Set your preferred language and play mode: TV, tabletop or handheld.
- Choose button ocarina controls first if you want the most predictable setup; experiment with humming or an instrument later.
- Open ZELDA NOTES only if you want its accomplishments, image challenges or smart-device ocarina feature.
- Give the new camera, movement and dialogue time to establish their own feel before judging them against the original.
During the first session
Pay attention to the tutorial information about movement, camera control and melodies. The remake’s announced dash, jumping and modern camera systems may alter how familiar spaces are approached. Keep track of objectives through Threads of Time if you want an in-game recap rather than an external guide.
Common preparation mistakes to avoid
- Buying for the wrong console: the confirmed listing is for Nintendo Switch 2, and support for the original Switch is not established.
- Treating 27 GB as final: Nintendo labels the US file-size estimate as subject to change.
- Assuming a subscription is mandatory: Nintendo Switch Online is not identified as a requirement for the remake or ZELDA NOTES.
- Believing the original is required: Nintendo presents the remake as an entry point and does not require prior completion.
- Expecting every announced feature to be independently verified: visuals, voice acting, controls, camera movement, traversal and music descriptions come from Nintendo’s product announcements before release.
- Planning around the 2027 amiibo figures: Young Link and Young Zelda are announced for 2027, after the listed game launch.
- Assuming physical stock is unlimited: the textured-foil physical version is stated to be available while supplies last, with regional inventory still to be confirmed.
What remains unknown until release
Preparation is possible without pretending that unanswered questions have already been tested. The available official information does not establish the final frame rate, resolution or image quality, loading performance, battery behavior in handheld play, control latency, difficulty balance, exact extent of puzzle or dungeon changes, or whether every language receives identical voice coverage. It also does not establish a remake-specific official strategy guide.
Use Nintendo’s final product page and the eShop listing near launch to recheck the release date, file size, rating and edition details. After release, hands-on testing will be needed before making stronger claims about performance or how the remake compares with the original.
