On PC, use GTAV’s built-in Self Radio station: place non-DRM MP3, WMA, or M4A files in DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VUser Music, scan the folder in Pause Menu > Settings > Audio, then choose Self Radio from the radio wheel. The same method works in GTAV and GTA Online on PC.
PlayStation consoles do not use that PC station. On PS4 or PS5, play Spotify through the console while a compatible game is running; on PS5, PlayStation also documents playback from a USB drive. Xbox-specific background-music steps are not covered here because a current official procedure was not verified.

Which method should you use?
Your platform determines whether your music becomes an actual GTA radio station or simply plays through the console’s audio controls.

If you want songs selectable from GTA’s own radio wheel, the documented route is Self Radio on PC. If you play on PlayStation, use the console music controls instead.

Set up Self Radio on PC
1. Find the User Music folder
- Open Windows Documents.
- Open Rockstar Games, then GTA V, then User Music.
The usual location is DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VUser Music. Windows setups can redirect Documents to another location, so navigate through your actual Documents folder rather than assuming it is on the C: drive. The folder name is GTA V, even when you are launching GTA Online from the same installation.
If User Music is missing, start GTAV once, close it, and check the Rockstar Games/GTA V folders again. Do not create a differently named folder such as “Custom Radio”; Self Radio looks for the User Music location.
2. Add compatible audio files
Copy your music into User Music. Rockstar Support lists these formats:

Files must be non-DRM. A song that requires an app, account, or license check to play is not a suitable Self Radio file. If a track is in another format, convert or obtain a locally playable copy before scanning; merely changing the filename extension does not convert the audio.
You do not have to copy every file. Rockstar also supports shortcuts in User Music that point to folders containing your music. Shortcuts can keep the game folder small and let you maintain one library elsewhere. The shortcut must resolve to a folder that remains available when the game scans it; a disconnected drive or cloud-only placeholder will not provide a readable local file.
Use ordinary filenames and keep the files readable by your Windows account. Self Radio reads the audio files it can access; it does not download songs from a streaming subscription.
3. Scan the folder in the game
- Launch GTAV or GTA Online on PC.
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Choose Settings, then Audio.
- Select Perform Quick Scan for Music or Perform Full Scan for Music.
A Quick Scan checks for music using the existing library information. A Full Scan is the better choice after you have moved a large collection, changed shortcut targets, or removed and replaced files. Rockstar also provides an Auto-scan setting: when enabled, the game can perform a Quick Scan at startup.
Scanning is required. Copying a song into User Music while the game is running does not make it appear instantly in the station; run a scan after the copy operation and then return to gameplay.
4. Select Self Radio
Enter a vehicle or use the game’s radio controls, open the radio wheel, and select Self Radio. The station appears alongside the game’s other radio stations after the scan has found at least one compatible file.

Self Radio is available in both GTAV and GTA Online on PC according to Rockstar’s support instructions. It is a game-integrated station rather than a separate music player window, so the game controls the station selection and playback mode.
Choose the Self Radio playback mode
Self Radio has three modes in Settings > Audio. Select the mode that matches how much control you want while driving.

Folder order matters only in Sequential mode. In Radio mode, the station adds in-game adverts and DJ-style banter, and tracks cannot be skipped. Sequential and Shuffle let you skip, so they are more practical when you need to move past a song immediately.
When Self Radio does not show a song
Work through these checks in order rather than repeatedly restarting the game.
Check the file type and DRM
- Confirm the file is MP3, WMA, or M4A.
- Confirm it is a locally playable, non-DRM file.
- Open the file in a normal Windows music player. If it cannot play there without a service login, Self Radio is unlikely to read it.
An unsupported extension, a protected download, or a file that is only an online placeholder can all leave the station unchanged.
Check the exact folder
Verify that the file is inside the real DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VUser Music path, or inside a folder reached by a shortcut placed there. A common mistake is putting songs in the game’s installation directory, a Downloads folder, or a similarly named folder under another Windows user account.
Run a Full Scan
Return to Pause Menu > Settings > Audio and choose Perform Full Scan for Music. Use this after changing a shortcut, replacing files, or correcting the folder location. If Auto-scan is enabled, it performs a Quick Scan at startup, but that does not remove the need for a Full Scan when the library has changed substantially.
Check whether the shortcut target is available
If you used shortcuts, open each target folder in Windows before launching the game. An external drive that is unplugged, a network location that is unavailable, or a cloud file that has not been downloaded locally cannot be scanned reliably.
Confirm that you are listening to Self Radio
The game will continue playing another station if the radio wheel selection did not change. Select Self Radio explicitly, then test a known-compatible file. Remember that the station’s mode affects behavior: Radio mode cannot skip, while Sequential and Shuffle can.

Play your music on PS4 while playing GTA 5
PS4 uses its console-level music feature rather than the PC Self Radio station. PlayStation documents Spotify playback while a compatible game is running.

- Start GTA 5 or another compatible game.
- Hold the PS button to open the Quick Menu.
- Choose Music, then Spotify, and select the track or playlist you want.
The music is mixed by the console while the game runs; it does not appear as a named station in GTA’s radio wheel. PlayStation’s PS4 instructions also note that playback is unavailable when you are streaming games, so local gameplay and cloud-streamed gameplay do not have identical behavior. Service and account availability can vary by region.
Play your music on PS5 while playing GTA 5
Spotify playback
On PS5, PlayStation provides Spotify playback through the Control Center:
- Open GTA 5.
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Choose Music.
- Select Spotify, then choose a track, album, playlist, or podcast.
As on PS4, this audio comes from the console’s music feature. It is not imported into Self Radio and will not add a station to the GTA radio wheel. Whether Spotify appears and which content can play depends on your account, region, and the service’s current support for the game session.
USB playback
PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ also documents listening to music from a USB drive and lists MP3, FLAC, and AAC files. This gives you a local-file option if you do not want to stream from Spotify. Connect a USB drive containing supported files, then use the current PS5 media and USB playback instructions to open them while GTA 5 is running.

USB playback remains a PS5 console function: files will play through the system’s audio controls, not as a custom GTA radio station. The exact media-player screens and USB requirements can change with PS5 system software, so follow the current PlayStation menu labels on your console rather than applying the PC User Music path.
What about Xbox?
The PC User Music folder and Self Radio scan are not Xbox instructions. The available official material does not establish a current Xbox procedure for local files or background music while GTA 5 runs, so button-by-button directions would risk sending you to outdated menus.
If you play on Xbox, distinguish three separate questions before following advice found elsewhere:
- Does the proposed method use an Xbox-supported background audio app?
- Does it play local files, a streaming service, or both?
- Does it create an in-game GTA station, or merely mix audio over the game?
Check current Xbox support documentation for your console model, system version, region, and chosen music service. Do not copy the Windows User Music folder to an Xbox and expect Self Radio to scan it.

Self Radio versus console playback
The practical difference is integration. Self Radio is indexed by GTA and selected with the radio wheel, while Spotify and USB playback are controlled by the console.

PC checklist
- Use the Windows Documents folder for the active user account.
- Open

PS5 checklist
- For Spotify, press PS > Music and choose Spotify.
- For local files, use a USB drive with a format listed by PlayStation: MP3, FLAC, or AAC.
- Follow the current PS5 USB-media instructions for opening files.
- Keep in mind that both methods play through the console, not Self Radio.
Further questions and practical distinctions
Can I use songs from a streaming subscription in Self Radio?
Not directly. Self Radio reads files stored locally or reached through a folder shortcut. A streaming catalog remains inside its service and does not become a readable MP3, WMA, or M4A file merely because you can listen to it offline in an app. Use a legitimately obtained, non-DRM local copy that Rockstar’s scanner can access.
Do I need to scan every time I start the game?
No. Once the library is indexed, you can enable Auto-scan so the game performs a Quick Scan at startup. Scan again after adding, removing, replacing, or relocating music. A Full Scan is the safer reset when many files changed or a shortcut now points somewhere else.
Why does my playlist order look random?
Check the selected mode. Sequential follows folder order, while Shuffle and Radio choose tracks randomly. Radio also inserts adverts and DJ-style presentation and deliberately prevents skipping. If you need to move through an ordered album and skip unwanted tracks, use Sequential instead.
Can I use a shortcut instead of copying music?
Yes. Rockstar supports shortcuts placed in User Music that point to folders containing the audio. This is useful when your main library is stored elsewhere, but the destination must be connected and locally readable whenever the game scans it.
Does Self Radio work in GTA Online?
Rockstar’s support instructions cover both GTAV and GTA Online on PC. The same User Music folder, supported formats, scan commands, and playback modes apply.
Is there a PlayStation version of Self Radio?
No documented PlayStation equivalent appears in the current setup instructions. Spotify on PS4 and PS5, or local USB playback on PS5, runs through console controls and does not add a station to GTA’s radio wheel. Rockstar’s older 2015 Newswire answer called the PC feature a “fully featured and properly integrated radio station”; that wording is historical context, not a current promise about every console feature.
Does the PC folder path have to be on the C: drive?
No. Documents can be redirected by Windows. Start with the active Windows Documents folder and follow Rockstar Games > GTA V > User Music there. The important part is using the folder associated with the Windows account that runs the game, not a duplicate folder under another profile.

For a true custom station inside GTA 5, use Self Radio on PC: place non-DRM MP3, WMA, or M4A files in User Music, scan them, and select Sequential, Shuffle, or Radio. PS4 and PS5 can play Spotify during compatible gameplay, and PS5 can also play supported files from USB, but those console options stay outside GTA’s radio wheel.
