Claude can help you decide which moments in your footage matter, suggest an edit order, identify continuity problems, and turn an editorial brief into a cut list. It is most reliable when you give it representative still frames, consistent labels, project context, and a tightly defined output format. Treat Claude as an analysis and planning assistant: the guidance covered here explains frame-based video analysis, not a Claude-native timeline editor or finished-video renderer.

What Claude can—and cannot—do with video footage

Anthropic’s prompting guidance explains that video can be analyzed by breaking it into frames. In practice, that means preparing still images and notes that represent the footage, then asking Claude to reason about what is visible. Claude can compare shots, find useful visual moments, propose an order, flag apparent continuity issues, and draft an edit plan.

The same guidance does not establish that Claude edits a video timeline, applies transitions in a non-linear editor, or renders a finished video file. Unless a separate, current Anthropic document confirms a specific feature, describe the workflow as analysis and planning. You still need a video editor to trim clips, synchronize sound, add graphics, export, and make the final creative decisions.

Use Claude for decisions, not invisible assumptions

A frame only shows what is visible in that still. Claude cannot reliably recover an action, line of dialogue, camera movement, or off-screen event that is absent from the supplied material. If a decision depends on exact timing, provide timestamps or a time-coded shot list. If it depends on sound, provide a transcript, audio notes, or a description of the relevant audio; do not imply that a silent still proves what was said.

Start with the intended result

Before selecting frames, write a short brief that defines what the finished video should accomplish. This prevents Claude from optimizing for attractive images when your real goal is comprehension, proof, emotion, or a clear call to action.

Define the audience and viewer response

State who will watch and what they should understand or feel by the end. “For first-time customers, make the setup process feel simple” gives Claude a useful editorial target. “Make it good” does not. Mention whether the viewer is a specialist, a general audience, an internal team, or a child, because that changes the amount of explanation and the tolerance for fast cuts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Specify the destination and constraints

Include the intended platform or delivery context, aspect ratio, approximate duration, tone, and any mandatory or prohibited content. If the duration is not known, say so rather than inventing a target. Note requirements such as captions, brand-safe language, a visible product demonstration, a talking-head opening, or a final call to action.

Describe the editorial priority

Tell Claude what to value when trade-offs occur. For example, ask it to prioritize intelligibility over visual variety, preserve chronological order, favor clean eyelines, or keep the speaker’s strongest explanation even if the shot is less polished. This is more useful than asking for a generic “best edit.”

Build a compact shot inventory before uploading anything

A shot inventory is a practical editorial aid, not an Anthropic-required format. It gives each clip or still a stable identity and records the information that a single image cannot convey.

Label every clip and frame consistently

Use labels that will remain unchanged throughout the conversation, such as A01, A02, and B-roll-03. If you create several stills from one clip, extend the label with a time marker, for example A01-00m12s. Use the same labels in filenames, the prompt, and Claude’s requested output. Avoid labels such as “good shot” that encode your conclusion before analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the information Claude needs

  • Source: clip or frame label and, when known, start and end time.
  • Visible action: what the subject is doing in the supplied image or clip note.
  • Subject and location: who or what is present and where the shot occurs.
  • Useful moment: the demonstration, reaction, detail, or transition the shot may support.
  • Continuity notes: changes in wardrobe, hand position, screen state, eyeline, lighting, or background.
  • Quality notes: blur, focus problems, occlusion, unwanted objects, exposure issues, or a partially blocked view.
  • Audio or dialogue notes: only when supplied separately, with timestamps if exact placement matters.

Keep descriptions factual. “Person raises a blue mug beside the window” is safer than “Person celebrates success” unless the celebration is unmistakable and relevant. Ask Claude to distinguish visible evidence from an interpretation.

Select representative frames instead of sending an arbitrary image dump

Choose stills that cover the decisions you want Claude to make. Include frames showing important actions, visual details, transitions, changes in continuity, and any shot you are unsure about. A sequence may need more than one still when the useful information develops over time.

What to include

  • An establishing view when location or geography matters.
  • The clearest view of the key action or product detail.
  • Beginning, middle, and end states of a transformation or demonstration.
  • Potential cut points, reaction shots, and alternative angles.
  • Frames where continuity may break, such as a changed prop position or screen state.
  • Problem frames that you want Claude to reject or qualify.

What not to claim

There is no universal frame-sampling interval or required number of frames established by the cited Anthropic guidance. Do not assume that one frame every fixed number of seconds is sufficient for every scene. Fast movement, a brief facial reaction, or a screen change may require closer coverage, while a static interview may need fewer representative stills. Choose coverage based on the editorial decision, then state how the frames were selected.

Preserve timing information

If Claude must produce an exact cut list, include timecodes in the shot inventory or filename. A still without a timestamp can support a visual recommendation but cannot, by itself, establish where a cut belongs in the original media. Ask Claude to mark missing timing as an open question rather than guessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare image files that Claude can inspect

Anthropic’s Claude.ai image guidance lists JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP as supported image formats. It lists a 30 MB upload limit per image and a maximum image size of 8000 by 8000 pixels, and recommends avoiding small or low-resolution images.

Item Published guidance How to apply it to footage preparation
Supported image formats JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP Export representative stills in one of these formats and keep labels consistent.
Maximum file size 30 MB per image Compress oversized stills without reducing important visual detail; this is an image-upload limit, not a stated video-file limit.
Maximum dimensions 8000 × 8000 pixels Keep exports within the stated dimensions and preserve readable details such as text on a screen.
Quality advice Avoid small or low-resolution images Use a resolution that lets Claude distinguish faces, objects, screen content, and continuity details.

These figures describe image uploads. They do not establish a maximum video duration, a supported direct-video upload workflow, or a frame-extraction cadence. Interfaces, model capabilities, and limits can change, so check Anthropic’s current Claude.ai guidance before relying on an exact limit.

Write a structured prompt Claude can follow

Separate instructions, project context, footage descriptions, and output requirements. Anthropic describes XML tags as useful for reducing ambiguity in complex prompts. The following scaffold is a writer-created starting point based on that advice, not an official Anthropic template.

<context>
Project goal: [what the finished video should accomplish]
Audience: [who will watch]
Style and constraints: [tone, aspect ratio, platform, length, required or prohibited content]
Editorial priority: [what to favor when choices conflict]
</context>

<footage>
Clip/frame labels and short descriptions:
[Label each supplied clip or still; include timestamps where known]
</footage>

<task>
Review the supplied frames and notes. Identify the strongest moments, suggest an edit order, and flag continuity or clarity problems. Do not infer events that are not visible in the supplied material. Separate observations from recommendations and list any missing information needed for exact timing.
</task>

<output_format>
Return a table with: order, clip/frame label, purpose, suggested action, evidence, and open question.
</output_format>

Make the task operational

Replace broad requests with actions Claude can complete. Useful instructions include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “Rank the supplied moments for a 45-second explainer, prioritizing clarity.”
  • “Suggest an order that introduces the problem before the solution.”
  • “Flag any continuity change that could be visible to a viewer.”
  • “Identify two alternatives for the opening and explain the trade-off.”
  • “Do not infer dialogue, actions, or objects that are not visible or described.”

Tell Claude how to handle uncertainty. Require labels such as “not visible,” “timing not supplied,” or “needs editor review” instead of allowing confident guesses.

Constrain the answer format

Output constraints make the response easier to use in an editing application. Request a table with a fixed set of columns, a numbered shortlist, or a cut-list format. If you need a time-coded result, supply timecodes and ask Claude to preserve them exactly. If the source material lacks timecodes, request a placeholder-free list of labels and an explicit open-question column rather than fabricated timestamps.

Use a repeatable preparation workflow

  1. Write the result brief. State the audience, goal, destination, tone, duration target if known, aspect ratio, and editorial priorities.
  2. Inventory the footage. Label clips and frames consistently, record visible action and location, and note continuity, quality, and audio information.
  3. Choose coverage. Select stills that represent key actions, transitions, details, reactions, alternative angles, and suspected problems. Do not imply that a fixed interval or frame count is required.
  4. Export usable stills. Use JPEG, PNG, GIF, or WebP; keep each image within the stated 30 MB and 8000 × 8000 image limits; avoid unreadably small exports.
  5. Upload with context. Put the shot inventory in the prompt or an attached text document, and make sure every image label matches the inventory.
  6. Request a decision-oriented output. Ask for strongest moments, an order, continuity flags, and open questions in a defined table or list.
  7. Check the evidence. Compare every recommendation with the supplied frame and notes. Reject conclusions based on details Claude could not see.
  8. Iterate narrowly. Follow up on one sequence, transition, or editorial choice at a time instead of repeatedly asking for a complete rewrite.
  9. Apply the plan in your editor. Use Claude’s labels and rationale as an edit plan, then perform the actual trimming, sound work, graphics, and export in a dedicated video application.

Ask focused follow-up questions

Iteration works best when each follow-up resolves one decision. If the first answer is too broad, narrow the scope without discarding the evidence already supplied.

For an opening decision

Ask: “Compare A01-00m03s and B02-00m11s as the opening. Which communicates the problem faster for a general audience? Cite only visible evidence and list one risk for each choice.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For continuity

Ask: “Review A03, A04, and A05 for prop position, eyeline, wardrobe, and background changes. Return only confirmed changes and explain whether each could be hidden by a cutaway.”

For a cut list

Ask: “Using the supplied timecodes, create a 60-second order. Keep the demonstration intact, mark any timing conflict, and do not invent durations.”

For missing information

Ask Claude to list the smallest set of additional frames, timestamps, or notes needed to make the decision. This is more efficient than uploading every available frame immediately.

Use Claude Projects for recurring productions

Claude Projects can hold uploaded knowledge and project instructions for repeated work, subject to plan availability. A project can contain a standing brief—audience, terminology, visual priorities, prohibited claims, and output conventions—so each new footage review starts with the same context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What belongs in project instructions

  • The recurring audience and distribution channels.
  • Preferred tone, pacing principles, and accessibility requirements.
  • Definitions for internal labels and recurring on-screen elements.
  • A rule to separate visible observations from assumptions.
  • The required cut-list columns and naming convention.

What should remain in each session

Keep sequence-specific material—frame uploads, timecodes, scene notes, and the current editorial question—in the individual conversation. Update project instructions when the standard changes, rather than burying a new rule in a single one-off prompt. Because plan availability and product interfaces can change, verify the current Project requirements in Claude before designing a team workflow around them.

Choose a preparation method based on the decision you need to make

There is no single best way to prepare every video. The options below are editorial approaches, not measured performance results.

Preparation approach Best for Strength Trade-off
Curated key frames with a shot inventory Choosing hero moments, openings, and demonstrations High clarity per uploaded image and easy label tracking Can miss a brief action if coverage is too sparse
Several frames around a transition Checking continuity, gestures, screen states, or object movement Shows how a visual state changes Requires more labeling and upload organization
Scene-grouped contact sheets or batches Comparing many possible angles in one sequence Efficient visual overview when individual files are numerous Small thumbnails may hide fine detail; provide separate full-resolution stills for critical decisions
Frames plus transcript or audio notes Dialogue-led edits and exact message placement Connects visible action with spoken content Claude still needs reliable timecodes to make exact timing recommendations

Whichever method you choose, keep labels unambiguous and tell Claude what the material represents. A compact, well-described set is more useful than an unexplained archive.

Common failure modes and fixes

Claude recommends shots you did not intend

Cause: The prompt asks for the “best” footage without defining the audience or priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: State the viewer, goal, platform, duration, and what to favor. Ask for evidence beside each recommendation.

The answer sounds certain about an unseen event

Cause: A still does not show the beginning or end of an action, but the prompt treats it as complete evidence.

Fix: Instruct Claude not to infer unseen events and require an uncertainty label. Supply additional frames only where the decision depends on motion or sequence.

Continuity problems are missed

Cause: Frames are labeled inconsistently or only one state of a changing prop, screen, or wardrobe is shown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Group adjacent frames, record the source time, and explicitly ask for comparisons of eyeline, position, lighting, background, and screen state.

The proposed cut list has unusable timestamps

Cause: The source material contains no timecodes, or labels do not map to the original media.

Fix: Add start and end times to the inventory. Until then, request labels and sequence order only, with missing timing listed as an open question.

Important details are unreadable

Cause: The still is too small, compressed, blurred, or exported at an awkward size.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Export a larger, sharper still within the stated image limits. Use a separate close-up for text, product details, or facial expressions instead of relying on a distant frame.

The prompt becomes difficult to maintain

Cause: Instructions, footage notes, and requested output are mixed together in one paragraph.

Fix: Use separate sections such as <context>, <footage>, <task>, and <output_format>. Keep the standing rules in a Claude Project when that feature is available on your plan.

An end-to-end prompt example

Project goal: Explain how a new customer completes the three-step setup.
Audience: First-time users with no technical background.
Platform and constraints: Landscape web video, approximately 60 seconds, captions required, calm and practical tone.
Editorial priority: Favor clear demonstrations over decorative cutaways; preserve chronological order.

<footage>
A01-00m02s — Wide view of the workstation; subject enters frame.
A02-00m08s — Close view of the setup screen with the first option selected.
A03-00m17s — Subject connects the cable; right hand and port are visible.
A04-00m24s — Screen confirms connection; timestamp supplied by the editor.
B01-00m31s — Subject looks toward camera and speaks; transcript note supplied separately.
B02-00m45s — Finished setup beside the device; background contains a visible cable.
Continuity note: A03 and A04 were recorded in one session; confirm whether the cable position changes.

<task>
Review the supplied frames and notes. Propose an order for a roughly 60-second explainer, identify the strongest opening, and flag continuity or clarity problems. Separate visible observations from recommendations. Do not infer dialogue or actions that are not shown or described. If an exact cut point cannot be established from the supplied timestamps, say so.
</task>

<output_format>
Return:
1. A recommended order with columns: order, clip/frame label, purpose, suggested action, evidence, and open question.
2. One alternative opening and its trade-off.
3. A continuity checklist limited to confirmed or clearly possible issues.
</output_format>

This prompt gives Claude a goal, audience, constraints, labeled evidence, a rule against unsupported inference, and a format that an editor can act on. It does not ask Claude to render the final video or pretend that still frames contain information they do not show.

Keep the handoff to your video editor explicit

When Claude’s plan is ready, transfer decisions rather than assumptions. Preserve the frame or clip labels, copy the proposed order into your editing notes, and verify each recommendation against the original media. Resolve open questions in the timeline: confirm the actual in and out points, listen to the audio, check captions, and review transitions at normal playback speed.

Use Claude’s output as a transparent rationale for editorial choices. If the plan changes during editing, update the shot inventory or notes so a later review reflects the current cut. This separation—Claude for frame-based analysis and planning, an editor for execution and rendering—keeps the workflow useful without overstating Claude’s established video capabilities.
