Cyclic voltammetry (CV) data becomes FAIR only when the complete information chain is managed: acquisition from a potentiostat, transfer, experiment and sample context, format conversion, metadata, analysis, and publication. A 2025 Chemical Science paper demonstrates that chain with open-source components, while also showing why local configuration and community standards still matter. The workflow is an adaptable example—not a universal instrument standard or a hardware comparison.

What FAIR CV data means in practice

FAIR means findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable. For CV, that objective reaches well beyond saving a current–potential trace. A reusable record must connect the trace to the experiment that produced it, preserve enough context to interpret the measurement, use formats that other software can read, and expose data and metadata through a publication or repository workflow.

The distinction matters because electroanalytical files often begin in proprietary or non-standard formats. Instrument software may store several files for one run, write them continuously or only after completion, and place them in a location that is not visible to the laboratory’s documentation system. CV experiments can also contain repeated measurements associated with one experiment, while electrodes, cells and instrument settings vary between laboratories. Simply copying a file to a shared drive does not resolve those problems.

Herrmann and colleagues’ peer-reviewed Chemical Science paper, published 5 February 2025, uses CV as a demanding worked example. It follows data from instrument acquisition through an electronic laboratory notebook (ELN), conversion and metadata harmonization, digital analysis and repository publication. The demonstration includes Chemotion ELN and related open-source components, but the authors do not present it as a validated performance comparison or as a community-wide standard. The seven-stage lifecycle

Each stage produces information needed by the next. Skipping a stage creates a gap that later users may not be able to reconstruct.

Stage What happens Useful output or check
1. Digital acquisition The potentiostat and its control software record the CV measurement. Original files are retained with their instrument-generated identifiers and timestamps.
2. Transfer A routine moves files from the instrument computer to remote storage and/or the ELN. The transfer path, trigger and failure state are known.
3. Association Files are linked to the correct experiment and sample record. A person can identify the sample, run and related measurements without guessing.
4. Conversion Proprietary or irregular files are converted to a readable, standardized representation. A converted data file is accompanied by its source file and conversion provenance.
5. Metadata Extracted metadata is checked, completed and mapped to consistent fields. Conditions such as electrode, scan settings and sample identity are explicit.
6. Digital analysis Data is viewed, edited or analyzed with software that can read the harmonized representation. Analysis steps and resulting files remain linked to the source data.
7. Publication Data and metadata are deposited in a repository or other citable service. Others can discover, access and interpret the record under stated conditions.

How to implement the workflow

1. Map the instrument’s actual output

Start with the potentiostat software rather than with the ELN. Document where completed and in-progress files are written, the file extensions and accompanying file groups, naming conventions, and whether the software appends data during an experiment or writes a complete file at the end. A watcher that reacts too early can transfer an incomplete CV; one that waits indefinitely can leave a completed run undocumented.

The paper’s transfer example uses ShuttleBuilder to watch or access files produced by instrument software, move them from the instrument computer to remote storage and then bring them into the ELN. The example explains the Gamry Framework and reports application to Metrohm and PalmSens potentiostats as well. Those examples show that the transfer layer can be adapted across vendors; they do not establish that every instrument or software release behaves the same way.

  • Record the instrument computer and software version in local documentation.
  • Define a stable inbound location that the transfer service can read without changing original files.
  • Decide how a completed run is detected: a completion event, a closed file, a companion status file or a controlled delay.
  • Keep an audit record for copied, rejected and retried files.
  • Restrict write access to the original-data location so an accidental edit cannot silently replace the acquisition.

2. Move data without losing provenance

A transfer is successful only when the destination record can be traced back to the original acquisition. Preserve the original file, its relative path or instrument identifier, and the transfer time. If a run contains several related files, move them as a logical group rather than treating one curve as the entire experiment.

Plan for interruptions. A network outage, locked file or partially written export should produce a visible error and a retry, not a plausible-looking but incomplete ELN entry. The local implementation must also decide how duplicate filenames are handled and how a second transfer attempt is recognized as a retry rather than a new experiment.

3. Associate the file with an experiment and sample

Before conversion, establish the relationship between a file and the laboratory record. The association should identify the experiment, sample or preparation, operator, date, and any replicate or sequence information needed to distinguish repeated measurements. CV files that belong to one experiment should be represented as related measurements, not as unrelated uploads.

Use controlled identifiers where possible. A sample ID that is typed differently in the instrument software, ELN and repository can prevent otherwise identical records from being joined. If a field is unknown at acquisition, mark it as missing and assign responsibility for completion; do not infer a value from a filename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Convert to a readable representation

The demonstrated workflow uses Chemotion converter software to convert instrument formats and match metadata. It describes JCAMP-DX output as a standardized representation that can be read by compatible tools. Conversion should be treated as a reproducible transformation, not as a replacement for the source: retain the original file, identify the converter and configuration used, and record warnings or fields that could not be mapped.

Inspect the converted file before analysis. Confirm that axes, units, point order, sign conventions and repeated segments still correspond to the acquisition. A successful file conversion message does not prove that the scientific meaning survived unchanged. For a format that cannot represent a vendor-specific field, preserve that field in an associated record or explain its absence in the metadata.

5. Complete and harmonize metadata

Metadata makes a curve interpretable. At minimum, design fields for the sample and preparation, solvent or electrolyte, electrode identities and roles, cell arrangement, instrument and software, potential limits, scan rate, number of cycles, current range or sensitivity where relevant, temperature when controlled, and any preprocessing or correction. The exact field set depends on the method and local requirements; the paper does not claim to settle a universal CV schema.

Metadata question Why it affects reuse
Which sample and preparation were measured? It links the curve to composition, concentration and treatment rather than only to a filename.
Which working, reference and counter electrodes were used? Electrode material, geometry and reference system affect potential and current interpretation.
What potential window, scan rate and cycle count were applied? These settings define the measurement and help distinguish repeated or comparable runs.
Which instrument, software and acquisition configuration produced the file? It explains vendor-specific fields and supports reproduction of the acquisition context.
What transformations were applied? Baseline corrections, filtering or other processing must not be mistaken for raw data.

6. View, edit and analyze digitally

The paper names ChemSpectra tools, including the ChemSpectra app and ReactSpectra editor, for viewing and editing. Use such tools to inspect the curve and its metadata, correct an identified labeling or formatting issue, and create analysis outputs while preserving the unmodified source and the converted version.

Record analysis as a linked derivative. A useful record states which input file was used, the operation performed, software and version, parameters, and the person or process that ran it. If a figure is exported, retain the underlying numerical result as well; an image alone is not a reusable measurement.

Do not treat harmonization as method validation. A standardized file can improve exchange between applications, but it cannot determine whether a chosen baseline, peak assignment or electrochemical interpretation is scientifically appropriate. Those decisions remain method-specific and should be documented by the research team.

7. Publish data and metadata

At publication time, deposit the data together with the metadata needed to interpret it and the provenance of conversion and analysis. The examples use the Chemotion repository, RADAR4Chem and Zenodo. The paper reports direct ELN integration for Chemotion and RADAR4Chem in the demonstrated workflow; repositories without direct integration can also be used. The suitable choice depends on submission requirements, data representation, access conditions and institutional policy.

Open-source components described in the paper

Component Role in the example Important qualification
ShuttleBuilder Transfers files from instrument-side storage toward remote storage and the ELN. Local paths, triggers and permissions still have to be configured.
Chemotion ELN Stores experiment records and associated metadata. The paper lists version 1.9.3 in one component description and version 1.8.0 or later for a repository path; these are source-era references, not current-release guidance.
Chemotion converter software Converts formats and maps metadata, including JCAMP-DX conversion. Conversion mappings should be inspected for fields that are missing or ambiguous.
ChemSpectra app and ReactSpectra editor View and edit spectral or electroanalytical representations. Use them as implementation examples and document the version deployed locally.
Chemotion repository, RADAR4Chem and Zenodo Publish data and metadata for access and reuse. Repository integration and submission rules differ; no single service is declared universally best.

What the workflow solves—and what it does not

It can bridge heterogeneous instrument data

The demonstration shows harmonization across the reported setup and says the approach can be adapted to devices from different vendors. That is valuable where a group combines instruments or collaborates across institutions: the ELN and conversion layer can provide a common representation while retaining the source files.

It does not create a universal measurement standard

CV procedures, analysis choices and documentation conventions still need broader agreement. In a 30 April 2025 report, Chemistry World attributes this warning to Nicole Jung: “some key prerequisites for the efficient use of Fair data are still missing – most importantly, the standardisation of measurement procedures, data analysis and documentation.” The article identifies Jung as a Karlsruhe Institute of Technology researcher. Read the report at Chemistry World.

That limitation is practical. Two laboratories can exchange files successfully and still disagree about electrode conditioning, correction methods or peak-selection rules. Harmonized syntax cannot resolve an undocumented scientific choice.

It does not choose a potentiostat

A potentiostat is the relevant physical instrument category because it produces the CV measurement. The paper names examples from Gamry, Metrohm and PalmSens, but it compares no models, reports no hardware ranking and makes no purchasing recommendation. Instrument selection must therefore be based on the experiment’s electrical, software, safety and integration requirements rather than on this workflow paper.

Adapting the pattern to another laboratory

  1. Inventory one representative experiment. Collect the raw files, related files, sample record and the analysis output exactly as they exist today.
  2. Draw the data path. Mark every computer, shared location, transfer service, ELN record, conversion step and repository hand-off.
  3. Choose a minimum metadata profile. Start with fields required to identify the sample, acquisition conditions, electrodes, instrument and processing; add method-specific fields after a pilot.
  4. Test incomplete and repeated runs. Include a file that is still being written, a failed transfer, duplicate names and several CV cycles belonging to one experiment.
  5. Compare source and converted outputs. Check units, point counts, ordering, cycle boundaries and metadata values, and record any field that cannot be represented.
  6. Give analysis a provenance record. Link every derived table or figure to its input and parameters, while keeping the raw acquisition immutable.
  7. Run a repository rehearsal. Submit a non-public test record and ask a colleague who did not create it to locate, open and interpret the files.
  8. Document local ownership. Assign responsibility for instrument configuration, transfer monitoring, metadata completion, software updates and repository access.

Common failure modes and fixes

  • The ELN contains a curve but no sample context: require a sample or experiment identifier before publication and provide a queue for missing metadata.
  • A watcher imports partial files: use a completion signal or stability check and retain a retry log.
  • One experiment becomes many disconnected records: model repeated measurements and related files under a shared experiment identifier.
  • Conversion drops a vendor-specific field: preserve the original file, flag the unmapped field and store its value in an extension or companion metadata record.
  • Analysts overwrite the source: make raw and converted files read-only and write analysis products to separate, linked records.
  • Repository users cannot reproduce a figure: publish the numerical data, processing description and software context, not only an image.
  • A local deployment is treated as a standard: label software versions and configuration as implementation details and agree on laboratory-level conventions explicitly.

How to judge whether a CV record is ready for reuse

  • Findable: a persistent record, meaningful title and searchable sample or experiment identifiers exist.
  • Accessible: the files can be obtained under clear permissions, and any restriction is explained.
  • Interoperable: the numerical data, units and metadata use documented, readable representations such as the converted JCAMP-DX output where appropriate.
  • Reusable: acquisition context, provenance, processing steps, responsible software and reuse terms are supplied.

A record can satisfy one dimension while failing another. For example, a public proprietary file may be accessible but not interoperable, while a well-converted curve without electrode or sample context may be interoperable but not reusable.

Why the example matters beyond CV

The authors describe the approach as adaptable to other measurements and experimental collections. Adaptation is a starting point, not a promise of automatic portability. Each technique needs its own conversion rules, metadata model, validation checks and infrastructure review. A laboratory should transfer the lifecycle pattern—acquire, move, associate, convert, describe, analyze and publish—while redesigning the scientific fields and quality checks for the new method.

Leah McEwan of Cornell University, quoted by Chemistry World, describes the open-source materials as an opportunity for institutions to explore how the technical approaches may be adapted to local infrastructure and data-management requirements. Tanja Junkers of Monash University similarly calls for “rethinking of the workflows we use today, and creation of generally accepted data standards.” These comments reinforce the practical boundary: a working implementation can demonstrate what is possible, but community agreement and local governance determine how broadly it can be reused.

Evidence and expectations

The paper and accompanying coverage do not report a quantified adoption rate, time saving, data-volume result or measured reproducibility gain. The defensible benefit is a concrete, inspectable route from instrument output to published data and metadata. Laboratories should measure their own transfer reliability, metadata completeness and user effort if they need operational evidence for a larger deployment.
