To enter a Max Battle, your Pokémon must already be Dynamax or Gigantamax. Catch an eligible Pokémon, unlock and level its Max Moves with Candy and Max Particles, then choose a build that fits the current Power Spot Boss and your group. Before spending resources, check the live game for the boss, particle costs, storage limits, and available battle party.
Start with the entry requirement
Max Battles have a form requirement that ordinary Pokémon cannot meet: only Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon can be used. A high-level, fully powered-up regular Pokémon is not a substitute. You need at least one eligible Pokémon in the battle party before the game will let you join.
What counts as eligible
- Dynamax Pokémon: These can enter Max Battles and can learn a Max attack plus the support moves Max Spirit and Max Guard.
- Gigantamax Pokémon: These can enter Max Battles, use a species-specific G-Max move, and can also learn the support moves.
- Ordinary Pokémon: A non-Dynamax or non-Gigantamax Pokémon cannot be selected for the battle, regardless of its Combat Power, level, or normal moveset.
How to get your first eligible Pokémon
The official Pokémon GO guide identifies two dependable routes: catch Dynamax Pokémon from Max Battle encounters, or complete the introductory To the Max! Special Research, which provides initial Dynamax encounters. Once you have one, place it in the party you intend to use and open its Max Move screen before traveling to a Power Spot.
Do not begin by trying to optimize a regular raid attacker. The correct order is to obtain the required Max form first, then evaluate its moves, resources, and matchup.

Understand what you are training
Max preparation is an in-game upgrade process. On the eligible Pokémon’s detail screen, Candy and Max Particles are used to unlock and level Max Moves. The Help Center explains that a trained Max Move has a stronger effect against a Max Pokémon than an untrained version.
The three practical move roles

The attack type is not chosen independently for a Dynamax Pokémon: changing its Fast Attack can change the type of its Max attack. Read the move information on the current Pokémon before investing Candy and particles, especially if you are preparing for a particular boss.
Do not assume one universal upgrade order
The documented mechanics establish what each move does, but they do not establish a single best build for every boss or team. A damage-focused upgrade can be sensible for a group that already has healing and protection. Max Spirit may be the more valuable investment when several players are struggling to stay alive. Max Guard can fill a defensive gap when the boss’s incoming damage is the limiting factor.
Compare the move options against the encounter and your group’s needs. A move that looks weaker on a solo screen can be the better party investment if it prevents multiple teammates from fainting during the Max phase.
Collect and budget Max Particles
Max Particles serve two different purposes: entering Max Battles and training Max Moves. Treat them as a battle budget, not as a resource that can be spent entirely on upgrades before you know where you will fight.
Where particles come from
- Power Spots: Interact with Power Spots on the map to collect particles and to locate Max Battles.
- Exploration: The official guide describes collection while exploring, with Adventure Sync and the Nearby menu helping surface the feature.
- Live in-game displays: Use the current particle counter and the entry screen to confirm what you can collect, store, and spend.
Plan around changing limits
The official general guidance confirms that daily collection and storage are limited, but it does not publish a stable numeric cap. The cap, the amount needed for a particular battle, and the cost of a move upgrade can change. Check the current game immediately before you commit particles.

A dated example illustrates why an old number should not be treated as a permanent rule: during the 2024 GO Wild Area: Global event, the event announcement listed a daily collection limit of 1,600 Max Particles. That was an event bonus for that event, not a current general limit.
A practical spending sequence
- Open the Max Battle or Power Spot you plan to use and note the particle entry requirement shown there.
- Reserve enough particles for that entry before buying a move upgrade.
- Spend remaining particles on the move that addresses the boss or your party’s missing role.
- Recheck the particle counter after every purchase. Do not rely on a remembered cost from another event or Pokémon.
- If the game shows that you are at a storage or daily collection limit, spend or wait according to the current instructions rather than assuming the limit will be the same tomorrow.
Choose a Pokémon for the actual boss
There is no official universal ranking of the “best” Max Pokémon. Preparation is encounter-specific. The most useful comparison is between the current Power Spot Boss, the role your Pokémon will perform, and the resources required to make that role effective.
Use these five comparison questions
- What is the boss and how does it attack? Check the live Power Spot information. A Pokémon that performs well against one boss may be poorly suited to another.
- What role is missing from the group? Count the damage dealers, healers, and defensive users already expected to participate.
- What is the Max attack type? For Dynamax Pokémon, inspect the Fast Attack that determines the Max attack’s type and consider whether it gives a useful matchup.
- Can you afford the preparation? Compare the Candy and Max Particle cost of unlocking or leveling the intended moves with the particles reserved for battle entry.
- Will the group be large and coordinated enough? A difficult Gigantamax encounter can require a much larger, stronger group than a standard Dynamax battle.
Damage, healing, and mitigation decisions

These are planning principles, not an official ranking. The right investment depends on the boss, the strength of the available Trainers, and the moves your Pokémon can actually unlock.
Prepare the battle party before you travel
Power Spots are the locations for Max Battles, and their locations can change. Scout the map near the time you intend to play instead of assuming a spot will remain in the same place or host the same encounter.
Pre-battle checklist
- Confirm that at least one Pokémon in the party is Dynamax or Gigantamax.
- Inspect its Max attack type and the current levels of Max Spirit and Max Guard.
- Reserve the particles required to enter the intended battle.
- Check the current Power Spot Boss and any visible battle requirements.
- Decide whether your party is supplying damage, healing, mitigation, or a combination.
- Arrange a group appropriate to the encounter instead of relying only on your Pokémon’s individual Combat Power.
Know the group-size rules
The official general guide allows up to four Trainers to team up for a Dynamax Max Battle. Gigantamax encounters can include up to 40 Trainers, organized into groups of four or fewer. Those are participation limits, not a guarantee that any number of players will win.

A particular boss can require more or fewer people depending on its strength, the available counters, and how well the group uses the Max phase.

Use the battle phases deliberately
Max Battles reward active play. The opening phase is not simply a countdown to transformation; your actions determine how quickly the meter fills and how much value you get from the three-turn Max phase.
Regular phase: build the meter
- Tap to attack. Use Fast Attacks to damage the boss and build energy.
- Watch for the target prompt. When the game indicates that your Pokémon is targeted, dodge as directed to reduce avoidable damage.
- Swipe toward energy icons. Energy icons that appear in the arena can be collected by swiping. They fill the meter faster than relying only on attacks.
- Watch the meter. When it is full, your Pokémon Dynamaxes or Gigantamaxes for three turns.
The official guide summarizes the transformation as a three-turn Max phase. Because that window is short, do not trigger it without knowing whether the group needs damage, healing, or protection.
Max phase: choose a job for each turn
- Attack: Select the Max attack when immediate damage is the priority and the matchup supports it.
- Heal: Use Max Spirit when restoring the user and allies will keep the party active longer.
- Protect: Use Max Guard when reducing the boss’s damage is more valuable than one additional attack.
Coordinate when possible. If another Trainer is already providing healing and the party is healthy, duplicate healing may waste a Max turn. Conversely, if several players are near fainting, continuing to attack without support can leave the group unable to finish.

If your Pokémon faints
Fainting does not necessarily remove you from the encounter. The official guide says you can continue tapping and then cheer for teammates, which fills their meters faster. Use that time to support the surviving party rather than treating a fainted Pokémon as an automatic battle failure.
Preparing for Gigantamax encounters
Gigantamax battles deserve a separate plan because they combine a species-specific G-Max move with a difficult encounter format. A large lobby does not remove the need for trained moves or a balanced party.
Before joining
- Confirm that your Gigantamax Pokémon’s G-Max move is appropriate for the boss you are facing.
- Level support moves if your group lacks reliable healing or damage reduction.
- Coordinate with enough Trainers to compensate for the boss’s difficulty, not merely to reach the maximum lobby size.
- Arrive with the particle entry cost available; a full inventory of upgrade resources does not help if you cannot enter.
During the encounter
Keep the group’s role distribution visible. One player may need to attack while another uses Max Spirit and another uses Max Guard. If the boss is dealing manageable damage, shift future Max turns toward damage; if the party is collapsing, preserve the group first.

Common preparation mistakes and fixes
Trying to enter with an ordinary Pokémon
Symptom: The Pokémon is powerful in regular battles but cannot be selected for the Max Battle.
Fix: Obtain a Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon through a Max Battle encounter or the To the Max! Special Research, then add it to the battle party.
Spending every particle on upgrades
Symptom: A move is improved, but the game will not let you enter the planned battle because the entry cost is missing.
Fix: Check the battle’s current particle requirement first and reserve it before upgrading.
Assuming a historical cap is current
Symptom: A guide or memory says you can collect a particular number of particles, but the live game shows something different.

Leveling a move without a party plan
Symptom: Everyone brings damage, but the group repeatedly loses Pokémon before the boss is defeated.
Fix: Reassess the party’s roles. Add Max Spirit for healing or Max Guard for mitigation when those are the actual causes of failure.
Ignoring the meter and energy icons
Symptom: The group reaches the Max phase too late or misses opportunities to transform.

Treating the maximum lobby as a guaranteed win
Symptom: A large group enters a Gigantamax battle but still cannot defeat the boss.
Fix: Improve eligible Pokémon and Max Moves, assign support roles, and match the group size to the specific boss. The 40-Trainer Gigantamax limit is a participation rule, not a recommended minimum or a victory guarantee.
A repeatable preparation routine
- Identify the encounter: Check the current Power Spot Boss and whether it is a standard Dynamax or difficult Gigantamax battle.
- Verify eligibility: Put at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon in the party.
- Inspect the move screen: Confirm the Dynamax attack type, G-Max move if applicable, and the available support moves.
- Choose the missing role: Decide whether the party needs damage, healing, protection, or flexibility.
- Reserve particles: Keep the entry cost available before spending on training.
- Train deliberately: Use Candy and remaining Max Particles to unlock or level the move that addresses the encounter.
- Scout the Power Spot: Verify the location and timing because Power Spot locations can change.
- Coordinate the group: For Dynamax, plan within the four-Trainer team limit; for Gigantamax, use groups of four or fewer within the overall limit of up to 40 Trainers.
- Play the meter: Attack, dodge targeted hits, collect energy icons, and use each three-turn Max phase for the role the party needs at that moment.
What to check in the live game
Several values are intentionally not treated as permanent in this guide. Max Particle storage, daily collection, move costs, available bosses, and Power Spot locations can change. Before acting, rely on the current Pokémon GO screens for the exact numbers and availability. Official general guidance establishes the mechanics, while event announcements can add temporary bonuses that expire when the event ends.
