Convert the iPhone clip to a square MPEG-4 video, then upload it through Telegram’s profile-photo flow. Telegram’s current API documentation recommends 800×800 pixels and supports square videos up to 1080×1080. FFmpeg can crop, scale and encode the clip, but you’ll need to choose the framing and check the result on your own footage.
What Telegram expects
Telegram’s user-profile API documentation describes animated profile videos as square MPEG-4 videos: 800×800 is the recommended resolution, and square dimensions up to 1080×1080 are supported. The documentation also describes a video_start_ts value, in seconds, for choosing the frame used as the static preview. These are API specifications; which controls are exposed can depend on the Telegram client and upload flow you use.
The official references cited here do not establish a universal maximum duration or file size for a user’s animated profile video. Telegram lists VIDEO_FILE_INVALID as a possible upload error, but that does not identify a single cause. Don’t rely on an uncited duration or byte limit as the explanation for a failed upload.

iPhone camera files commonly use HEVC video and may be saved as MOV, but their orientation, frame rate and color characteristics can vary. In particular, don’t assume every clip is SDR or that its orientation is represented the same way. Check the file and view it in a player before choosing a crop; an automatic center crop can cut off a subject near an edge.

FFmpeg’s documentation describes its transcoding and filtering capabilities, including crop and scale filters. The command below is an illustrative starting point, not a tested recipe for every iPhone clip. It assumes a working FFmpeg installation with the libx264 encoder.
Convert the video to a square MP4
Run this in a terminal, replacing the input filename with your clip’s path:

ffmpeg -i input.MOV -vf "crop=min(iw,ih):min(iw,ih),scale=800:800,format=yuv420p" -an -c:v libx264 -movflags +faststart output.mp4The filter center-crops the image to a square, scales it to Telegram’s recommended 800×800 size, and converts the output to a common pixel format. The command removes audio with -an; it does not specify a duration or bitrate because the official references reviewed do not establish a universal value for either. Check that your installed FFmpeg build includes libx264; if it does not, this exact command will fail at encoding.

- Crop: fills the square without margins, but discards part of the original frame. The example uses a centered crop; adjust the crop position if the subject is off-center.
- Pad: preserves the full frame but adds margins to make it square. This may better suit a clip where cropping would remove important content. FFmpeg’s filter documentation covers crop and scale; choose padding and its appearance to suit your footage.
After conversion, play output.mp4 and check that the subject remains in frame, the video is upright, and the colors look acceptable. The command does not guarantee color fidelity for HDR footage or correct every source’s rotation metadata. If the result looks wrong, inspect the source’s orientation and color characteristics and adjust the conversion rather than assuming one filter chain works for every iPhone clip.

Upload it and choose a useful preview
- Open Telegram’s profile-photo controls and select the converted
output.mp4file in the animated-video upload flow. - Review the still preview as well as the animation. Telegram’s API describes
video_start_tsfor selecting the preview frame; a client may or may not expose that parameter directly. - Confirm the uploaded result in your Telegram client. If Telegram rejects the file, check its square dimensions and MPEG-4 output, then inspect the clip and conversion settings. The API’s
VIDEO_FILE_INVALIDerror does not, by itself, identify which property needs changing.
Why an iPhone video may not upload or look right
- It is still HEVC or in an unsuitable container: use the converted MP4 output rather than selecting the original camera file.
- The framing is wrong: a center crop can cut off an off-center subject. Reposition the crop or use padding to retain the full image.
- The picture is rotated or its colors change: inspect the source’s orientation and HDR/SDR characteristics. The cited FFmpeg and Telegram documentation does not guarantee a particular color or rotation result for each iPhone clip.
- The upload is rejected: confirm the output is square MPEG-4 at a documented supported dimension and try the upload again. The official profile-photo references reviewed do not specify a universal duration or file-size ceiling, so an exact limit cannot be given from those sources.
How the bot API differs
Telegram’s Bot API separately describes animated profile photos as MPEG-4 and includes a main-frame timestamp. That is bot-facing documentation, not a substitute for the user-profile upload instructions above. If you are uploading a profile video through a bot, follow the Bot API method and its parameters rather than assuming the user-client flow is identical.
