A subwoofer usually does not need to point at the listener. If yours is front-firing, aiming its grille toward the couch is a sensible starting arrangement, but turning the cabinet is unlikely to fix uneven bass on its own. Room placement, boundaries and the listening position usually matter more; follow the subwoofer’s manual for driver and port clearance.
Does a subwoofer have to face the listening position?
No. Bass from a typical subwoofer is difficult to localize, so front-firing, side-facing and down-firing designs can all work without pointing directly at the seating area. Teufel Support puts it plainly: “No, a subwoofer does not have to face the listening position.” Teufel Support
For a front-firing model, facing the grille toward the main seating area is an easy, practical default, as Velodyne’s placement guide advises. Treat it as a convenient arrangement, not a universal acoustic rule. Keep rear controls accessible, too. Velodyne Acoustics

A down-firing subwoofer is designed to radiate toward the floor. Use its supplied feet or intended base so the driver has the clearance it was designed for and the cabinet stays stable. The available guidance does not establish a general sound-quality advantage for down-firing over front-firing models.

Why placement matters more than direction
Room dimensions, walls, furniture and the listener’s seat affect how bass builds up or fades at different spots. The same subwoofer can sound strong in one place and weak or uneven a short distance away. Genelec’s placement guidance discusses the effect of room modes, while Dolby and manufacturers offer starting locations rather than a position that works in every room. Genelec Dolby
A wall or corner can increase bass output, but more output does not necessarily mean smoother or more accurate bass. Boundary placement may also emphasize room modes, making bass boomy or uneven. If the level is too strong or weak at the seat, test another subwoofer location or adjust the seat before changing direction alone. Klipsch Support

How to find a good location in your room
Start with the model manual. As initial options for one subwoofer, Dolby suggests a front-wall position roughly halfway between the center and either side; Genelec describes a front-wall position slightly off the room’s left-right center axis. These are starting points, not fixed rules.

- Check the cabinet requirements. Follow the manual’s instructions for driver clearance, feet, ports, stability and ventilation. Do not block a port; Klipsch advises leaving airflow space at the port exit.
- Use the subwoofer crawl to compare spots. Temporarily put the subwoofer at the usual listening seat and play material with steady bass. Listen at likely subwoofer locations around the room and note where the bass sounds smooth and strong. Klipsch and PreSonus describe this listening-position method; Teufel calls it the subwoofer crawl. PreSonus Support Teufel Support
- Move the subwoofer to the promising spot. Return to the listening seat, listen again, and make small adjustments to its position. A location that sounds good near the cabinet may not sound balanced from the seat.
- Recalibrate after placement. Rerun your receiver’s setup or room correction after moving the subwoofer. If your system provides DSP controls, use them to address remaining response problems rather than assuming a different driver direction will solve them.
Clearance and furniture can change the result
Leave the port unobstructed and check the manual for the required space around it. If the bass sounds boomy, try moving the cabinet rather than simply turning it. Avoid putting a subwoofer inside a cabinet or shelf unless its manufacturer explicitly supports that setup: resonating furniture can affect bass transmission. Klipsch Support Teufel Support
