Practice Roger Jr. as a close-range stance-and-throw character, but do not rely on frame traps or guaranteed punishes until you have verified them in the live game. Bandai Namco scheduled Roger Jr. for North American Season Pass 3 access on November 12, 2026, and general access on November 17, 2026. Those are announced dates, not confirmation that the release occurred exactly as planned. Before launch, build a matchup checklist from the official descriptions. After launch, reproduce each stance entry in Training mode, test every low, throw, block and Heat branch separately, and record what works in your current game version.

What you can know about Roger Jr. before launch

As of October 13, 2026, Roger Jr. had been revealed but was not yet generally playable. The official character announcement placed him in Season 3 and listed November 17, 2026 for general access; North American Season Pass 3 holders were scheduled to receive access on November 12. Because those dates were announced in advance, check the in-game character select screen and the latest patch notes before using any post-launch matchup advice.

Access group Announced date What it means for practice
North American Season Pass 3 holders November 12, 2026 Earlier access was announced, but verify availability in your region and current build.
All other players November 17, 2026 Scheduled general access; confirm the character is live before testing detailed counterplay.

The development overview gives you a useful strategic outline, not a finished punish chart. It says Roger Jr. compensates for short reach with strength at close range. It also identifies three important stance names: Astronauts, Rocket Stance and Bobbin Dance. The overview describes their purpose and several attack categories, but it does not provide a complete move list, startup values, frame advantage, hit levels for every branch or guaranteed escape sequence.

That distinction matters. You can prepare your recognition and recording drills now. You cannot responsibly label a move punishable, claim that a particular duck or sidestep is universal, or publish a frame table until you have checked the live move list and current patch.

This mode serves as an introduction to the gameplay of TEKKEN 8, allowing players to acquire basic knowledge, learn practical techniques, and enjoy a unique storyline and battles different from regular matches. .

Roger Jr.’s intended game plan

Close range is the starting assumption

The development team describes Roger Jr.’s basic plan as making up for short reach with close-range strength. In practical terms, begin your practice with Roger Jr. already near your character rather than at full-screen distance. You are training the situations where his stances and throws can influence your next decision, not testing long-range neutral in isolation.

Do not convert “short reach” into an exact range disadvantage. The official material establishes the design intention, but not the precise distance at which a particular jab, mid or launcher will miss. Measure those interactions yourself once the character is playable.

Stances create the decision points

The overview says Astronauts, Rocket Stance and Bobbin Dance are used to force mind games and pull opponents into Roger Jr.’s pace. Your first defensive task is therefore recognition: identify which stance has begun, how Roger Jr. entered it, and whether the situation is occurring during Heat. A correct response to the wrong stance is still a failed drill.

Rocket Stance: prepare for lows and throws

Rocket Stance is the clearest pre-release warning. The official description says it can be entered from relatively low-risk moves and gives access to low attacks and certain throws, including Whirling Punishment and Uluru Hurricane Bomb, with simplified inputs.

Practice this as a two-way decision rather than assuming that blocking low solves the stance. Record one Rocket Stance entry at a time, then test the low branch and each named throw branch independently. Only after you can identify the branches should you test fuzzy-guard ideas, throw breaks or movement. The overview does not establish the timing needed for any of those responses.

Astronauts: powerful follow-ups and block situations

Astronauts is described as a new stance with powerful follow-ups. The listed properties include attacks that retain advantage on block, Heat Engagers and an unbreakable throw. These descriptions tell you what to look for: some blocked follow-ups may leave Roger Jr. in control, while others may be intended to begin or extend Heat pressure.

Do not infer that every Astronauts attack is plus, safe or unbreakable. “Moves that keep advantage on block” applies to the moves identified by the developers, not automatically to the entire stance. In Training mode, document the exact move, whether it is high, mid or low when the game displays that information, and your tested response in the current version.

Heat changes the observation checklist

During Heat, the official overview says Roger Jr. can transition into Bobbin Dance and access high/mid offense. Heat therefore deserves its own recordings rather than being treated as a stronger version of the normal stance sequence. Note the moment Heat begins, whether Bobbin Dance appears immediately or after a transition, and which high/mid options follow.

The high/mid description is not a complete list of attacks or a promise that one defensive option covers both levels. Test the branches separately, then test what happens if you block, move, interrupt or attempt a throw break. Keep Heat recordings separate from ordinary Rocket Stance and Astronauts recordings so you do not confuse one state’s results with another’s.

What to prepare before Roger Jr. is playable

  1. Make a three-stance checklist. Write down Astronauts, Rocket Stance and Bobbin Dance. Leave space beside each name for the entry you observe, the visible animation cue, the follow-ups you confirm and the response that worked.
  2. Mark every transition shown in official material. Use the official trailer and development overview to identify when Roger Jr. appears to enter a stance. Treat the clips as recognition references, not proof of frame advantage or a guaranteed counter.
  3. Create separate Rocket Stance branches. Prepare entries for a low attack, Whirling Punishment and Uluru Hurricane Bomb. The point is to test the low-versus-throw decision tree, not to assume that the named moves have identical timing.
  4. Create a separate Astronauts block test. Record each follow-up that the live game exposes, paying special attention to attacks described as retaining advantage on block, Heat Engagers and the unbreakable throw.
  5. Create a Heat worksheet. Add a section for Bobbin Dance transitions and the high/mid offense described during Heat. Do not combine these results with normal stance results.
  6. Choose a consistent notation. For every recording, write the stance, entry move, branch, your defensive input and the result. Include the game version and date, because a later balance patch can change the outcome.

This preparation lets you start testing immediately when Roger Jr. becomes available without turning pre-release descriptions into unsupported matchup claims.

How to build the matchup lab in Training mode

Once Roger Jr. is selectable, use the game’s Training tools to reproduce one situation at a time. The exact menu labels and recording controls can change between versions, so follow the controls shown by your current build rather than an older tutorial.

  1. Set Roger Jr. as the opponent. Pick the character and stage you normally use for practice. Start at close range, since that is the range emphasized by the developers.
  2. Record one stance entry. Have Roger Jr. perform a single move or transition into Rocket Stance, Astronauts or Bobbin Dance. Do not record a full sequence yet; you need to recognize the entry before studying the mix-up.
  3. Replay the entry without defending. Watch the animation and listen for the timing cue. Your first goal is to identify the stance reliably, not to win the exchange.
  4. Add one branch per recording. Make separate recordings for the Rocket Stance low, Whirling Punishment and Uluru Hurricane Bomb. Use separate recordings for Astronauts follow-ups and the Heat-to-Bobbin Dance sequence.
  5. Test a neutral block first. Block without moving and note whether the attack is high, mid or low when the game identifies it. Record whether Roger Jr. remains in stance, leaves stance or appears to retain pressure. Do not call the result “plus” or “safe” unless you have verified the relevant frame data.
  6. Test movement and interruption separately. Try standing, crouching, sidewalking, backdash and an interrupt one at a time. A response that works against one recorded branch may fail against another.
  7. Test throw defense only after identification. Against the named throw branches, practice the appropriate throw-break input shown by your control scheme. Keep the result tied to that exact recording; the official overview does not establish a universal break timing.
  8. Repeat every test during Heat. Re-record the sequence with Heat active, including the Bobbin Dance transition and high/mid options. Heat can change the available offense, so normal-state conclusions should not be copied into the Heat worksheet.
  9. Verify in the current patch. Save the patch number and date with your notes. If a patch changes the animation, hit level, transition or frame outcome, retire the old recording and make a new one.

Drills that answer the important defensive questions

Drill 1: Can you recognize the entry?

Set the dummy to perform a neutral action, then occasionally enter one of the three named stances. Do not attack at first. Call out the stance before choosing a response. This separates visual recognition from defensive execution and exposes whether you are reacting to the entry or guessing from the character’s position.

  • In the new single-player mode ‘Arcade Quest’, players can create their own avatar and conquer their rivals in a variety of different arcades

Drill 2: Can you separate Rocket Stance’s low from its throws?

Use three independent recordings: the low, Whirling Punishment and Uluru Hurricane Bomb. Begin by blocking or defending against one branch at a time. Once you know the animations, randomize the recordings if your version allows it and measure how often you choose the correct response. A low block, a throw break and a standing defense are different skills; practicing them in one unstructured recording hides which one failed.

Drill 3: What happens after an Astronauts block?

For each Astronauts follow-up, test a stationary block, immediate movement and an attempted interruption. Record the result without extrapolating from one move to the entire stance. The developers specifically mention block-advantage follow-ups, Heat Engagers and an unbreakable throw, so these are the branches most likely to punish an automatic response.

Drill 4: Does Heat change your first decision?

Run the normal and Heat versions back to back. Identify whether Bobbin Dance appears, then test the described high/mid offense one branch at a time. If your first response changes when Heat is active, write that as a state-specific rule rather than a general Roger Jr. rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Drill 5: Check your range assumptions

After stance drills, reset to several distances and test the same entry. The official description says Roger Jr. has short reach but close-range strength; it does not specify a universal spacing at which his attacks fail. Your notes should therefore record the distance and the move, not simply “Roger Jr. cannot reach here.”

How to decide whether a response is reliable

  • Repeat it against the same recording. A one-time interruption may be a timing accident.
  • Repeat it against every branch. Be explicit if a response works against the low but loses to a throw, or works against one Astronauts follow-up but not another.
  • Test both players’ sides. Some visual cues or controller inputs feel different when the characters switch sides.
  • Check counter-hit and normal-hit outcomes. A response that succeeds only when Roger Jr. is not attacking is not a complete answer.
  • Write the build number beside the result. Stance transitions and frame outcomes can change after balance updates.
  • Use “tested” precisely. Say “this response worked against the recorded Rocket Stance low in version X” rather than claiming a universal counter unless the evidence supports it.

This method also prevents a common error: confusing a move that appears punishable with one that merely leaves Roger Jr. out of stance. Confirm the actual outcome in the live game before describing a punish.

Assuming every stance has the same answer

Rocket Stance’s low-and-throw description, Astronauts’ follow-ups and Heat’s Bobbin Dance offense serve different purposes. A response that is correct for one stance may be wrong for another.

Testing a full sequence too early

If you record entry, low, throw, Heat and movement in one long script, you will not know which branch defeated you. Isolate the entry first, then add one branch at a time.

Calling an unbreakable throw a normal throw

The official overview distinguishes an unbreakable throw among Astronauts’ options. Do not practice it as though a conventional throw break must always be available; verify the move’s actual properties in the live game.

Publishing universal counters before launch

No official material reviewed for this guide supplies frame data, startup values, complete punish windows or matchup statistics. Avoid “always,” “guaranteed” and exact punish claims until those facts are verified against the released character and current patch.

How to keep your notes useful after release

  • stance and entry move;
  • follow-up name, if the game identifies it;
  • hit level and throw status shown by the current training tools;
  • your input and the result;
  • distance, side of the screen and Heat state;
  • game version and test date.

When a patch changes a result, do not overwrite the old note without a date. Mark it obsolete and add the new test. This keeps older tournament footage or replay analysis from being mistaken for current advice.

What you need to play and practice

Bandai Namco lists TEKKEN 8 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, with physical and digital editions. You need a copy of the game on a supported platform and access to the character when your edition or release date permits it. The available material does not establish a requirement for a particular controller, accessory or additional software.

Bottom line for the matchup

Prepare for Roger Jr. by learning to identify Astronauts, Rocket Stance and Bobbin Dance, then build isolated recordings for Rocket Stance’s lows and named throws, Astronauts’ block-advantage and Heat-Engager follow-ups, and Heat’s Bobbin Dance high/mid offense. Treat every response as a hypothesis until it survives repeated testing in the released game and current patch. The official descriptions give you the correct practice categories; only live testing can supply the frame data, punish windows and dependable counterplay.
