A portable battery backup can keep selected devices running during an outage, but it is not a whole-home generator. The reliable approach is to list essential loads, determine which must run together, match the station’s continuous and startup output to those loads, and match its stored energy to the number of hours you need. Prepare lighting, communications, medical contingencies, food-safety equipment, and charging options separately.

This U.S.-oriented guide follows Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Ready.gov/FEMA, and manufacturer guidance. Exact limits depend on the battery station and the devices connected to it.

What a portable battery backup can—and cannot—do

A portable power station stores electricity in a battery and delivers it through outlets or USB and DC ports. During a blackout, it can power a carefully selected group of loads such as phones, networking equipment, lights, small medical devices, and refrigeration for limited periods. It cannot automatically supply every circuit in a house unless it is part of a properly installed transfer system, and most portable units are not designed to run large electric heating, central air-conditioning, or an entire electric range.

CDC preparedness guidance says to have backup sources for personal devices, appliances, and medical equipment. Ready.gov advises households to decide what to plug in first because available power may not cover everything at once. Treat the station as one part of an emergency plan, not as a substitute for evacuation plans, utility alerts, or fuel-free lighting.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Office of Readiness and Response, Power Sources guidance, reviewed April 18, 2024

The CDC page states that people experience about four hours of power loss per year on average. That is a historical average, not a prediction for your next outage; a major disaster can last much longer. The same guidance warns that an extended outage can be life-threatening for people dependent on home-use medical devices.

Make a device inventory

Walk through the home and record the information on each device label or in its manual. Include:

  • Medical equipment, mobility or accessibility equipment, and any device whose interruption creates immediate risk.
  • Phone chargers, internet equipment, radios, and other communication tools.
  • Required lighting, including lights needed for safe movement.
  • Refrigerator and freezer loads.
  • Small fans, pumps, or other equipment needed for care or safety.

For every item, note its rated watts or amps, the connector it needs, and whether it has a motor or compressor. Ask how many hours it must operate and which items need power at the same time. A refrigerator, for example, cycles rather than drawing its maximum rating continuously, while a phone charger may draw very little but still be a high priority.

Separate simultaneous and sequential loads

Create two groups. “Must run together” contains combinations such as a medical device and its monitoring equipment. “Can run in turns” contains items such as phones, lights, and a laptop. Sequential use lets one station support more needs without exceeding its output rating. Write down a switching order so nobody has to make calculations during a stressful outage.

Plan for medical equipment first

For powered medical equipment, ask the equipment manufacturer and your clinician, home-care supplier, or utility medical-equipment program about approved battery backup, expected runtime, and alternatives. CDC specifically recommends a personal emergency power plan and checking battery or generator compatibility in the device manual or with the manufacturer. Keep prescriptions, care instructions, and emergency contacts accessible in paper form as well as on a powered device.

Choose a station by output, energy, and connections

Portable stations have two different limits: power (watts) describes what they can deliver at one moment, while stored energy (watt-hours, or Wh) describes how much energy is available over time. You need both figures to fit your load plan.

Check continuous and startup power

Add the running wattage of all devices that will operate simultaneously. The total must remain below the station’s continuous AC output, with margin for measurement uncertainty. Motors and compressors can draw a brief startup surge several times higher than their running draw. Jackery’s pass-through guidance specifically calls out startup power and says rated and startup demand must stay within the applicable AC-output limits. Refrigerators, air conditioners, heaters, and air pumps are common examples requiring this check.

If a manual gives a separate surge or peak rating, compare your highest combined startup demand with that rating. Do not assume a station’s “peak” number can be sustained or that every model handles surges in the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Estimate required stored energy

For a simple estimate, multiply a device’s watts by the hours you expect it to run, then add the estimates for all devices. For example, a 40-watt load used for five hours represents about 200 Wh before conversion losses. Real runtime is lower or higher depending on the station’s inverter efficiency, DC-versus-AC path, battery condition, temperature, and the device’s operating pattern. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal runtime formula or guarantee, so leave headroom rather than sizing exactly to an advertised figure.

Compare the specifications that affect your plan

Specification Why it matters What to verify in the exact manual
Stored capacity (Wh) Determines how long loads can run. Usable energy, expansion batteries, and conditions behind any runtime claims.
Continuous AC output (W) Sets the sustained combined load. Whether the rating applies to all AC outlets together.
Startup or surge capability Allows brief motor and compressor starts. Peak value, duration, and whether pass-through operation changes the limit.
Ports and connectors Determines what can connect without extra adapters or inverter losses. AC, USB, DC, automotive-style outlets, connector polarity, and per-port limits.
Charging inputs Controls how you can refill the battery. AC input, vehicle input, solar input, voltage, current, and maximum wattage.
Transfer time Determines whether a device stays powered when utility electricity fails. The exact UPS or emergency-power specification and supported devices.
Weight and handling Affects whether you can move and position it safely. Weight, handles, ventilation requirements, and storage temperature.

Understand pass-through and UPS behavior

A station may charge while supplying connected loads, but that does not automatically make it an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The EcoFlow DELTA 2 manual, for example, specifies a 30-millisecond transfer time and says the unit is not a 0-millisecond UPS. That interruption may reboot a computer, network appliance, or medical device. Check the exact model’s transfer-time statement and the equipment manufacturer’s tolerance before relying on it for continuous operation.

Prepare before severe weather or a planned outage

  1. Write the load plan. Record each priority device, running watts, possible startup demand, required hours, connector, and whether it runs simultaneously with another load.
  2. Verify medical compatibility. Obtain written or clearly documented guidance from the device manufacturer and care team. Identify a backup location, such as a staffed shelter or another facility, if home power cannot safely support the equipment.
  3. Charge the station early. CDC advises preparing power sources in advance. Before a forecast storm, charge to the level recommended by the current manual and keep the unit accessible, dry, and at a safe operating temperature.
  4. Inspect the kit. Check the station, AC cord, DC cables, adapters, fuses, and any extension equipment for damage. Confirm that every connector fits and that cable ratings meet the manual.
  5. Test with real loads. While utility power is available, connect the intended devices one at a time and then in the planned combinations. Observe startup behavior, output readings, alarms, and estimated runtime. A test is a compatibility check, not a guarantee for every future condition.
  6. Prepare independent supplies. Keep flashlights or lanterns, spare batteries, power banks, charging adapters, a battery-powered or hand-crank NOAA weather radio, battery-backed carbon-monoxide and smoke alarms, and refrigerator/freezer thermometers. Store local emergency contacts and critical prescriptions where they remain available without internet access.
  7. Review local plans. Sign up for utility alerts, identify cooling or warming centers, and learn how to request assistance for medically vulnerable household members.

Use the station safely during an outage

  1. Disconnect nonessential loads. Start with the written priority list. Connect only devices within the station’s AC and DC ratings, and account for startup demand before starting a motor or compressor.
  2. Keep airflow and surroundings safe. Follow the manual’s clearance, temperature, moisture, and indoor-use instructions. Do not cover vents or place the unit where spilled water can reach it.
  3. Watch the display. Monitor input, output, battery percentage, overload warnings, and temperature alerts. If an overload alarm appears, turn off the highest-demand device before reconnecting anything.
  4. Use lights instead of flames. CDC recommends battery-powered lights rather than candles where possible. Keep a flashlight beside the bed and near the main exit.
  5. Never create a carbon-monoxide hazard. A battery station does not make fuel-burning equipment safe indoors. Never run a gasoline, propane, or other combustion generator, grill, camp stove, or engine in a home, garage, basement, tent, or near doors, windows, or vents. Use working carbon-monoxide alarms with battery backup.
  6. Protect refrigerated food. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. CDC guidance says an unopened refrigerator can keep food safe for up to four hours; a full freezer for up to 48 hours, or about 24 hours if half-full. Use appliance thermometers and follow current CDC food-discard guidance if safe temperatures are exceeded.
  7. Escalate medical risk. If essential medical power is unavailable or the station is failing, contact local emergency services, the utility’s medical-equipment program, or a staffed shelter as appropriate. Do not wait for the battery to reach zero when a person’s safety depends on the device.

Solar and vehicle recharging: optional, model-specific choices

Solar panels can extend an outage plan, but they are not interchangeable accessories. Confirm that the station accepts solar input, then match the panel’s voltage, current, connector, and cable to the station’s manual. The EcoFlow E980 manual specifies a 500-watt maximum solar input and includes a voltage check for that model; those limits must not be applied to another station. Cloud cover, panel angle, shade, and daylight hours also reduce charging power.

Vehicle charging can be useful when driving is safe and fuel is available. Verify the station’s vehicle-input voltage and current limits, use the supplied cable or an approved replacement, and never leave a vehicle running in an enclosed space. If the outage affects roads or fuel supplies, treat vehicle charging as an option rather than the only recovery plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the power returns

  1. Turn off and unplug nonessential loads before reconnecting utility power.
  2. Inspect the station, cables, and adapters for heat damage, swelling, unusual odor, or moisture. Stop using damaged equipment and follow the manufacturer’s service instructions.
  3. Recharge only through supported AC, vehicle, or solar inputs and within the stated voltage, current, and wattage limits.
  4. Restore the emergency kit: recharge power banks, replace used batteries, reset alarms if required, and return flashlights and radios to their storage locations.
  5. Check food and medications. Follow CDC guidance for refrigerated medicines and discard food that has exceeded safe temperatures rather than relying on smell or appearance.
  6. Record what failed, what ran out first, and any device that rebooted. Update the load plan and obtain a larger-capacity, higher-output, or medically approved solution only if the revised need justifies it.

Troubleshoot common planning mistakes

The station shuts down when a refrigerator starts

The compressor’s startup demand may exceed the station’s surge capability, or another load may already be using the available peak output. Unplug nonessential devices, check the refrigerator’s starting requirement and the station’s surge specification, and do not repeatedly reset an overload without confirming compatibility.

Runtime is much shorter than expected

Recalculate simultaneous loads, include inverter and conversion losses, and check whether a heater, pump, compressor, or aging battery is drawing more energy than assumed. Use lower-power DC or USB outputs where the device manufacturer permits, and cycle nonessential loads rather than leaving them on continuously.

A computer or medical device reboots during an outage

The station’s transfer time may be too long for that equipment. Confirm the exact transfer-time and UPS wording in the station manual and ask the equipment manufacturer about acceptable interruption. A model described as pass-through is not necessarily a zero-interruption UPS.

The station will not solar-charge

Check panel polarity, connector type, open-circuit voltage, operating current, cable condition, sunlight, and the station’s maximum solar-input wattage. Never exceed the manual’s voltage or current limits; a panel that fits physically may still be electrically incompatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The household still lacks safe lighting or communication

Keep independent flashlights, spare batteries, power banks, adapters, and a NOAA radio. These supplies remain usable if the station is empty, overloaded, damaged, or reserved for medical equipment.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose a smaller station when your list is limited to phones, lights, networking equipment, and short-duration low-wattage loads.
  • Choose more stored energy when priority devices must run for many hours or overnight, even if their wattage is modest.
  • Choose higher output and surge capability when your plan includes compressors, pumps, refrigerators, or other motor-driven loads.
  • Require documented UPS behavior when a device cannot tolerate a power interruption; verify the transfer time with the equipment manufacturer.
  • Use a medically approved alternative when a person’s life or treatment depends on uninterrupted power and compatibility has not been established.
  • Add solar only after electrical compatibility is confirmed; panel wattage alone does not prove that a station can accept it.

Keep the plan device-specific: compare every station’s current manual with every critical appliance or medical device, leave capacity for uncertainty, and maintain non-battery emergency supplies for the needs a portable station cannot safely cover.
