The safest cave preparation in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is flexible rather than a fixed checklist: carry healing food, cook for the environmental conditions on your route, keep Brightbloom Seeds for darkness, bring usable weapons, and be ready to leave instead of forcing a fight. Ordinary caves and the Depths need different planning. In a cave, Ascend can provide an emergency exit when the ceiling allows it; in the Depths, light and stamina management matter before you worry about monsters.
What to prepare before entering a cave
There is no official universal number of meals, seeds, or weapons that every cave requires. The right loadout depends on how far you are from safety, whether the route is dark, what enemies you expect, and how much equipment Link has at that point in the story. Prepare enough to recover from mistakes, illuminate an uncertain path, and disengage if the encounter is beyond your current gear.
Start with healing food
Nintendo Support’s basic advice is simple: “Remember to cook!” Food and cooked meals replenish lost hearts, so do not rely on raw ingredients if you can cook before setting out. A few reliable healing meals are more useful than filling every inventory slot with ingredients you may not have time to process in a fight.
- Cook before leaving a settlement, stable, or other convenient cooking location.
- Keep healing meals in an easily recognized part of your inventory so you can select one quickly after taking damage.
- Bring meals that restore the amount of health you are likely to lose, rather than spending rare ingredients on a dish when ordinary ingredients will do.
- Separate healing supplies from meals made for glow, stamina, or other effects so you do not consume the wrong item under pressure.
Cooking is also useful for exploration that is not combat. Nintendo’s beginner guidance recommends food or cooked meals for replenishing lost hearts, and its support guidance recommends cooking to withstand environmental conditions and restore stamina. Treat food as both emergency health and route preparation.

Match meals to the route
A short, well-lit cave near a safe area puts less pressure on your inventory than a long trip through the Depths. Before cooking, ask what the route will demand:

Do not interpret the table as a required inventory count. Nintendo’s published guidance does not establish a fixed loadout or a minimum weapon strength for caves.
Carry weapons you are willing to use
Enter with weapons appropriate to the enemies you expect, but do not save every usable weapon for a hypothetical boss. A weapon that sits unused while you take avoidable damage is not helping you. At the same time, early-game players with minimal equipment should not assume every cave must be cleared immediately. Fighting is optional when your gear is weak.
Defeating enemies can still be worthwhile: Nintendo’s beginner material notes that combat can provide drops, food, weapons, and practice for later bosses. Use that benefit to make a deliberate choice, not to justify a fight that leaves you unable to finish the route. If a monster group is consuming your best resources, disengaging preserves those resources for a later attempt.
Light the way without wasting time
Brightbloom Seeds for ordinary caves
Brightbloom Seeds are found in caves and wells around Hyrule. They illuminate when thrown, and they can be fused to an arrow to send light farther or place it more precisely. Pick them up during ordinary cave trips even if the current passage is bright; that reserve can be useful later in a darker cave or in the Depths.
Throwing a seed is the low-friction option when you are standing near an uncertain area. Fusing one to an arrow is useful when you want to light a distant ceiling, ledge, or corridor without walking into the darkness first. Neither method is universally better:

Nintendo’s official advice about Brightbloom focuses especially on navigating the darkness of the Depths, but the seeds are not exclusive to that region. Caves and wells are places to collect them before you need them.

Brightcaps and Glowing Cave Fish can be cooked into meals that give Link a temporary glow effect. These meals are an alternative or supplement to placing individual seeds. They can be convenient when you expect to walk through darkness for a sustained period and want the light effect attached to Link rather than to each section of terrain.
Glow food does not replace healing. Keep glow-effect meals distinct from heart-restoring meals, and make sure you know which dish you are selecting before entering a dangerous room. The effect is temporary, so use it to support a planned stretch of exploration rather than treating it as permanent illumination.
Ordinary caves versus the Depths
“A cave” and “the Depths” are not interchangeable preparation problems. Ordinary caves often have a visible entrance, a nearby surface exit, and enough ambient light to identify some hazards. The Depths are defined by extended darkness and require deliberate illumination so you can see terrain, routes, and threats.
Preparation for an ordinary cave
- Cook healing food and any meals suited to the conditions you expect.
- Check that your weapons are usable and that you have at least one way to deal with the enemies you may meet.
- Keep Brightbloom Seeds available, even if the entrance is bright.
- Look at the cave geometry as you move. Identify open ceilings or vertical spaces that might allow Ascend if a fight goes badly.
- Before attacking a group, decide where you will retreat if the first exchange goes against you.
Preparation for the Depths
- Carry Brightbloom Seeds and decide whether you will throw them for nearby illumination or fuse them to arrows to light the route ahead.
- Consider cooking meals with Brightcaps or Glowing Cave Fish for a temporary glow effect.
- Bring healing food before descending; darkness makes navigation errors and surprise encounters more costly.
- Plan stamina support for routes that involve climbing, gliding, or extended movement. Nintendo’s support guidance specifically includes cooking to restore stamina and withstand environmental conditions.
- Use Giant Brightbloom Seeds attached to vehicles as headlights when vehicle travel is part of your plan.
Do not describe Brightbloom Seeds as a special item available only after entering the Depths. Collecting them in caves and wells on the surface gives you a practical reserve before a descent.

What to do when monsters surround you
Try Ascend as an emergency exit
Nintendo’s official game tips give a direct cave escape suggestion: “if you find yourself surrounded by enemies while exploring a cave, try using Ascend to give yourself a quick exit.” Ascend can move Link through a ceiling when the cave’s geometry permits it, letting you leave the immediate encounter instead of trading hits in a confined space.

Ascend is not a universal escape button. It needs a suitable surface above Link, and some rooms, overhangs, or blocked areas will not provide a valid path. Use it as soon as the room layout gives you a plausible exit, rather than waiting until your hearts are nearly gone. If the preview does not show a usable route, switch to movement, food, or another plan instead of repeatedly attempting the same spot.
Create distance before healing
Healing is safest after you have broken contact. Move toward an open section, a bend, a ledge, or a possible Ascend point before opening the menu. Eating while enemies remain close can turn a recoverable mistake into a defeat, particularly in a narrow passage where several monsters can attack at once.
Use the environment to separate enemies
A cave does not always require you to fight an entire group simultaneously. Backing through a doorway or around a bend can reduce the number of enemies that can reach you at once. If the route gives you a higher or lower position, use that space to make the encounter more manageable. The goal is not to prescribe one attack sequence; it is to avoid standing in the center of a group when a safer position is available.

Fight, avoid, or leave: a practical decision framework
Choose the response that preserves your ability to complete the objective. Nintendo’s beginner guidance explicitly treats avoiding combat as an option early in the game when equipment is minimal. That is not a failure state; some caves can be revisited after you have better equipment or more confidence.

Conversely, fighting every monster on sight can consume the supplies you need for the rest of the expedition. Reassess after the first exchange rather than committing because you already started.
A step-by-step cave expedition routine
1. Check the route before you leave
Look at the destination and decide whether this is a quick surface cave, a long underground route, or a descent toward the Depths. The darker and more remote the route, the more valuable light and stamina preparation become.

2. Cook a small, purposeful set of meals
Prepare heart-restoring meals first. Add route-appropriate meals for environmental conditions or stamina, then make glow meals if darkness is expected. There is no need to chase a theoretical perfect recipe; the useful distinction is what each meal does and when you can safely consume it.
3. Organize the inventory you will actually use
Keep healing, glow, and other special-effect meals recognizable. Confirm that Brightbloom Seeds are available and that your preferred method—throwing or arrow fusion—will be practical in the upcoming space. Check weapons before entering rather than discovering their condition in the middle of a fight.
4. Mark an escape option as you explore
Notice open ceilings, side passages, and the direction of the entrance. If enemies appear, you will already know whether Ascend or a retreat route is plausible. In the Depths, light the terrain progressively so you do not lose your sense of direction.
5. Reassess at the first serious encounter
Ask whether the enemies block your objective, whether your weapons are performing adequately, and whether you have room to move. Fight if the answer is favorable. Otherwise, avoid the group, move past it, or use Ascend where the cave allows.
6. Leave before supplies become the emergency
Do not wait until every meal is gone or every weapon is failing. A retreat that happens while you still have health and options is controlled exploration; a retreat after those resources are exhausted is a recovery problem.

Entering with ingredients but no cooked food
Raw ingredients do not give you the same immediate readiness as prepared meals. Correct this by cooking before departure and reserving at least one clearly identifiable healing option.

Assuming darkness means you need a fixed number of seeds
Nintendo does not publish a universal seed count. Carry a practical reserve, collect more when you find them, and combine thrown or arrow-fused placement with glow-effect meals when appropriate. The route, not a fixed number, determines how much you will use.
Saving all weapons for later
Preserving every weapon can make a current encounter harder than necessary. Use suitable equipment when it helps you survive, then retreat if the cost of the fight is disproportionate to the objective.
Trying to Ascend in every room
Ascend depends on cave geometry. If there is no valid ceiling route, repeated attempts waste time while enemies continue attacking. Move toward a location where the ability can work, or use a conventional retreat.

Surface cave familiarity does not solve extended darkness. Prepare Brightbloom Seeds, consider glow food, and use Giant Brightbloom Seeds on a vehicle when driving. Keep healing and stamina support ready because navigation itself can consume resources.
Forcing a fight because the monsters look intimidating
Appearance is not a requirement to engage. If the encounter is optional and your gear is limited, leaving and returning later is consistent with Nintendo’s beginner advice. Combat rewards are useful, but they are not worth an avoidable defeat.
When a mechanic or control is unclear
If you are unsure how to use an ability, item, or control, check the in-game controls and the hints in the Adventure Log. Nintendo Support specifically points players toward those references when a task or mechanic is unclear. Confirming the control before entering a dangerous room is faster than experimenting while surrounded.
