Reserve 5 GB of free space for Backrooms: Impending Doom. The current English Steam listing gives that same available-space requirement for both its minimum and recommended configurations. It strongly recommends an SSD, but does not make an SSD mandatory or state a required SSD capacity. The minimum target is 1080p at Low settings and 60 FPS with DirectX 12; the recommended target is 1080p at Medium–High settings and 60–120 FPS.
Those figures are publisher-entered Steam targets, not independent benchmark results. The game is still in development, and older Steam snapshots listed different requirements, so check the live listing again when you install.
Quick answer: what your PC needs
For the current Steam listing, plan around the following baseline:
- Operating system: Windows 10 64-bit at minimum; Windows 10 or Windows 11 64-bit recommended.
- Processor: Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 minimum; Intel Core i5-12400F or AMD Ryzen 5 5600 recommended.
- Memory: 8 GB RAM minimum; 16 GB recommended.
- Graphics: GeForce GTX 1060 3 GB or Radeon RX 580 minimum; GeForce RTX 3060 6 GB or Radeon RX 6700 XT recommended.
- Graphics API: DirectX 12 for both tiers.
- Storage: 5 GB of available space for either tier.
- Target settings: 1080p, Low and 60 FPS at minimum; 1080p, Medium–High and 60–120 FPS recommended.
“Available space” is not the same as a measured installed size. Steam does not separately publish the download size or the final footprint of the installed files. Keep more than the listed 5 GB free so Steam and Windows have room for temporary download, unpacking and update files.

The table below reproduces the current English Steam listing. The settings and frame-rate figures are targets stated on that page, not results from an independent test.

What the minimum tier means
The minimum row is intended for 1080p with Low visual settings and a 60-FPS target. It is not a promise that every computer containing one of the named parts will maintain 60 FPS in every scene. Frame rate can vary with drivers, background programs, thermal limits, game updates and settings that are not specified on the listing.
What the recommended tier means
The recommended row moves to Medium–High settings at 1080p and lists a 60–120-FPS target. That range is unusually broad: a system may be suitable for a stable 60 FPS without being able to hold 120 FPS. The listing does not provide a benchmark, frametime graph or test methodology, so use the range as a planning target rather than a measured guarantee.

Steam states that DLSS and DLAA require DirectX 12 and a compatible RTX graphics processor. A non-RTX card should not be treated as eligible for those features simply because it meets another part of the recommended specification. The listing does not state which individual RTX models are supported beyond naming the RTX 3060 6 GB in the recommended hardware.

How to check whether your PC is a match
Compare your existing hardware before buying or replacing anything. A different model name is not automatically slower or faster than a listed part, and the Steam page does not provide equivalent-performance benchmarks.
- Check Windows: Open Settings → System → About. Confirm that the edition is 64-bit and that your version is Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Check the processor and memory: In the same About page, note the processor model and installed RAM. You need at least 8 GB for the minimum tier and 16 GB for the recommended tier.
- Check the graphics card: Open Task Manager → Performance → GPU, or run
dxdiagand inspect the Display tab. Record the exact GPU model and dedicated video-memory figure. - Check DirectX: Run
dxdiag; the System tab shows the installed DirectX version. The listing calls for DirectX 12. - Check free space on the installation drive: In File Explorer, right-click the drive you use for Steam and choose Properties. Make sure the drive has more free space than the 5-GB listing requirement, not merely 5 GB exactly.
If your computer falls between the two rows, treat it as an uncertain case. The listing names specific processors and GPUs but does not establish how an unlisted equivalent performs. Do not infer a guaranteed result from a part number alone.
Storage: 5 GB available is a reservation, not the final install size
Steam currently asks for 5 GB of available space in both the minimum and recommended configurations. That number describes the space Steam wants available before installation. It is not a measured statement that the downloaded archive or installed game occupies exactly 5 GB.

Why the distinction matters
Steam may need working room while it downloads, decrypts, unpacks and verifies files. Updates can also require temporary space before old files are removed. Windows and other applications need free space on the same drive as well. A drive showing exactly 5 GB free can therefore fail even though the store page says 5 GB.

How much space to leave in practice
The official listing does not specify a larger buffer, so there is no evidence-based “true install size” to substitute for 5 GB. The practical rule is to clear substantially more than 5 GB before starting, then keep additional headroom for updates and normal Windows operation. Do not describe that extra room as the game’s required footprint; it is installation and maintenance margin.
Choosing the installation drive
When Steam asks where to install, select a drive with the most reliable free capacity and, preferably, solid-state storage. If your system drive is nearly full but a secondary drive has room, create or select a Steam library on the secondary drive. The listing does not require a particular drive letter, interface or SSD model.
SSD guidance: strongly recommended, not listed as mandatory
The Steam page strongly recommends an SSD. It does not say that the game refuses to run from a hard-disk drive, and it does not publish a minimum SSD capacity, interface standard or throughput figure. Therefore, an SSD is a sensible performance and loading choice, not a stated minimum requirement.

Solid-state storage generally reduces seek and loading delays compared with a mechanical drive, but the listing supplies no loading-time measurement. It also does not establish that an SSD will increase the game’s frame rate. GPU, CPU, memory, drivers and in-game settings remain separate considerations.

Do not buy storage solely for this title
Because the only published storage figure is 5 GB of available space and no measured installed footprint is given, this game alone does not establish a capacity requirement for a new SSD. Check how much space your other games, applications and Windows updates consume before deciding whether an upgrade is worthwhile.
Preparing Windows and Steam before installation
- Update Windows within your normal maintenance policy. The listed operating systems are 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. Avoid starting an installation while a major feature update is waiting to reboot.
- Update the graphics driver from your GPU manufacturer. A current driver can improve compatibility, but the Steam listing does not promise a particular driver version.
- Close applications that consume memory or disk bandwidth. With only 8 GB RAM, browsers, launchers and recording tools can leave less memory for the game. The listing does not state a background-process allowance, so this is a general preparation step rather than a game-specific requirement.
- Confirm DirectX 12 support. The requirement is the graphics API version, not merely the presence of an older DirectX runtime. Use
dxdiagto inspect the reported version and GPU capabilities. - Check the Steam library’s free space. Verify the destination drive immediately before clicking Install. Leave room for temporary files rather than relying on exactly 5 GB.
- Allow Steam to finish downloads and verification. Interrupting an install while files are being unpacked can create a partial installation that needs repair or re-download.
If installation or launch fails
Steam says there is not enough disk space
- Check the free space on the specific Steam library drive, not just the drive containing Windows.
- Empty the Recycle Bin and remove unneeded downloads or applications, then restart Steam so it refreshes the available-space reading.
- Leave more than 5 GB free for temporary files and updates. The store listing does not publish a smaller exact buffer.
- If another Steam download or update is running, pause it and retry after confirming the correct library location.
The game will not start or reports a graphics/API error
- Confirm that Windows is 64-bit and meets the listed Windows 10/11 range.
- Run
dxdiagand verify DirectX 12 is present. - Check that the game is using the intended discrete GPU on systems with integrated and discrete graphics.
- Update or reinstall the graphics driver, then restart Windows.
- Use Steam’s installed-file verification tool if the download was interrupted or files became corrupted.
These steps address common installation and compatibility conditions; they do not create a guarantee for hardware below the published minimum.
Performance is below the expected target
- Start at 1080p and Low settings, which is the minimum listing target.
- Close overlays, capture tools and background applications that compete for CPU, GPU or RAM resources.
- Check temperatures and clock speeds for throttling, especially on laptops.
- Confirm that the display cable is connected to the intended graphics card and that the game is not running on integrated graphics.
- Remember that Steam’s 60-FPS and 60–120-FPS figures are stated targets, not independently measured results. A discrepancy is not proof of a defective component without a controlled test.
Older listings and why the numbers may differ
Captured older Steam pages show different fields from the current English listing. One older version lists DirectX 11 and 3 GB of storage in its minimum section, while the current page lists DirectX 12 and 5 GB. Some translated snapshots also show different memory values.
Use the current English listing as the present reference, and recheck the live page before installation or publication. Requirements can change as development continues. Steam’s Early Access notice states: “Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further.”

Prologue, release status and what you can install now
Steam currently presents a free demo called the Prologue. The full game, described as including Episode 1 and Episode 2, is planned for a later release. The English store page currently surfaces January 20, 2027 as the planned release date and says the game is not yet available for download.
Both availability and the planned date are volatile. A planned date is not a guarantee, and a demo’s requirements or content can change before the full release. Check the live Steam page for the latest status rather than assuming that a page captured earlier has the same files or schedule.
Should you upgrade your PC?
You already meet the minimum row
Try the game at the listed minimum target—1080p, Low settings and 60 FPS—before buying hardware. The minimum row is the relevant starting point for an existing PC; it does not require you to own the recommended GPU or 16 GB of RAM.
You have 8 GB RAM but otherwise recommended-class parts
Memory is the clearest difference between the two rows: 8 GB minimum versus 16 GB recommended. An upgrade may reduce pressure from Windows and background applications, but the listing does not provide a memory benchmark or state that 8 GB will fail.
Your GPU is below the named minimum
The page names GTX 1060 3 GB and RX 580 as minimum alternatives. It does not provide an equivalence chart for other GPUs, so do not classify an unlisted card solely by its generation, brand or memory amount. Compare independent specifications only if you are prepared to evaluate the result yourself; the official requirement alone cannot certify it.
You want DLSS or DLAA
Plan around an RTX-compatible GPU and DirectX 12. The recommended listing names an RTX 3060 6 GB as one option, but it does not say that every RTX card or every driver supports every feature in every configuration.
Your drive is nearly full
Free space is the first issue to solve, but the official data does not justify buying a particular SSD size. Clean up the existing drive, use another Steam library or assess your broader storage needs before purchasing hardware.

- Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit.
- At least 8 GB system RAM; 16 GB for the recommended tier.
- Processor and GPU compared against the exact Steam-listed models.
- DirectX 12 available.
- More than 5 GB free on the selected Steam library drive.
- SSD available if possible, while recognizing that Steam labels it strongly recommended rather than mandatory.
- Graphics driver and Windows updates completed without a pending restart.
- Expectations set correctly: 1080p Low/60 FPS minimum target, or 1080p Medium–High/60–120 FPS recommended target.
- Live Steam listing checked again because the game is still in development.
