To play an Xbox game on a PC, use a compatible Windows 10 or 11 computer, open the Xbox PC app, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or the Game Pass subscription, and install a PC-supported title from your library or the current PC Game Pass catalog. Xbox Play Anywhere can provide both the Xbox and PC versions of participating digital games, while Game Pass provides access only to games included in the current plan and catalog. A console game without a PC version cannot be installed through either service.

Choose the right way to play

Xbox games reach a Windows PC through three different routes. They are related, but they do not grant the same rights.

Route What you get What must be true
Xbox Play Anywhere A participating digital game can be played on Xbox and PC. Supported saves and achievements follow the Xbox gamertag. The game must carry the Xbox Play Anywhere designation, have a PC version that meets your hardware requirements, and be owned by the signed-in account.
PC Game Pass Access to eligible PC games while they remain in the current catalog and your subscription is active. Your plan must include PC access, the game must be in the current PC catalog, and the Windows device must be compatible. Each game can be played on one device at a time.
Cloud gaming A supported game is streamed to the PC instead of being installed locally. Cloud eligibility depends on the title, subscription, device, internet connection, and region. Service terms and supported libraries change.

Microsoft does not treat every Xbox console game as a PC game. Start by checking the specific title, not just the Xbox logo on its store page.

Check the game before installing anything

Confirm that a PC version exists

Open the game’s Microsoft Store or Xbox listing and look for PC availability. A console-only title will not appear as an installable PC game simply because you own it on Xbox. If the listing has separate console and PC requirements, use the PC requirements as the deciding test.

Look for the Play Anywhere designation

Xbox Play Anywhere applies to participating digital games. Microsoft says to look for the Xbox Play Anywhere icon in the Store or consult the program’s full list. Do not assume that a physical disc, a game shared from another account, or every first-party release qualifies.

For a qualifying title, the entitlement is associated with the Microsoft account that owns it. Microsoft Support describes the save behavior this way: “When you play an XBOX Play Anywhere game, your game progress is saved on with your gamertag so you can pick up where you left on when you log into another device.” That synchronization applies to supported Play Anywhere games; it is not a promise of cross-save for every Xbox and PC title.

Check the current Game Pass catalog

PC Game Pass is a catalog benefit, not a license to every Xbox game. Search the current catalog in the Xbox PC app and verify that the title is marked for PC. A game may leave the catalog, be available on console but not PC, or be offered only through a higher plan or cloud play. Catalog membership and plan benefits can change, so check the listing immediately before installing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the account that holds the entitlement

Sign in to Windows, the Xbox PC app, and the Microsoft Store with the account connected to the purchase or subscription. If the app shows a game as unavailable even though you own it, account mismatch is one of the first things to check. A different Xbox profile on the same computer does not automatically transfer a digital purchase.

Check Windows and hardware requirements

The Xbox PC app and the individual game have separate requirements. Meeting the app requirement only means the launcher can run; it does not guarantee that a demanding game will perform well.

  • Operating system: Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or later, according to Xbox’s PC guidance checked October 13, 2026.
  • App storage: At least 150 MB for the Xbox PC app, plus the much larger space required by the games you install.
  • Display: A display capable of 720p or higher.
  • Windows mode: Windows S mode must be switched off to use the Xbox PC app. Switching out of S mode is a Windows change and is generally permanent, so read Microsoft’s warning on your device before confirming it.
  • Game hardware: Check the publisher’s minimum and recommended CPU, graphics, memory, DirectX, and storage requirements for each title. Individual games can require substantially more powerful hardware than the launcher.

To check your Windows version, open Settings > System > About and read the Windows specifications. To check free space, open Settings > System > Storage. If the game’s installer offers a choice of drive, leave enough additional room for updates and temporary installation files rather than filling the drive to its limit.

Install and play through the Xbox PC app

The Xbox PC app is the normal local-install route for PC games. It is pre-installed on most Windows 11 PCs; search for Xbox from the Windows Start menu to see whether it is already available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open or install the app. Search Windows for Xbox. If it is not installed, obtain the Xbox PC app through Microsoft’s official Windows app distribution and complete the installation. Allow the app to update before searching for a game.
  2. Sign in. Use the Microsoft/Xbox account that owns the digital game or has the PC Game Pass subscription. If the Store and Xbox app show different accounts, sign out and correct the mismatch before attempting an install.
  3. Find the title. Use the app’s search field, open My Library for owned games, or browse the Game Pass catalog. Read the platform labels carefully: select the PC edition rather than a console-only listing.
  4. Check requirements and entitlement. Open the game page, confirm that it is available to your account, and compare the listed PC requirements with your computer. For an owned game, verify the Play Anywhere icon if you expect the console and PC versions to share an entitlement.
  5. Choose Install. Select an available storage drive when prompted and allow the download to finish. Large games can take considerable time and bandwidth; do not close the app or put the computer to sleep if that interrupts downloads on your setup.
  6. Launch from the library. When installation completes, select Play. The game may install its own updates, sign-in component, or graphics configuration the first time it starts.

Game files are installed locally in this route, so you need enough free disk space for the complete PC build and later patches. Uninstalling the game removes the local files but does not remove an owned Play Anywhere entitlement or cancel a Game Pass subscription.

Use Xbox Play Anywhere across Xbox and PC

Play Anywhere is useful when you want one participating digital purchase to cover both platforms. Xbox describes eligible games as playable on PC, Xbox console, and supported gaming handhelds “at no additional cost.” The important qualifier is eligible: the icon and current listing determine whether a particular game is included.

How the cross-device handoff works

  1. Buy or redeem the digital game with the Microsoft account you use on both devices.
  2. Install the PC version through the Xbox PC app and use the same account on the Xbox console.
  3. Connect each device to the internet so the game can synchronize its account data.
  4. Start the game on the second device and select the same Xbox profile. A supported save can then be continued from the point recorded by the gamertag.

Keep the account consistent. Signing into the PC with a different Microsoft account can make an eligible game appear unowned and can show a different save profile. Also distinguish Play Anywhere synchronization from multiplayer cross-play: a title can support one without universally supporting the other.

What the Play Anywhere icon does not mean

  • It does not turn a console-only game into a PC game.
  • It does not guarantee that every edition, expansion, or physical copy is covered.
  • It does not remove the need to meet the PC game’s hardware requirements.
  • It does not guarantee cross-save for games outside the Play Anywhere program.

Xbox reported more than 1,000 Play Anywhere games in a July 28, 2025 Xbox Wire update. That was a dated catalog count, not a permanent total; consult the current list when checking a new title.

Play PC Game Pass games

PC Game Pass follows the same app workflow but changes how you receive the game. Instead of owning a permanent digital license, you access games included in the current PC catalog while your subscription and the game’s catalog listing remain valid.

Xbox Wireless Controller – Black
  • Compatible with Xbox One X, Xbox One S, Xbox One, Windows 10
  • Includes Bluetooth technology for gaming on Windows 10 PCs and tablets
  • Stay on target with textured grip
  • Get up to twice the wireless range compared to previous Xbox One controllers (tested using the Xbox One S console)
  • Experience the enhanced comfort and feel of the new Xbox wireless controller
  1. Confirm that your subscription includes PC Game Pass access and that the title is currently listed for PC.
  2. Open the Xbox PC app and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with that subscription.
  3. Open the game’s page and read the platform, system-requirement, and availability labels.
  4. Select Install, choose a drive, and wait for the local download to complete.
  5. Launch the game from the Xbox app while signed in to the subscribing account.

Microsoft states that each Game Pass game can be played on one device at a time. If another PC is actively running the same title under that account, close the session there before starting a new one. If a title leaves the catalog, you may need to purchase it or stop playing it through Game Pass; an installed copy does not create permanent ownership.

When a Game Pass title is also marked Play Anywhere, the two concepts still answer different questions. Play Anywhere describes the entitlement and supported platforms for an eligible digital game. Game Pass describes temporary catalog access. Check both labels if you want to move between a subscription copy and an owned copy.

Use cloud gaming instead of installing

Cloud gaming streams a supported game to your PC, so the complete game does not have to be downloaded to local storage. It is a separate path from installing through the Xbox PC app and has stricter eligibility variables.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to verify

  • Your current Game Pass plan includes cloud gaming for the title you want.
  • The specific game is cloud-enabled; not every catalog or owned game is streamable.
  • Your PC, browser or app, and network connection meet the service’s current requirements.
  • Cloud gaming is available in your country or region.

In a July 2025 Xbox announcement, Xbox said Game Pass Ultimate members could stream more than 250 select games they owned through the Xbox PC app in the 28 countries where Xbox Cloud Gaming was supported at that time. Treat those numbers and the Ultimate requirement as date-specific service information, not a universal current rule. Recheck the Xbox app and current Xbox service terms for today’s supported regions, plans, and owned-game list.

Typical cloud-play steps

  1. Open the Xbox PC app and sign in to the eligible account.
  2. Open the cloud gaming section rather than the install button for a local copy.
  3. Select a title that shows a cloud-play option and confirm that your plan and region are eligible.
  4. Connect a supported controller or use the input method shown by the game. Controller and keyboard support varies by title.
  5. Start streaming and allow the service to establish a session. Picture quality and responsiveness depend on the network path as well as the PC.

Cloud play avoids a large download, but it does not bypass account, catalog, region, or device restrictions. If the cloud button is missing, use the title page’s availability information rather than assuming the app is malfunctioning.

Keyboard, mouse, and controller support

A controller is optional for the Xbox PC app itself. Many PC games support keyboard and mouse, while racing, fighting, platform, and other controller-focused games may be easier with an Xbox wireless controller or another compatible gamepad. Check the individual game’s input-support notes before buying an accessory or troubleshooting controls.

If a controller is connected but the game ignores it, close and reopen the game after pairing, check Windows’ Bluetooth or USB connection, and review the title’s control settings. Some games accept only one input type during a session or require the controller to be connected before launch.

Troubleshoot common problems

The game is missing from the library

  • Confirm that the Xbox app and Microsoft Store use the same Microsoft account.
  • Search the current PC catalog rather than relying on a console library view.
  • Check the Play Anywhere icon if you are relying on a console purchase.
  • Verify that the game has not left Game Pass or changed regional availability.

The Install button is unavailable

  • Check that the title has a PC version and that your Windows version is 22H2 or later.
  • Leave Windows S mode before using the Xbox PC app.
  • Check free storage on the selected drive and the game’s minimum hardware requirements.
  • Install pending Windows, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app updates, then sign in again.

The game installs but will not run

  • Compare your CPU, GPU, memory, graphics API, and operating-system version with the publisher’s minimum requirements.
  • Free additional disk space for updates and verify that the installation drive is healthy and accessible.
  • Restart the Xbox app and the PC after updates have completed.
  • Use the game publisher’s support instructions for title-specific launch errors; the Xbox app cannot compensate for unsupported hardware.

Progress is not appearing on the other device

  • Make sure the game is a Play Anywhere title or otherwise documents cross-save support.
  • Use the same Xbox gamertag and Microsoft account on both devices.
  • Connect the original device to the internet and allow the game to finish saving before switching.
  • Do not infer that a non-Play Anywhere game will synchronize merely because it is available on both Xbox and PC.

Cloud play is unavailable

  • Check the current plan, region, device, and title eligibility.
  • Look for an install option if the game is supported locally but not through the cloud.
  • Test the network connection and close other high-bandwidth activity.
  • Remember that the July 2025 list of 28 supported countries and more than 250 owned games was time-specific.

A practical decision checklist

  • You own the digital game and see the Play Anywhere icon: install the PC version with the same account and use the synchronized gamertag save.
  • You do not own it but it is in the PC Game Pass catalog: sign in to the subscribing account and install it locally.
  • You want to avoid a large download: check the cloud gaming section, plan, region, device, and title eligibility first.
  • You own only a physical Xbox disc or the game is console-only: neither Play Anywhere nor PC Game Pass automatically supplies a PC installation.
  • Your PC is older or storage is limited: compare the game’s requirements before downloading and investigate cloud eligibility as a separate option.

What to recheck before starting a new game

Xbox app requirements, Game Pass plan names, catalog membership, Play Anywhere titles, cloud-supported games, and regional availability are service details that can change. Before committing a purchase, download, or subscription, open the current Xbox listing and verify the PC platform label, entitlement, system requirements, and available play method. The app’s minimums—Windows 10 or 11 version 22H2 or later, 150 MB of app storage, and a 720p-or-higher display—are only the launcher baseline; the game’s own requirements control whether it will actually run well.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
