Install the version-matched Chunky mod on your dedicated Forge or NeoForge server, restart it, select the world and area, then run chunky start from the console (or /chunky start in game as an operator). Chunky generates terrain before players explore it, moving much of the expensive world-generation work out of live play.
This guide covers installation, world and radius selection, Overworld/Nether/End workflows, monitoring, pausing and resuming, resource planning, and the common reasons a setup fails.

When a player explores new territory, Minecraft has to create terrain, structures and other world data while the server is also handling movement, entities, redstone and network traffic. A pre-generator visits the area in advance and saves those chunks. Later exploration can load existing chunks instead of creating all of that terrain during the session.
Chunky is a server-side pre-generation mod with Forge and NeoForge support. Its project description calls it “Pre-generates chunks, quickly, efficiently, and safely.” The practical result is not a guaranteed frame-rate or tick-rate improvement: the benefit depends on the server’s hardware, Minecraft version, dimension and other installed mods. It is best treated as a way to move a known, intensive job to a controlled maintenance window.

What you need before installing
- A dedicated Minecraft server running Forge or NeoForge.
- The exact Minecraft version and loader used by that server.
- Permission to stop and start the server and to place files in its
modsdirectory. - Enough free disk space for the additional generated chunks, plus room for normal world growth, logs and backups.
- A maintenance window in which the server can use substantial CPU, memory and disk I/O without disrupting players.
Do not download a jar merely because its Minecraft version looks close. The Chunky listing has separate Forge and NeoForge releases, and a file built for one loader or version should not be assumed to work on another.
Choose the correct Chunky release
Match Minecraft and the loader
- Open the Chunky project’s Forge/NeoForge file listing.
- Identify the Minecraft version reported by the server and whether it is Forge or NeoForge.
- Choose the Chunky file that explicitly matches both values. If several builds match, use the current release documented for that version rather than mixing files from different Minecraft versions.
- Download the server mod jar. Keep the downloaded filename unchanged unless the project documentation specifically instructs otherwise.
Version matching is the first diagnostic step if the server refuses to start, reports a missing dependency, or never exposes the chunky command.

- Stop the server cleanly. Do not copy or replace a mod jar while the server is writing world data.
- Place the version-matched Chunky jar in the dedicated server’s
modsfolder. Forge and NeoForge server installations use this folder for mods. - Start the server and watch the startup log for errors. A normal startup should complete without a loader or dependency failure.
- Keep the server running for the verification steps below. If it fails during startup, stop and correct the reported version, loader or dependency problem before attempting generation.
Chunky is installed server-side; players do not need the mod in their client installation merely to connect to a server that is using it. The server still has to be running the compatible loader and Minecraft version.
Verify that the mod and permissions work
From the server console
At the server console, enter:
chunkyThe help output confirms that the command is registered. Console commands do not use a leading slash.
From inside the game
An operator can enter:
/chunkyUse the help menu to view the commands supported by the installed release. If a regular player receives a permission error, have an operator run the command or grant the player the appropriate operator permission according to your server’s administration policy.

If the command is unknown
- Confirm that the jar is in the server’s
modsfolder, not a client-only mods folder. - Confirm that the jar matches both the server’s Minecraft version and loader.
- Restart after copying the jar; adding it while the server is running does not load it.
- Read the startup log for a loader rejection or dependency error, then replace the jar with the matching release.
- In game, check that the account is an operator and that the command begins with
/.
Define the area to generate
Chunky lets you set the active world, shape, center and radius. Decide the boundary before starting because a larger selection means more chunks to process, save and later back up. Start conservatively, measure the observed progress, and expand in a later run if the maintenance window and storage allow it.

A radius is the distance from the selected center to the edge of the requested area; it is not the full width across the area. The common example below requests a circular area with a 5,000-block radius. If your server has a particular spawn, hub or build site, make that point the center rather than assuming the world’s default origin is the right choice.
Shape and center settings
The exact subcommands for changing shape and center can vary with the installed release. Run chunky in the console or /chunky in game and follow that release’s help output for those settings. This avoids copying syntax from a different Minecraft or Chunky version.
Pregenerate an Overworld area
For the documented circular 5,000-block example, use the following sequence at the server console:

/chunky radius 5000
/chunky startThe first command sets the radius for the active world and the second begins generation. If you have changed the center or shape, those settings apply to the next start as well. Confirm the selection with the help or status output before launching a very large job.
Pregenerate the Nether or End
Chunky works on the currently selected world. Change that world before starting generation in another dimension. For example, the Nether is commonly selected with:
chunky world world_nether
chunky startFrom in game, use:
/chunky world world_nether
/chunky startWorld and dimension names vary by server setup and Minecraft version. Use the name shown by your server rather than assuming that every installation uses world_nether. Select the End in the same way with the actual world name configured on your server.
Each dimension has its own terrain and storage. A radius that is appropriate for the Overworld can be unnecessarily expensive in the Nether or End, so plan and monitor each world separately. Select the intended world again before every new job, especially after a restart or an interrupted run.

Monitor generation while it runs
When chunky start is running, its status reports the number of chunks processed, percentage complete, estimated time remaining, chunks per second and the current location. These values are live estimates, not fixed specifications. They can change as the job reaches different terrain, as other server tasks run, or as the operating system caches files.

Use the progress command when you need a separate status view:
chunky progressIn game, use /chunky progress. Record the observed rate and ETA after the server has been running long enough for the figures to settle; do not plan from a rate quoted for different hardware, dimensions, Minecraft versions or mod sets.
Pause and resume safely
Pause
To stop generation without abandoning the selection, run:
chunky pauseUse /chunky pause in game. Pausing is useful when players need the server, when disk activity becomes excessive, or when the maintenance window is ending. Allow the command to complete and confirm that generation has stopped before shutting down the server.
Continue
Resume a paused job with:
chunky continueThe in-game form is /chunky continue. Check the selected world and progress output after a restart before continuing, particularly if you changed dimensions or configuration while the server was offline.

Schedule the job without hurting live play
The project documentation recommends pre-generating before players join. Generation rapidly loads and unloads chunks, which makes the process memory-intensive and can consume substantial CPU and storage bandwidth. Running it while players are exploring the same world competes for those resources and can cause the very lag you are trying to avoid.
- Take a backup before a large run and verify that the backup is usable.
- Begin with a smaller radius and observe the real ETA, disk growth and server responsiveness.
- Run the job during a maintenance window or before the server opens to players.
- Leave free disk space for the generated data and for normal operation; do not fill the filesystem to its limit.
- Watch memory usage, CPU load, disk utilization and the server log rather than relying only on the percentage display.
- Pause the job if players must join or if the server becomes unstable, then resume it later.
There is no authoritative, universal chunks-per-second figure or completion time. Hardware, storage, Minecraft version, dimension and active mods all change the result. Treat the ETA shown by your own server as the useful estimate.
What performance improvement to expect
Pre-generation removes terrain creation from future visits to the selected area. It does not make every server operation faster, reduce entity load, repair an overloaded mod, or guarantee that exploration will never cause a tick-time spike. New terrain outside the selected boundary still has to be generated live.
Hosting documentation commonly describes pre-generation as a way to avoid matching world-generation load while players are online. That is an operational rationale, not a promise of a particular latency reduction. The measurable benefit on your server depends on how often players enter new territory and how expensive the rest of the modpack is.
Troubleshoot common failures

The workflow is effectively the same after installation. The important difference is selecting the loader-specific jar; do not treat Forge and NeoForge files as interchangeable.
Should you use another pre-generator?
Chunk Pregenerator is mentioned in community discussions as an alternative, but current first-party compatibility was not established for every Forge and NeoForge version. If you evaluate another project, verify the exact Minecraft version and loader before installing it.

A practical runbook
- Record the server’s Minecraft version, loader and active world names.
- Back up the world and check available disk space.
- Download the matching Chunky Forge or NeoForge jar and place it in
mods. - Restart and run

- Run

This sequence gives you a measured baseline for your own hardware instead of relying on a fixed completion promise that cannot account for your version, dimension and modpack.

For a Forge or NeoForge dedicated server, install the matching Chunky release in mods, restart, select the intended world and area, and start with chunky start. Use progress, pause and continue controls to fit generation into maintenance windows. Begin small, monitor real resource use and expand only when the server’s observed ETA, storage and stability make the larger area practical.
