The most effective preparation is role-specific: start with the job description and the interview format your recruiter provides, then divide your practice among coding, computer-science fundamentals, machine-learning concepts, project evidence, and communication. There is no universal fresher question list. Microsoft says its process varies by role, Amazon advises candidates to ask their recruiter which skills are likely to be discussed, and OpenAI notes that assessment formats vary by team.

1. Decode the role before you study

Read the posting line by line and turn each requirement into a preparation category. Mark whether it concerns software and coding, data and statistics, machine-learning or AI concepts, model deployment and application development, projects, or communication. Then decide what kind of position it most resembles:

  • ML engineering: usually combines software development with data preparation, model training, testing, and production concerns.
  • Applied AI engineering: may emphasize integrating models into applications, writing reliable services, and evaluating user-facing behavior.
  • Data science: may place more weight on statistics, experimentation, analysis, and communicating findings.
  • Research-oriented work: may require deeper mathematical or paper-level understanding in the specialty named by the posting.
  • General software engineering with an AI focus: can still test algorithms, data structures, operating systems, databases, networking, and programming.

Microsoft describes AI engineering as work spanning software development, programming, data science, and data engineering, including sourcing data, creating and testing machine-learning models, and implementing AI applications. That breadth is why the title alone cannot tell you how to allocate your study time.

Ask for the actual format

Contact the recruiter or recruiting point of contact before building a detailed schedule. Ask:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Which interview stages are planned and how long each lasts?
  • Will there be live coding, pair programming, a take-home project, a technical test, a portfolio discussion, or a combination?
  • Which programming languages and execution environments are permitted?
  • Will you use a shared editor, a notebook, a browser, or a local setup?
  • What topics are most relevant to this requisition?
  • What are the rules for external references, code completion, and AI tools?

OpenAI says AI and other tool allowances vary by assessment and are explained in preparation materials. If the instructions are unclear, ask rather than assuming that a tool is allowed or prohibited. Follow the invitation and recruiter guidance for your particular process.

2. Build a coding baseline you can demonstrate aloud

Choose one language you can write confidently without switching syntax during the interview. The goal is not to memorize every library; it is to produce correct, readable code while explaining decisions and checking your work.

Practice outside an IDE

Amazon’s software-development interview guidance recommends coding practice outside an integrated development environment. Reproduce that constraint regularly: write functions in a plain editor or on paper, trace them manually, and test with small examples. This exposes gaps that autocomplete can hide.

  1. Restate the problem and clarify inputs, outputs, constraints, and error cases.
  2. Propose a straightforward approach before optimizing it.
  3. Choose data structures deliberately and explain the expected time and space cost.
  4. Implement incrementally, narrating invariants or assumptions.
  5. Run normal, boundary, empty, duplicate, and adversarial cases.
  6. Review the code for clarity, failure handling, and unnecessary work.

Cover the computer-science topics the role names

Amazon’s published software-development topic list includes programming, data structures, algorithms, databases, distributed computing, operating systems, internet topics, and general AI and machine learning. Use that list as an employer example, not as proof that every AI/ML fresher loop uses the same syllabus. Give priority to subjects explicitly present in your posting.

Do not abandon coding because a job title contains “AI.” A role may still include a software-development screen. Conversely, do not spend all of your preparation on algorithm puzzles when the posting is primarily about data work, model use, or application development. The correct balance follows the disclosed format and responsibilities.

3. Review machine-learning fundamentals to the depth the posting requires

There is no single complete fresher curriculum established by the employer guidance. Use the job description and your projects as the boundary, then make sure you can reason through the following general workflow.

Problem formulation and data

  • Define the prediction, ranking, generation, or decision problem precisely.
  • Identify the unit of observation, target variable, available features, and operational constraints.
  • Describe data sources, labeling choices, missing values, outliers, leakage risks, and class imbalance.
  • Explain how you separated training, validation, and test data and why that split reflects the way the system will be used.

Models, baselines, and evaluation

  • State a simple baseline and what it tells you before introducing a more complex model.
  • Explain why the selected model fits the data, latency, interpretability, and maintenance requirements.
  • Choose metrics that match the cost of errors. Be ready to discuss precision, recall, F1, thresholding, ranking metrics, calibration, or regression losses when relevant.
  • Recognize overfitting, underfitting, variance, bias, and distribution shift, and describe how you would detect them.
  • Discuss error analysis rather than reporting one headline score.

Testing and delivery

For an engineering-oriented role, explain how you would test preprocessing, feature computation, model behavior, and the surrounding application. Mention reproducibility, versioned data or models, monitoring, rollback, and performance constraints when they are relevant to the posting. Microsoft’s AI-engineer profile explicitly includes creating, developing, and testing models, so a candidate should be able to connect model quality with an implementable system.

Specialize where the job specializes

Go deeper in the named area instead of trying to memorize every AI topic. A deep-learning role may require architecture, optimization, regularization, and training diagnostics. An NLP role may require representation, sequence handling, retrieval, or evaluation of generated text. A vision role may require image preprocessing, convolutional models, augmentation, and detection or segmentation metrics. A generative-AI role may require discussion of data, evaluation, prompting, retrieval, safety, and latency. These are practical preparation boundaries, not a universal employer checklist.

Use authoritative learning material strategically

OpenAI’s interview guide recommends technical reading that includes Deep Learning and Spinning Up in Deep RL. Microsoft Learn provides a self-paced AI-engineer learning path. Treat both as gap-filling resources, not mandatory or sufficient preparation for every role. Read the chapter or module that addresses a weakness revealed by your posting, project, or practice session, then solve problems or explain the concept without looking at the text.

4. Turn every résumé project into interview evidence

A fresher may not have industry experience, but a class project, capstone, research project, reproducible notebook, or small application can demonstrate engineering judgment. Microsoft notes that some early-career candidates may be asked to code, share a portfolio or project, or provide another work sample. Only present work that is genuinely yours and that you can explain in detail.

Prepare a two-minute version

For each project, rehearse a concise explanation covering the problem, users or stakeholders, your contribution, the result, and the main limitation. Say whether it was an individual, class, research, or team project. In a team project, distinguish your work from your teammates’ work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the technical walkthrough

  1. Problem and constraints: What needed to be predicted or built, and what limitations affected the design?
  2. Data: Where did it come from, how was it labeled or cleaned, and what risks did you identify?
  3. Baseline and choices: What simple approach did you try first, and why did you select the final model or architecture?
  4. Implementation: Which components did you personally write or configure?
  5. Evaluation: Which metrics, splits, and test cases did you use? What did they reveal?
  6. Failures and limitations: Where did the system perform poorly, and how do you know?
  7. Next step: What would you change with more time, better data, or a different constraint?

Expect follow-up questions such as why you chose one metric over another, how leakage could occur, what would happen in production, or how you would reproduce the result. If you cannot justify a detail, say so plainly and explain what you would investigate.

5. Rehearse behavioral answers and technical communication

Technical ability is only part of the assessment. Microsoft advises candidates to prepare for behavioral as well as functional and technical questions. OpenAI says it evaluates communication and collaboration and values openness to feedback.

Build a small story bank

Prepare true examples about learning a difficult concept, resolving a disagreement, receiving critical feedback, correcting a mistake, collaborating under a constraint, and taking ownership. Organize each story with the STAR(R) pattern: situation, task, action, result, and reflection. The reflection explains what you learned or would do differently.

Show your reasoning during technical work

Microsoft’s interview guidance says, “We want to see not only what you know, but also how you think.” OpenAI similarly says, “We want to understand how you think.” In practice:

  1. Clarify ambiguous requirements before coding or modeling.
  2. State assumptions and ask whether they are reasonable.
  3. Compare at least two plausible approaches when trade-offs matter.
  4. Explain complexity, accuracy, latency, maintainability, or risk in terms the role cares about.
  5. Use examples and edge cases to test your own reasoning.
  6. Accept a hint, update your approach, and explain what changed.

Clear narration is not a substitute for a correct solution, but silence makes it difficult for an interviewer to evaluate partial progress, judgment, or learning ability.

6. Practice in the format you are likely to face

Run practice sessions under the same constraints stated by the recruiter. If the process uses a shared editor, practice there. If it includes a take-home, rehearse writing a short README that explains setup, assumptions, tests, and limitations. If a portfolio review is likely, practice screen-sharing the project and navigating directly to the relevant code, data, and results.

Use mock interviews with follow-ups

Ask a peer to interrupt with realistic questions: “Why this metric?”, “What if the data distribution changes?”, “How would you test that?”, or “What did you personally implement?” Narrate your reasoning rather than waiting until the end to explain it.

Keep a review log

After every session, record exactly three items:

  • One knowledge gap to study.
  • One communication habit to improve.
  • One coding or modeling mistake to prevent next time.

Then revisit those items in a later session. The cited employer guidance supports coding practice, work samples, and explaining your approach, but it does not establish a universal number of practice hours or guarantee an outcome.

7. Understand possible interview formats without assuming one universal loop

Official employer pages illustrate the range of processes rather than a common standard.

8. Choose preparation resources by fit, not popularity

When deciding among a book, course, coding platform, mock interview, or employer guide, evaluate it against the role you are pursuing.

Decision axis Questions to ask
Role match Does it target ML engineering, applied AI, data science, research, or general software engineering?
Skill coverage Does it address coding, computer-science fundamentals, ML theory, projects, application design, and behavioral communication in the proportions you need?
Practice depth Does it require you to solve and explain problems, or only provide passive summaries?
Specificity and currency Does it reflect the employer’s disclosed process and the current posting?
Cost and access Is there a useful free option, and does a paid resource add practice or feedback you actually lack?

Deep Learning Interviews by Shlomo Kashani and Amir Ivry is identified in its arXiv record as a second edition with solved questions across AI topics, designed for interview and exam rehearsal and for job seekers. Verify the edition, format, availability, and price from the current retailer before buying; the record does not establish those commercial details.

9. Common preparation mistakes and their fixes

Studying a generic question list only

Why it fails: employers and teams use different formats and priorities.

Fix: map the posting and recruiter instructions first, then use generic material only to fill identified gaps.

Fix: explain each concept through a project or a small example, including its failure modes.

Hiding behind autocomplete or notebooks

Why it fails: the assessment may restrict tools, and the interviewer needs to see your independent reasoning.

Fix: practice outside an IDE and confirm the actual tool policy before interview day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Claiming ownership of team work

Why it fails: follow-up questions expose which decisions and code you understand.

Fix: label your contribution accurately and prepare the technical details you personally handled.

Reporting one score without discussing limits

Why it fails: a single metric can conceal leakage, imbalance, poor calibration, or failure on important subgroups.

Fix: show the evaluation design, error analysis, and what you would improve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring behavior until the final day

Why it fails: communication, collaboration, and response to feedback are assessed alongside technical work.

Fix: rehearse a small set of truthful stories and practice concise explanations during coding sessions.

10. Interview-day checklist

  • Re-read the job description and your résumé, especially every project and technology listed.
  • Confirm the start time, meeting link, interview stages, permitted language, environment, and tool policy.
  • Have a quiet setup, reliable connection, paper or an approved editor for notes, and any requested work sample ready.
  • For a coding problem, clarify requirements before implementing and test edge cases aloud.
  • For an ML question, define the task, data, split, baseline, metric, and failure analysis before naming a model.
  • For a behavioral question, describe your own actions and finish with the result and lesson.
  • Ask clarifying questions when requirements are ambiguous; curiosity is part of demonstrating how you think.

Preparation is strongest when every activity answers a requirement of the specific role: code under realistic constraints, explain the models and projects on your résumé, practice the communication behaviors the employer names, and verify the assessment rules with the recruiter. That approach is more reliable than treating “AI/ML fresher interview” as one fixed exam.
