Prepare for a quantum-safe upgrade by improving your recovery discipline and tracking official network changes—not by buying a device or moving coins to an address advertised as “quantum-proof.” A wallet helps you create, store, and use signing keys, but the blockchain protocol decides which signature schemes and transaction formats are valid. A hardware wallet can protect key handling; it cannot change those rules.
No universal one-click migration is available for Bitcoin or Ethereum on the evidence currently published. The practical plan is to keep recovery material secure and usable, document exactly which network and wallet you use, avoid unsupported claims, and follow dated instructions from the network and wallet maintainers if a migration is activated.
What “quantum-safe” means for a crypto wallet
Quantum risk concerns the cryptographic signatures that prove control of blockchain funds. A sufficiently capable, cryptographically relevant quantum computer could use new algorithms to attack some public-key systems used by blockchains. That is a future capability, not a reason to assume that current accounts are being emptied today.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe wallet and the blockchain have different jobs:
- Wallet software or hardware generates keys, signs transactions, displays addresses, and helps you recover access.
- The blockchain protocol defines which signature algorithms, public-key formats, transaction types, and verification rules nodes accept.
- A migration therefore needs both a network-level rule change and wallet software that can create and sign the new transaction format.
Replacing a device, generating a new seed, or storing a seed on metal does not by itself alter the signature algorithm accepted by a chain. The Ethereum Foundation’s post-quantum team says it does not believe a cryptographically relevant quantum computer is imminent, while also treating migration as a long-term engineering and coordination problem. Do not turn that assessment into a prediction of a specific “Q-day.”

The preparation you can do now
1. Make your recovery material usable and private
Verify that you can recover each wallet using the method documented by its maker. Check the exact word order, any passphrase or optional extension, account derivation choices, and the networks you use. Keep more than one offline copy in locations you can reach during an emergency, but never photograph, email, paste, or upload the recovery phrase.
A durable backup plate can help preserve words against fire or water, but it is only a backup medium. It does not make a vulnerable signature quantum-safe and does not replace following the wallet’s required recovery format. Test recovery with a small amount, where your wallet’s instructions permit it, before trusting a backup with substantial funds.
2. Record the network, wallet, account type, and address format
Write down whether each holding is on Bitcoin, Ethereum, or another network; the wallet application or device; the account or address type; and whether a passphrase, multisignature arrangement, smart-contract account, or exchange custody is involved. Future migration rules may apply differently to legacy and newer address types. A precise inventory prevents you from following instructions for the wrong chain or account.

3. Keep wallet software and firmware maintainable
Install updates only through the wallet maker’s normal, authenticated channel. Maintain access to the operating system, phone, computer, or hardware needed to run the wallet. A migration may require a newer wallet version, a new transaction screen, or a firmware change. “Cold” storage that cannot be updated or recovered when needed can become an operational problem even if its keys remain secret.
4. Follow primary, dated announcements
Use official network governance, developer, and wallet-maintainer announcements. Look for a specific activation date or block condition, supported account types, required software versions, fee guidance, and a documented recovery procedure. Treat an undated social-media post, unsolicited email, or website asking for a seed phrase as a phishing attempt unless the official channel independently confirms it.
5. Do not migrate merely because a headline says quantum computers are coming
Moving funds can introduce address mistakes, fees, tax records, phishing exposure, and loss of access. Move only when a verified protocol change requires it or when your normal security plan calls for it. Never enter a seed phrase into a “migration” website, send a seed to support staff, or sign a transaction whose destination and purpose you cannot verify.

What current standards do—and do not—provide
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) says three post-quantum cryptography standards are available for implementation and advises organizations to identify vulnerable algorithms and plan replacements or updates. Those standards provide building blocks for migration; they do not automatically change a cryptocurrency network.
Recommended Free Tools
NIST’s IR 8547 transition report is a draft intended to inform migration. It is not a final mandate for consumer crypto wallets. A blockchain still has to select suitable algorithms, specify key and signature encodings, update consensus or transaction rules, and provide a path for existing account holders. Wallet developers then have to implement compatible signing and recovery behavior.
| Layer | What must change | What you can verify |
|---|---|---|
| Cryptography standard | A vetted post-quantum algorithm and implementation profile | Whether the network and wallet documentation name a supported standard |
| Blockchain protocol | Accepted signature schemes, transaction formats, and validation rules | An approved proposal, activation condition, and node or client support |
| Wallet software | Key generation, signing, address display, fees, and recovery for the new format | A release from the wallet maintainer that explicitly lists migration support |
| User operation | Any required transfer, account conversion, proof, or deadline | Official step-by-step instructions and a verifiable destination |
Bitcoin: what the current proposal means for preparation
BIP-361 describes a possible phased Bitcoin response; it is a proposal, not evidence that Bitcoin has adopted these phases. The proposal first contemplates restricting sends to quantum-vulnerable address types after a post-quantum output exists, followed later by tighter treatment of legacy ECDSA and Schnorr verification. Until Bitcoin’s governance and implementation process activates a rule, do not act as though those restrictions are in force.
Potential recovery and migration issues
The proposal discusses a possible recovery protocol based on knowledge of a parent extended private key derived through hardened BIP-32 paths. That description is not permission to expose a private key or proof that every wallet can participate. Wallets differ in derivation paths, account structures, backup formats, and support for extended keys. The proposal also leaves uncertainty about how much legacy supply could be covered.
What a Bitcoin holder should do
- Identify whether your addresses are legacy, SegWit, multisignature, or another supported type, using your wallet’s own documentation.
- Keep an offline record of the derivation path and recovery details required by that wallet, without publishing private material.
- Watch Bitcoin Core, BIP status, and your wallet maintainer for an accepted proposal, release, and activation notice—not just discussion of BIP-361.
- When an official migration exists, confirm the destination address on the device or trusted wallet interface and perform a small test transaction if the instructions recommend one.
Ethereum: what the post-quantum roadmap says
The Ethereum Foundation’s post-quantum project covers the execution, consensus, and data layers. Its rough directional roadmap includes post-quantum signature precompiles, transactions, attestations, and blobs, with full post-quantum consensus and transactions described as longer-term work. The team explicitly says the roadmap is subject to change as research, implementation, and community governance evolve.
Account migration is a direction, not a live consumer feature
The execution-layer direction includes gradual, opt-in account migration using account abstraction. That is a protocol research direction, not a promise that an existing account can already be switched to a supported quantum-safe signature. Do not create a new Ethereum account solely because a service labels it “quantum-proof” unless Ethereum and the wallet documentation identify the account type and its accepted signature rules.

A possible emergency proof is not a recovery guarantee
In a September 2025 ETHBoulder talk, Ethereum Foundation co-executive director Tomasz Stańczak discussed a possible emergency approach using a zero-knowledge proof that a user holds the seed phrase associated with a public key. This was a discussed approach, not a deployed recovery promise. It illustrates why you should preserve your recovery material and wait for official instructions rather than improvising a proof or sending funds to an unverified contract.
Hardware wallets: useful custody, not quantum protection
A hardware wallet can keep signing keys off a general-purpose computer and show transaction details on a separate screen. Those are valuable defenses against malware and accidental key exposure. They do not change the blockchain’s signature algorithm, hide a public key that the protocol exposes, or make an address immune to a future cryptographic attack.
When comparing wallets for long-term readiness, use established criteria rather than “quantum-safe” marketing:

How to evaluate an official migration notice
When a real migration is announced, work through the notice in this order:
- Confirm the source. Navigate to the network or wallet’s known official site yourself; do not use a link in an unsolicited message.
- Confirm the status. Look for a proposal number, client release, governance decision, activation block or date, and the networks or environments affected.
- Confirm compatibility. Check whether your address, account, multisignature setup, smart contract, or custody arrangement is supported.
- Confirm the operation. Determine whether migration means sending to a new address, converting an account, installing an update, signing a proof, or taking no action because the wallet migrates automatically.
- Confirm costs and limits. Read the fee, transaction-size, deadline, and congestion guidance. Larger signatures can affect both fees and block capacity.
- Protect recovery data. Follow the wallet’s documented recovery format, but never type a seed phrase into a web form or share it with a person.
- Test and document. If the official procedure permits, migrate a small amount first, verify receipt on the correct network, and retain transaction records.
Why migration may be expensive or slow
Post-quantum signatures generally require more space and computation than current elliptic-curve signatures. Migration transactions therefore compete for block space, and nodes, wallets, and hardware may need performance and security testing.

A 2026 Google Quantum AI paper estimates that moving Bitcoin assets could take several months even if the network processed only migration transactions, under that paper’s assumptions. This is a modeled estimate, not a timetable guaranteed by Bitcoin. The paper’s practical point is that coordination and throughput work must begin well before a quantum threat appears.

In the same context, Tomasz Stańczak estimated in a 2025 Ethereum.org talk that basic Ethereum transactions might become 10 to 20 times more expensive because of larger post-quantum signatures. That is a speaker estimate, not a measured current fee or guaranteed protocol outcome. Actual costs would depend on the chosen scheme, transaction format, block limits, demand, and implementation.
Common mistakes and safer alternatives
| Mistake | Why it fails | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Buying a device advertised as quantum-proof | A device cannot change network verification rules. | Choose a maintained wallet with a documented future update path. |
| Moving every holding to a new address immediately | There may be no activated quantum-safe format, and the move adds operational risk. | Wait for an official activation and follow chain-specific instructions. |
| Entering a seed into a migration page | That gives an attacker control of the funds. | Use the wallet’s native recovery or signing flow; no legitimate support worker needs the phrase. |
| Assuming a new seed fixes the protocol problem | A new seed can still produce keys using the same vulnerable scheme. | Verify the network’s accepted signature and account format first. |
| Treating a draft or roadmap as an active rule | Proposals and research can change or never activate. | Look for governance approval, released software, and an activation condition. |
| Waiting until an emergency | Large signatures and limited block space could make last-minute migration slow. | Keep backups usable and monitor official notices early. |
A simple readiness checklist
- Recovery words and any passphrase are offline, private, legible, and tested.
- You know every network, wallet, account type, derivation path, and custody arrangement holding your funds.
- Your wallet and firmware can receive authenticated updates.
- You have bookmarked or otherwise identified official network and wallet announcement channels.
- You reject claims that a hardware wallet, metal backup, or address is automatically quantum-safe.
- You will not share a seed phrase or sign an unexplained migration transaction.
- You understand that a real migration may involve new fees, larger transactions, deadlines, and staged support.
Direct answers to the questions holders ask
How do I prepare my crypto wallet for quantum computing?
Secure and test your recovery material, document your networks and account types, keep wallet software maintainable, and monitor official protocol and wallet announcements. There is no universal wallet setting that completes the upgrade today.
Are my Bitcoin or Ethereum funds safe from quantum computers today?
The reviewed Ethereum Foundation material says a cryptographically relevant quantum computer is not considered imminent. That is an assessment of timing, not a guarantee of permanent safety. Current protection still depends on ordinary key custody, phishing resistance, and the rules of each network.
Does a hardware wallet protect against quantum attacks?
It protects key handling and can reduce malware exposure, but it does not change on-chain signature rules or make an existing address quantum-safe.
Should I move crypto to a new address now?
Not solely because of an unsourced quantum warning. Move when an official, activated protocol and wallet procedure tells you what destination, account type, and transaction method to use.
What happens to my seed phrase when wallets upgrade?
There is no universal answer. A future wallet may derive a new key type from existing recovery material, require a conversion transaction, request a proof of control, or require a new backup. Follow the specific wallet’s documented procedure and never disclose the phrase.
How will I know when my wallet can migrate?
Look for a wallet release that names the relevant network upgrade, supported account or address types, and migration steps, alongside an official network activation notice. A marketing label without those details is not evidence of compatibility.
