To play MP3s you already own through Android Auto, keep the files on your Android phone and open them with a media player that supports both local music and Android Auto. Installing a phone player alone does not guarantee it will appear on the car’s display: the app must also be compatible with Android Auto.
What you need to play local music files in the car
- Your MP3 files on the phone: Make sure the tracks are available to the player you choose.
- A player that handles local music: An app needs to support playback from files stored on your device, not only streaming.
- Android Auto compatibility: The player must support Android Auto for its media controls and app experience to appear on the car display.
- A compatible phone and vehicle or stereo: Google describes both wired and wireless Android Auto connections; availability depends on the devices and setup. See Google’s Android Auto setup overview.
Google’s guidance explains that compatible media apps can be opened from the car display and used with voice commands. Some media apps may require a subscription or premium account. Google’s guide to listening to media and its Android Auto app guidance are useful checks before installing a player.
Choose an Android Auto music player that supports your files
Poweramp is one example identified by its developer as supporting local-library playback, including MP3, as well as Android Auto. Those are the vendor’s stated features, not an independent test, and they do not establish exactly how a particular collection will appear on your car screen. Check the app’s current feature and payment details before relying on it: Poweramp’s official site.

When comparing players, check these points rather than assuming that one kind of support implies another:

- Local MP3 playback: Can the app play music files stored on your phone?
- Android Auto support: Is the app compatible with Android Auto, so its car-display experience is available?
- Library browsing: Does it organize music in a way that suits you, such as by tags, albums, playlists, or folders?
- Payment requirements: Are the features you need free, or do they require a subscription or premium account?
Android Auto compatibility does not prove an app can play local files, and local-file playback does not prove an app supports Android Auto. Verify both for the specific player.

Connect your phone and find your music
- Check compatibility first. Confirm that your phone and vehicle or stereo support Android Auto. Google’s setup overview covers wired and wireless connections.
- Choose a compatible local-music player. Check that the app supports both local-library playback and Android Auto. Review whether the features you need require payment.
- Make sure the MP3s are available to the app. Open the player on your phone and confirm that it can access and play the tracks you want.
- Connect Android Auto. Follow the setup for your vehicle and phone. For a wired connection, Google lists a high-quality USB cable in its guidance; use a data-capable cable with connectors that fit your devices. A cable is not needed for a wireless connection.
- Open the player on the car display. Select the compatible media app and use its available browsing controls or voice commands to choose music.
If your MP3s do not appear on the car screen
- The player is missing from Android Auto: Recheck that the specific app is compatible with Android Auto. Having it installed on the phone is not enough.
- The app appears, but your tracks do not: Confirm that the files are available to the player and that the player supports local-file playback.
- A feature is unavailable: Check the app’s payment requirements; some media apps require a subscription or premium account.
- The problem is specific to the app: Consult the app developer’s troubleshooting guidance. Google directs users to the developer for app-specific issues.
- A wired connection does not work: Check the cable and the phone-to-car setup. Cable advice applies to wired Android Auto, not wireless connections.
