Start by identifying every affected VM size series, its retirement date and region, then select a supported destination, verify regional availability and quota, test the change outside production, and validate the workload after migration. Treat the published retirement date as a hard operational deadline: Microsoft says VMs left in a retired series are deallocated and stop working, billing and SLA coverage.
This guide explains how to turn a retirement notice—or another lifecycle change such as an end-of-life announcement or capacity restriction—into a controlled migration plan without assuming that one VM family, region or workload has the same requirements as another.
Understand what Azure lifecycle status means
Azure VM sizes move through four lifecycle stages. The status tells you how urgently to act and what Azure will allow, but it does not by itself identify the right replacement for your workload. Microsoft defines the stages in its VM lifecycle overview.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Stage | Meaning for administrators | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Current | The size is recommended for new deployments. | Use it when it satisfies your workload and regional requirements. |
| Extended | The size remains supported while customers evaluate newer options. | Keep an exit plan and assess a Current destination rather than treating the status as permanent. |
| End of Life | Retirement has been announced and a date has been set. | Complete modernization before that date. Microsoft’s wording is to “Prepare and complete modernization plans before the retirement date.” |
| Retired | The size can no longer be created, used for a resize, or run. | Do not wait for this stage; restore service from a previously tested destination or another supported design. |
A lifecycle stage is different from a temporary capacity problem. A family can be both subject to a retirement announcement and restricted for new capacity. Check the retirement notice and the capacity information separately; a capacity restriction is not proof that retirement has been announced.

Find out whether your VMs are affected
Do not begin by choosing a replacement size. First create an accurate inventory, because a notice normally applies to a size series and may have a specific region, edition or date. Capture enough information for the workload owner and change approver to make a decision.
Build an inventory that can be matched to a notice
- VM name and subscription, resource group and region.
- Exact VM size and size series, including any generation or specialty designation.
- Workload owner, application name, business criticality and recovery objective.
- Operating system, attached disks, network dependencies, load-balancer or gateway relationships and identity integrations.
- Installed extensions, agents, backup configuration and monitoring dependencies.
- Availability-zone or other placement requirements.
- Current utilization and the performance characteristics that the application actually needs.
- Maintenance restrictions, approved change windows and a documented rollback owner.
Compare that inventory with Microsoft’s live retirement overview and the family-specific announcement for the size in question. A notice can supersede an older page, and a regional exception can change the practical deadline. Record the URL, date checked and applicable retirement date in your change record.
Confirm the announcement, not just a search result
Use the lifecycle overview as the starting index, then open the announcement linked for your exact series. If the family has its own instructions, follow those alongside the general guidance. For example, Microsoft maintains a family-specific page for DCsv2-series retirement; the steps and constraints on a family page take precedence over assumptions based on another series.
Recheck the notice immediately before approving production work. Microsoft states that retirement plans and regional availability can change, so a date copied into a long-lived project plan should be verified again rather than treated as immutable.
Separate retirement from capacity restrictions
Capacity and retirement create different risks and require different responses:
| Question | Retirement announcement | Capacity restriction |
|---|---|---|
| What is changing? | Azure is ending support for a size series on a stated date. | Azure may limit placement or new capacity in a region or for a series. |
| What happens if you do nothing? | At the retirement deadline, remaining VMs are deallocated and stop working. | You may be unable to create, start or move a VM when capacity is unavailable, but the series is not necessarily retired. |
| Planning response | Plan and complete a supported migration before the deadline. | Check other regions, zones or supported sizes while preserving workload requirements. |
| Can both apply? | Yes. A series can have a retirement date and a separate capacity restriction. | Yes. Capacity information does not cancel or replace the retirement notice. |
Keep the two findings as separate entries in your risk register. This prevents a team from misreading a temporary allocation problem as the retirement date—or from assuming that a capacity workaround eliminates the need to modernize.

Choose a supported destination for the workload
Microsoft’s general lifecycle guidance points customers toward a Current or Extended destination, but it does not prescribe one universal replacement. The correct choice depends on performance, platform features, placement and commercial constraints.
Recommended Free Tools
Translate workload needs into selection criteria
Ask the workload owner to document measurable requirements before comparing sizes:
- CPU architecture, sustained CPU demand and burst behavior.
- Memory footprint, cache needs and whether memory bandwidth matters.
- Disk type, throughput, IOPS and latency requirements.
- Network throughput, accelerated networking or other networking features in use.
- GPU, confidential-computing, nested-virtualization or other specialized capabilities, if applicable.
- Operating-system and application support for the candidate family.
- Extension and agent compatibility, including backup, security and monitoring agents.
- Availability-zone behavior and any regional resiliency requirement.
- Licensing, reservation or other billing effects that your finance team must approve.
Do not infer equivalence from a similar name or a larger vCPU count. A destination can have more nominal capacity yet fail a network, disk, zone or extension requirement. Treat the candidate as acceptable only after it passes the workload’s functional and performance tests.
Check regional availability before committing
List the regions and zones in which the workload must run, then verify that the candidate size is offered there. Microsoft’s 2026 retirement announcement warns that suggested replacements may not be available in every region. If the preferred destination is absent, evaluate another supported family, another zone or a region change, and document the resulting latency, data-transfer, compliance and disaster-recovery effects.
Confirm subscription quota and allocation headroom
Check quota for the destination family in the target region before scheduling the migration. Include headroom for the production VM, a temporary parallel VM used for testing or cutover, and recovery capacity if your plan needs it. A technically suitable size that cannot be allocated under the subscription’s quota is not a usable plan. Request a quota increase early enough for approval and propagation, and record the request in the change ticket.

| Comparison axis | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Observed CPU, memory, disk and network results under representative load. | Model names and vCPU counts do not guarantee equal application behavior. |
| Required features | OS support, extensions, networking, specialized capabilities and zone support. | A missing feature can invalidate an otherwise attractive size. |
| Regional supply | Size availability in every required region and zone. | Availability can differ by location and can change over time. |
| Quota | Current regional quota plus migration and recovery headroom. | Insufficient quota can block a cutover even when capacity exists. |
| Billing impact | Any change in compute, disk, licensing, reservation or data-transfer costs. | A lifecycle change is also a budgeting and approval event. |
The official notices establish the need to check workload requirements, availability and quota; exact price and performance differences are workload-specific. Obtain current pricing and run your own representative tests rather than publishing a generic percentage or assuming a larger size is cheaper per unit of work.
Use a staged migration plan
Turn the inventory and destination decision into a sequence with an owner, evidence and a go/no-go point for each stage.
- Record the deadline. Enter the announced retirement date, affected series, regions and source URL in the change record. Note any regional exception or newer family notice.
- Classify the workload. Mark each VM as development, test, internal production or business-critical production. Assign an owner and define acceptable downtime, rollback time and data-loss tolerance.
- Shortlist destinations. Select Current or Extended candidates that satisfy the workload’s technical requirements and are offered in the required region and zone.
- Validate quota and dependencies. Confirm subscription quota, network placement, disk and identity dependencies, extension support, backup behavior and monitoring coverage.
- Design the test. Use a nonproduction VM or representative clone. Define success thresholds for application transactions, latency, throughput, error rate, startup, network paths and management agents.
- Run the test and capture evidence. Record the source and destination sizes, region, test data, workload level, observed metrics and defects. Do not approve production on an unmeasured “looks fine” result.
- Approve the production window. Select a period that allows validation and rollback before the retirement deadline. Notify application, network, security, database, service-desk and business owners.
- Prepare rollback. Preserve a recoverable source state, define the trigger for rollback, identify who can execute it and check that quota and capacity exist for the fallback path.
- Execute the family-specific change. Follow the instructions in the applicable retirement announcement. A resize, redeployment or migration can have different prerequisites and downtime; do not assume every VM family behaves the same way.
- Validate and close. Run the post-change checks below, update inventory and diagrams, and retain the evidence with the change record.
Test before touching production
Microsoft’s infrastructure lifecycle FAQ recommends validation in test environments before rollout. Your test should reproduce the conditions that can expose a lifecycle-related incompatibility, not merely prove that the operating system boots.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFunctional checks
- Start the VM and confirm the operating system, application services and scheduled jobs come up normally.
- Exercise the principal user or machine transactions, including authentication, database access, storage access and outbound integrations.
- Verify that backup, security, monitoring, logging and automation extensions report healthy status.
- Confirm DNS, private endpoints, routing, firewall rules, load-balancer membership and required service tags still work.
Performance checks
- Replay representative peak and steady-state load, not only an idle health check.
- Compare CPU, memory, disk latency and throughput, network throughput, queue depth and application latency with the source baseline.
- Check startup and recovery time if the workload relies on autoscaling, failover or scheduled shutdown and start.
- Investigate throttling, driver warnings, extension failures or changed telemetry before calling the test successful.
Resiliency and placement checks
Retirement guidance specifically calls out validating availability-zone support. Confirm the VM can be placed in the intended zone, that dependent resources remain reachable, and that your backup or disaster-recovery procedure still restores to a supported size in the target region. If the destination changes zone or region, test the complete failover path rather than only the primary VM.
Schedule and execute the production change
Use the family-specific Microsoft instructions for the actual operation. The safe sequence is to confirm the final destination and quota, capture a current recovery point, quiesce or drain the application when its design requires it, perform the approved resize or migration, and monitor the operation to completion.
Do not promise a universal downtime interval or prerequisite list. Some changes can be performed differently depending on the VM family, operating system, disk arrangement, region and migration method. The applicable announcement and size documentation determine whether a stop, deallocation, redeployment or other step is required.

Keep the change window long enough for post-change tests and rollback. If allocation fails, stop and diagnose quota, regional availability, zone capacity and dependency errors; do not repeatedly retry an unreviewed production change while the deadline approaches. Escalate quota or capacity issues early, and move to the next tested candidate only through the approved change process.
Validate the VM after migration or resize
Validation is a separate stage, not a quick “VM is running” check. Microsoft’s retirement guidance identifies performance, networking, extensions and availability-zone support as areas to verify.
Application and performance
- Confirm the application serves a real transaction and that error rates, latency and throughput meet the pre-change thresholds.
- Compare resource utilization with the baseline over a representative observation period. Look for sustained pressure, unexpected idle capacity or changed throttling.
- Check scheduled jobs, queues, workers and integrations that may not run during a short smoke test.
Networking and identity
- Test inbound and outbound paths, name resolution, private connectivity, load-balancer probes and firewall policy.
- Verify managed identities, certificates, secrets retrieval and access to storage, databases and platform services.
- Confirm monitoring and alert rules still receive the expected telemetry and that the VM is in the intended network and zone.
Extensions and operations
- Review every installed extension and agent for a healthy status and current configuration.
- Run a backup or recovery verification appropriate to the workload, and check that automation targets the new size or resource identity where relevant.
- Update the CMDB or inventory, architecture diagrams, runbooks, alert routing, cost allocation and owner records.
Keep the before-and-after measurements and sign-off with the change record. Evidence makes it possible to distinguish a migration defect from a later application or capacity issue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens after the retirement date?
Microsoft states that VMs remaining in a retired series are deallocated. They stop working, stop incurring charges, and lose their SLA and support. They also cannot be created or resized into after retirement. This is why the date belongs in an operational calendar, not only in an architecture backlog. See the official lifecycle overview for the current policy wording.
Deallocation is not a migration plan. It interrupts the workload and can leave dependent services unavailable until you move to a supported design. If a team discovers an affected VM late, treat recovery as an incident: identify the last tested destination, confirm quota and regional availability, restore from an appropriate recovery point if necessary, and involve the workload owner before changing data or network dependencies.

The lifecycle overview gives Dv3, Dsv3, Ev3 and Esv3 as an example of End of Life series with a November 15, 2029 retirement date; it says capacity-growth restrictions for those examples began in July 2026. Those dates illustrate why you should record both lifecycle and capacity findings, then recheck them before publication of a change plan.
Troubleshoot common planning failures
The destination size is not available in the region
Verify the candidate in every required zone, then check the retirement notice for other suggested families. If none meets the requirement, evaluate a supported region change or redesign with the application owner. Document latency, compliance, data-transfer and disaster-recovery consequences before approval.
Quota is too low
Calculate the peak quota needed for parallel test, production and rollback resources. Submit a quota increase request and wait for confirmation before the change window. If approval is not timely, use another already-tested destination rather than relying on an unverified emergency resize.
The VM starts but the application is slower
Compare the post-change CPU, memory, disk and network measurements with the test baseline. Check for changed disk performance, network feature support, driver or extension warnings, and zone placement. Roll back when the documented threshold or business impact requires it; do not compensate by repeatedly resizing without evidence.
An extension or agent fails
Record the extension version and error, verify support for the destination family and operating system, and test the corrected configuration outside production. Restore monitoring, backup and security coverage before declaring the migration complete.
The deadline is close and testing is incomplete
Escalate the risk to the service owner and change authority. Prioritize the most critical workloads, choose the destination with the strongest existing evidence, secure quota and capacity, and schedule a controlled window with a tested recovery point. An untested last-minute change is risky, but leaving a VM until retirement guarantees deallocation and loss of service.
