Start with symmetry and a near-equilateral triangle: the two speakers and your listening seat should be roughly equal distances apart, with matching side-wall and furniture conditions. Put the tweeters at seated ear height, keep the direct path clear, begin with modest toe-in, and change only one variable at a time. The exact result depends on your room, speaker dispersion and manufacturer instructions, so treat every measurement as a starting point rather than a universal rule.

Build the stereo image from geometry first

High-end speakers cannot create a stable stereo stage if the room gives the left and right channels different acoustic conditions. Before moving furniture or adding treatment, choose a layout that is as symmetrical as the room allows. The speakers should face into the same volume of space, have similar distances to their side walls, and sit opposite comparable surfaces or furnishings.

Use a near-equilateral stereo triangle

Place the left speaker, right speaker and listening position at approximately equal distances. This is the baseline recommended by both Klipsch and Cambridge Audio because it gives each channel a similar arrival time and level at the listening seat. Measure from the acoustic center of each speaker—normally near the tweeter or the manufacturer’s stated reference point—to the listening position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A slightly narrower triangle can be useful if the center image sounds diffuse. Move both speakers inward by the same small amount rather than moving only one. If the triangle becomes too narrow, the stage may feel compressed and the speakers can become easier to localize as separate sources.

Use a tape measure or laser measure, then recheck the distances after every meaningful move. A difference of a few centimeters can be audible in a carefully balanced setup, particularly when one speaker is closer to a side wall than the other.

Choose the best wall and centerline

Begin with the wall that lets you place the speakers on a clear, centered line. Keep the left and right speakers in equivalent acoustic surroundings: similar side-wall distances, similar nearby furniture, and no large obstruction in front of just one cabinet. A window on one side and a thick curtain or bookcase on the other can change early reflections enough to shift the apparent center.

Center the listening seat on the line between the speakers. Do not assume the geometric center of the room is automatically the best seat; room modes can make that location bass-heavy or bass-light. The centerline is the starting reference for symmetry, while the final seat is chosen by listening.

Set boundary distance before fine toe-in

Walls affect both bass and reflections. Moving a speaker closer to a boundary generally increases boundary reinforcement and can make low frequencies sound fuller or boomy. Greater clearance usually reduces that buildup and gives early reflections more time to arrive, but it also consumes floor space and may reduce perceived bass in a small room.

Use the one-fifth rule as a starting point

Cambridge Audio’s placement guidance suggests beginning about one-fifth of the room dimension from each boundary. Treat this as a starting position, not a fixed law: the relevant dimension and the speaker’s bass alignment determine how useful it is in your room. Measure the clearance consistently for both speakers and then listen for even bass and a stable center image.

Respect model-specific minimums

Some speakers require more clearance. The 2016 manual for ADAM Audio’s SX monitors specifies at least 40 cm (16 inches) from surrounding walls. If your speaker manual gives a minimum distance, follow it instead of a generic room rule. Rear ports, passive radiators and boundary-sensitive bass tuning make model-to-model results different.

Pull both speakers away from corners first. A corner couples a cabinet to two boundaries and can exaggerate low frequencies while making one-note bass harder to distinguish. If the speakers must remain near a wall, use equal distances and adjust the listening seat as well as the cabinets.

Placement decision Starting point from the guidance Likely effect
Speaker-to-seat geometry Near-equilateral triangle Balanced channel timing and a more stable phantom center
Room-boundary clearance About one-fifth of the room dimension, as suggested by Cambridge Audio A practical first position for balancing bass reinforcement and reflections
ADAM SX monitor clearance At least 40 cm (16 inches) from surrounding walls, per the 2016 manual Minimum clearance specified for that monitor family
Listening distance for Jubilee loudspeakers 12–15 feet in Klipsch’s current placement guidance A model-specific listening-distance recommendation, not a universal stereo rule

Put tweeters on the listening axis

The tweeter should be approximately level with your ears when you are seated in your normal listening position. This keeps the direct sound on the intended vertical axis and makes the speaker’s designed dispersion more predictable. If a cabinet is too high or too low, angle it toward your ears rather than accepting a blocked or sharply off-axis path.

Keep the line between each tweeter and your ears unobstructed. A television, high console, plant, equipment rack or chair back can reflect or absorb one channel differently from the other. Even when the obstruction is not directly in front of the tweeter, it can alter the first reflections that help define image width and depth.

Why dedicated stands help bookshelf speakers

Dedicated stands make it easier to place bookshelf speakers at the correct height and at the same height on both sides. Cambridge Audio describes them as “probably the single best upgrade for a bookshelf speaker” because they put the speakers at the right height, reduce rattles and free you from the compromises of shelves or furniture.

Place each stand on a stable, level surface. Check that the cabinet cannot rock, and make sure both speakers are oriented identically. Shelves can work when stands are impossible, but avoid hollow or loose furniture that vibrates, rattles or forces one speaker to sit higher than the other. The improvement comes from repeatable geometry and mechanical stability, not from a particular stand brand.

Choose toe-in for your listening pattern

Toe-in is the horizontal angle toward the listening seat. It changes the balance between direct sound, side-wall reflections and the number of seats that receive a convincing image.

Start around 10–15 degrees

Cambridge Audio Head of Acoustics Ollie Marshall gives 10 to 15 degrees as a useful typical starting range. Begin with both speakers turned in by the same amount, then listen from the primary seat. Avoid pointing them straight at your head as a first move; Marshall notes that the most convincing imaging is often achieved with some toe-in, but that direct aiming is rarely the best default.

Trade hotspot focus for wider coverage

DALI’s guidance describes the trade-off clearly: more toe-in typically optimizes stereo performance at the hotspot, while less toe-in produces a more rounded presentation suited to shared listening. More angle can tighten a vocal or instrument at the center and reduce the contribution of the nearest side wall. Less angle can make the stage more forgiving when several people sit across the sofa.

Do not force toe-in on a speaker designed for wide dispersion. DALI’s wide-dispersion designs may work best with no toe-in. A direct, equilateral-triangle aim corresponds to about 30 degrees per speaker, but that geometry is a reference point rather than an instruction for every model. Follow the speaker manual when it specifies an intended listening window.

Toe-in choice Starting angle or condition Best suited to
Gentle toe-in 10–15 degrees A primary listening seat needing a focused but natural center image
Direct equilateral-triangle aim About 30 degrees per speaker A geometric reference for direct aiming, subject to the speaker’s dispersion design
Minimal or no toe-in Speakers facing more forward Wider shared listening or speakers engineered for broad dispersion
More toe-in Increase in small, matched increments A tighter hotspot and less side-wall contribution

Follow this setup sequence

  1. Select the wall and centerline. Choose the orientation that gives both speakers similar side-wall distances and comparable nearby furniture. Remove objects that block either direct path.
  2. Mark the listening seat. Use the seat where you normally listen, not a temporary position at the back of the room. Center it between the speakers initially.
  3. Place the speakers as a matched pair. Set them at equal distances from the centerline and begin with a near-equilateral triangle. If the room is narrow, start slightly narrower rather than forcing the cabinets against side walls.
  4. Set the height. Put both tweeters near seated ear height. Angle the cabinets toward your ears if their design or furniture leaves them above or below the listening axis.
  5. Establish wall clearance. Pull the cabinets away from corners and hard boundaries. Try Cambridge Audio’s one-fifth room-dimension starting rule, while observing any model-specific minimum such as the 40 cm (16-inch) requirement in the ADAM SX manual.
  6. Apply modest toe-in. Start near 10–15 degrees, with equal angles left and right. Keep the speakers aimed consistently relative to the seat.
  7. Use a familiar recording. Choose a vocal or acoustic track you know well. Listen for a centered voice, stable instrument positions, even bass notes and a coherent stage rather than simply maximum loudness.
  8. Change one variable. Adjust only speaker spacing, listening distance, wall clearance or toe-in in a single trial. Move both speakers together and use small increments so you can identify what changed.
  9. Record and mark the result. Write down the measurement and your listening impression. Put masking tape on the floor around the best cabinet and stand positions.

Repeat the process with several familiar recordings. A position that flatters one bass-heavy track can make another recording thin, and a dramatic effect from one seat may disappear when you move a few inches.

Find the compromise between bass and imaging

Room modes mean the seat with the strongest bass is often not the seat with the best stereo image. Cambridge Audio explicitly notes that placement is a compromise between those two goals. A seat near a wall may sound powerful but less even; a more central position may improve timing and width while reducing the amount of low-frequency reinforcement.

Move the seat before adding electronic equalization. Shift it forward or backward in small increments while keeping the speaker triangle unchanged, then compare the consistency of bass notes and the solidity of the phantom center. Once you find a useful listening zone, make the speaker adjustments around that seat rather than chasing bass with one cabinet only.

Never correct an asymmetrical room by moving only one speaker unless the geometry is already impossible. Unequal distances alter level, arrival time and reflection patterns. Preserve left-right symmetry first, then accept a measured compromise in bass if necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use room treatment after placement

Placement and symmetry should come before acoustic treatment. Rugs, curtains and upholstered furniture can reduce the brightness created by floors, windows and bare walls. They are especially useful when the room sounds echoey after the speakers are correctly positioned.

Control early reflections

Hard side walls, glass and large bare surfaces return energy soon after the direct sound. If the stereo image is vague or overly bright, add soft furnishings or suitable absorption at the strongest reflection areas while preserving the same treatment on both sides where possible. Do not cover every surface indiscriminately; the goal is controlled reflections, not a lifeless room.

Address uneven bass last

If low frequencies remain uneven after moving the speakers and seat, consider bass traps or other low-frequency treatment. Treatment cannot compensate for a speaker trapped in a corner or a seat at a room-mode maximum, so revisit geometry before buying panels or traps. A rug or curtain can help higher-frequency reflections but will not solve deep bass buildup on its own.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you hear First checks Adjustment to try
Vocals wander left or right Speaker distances, toe-in angles, seat centerline and unequal nearby surfaces Re-measure from each speaker to the seat; restore matched spacing and angles
Center image is vague Triangle too wide, excessive side-wall reflection or blocked direct path Try a slightly narrower triangle, modestly increase toe-in, and clear the tweeter path
Sound is narrow or only works in one seat Too much toe-in or a speaker with a limited listening window Reduce toe-in in equal increments and test a wider seating area
Bass is boomy Cabinets too close to corners or walls; seat located at a room-mode maximum Increase boundary clearance where the manual allows, then move the seat and compare

Recheck the setup whenever the room changes

Adding a bookcase, television, curtains, shelves or a large sofa changes reflections and sometimes forces a different seat. Recheck the triangle, tweeter height, wall clearance and toe-in after substantial furniture changes. Keep the tape marks and your measurement notes so you can return to a known position instead of starting over.

Make changes in daylight and at a moderate listening level. Loud playback can make bass seem more impressive and can hide small image shifts. Use recordings with centered vocals, sparse acoustic instruments and consistent low-frequency notes so you can judge image stability, tonal balance and bass evenness separately.

How to adapt the method to different rooms

Small or narrow rooms

Prioritize the unobstructed direct path and equal side-wall distances. You may need a slightly narrower triangle and less clearance than the one-fifth guideline, but do not violate the speaker’s published minimum. Keep the listening seat away from a wall when possible, then tune the speaker spacing around it.

Large rooms

Use the manufacturer’s recommended listening distance where one exists. Klipsch’s current Jubilee guidance, for example, specifies 12–15 feet for those loudspeakers. That figure applies to that model and is not a general requirement for all high-end speakers. In a large room, maintain the triangle and ensure that furniture does not create a strong asymmetrical reflection close to one cabinet.

Open-plan or asymmetrical rooms

Choose the orientation that gives the two speakers the most similar immediate environment, even if that means the system is not centered in the entire building footprint. A partial wall, open doorway or kitchen area can make perfect symmetry impossible. Match what you can near the speakers and seat, then use modest toe-in and treatment to reduce the largest reflection imbalance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What matters most when you have limited space

  • First: equal left-right spacing and an unobstructed direct path.
  • Second: tweeters at seated ear height and stable support.
  • Third: enough wall clearance to respect the manual and avoid corner buildup.
  • Fourth: toe-in tuned to your seating pattern and the speaker’s dispersion.
  • Fifth: rugs, curtains, absorption or bass treatment after the geometry is repeatable.

This order prevents an expensive treatment purchase from masking a basic placement error. It also makes every later adjustment easier to evaluate because the reference geometry is known.

Final listening check

With the speakers marked and measurements recorded, play familiar material from the primary seat and one or two adjacent seats. A successful setup keeps a vocal or lead instrument centered, preserves believable width without a hole in the middle, produces bass that is strong without one-note emphasis, and remains coherent when you move slightly. If a trade-off remains, favor the arrangement that is balanced and repeatable across your normal listening area. As Klipsch cautions, every room, speaker and component setup is different, so there is no one-size-fits-all solution.
