Prepare a Ferrari 296 by treating the first circuit day as two separate jobs: make the exact car compliant and mechanically ready, then prepare yourself to drive within a controlled learning plan. Confirm whether the car is a 296 GTB or GTS, its model year, market, wheel and tire configuration, and the organizer’s rules. Use the VIN-specific owner documentation and an authorized Ferrari service provider for pressures, wheel-fastening torque, brake limits, fluid specifications, and service procedures. Those figures are not established in Ferrari’s public material summarized here, and settings from another make or from a 296 Challenge or GT3 race car should not be transferred to a road car.

Start with the exact car and the event rules

A 296 prepared for a circuit must satisfy both Ferrari’s requirements for that particular vehicle and the event organizer’s requirements. Before paying for a place, identify the car precisely:

  • Confirm whether it is a 296 GTB or 296 GTS.
  • Record the model year, market, vehicle identification number and installed wheel design.
  • Read the organizer’s eligibility rules, noise limit, required safety equipment, passing procedure, flag meanings and driver briefing requirements.
  • Ask whether the event accepts a road-registered hybrid sports car, the installed tire type and any electronic driver aids that must remain enabled.

Ferrari’s published tire dimensions cited for this preparation are specifically for the 296 GTB: 245/35 ZR 20 at the front and 305/35 ZR 20 at the rear. Do not assume those dimensions apply to a GTS, another wheel package, every model year or every market. Read the sidewall and wheel markings on your car and compare them with its documentation.

If the manual does not answer a track-use question, ask an authorized Ferrari service provider rather than relying on a forum post or a race-car setup sheet. Ferrari’s public TechInfo service describes paid access to factory-authorized technical and parts information, but access terms and usefulness for an individual owner should be confirmed before subscribing. The owner documentation for your VIN and market remains the practical reference for operating the car.

Build a preparation schedule around inspection, not shopping

Before choosing tires or parts

Do not begin by buying track equipment. First establish whether the car’s current tires, brakes and service condition are suitable. A first event does not automatically require a new tire, a race pad or a change to the factory configuration. Replacing a serviceable component without confirming fitment can introduce a new problem.

Arrange enough time for an inspection that can identify a problem and still leave time for an authorized repair. Tell the service provider that the car will be used on a closed circuit and provide the event date and organizer rules. Ask for the findings in writing, including any item that needs attention before the car is driven hard.

Questions to resolve with Ferrari or the organizer

  • Which tire pressures and pressure-measurement procedure apply to this VIN, tire model and wheel configuration for circuit use?
  • Are there different instructions for a GTB and a GTS, or for the car’s particular model year?
  • What wheel-fastening torque and wheel-check procedure does Ferrari specify?
  • What brake-pad, disc and brake-fluid condition is acceptable for the event?
  • Are there any service campaigns, warning messages or hybrid-system restrictions that affect track use?
  • What equipment must be carried in the paddock or in the car?
  • Does the circuit impose a sound limit or a particular pit-lane and passing protocol?

No authoritative numeric answer to these Ferrari-specific questions is established by the public material considered for this guide. Leave the numbers blank until the applicable documentation or an authorized technician supplies them.

Choose and verify the tires on the car

Published 296 GTB dimensions

Axle Ferrari-published 296 GTB size What you must still verify
Front 245/35 ZR 20 Actual tire model, load and speed markings, wheel width, tread condition and the VIN-specific fitment
Rear 305/35 ZR 20 Actual tire model, load and speed markings, wheel width, tread condition and the VIN-specific fitment

The dimensions are not a complete setup. A tire with the right nominal size can still be unsuitable if its construction, approval, condition or wheel fitment does not match the car. Check for cuts, bulges, exposed cords, uneven wear, puncture repairs, aging and adequate tread. Inspect the inner shoulders, which can be missed when looking at the car from outside.

Michelin’s two named options

Tire named for the 296 GTB Use described by Michelin What that means for a first event
Pilot Sport 4 S K1 Predominantly road driving A road-oriented option identified for the 296 GTB; it is not evidence that a new set is required before a novice day
Pilot Sport Cup 2 R K2 Road-legal option for drivers wishing to push the 296 GTB on track A documented track-oriented option, but not a mandatory upgrade for a first event; confirm exact dimensions, approved fitment, condition and organizer acceptance

Michelin’s naming establishes intended use, not comparative lap times, wet-weather performance, service life, price or a universal recommendation for beginners. Do not infer those comparisons. If your current tires are correctly fitted and in good condition, ask Ferrari or the organizer whether they are acceptable before considering a change. If you do buy a different tire, verify the exact K1 or K2 specification rather than ordering by a generic size alone.

Pressure information is a verification item

Neither the cited Ferrari material nor the Michelin information establishes a 296-specific cold pressure, hot pressure, target operating window or after-session adjustment. Do not copy numbers from another Ferrari, another make, a different tire compound or a 296 Challenge or GT3 car. Obtain the applicable instruction from the owner documentation, Ferrari authorized service or the organizer, and use a calibrated gauge whose range suits the specified value.

Ask the service provider how pressure should be checked when the car is cold, how the monitoring system should be handled and whether the event requires a post-session check. Keep a written record of the values supplied for your exact car; do not treat a value for a different wheel or tire as interchangeable.

Have the brakes and electronic systems checked

What Ferrari’s technical description does—and does not—tell you

Ferrari describes the 296 GTB with brake-by-wire technology and electronic dynamics functions including ABS evo. Its “296 GTB: Defining Fun to Drive” material says that, when driving on track, grip estimation is 35% faster than in previous applications. These are engineering descriptions, not a replacement for an inspection or a promise that a warning-free road drive proves the car is ready for repeated high-load braking.

Have an authorized technician check the items Ferrari specifies for your car. The inspection should address warning messages, pad and disc condition, brake-fluid condition, leaks, lines, sensors and any maintenance concern identified in the vehicle’s records. Do not invent or assume a minimum pad thickness, disc limit, brake-fluid grade, fluid-change interval or wheel torque. Those values must come from the applicable Ferrari documentation or service provider.

Warning messages are a stop signal

Resolve any brake, hybrid, powertrain, tire-pressure or stability-control warning before the event. Do not clear a warning merely to make the dashboard look normal. Ask Ferrari whether the message indicates a sensor fault, a service requirement or a restriction on driving. If a warning appears at the circuit, leave the track safely and follow the organizer’s recovery procedure; do not continue on the assumption that the system will protect the car.

Brake use during the first session

Follow Ferrari’s and the organizer’s warm-up instructions. Learn the circuit before attempting maximum braking, leave generous margin at the braking points and avoid repeated emergency stops while you are still learning the layout. If the pedal feel changes, the car pulls, a warning appears or braking performance seems inconsistent, signal appropriately, leave the circuit and have the car inspected.

Check fluids, cooling and hybrid-system condition through the correct source

A track session increases heat and operating load, but the public sources used here do not establish a Ferrari 296 fluid checklist, coolant procedure, oil specification, brake-fluid replacement interval, warm-up sequence, cool-down sequence or post-session inspection interval. Use the car’s manual and Ferrari service guidance for each of those items.

  • Make sure the cooling system and underbody are free from damage or obstruction.
  • Understand any instructions for charging, battery state of charge and hybrid-system operation at the venue.
  • Ask whether the car should be connected to a charger between sessions and what equipment the circuit provides.

Do not substitute generic “track-day” fluid advice for Ferrari’s specification. A fluid that is suitable for another car can have a different approval, service requirement or interaction with the 296’s systems.

Prepare yourself before you prepare for speed

Learn the flags and passing rules

Read the organizer’s briefing before arrival. Know the meaning of every flag, where passing is allowed, the pit-entry and pit-exit lines, the procedure for a mechanical problem and how to rejoin after an off-track excursion. A first event is a learning exercise; the fastest legal lap is not the objective.

Use a staged pace plan

  1. First laps: Drive at a pace that lets you identify every corner, marshal post, braking area and runoff. Concentrate on smooth steering, braking and throttle inputs.
  2. Next laps: Add pace only while you can repeat the line and remain aware of mirrors, flags and traffic. Keep electronic aids in the configuration allowed by Ferrari and the organizer.
  3. Later sessions: Change one variable at a time, such as braking confidence or corner exit speed. Do not chase a lap-time improvement by braking beyond your known margin.
  4. Any abnormal sign: End the session if you notice a warning, fluid smell, smoke, unusual vibration, tire damage, changed pedal feel or a temperature indication outside Ferrari’s guidance.

Ask the organizer whether an instructor can ride with you. Structured coaching can shorten the time needed to learn flags, lines and braking references without turning the first session into a test of the car’s limits.

Consider Ferrari’s own driver training

Ferrari describes Corso Pilota Sport as a two-day Fiorano experience in a 296 GTB that includes circuit driving and vehicle-control instruction. Ferrari’s course page presents the idea in Italian as “La pista è l’ambiente ideale per godere delle prestazioni di una Ferrari in tutta sicurezza.” In English: “The track is the ideal environment to enjoy a Ferrari’s performance in complete safety.” The statement is Ferrari’s, not a quotation from a named instructor.

Pack for the circuit without overloading the plan

Documents and information

  • Driver’s license, event confirmation, emergency contact and insurance information required by the organizer.
  • VIN-specific owner documentation and the written instructions supplied by Ferrari service.
  • Notes showing the approved tire model, fitment and pressure procedure for your car.
  • A copy of the event schedule, map, flag rules and noise policy.

Car and driver essentials

  • Helmet and clothing that meet the organizer’s stated standards.
  • Secure footwear and clothing that allow precise pedal control.
  • Water, sun protection and a way to rest between sessions.
  • A compatible pressure gauge and basic inspection light, used only according to the values and procedures supplied for your Ferrari.
  • Any charging cable, tire equipment or safety item the organizer specifically requires.

Do not treat a generic torque wrench, pressure target or brake tool as proof of a Ferrari requirement. Equipment is useful only when it matches the car’s documented procedure and the event’s rules.

Use this arrival and session routine

  1. Complete registration and briefing: Confirm your group, passing rules, flags, pit-lane speed, sound restrictions and emergency procedure.
  2. Inspect before unloading or entering: Look for new damage, leaks, tire defects and warning messages. Verify that loose items are removed or secured as the organizer requires.
  3. Confirm the documented setup: Check the installed tires and wheels against the approved configuration. Set or verify pressures only using the Ferrari-supplied procedure.
  4. Drive the first session conservatively: Learn the circuit, warm the car as instructed and leave a margin at every braking point.
  5. Return for a structured check: Look for damage, unusual smells, fluid loss, tire issues and dashboard warnings. Record observations and follow the service provider’s instructions for any adjustment.
  6. Stop when the car or driver is not normal: Fatigue, overheating indications, changed pedal feel, vibration or a warning is a reason to stop and ask for help, not a reason to complete another lap.

The exact post-session pressure adjustment, cooling procedure and inspection interval must come from Ferrari documentation or an authorized technician; this guide deliberately does not supply generic numbers.

Common preparation mistakes to avoid

  • Applying GTB data to a GTS: The published 245/35 ZR 20 front and 305/35 ZR 20 rear figures are identified for the 296 GTB only.
  • Assuming Cup 2 R is compulsory: Michelin names it as a road-legal, track-oriented option, not as a required first-day purchase.
  • Copying race-car settings: Challenge and GT3 cars have different uses, specifications and operating procedures.
  • Using a forum pressure or torque value: A number without the correct VIN, wheel, tire, market and procedure may be wrong for your car.
  • Ignoring road-car condition: Sophisticated brake-by-wire and ABS evo systems do not remove the need to inspect pads, discs, fluid, lines and warnings.
  • Chasing a lap time immediately: A consistent, controlled first session is more useful than an early excursion or damaged tire.
  • Arriving without the rules: Flags, sound limits, passing zones and required equipment vary by organizer and circuit.

What to verify before you leave home

  • The car identity: GTB or GTS, year, market, VIN and wheel configuration.
  • The organizer’s acceptance of the car, tires and driver equipment.
  • Current service status and resolution of every warning message.
  • Brake, tire, wheel and fluid checks completed through Ferrari documentation or an authorized provider.
  • Exact tire pressures, wheel torque and any warm-up or cool-down procedure written down from an authoritative source.
  • A conservative first-session plan and a clear stop condition.

Ferrari’s public material supports the GTB tire dimensions, the named Michelin options, the description of the 296’s brake and electronic systems, and the existence of the two-day Corso Pilota Sport experience. It does not establish the numeric pressure, torque, brake-limit, fluid or break-in values needed to create a universal Ferrari 296 track-day checklist. Verify those details for the individual car before driving onto the circuit.
