Set up the Dell XPS 14 9440 with the adapter connected, finish Windows setup, and then choose the diagnostic route that matches the symptom. A computer that reaches Windows uses SupportAssist checks; one that cannot start Windows needs Dell’s pre-boot assessment and the model-specific manual procedures for power, display, recovery, or reset problems.

Set up the XPS 14 9440 for the first time

Dell’s Owner’s Manual gives one important first-start instruction: “Ensure that the power adapter is connected to your computer when it is turned on for the first time.” The battery may enter a power-saving state during shipment, so connecting external power avoids mistaking that state for a dead computer.

  1. Connect the supplied power adapter. Plug it into the laptop and a working electrical outlet before pressing the power button.
  2. Turn on the computer. The first boot can take longer than a normal wake-up while Windows prepares the device.
  3. Complete the Windows prompts. Choose the region, keyboard layout, privacy options, and other screens shown by your installed Windows edition.
  4. Connect to a network when possible. Dell recommends internet access so Windows can obtain updates during setup. If you are online, Windows offers the option to use or create a Microsoft account. If you are not connected, an offline account option may be available.
  5. Finish the Support and Protection screen. Enter the requested contact details if you want Dell’s support and protection features associated with the computer.
  6. Let setup complete before diagnosing performance. Updates, device configuration, and background indexing can make a new installation temporarily busy.

Setup screens and illustrations can vary with the ordered configuration; Dell specifically warns that the manual’s images may not match every XPS 14 9440. Record the Windows edition, the computer’s service tag, and any message shown during setup. Those details make a later support or warranty conversation more precise.

What you see First route What to record
Windows reaches the desktop or sign-in screen Run the relevant SupportAssist diagnostic and then follow Dell’s symptom-specific Windows guidance. Exact symptom, when it began, affected app or device, and any diagnostic code.
The computer powers on but Windows does not load Use Dell’s pre-boot assessment and the XPS 14 9440 manual’s boot, storage, display, or recovery procedures. Screen message, diagnostic light pattern, whether the Dell logo appears, and any reported code.
No normal startup response Check external power, then use the manual’s applicable residual-power, RTC, M-BIST, L-BIST, or other hardware procedure. Charging-light behavior, fan or keyboard-light activity, and whether the display remains blank.
A peripheral fails after Windows loads Use the matching Dell category for Wi-Fi, audio, touch, webcam, display, or another device rather than applying a generic reset. Device name, connection type, error text, and whether the failure occurs in more than one application.

Do not treat a reset as a universal fix. The Owner’s Manual separates Wi-Fi troubleshooting, self-tests, recovery media, RTC reset, and draining residual power because each addresses a different failure state.

When the XPS 14 9440 will not turn on or Windows will not load

Start with power, not software

  • Confirm that the adapter is firmly connected at both ends and that the outlet works with another device.
  • Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, docks, storage drives, and displays. A faulty external device can complicate startup diagnosis.
  • Observe the charging indicator, keyboard illumination, fan activity, and any diagnostic-light pattern. These observations distinguish a power problem from a display or boot problem.
  • If the computer was just unboxed, keep it connected to the adapter while testing; the shipped battery power-saving state is a documented reason for requiring external power on first startup.

If there is still no normal response, consult the XPS 14 9440 Owner’s Manual for the exact symptom before trying a reset. Dell’s manual includes separate procedures for diagnostic lights, M-BIST, L-BIST, LCD BIST, RTC reset, recovery media, and draining residual power.

Use pre-boot diagnostics when the operating system cannot start

Dell’s pre-boot assessment runs outside Windows, so it is the appropriate route when the operating system never reaches a usable screen. Follow the model-specific on-screen procedure in Dell’s XPS 14 9440 support documentation. Allow each test to finish, note the component name and complete code, and save any validation or error reference presented at the end.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A code is more useful than a description such as “it failed.” Record the code exactly, including leading zeroes or letters, and note whether the test was for memory, storage, the display, a fan, or another component. Do not replace hardware solely because a single test was interrupted; rerun it once with external devices disconnected and then use Dell’s instructions for that code.

Understand the built-in self-tests

The manual lists several self-test families. M-BIST and L-BIST help distinguish system-board or startup faults, while LCD BIST focuses on the panel and display path. Diagnostic lights can provide a hardware indication when the screen is unavailable. These tests are not interchangeable: select the one that corresponds to the symptom shown in the manual, and document the result before moving to recovery or service.

Use residual-power drain or RTC reset only for the matching symptom

Dell’s general hard-reset guidance includes holding the power button for 15–20 seconds. That timing is a general Dell procedure, not proof that every XPS 14 9440 fault will be cured by it. The model manual also distinguishes draining residual power from an RTC reset. Read the prerequisites and expected result for the named procedure, disconnect accessories as instructed, and stop if the manual warns that a particular configuration or symptom needs service instead.

An RTC reset can affect firmware settings and is not a substitute for recovering a damaged Windows installation. If the computer reaches diagnostics but not Windows, use the documented recovery-media or operating-system recovery path rather than repeatedly forcing power cycles.

If Windows starts but a feature is failing

Once you can sign in, avoid broad “repair” steps that erase useful evidence. Dell separates common issue categories, including slow performance, audio, touch input, webcam, wireless networking, and other devices.

Slow performance

  • Write down whether the slowdown affects startup, one application, web browsing, or the whole desktop.
  • Note whether it began immediately after setup, an update, a new peripheral, or a change in power mode.
  • Run the Windows-capable SupportAssist checks and keep the resulting component or code.

A newly configured computer can perform background updates and indexing, so a short period of activity after first setup is not by itself evidence of a failed component. Persistent or worsening slowness should be matched to Dell’s performance troubleshooting path.

Wi-Fi or other networking

Record whether nearby networks are visible, whether the XPS 14 9440 connects but loses access, and whether another device works on the same network. Use Dell’s wireless-networking procedure for the installed Windows version. Do not jump to an RTC reset or firmware recovery for a network symptom unless Dell’s model-specific instructions direct you there.

Audio, touch, webcam, and other devices

Test the affected function in more than one Windows application, identify the exact device, and capture any Windows error text. Dell provides separate support steps for audio, touch, webcam, and other common categories. Following the matching path preserves the distinction between a driver problem, an application permission issue, and a hardware fault.

How to run diagnostics on an XPS 14 9440

When Windows boots: SupportAssist

  1. Open Dell SupportAssist from Windows.
  2. Choose the diagnostic or scan that corresponds to the symptom, such as hardware health or a specific component.
  3. Keep the adapter connected and do not close the lid or disconnect a device while a test is running.
  4. Read the final result, including any component name, error code, and recommended action.
  5. Save the result before contacting Dell or changing hardware.

SupportAssist is the practical first route for a bootable system because it can test from within the operating system and connect the result to Dell’s support workflow.

When Windows does not boot: pre-boot assessment

  1. Power the XPS 14 9440 on with unnecessary external devices disconnected.
  2. Enter the Dell pre-boot diagnostic route described for this model in Dell’s current support instructions.
  3. Let the automated assessment complete unless the screen identifies a safe cancellation option for a clearly irrelevant test.
  4. Write down every code and validation reference, not just the final status.
  5. Use the code in Dell’s model-specific support guidance or provide it to Dell support.

Pre-boot assessment is not a preference-based alternative to SupportAssist: it exists for the case in which Windows cannot provide a working environment.

What the published evidence does not establish

Dell’s official materials reviewed for this guide do not publish an XPS 14 9440 failure rate, diagnostic success rate, or setup-outcome percentage. Do not use a generic laptop statistic to predict how likely a particular fault is. The 15–20-second power-button instruction is a procedure, and Dell’s listed 1 minute 34 second pre-boot-diagnostics video is a media length; neither is a reliability statistic.

Update the XPS 14 9440 BIOS safely

BIOS files and driver availability change, so use Dell’s live XPS 14 9440 driver page rather than relying on an old version number. Select the installed operating system and then choose the BIOS category to see the applicable package and current instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare before downloading

  • Sign in with an administrator account. Dell’s BIOS guidance says an administrator must install the update.
  • Connect the power adapter and ensure the battery is not near empty.
  • Disconnect external devices unless Dell’s current instructions specifically require one.
  • Confirm that you can access Windows recovery options or other recovery media if startup problems occur afterward.
  • If BitLocker is enabled, temporarily suspend its protection as Dell directs. BitLocker resumes automatically after the computer restarts.

Install and verify

  1. Download the BIOS package listed for the XPS 14 9440 and your installed operating system.
  2. Close applications and save work.
  3. Run the package with administrator privileges and follow each on-screen confirmation.
  4. Do not turn off the computer, close the lid, unplug power, or interrupt the restart while firmware is being written.
  5. After Windows returns, verify that the computer starts normally and that BitLocker protection has resumed.

If the live Dell page changes its prerequisites, follow that page over an older screenshot or forum post. A BIOS update should address a documented compatibility, security, or stability need; it is not a first response to every audio, Wi-Fi, or performance complaint.

Connect a DisplayPort monitor

The XPS 14 9440 sends video through its Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports. For a monitor with a DisplayPort input, Dell specifies a USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter, sold separately. The adapter is a physical requirement for that connection, not an optional convenience.

Choose an adapter that matches the monitor

Check before buying Why it matters
Monitor input Confirm that the display actually accepts DisplayPort through the connector you plan to use.
Resolution The adapter must support the monitor’s native resolution at the intended refresh rate.
Refresh rate Some adapters support a lower rate than the monitor’s maximum, especially at high resolutions.
Number of displays If you plan to use more than one external screen, verify the adapter, dock, and XPS port configuration together.
Power and features Check whether the monitor requires USB-C power delivery, HDR, audio over DisplayPort, or another feature the adapter must carry.

Dell’s statement that an adapter is required does not mean every USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter supports every display mode. Match the adapter’s published capability to the monitor’s resolution and refresh-rate requirements before purchasing.

Connect and isolate a blank-screen problem

  1. Turn the monitor on and select its DisplayPort input.
  2. Connect the adapter to a Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port on the XPS 14 9440, then connect the DisplayPort cable to the adapter and monitor.
  3. Wait for Windows to detect the display, then open Windows display settings to choose duplicate, extend, or second-screen-only mode.
  4. If no image appears, reseat both cable ends, select the correct monitor input, and test the other Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port.
  5. Try a known-good DisplayPort cable or a different adapter whose specifications meet the monitor’s mode.
  6. If the internal display also fails, stop treating the issue as an adapter problem and use the XPS 14 9440 display diagnostics, including the LCD BIST procedure where appropriate.

Do not infer that a port is defective from one unsupported resolution or refresh-rate combination. First compare the monitor mode with the adapter’s stated limits.

Recovery, documentation, and escalation

Use the Owner’s Manual for model-specific procedures

The XPS 14 9440 Owner’s Manual is the governing reference for the exact hardware. Its contents cover SupportAssist pre-boot checks, M-BIST, L-BIST, LCD BIST, diagnostic lights, RTC reset, recovery media, and residual-power procedures. Select the chapter that matches the observed symptom instead of applying a procedure copied from a different Dell model.

Use the current support article for changing software details

Dell’s product-specific support article was modified on February 22, 2024, and its BIOS and driver details can become stale. The regional documentation listing used for the manual displayed an April 17, 2026 update. Those dates identify the documents, but the live Dell support page remains the authority for the package, operating-system choice, and current prerequisites shown when you work on the computer.

Escalate with a complete record

Contact Dell support or arrange service when the model-specific diagnostic identifies a hardware fault, when the computer remains unable to start after the documented power checks, or when a BIOS or recovery procedure reports an error that the instructions do not resolve. Provide the service tag, Windows edition, symptom timeline, diagnostic code, test name, and steps already completed. This prevents repeated resets and gives the technician actionable evidence.

A fast, safe checklist

  • Adapter connected before first power-on.
  • Windows setup completed with network access when available.
  • Boot state identified: Windows works, Windows fails, or there is no normal startup response.
  • SupportAssist used only when Windows is bootable.
  • Pre-boot assessment used when Windows cannot start.
  • Codes, light patterns, and exact messages recorded.
  • Manual procedure matched to the symptom before any RTC reset, residual-power drain, or recovery action.
  • Administrator account, external-device removal, BitLocker suspension, and recovery access prepared before a BIOS update.
  • USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter selected for the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate.
