You can play Xbox games on a PC or Windows handheld by installing a supported PC version, using an eligible Xbox Play Anywhere purchase, streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming, or streaming from your own console with Remote Play. A separate, limited PC backward-compatibility release also covers four classic original Xbox games. These routes have different catalogs and ownership rules: an Xbox console purchase does not automatically include a PC copy.
Choose the right way to play
| Route | What runs the game? | What to check | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native PC installation | Your PC or Windows handheld | A PC version, Windows version, game requirements, and storage | Local play, including games that support offline play |
| Xbox Play Anywhere | A native version on each supported device | That exact title is eligible and supports the account features you need | One eligible digital purchase across Xbox and PC |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Xbox cloud servers | Supported device, region, game catalog, and subscription or purchase terms | Playing without installing the PC game locally |
| Xbox Remote Play | Your own Xbox console | Supported device, console remote settings and power state, and internet connection | Accessing games installed on a console you own |
| Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC | The Xbox app on Windows 11 for the announced classic-games lineup | Current supported games, region, and hardware requirements | Playing the limited selection of classic original Xbox games announced for PC |
The “best fit” descriptions summarize how each route works; they are not performance benchmarks. Xbox describes the available methods on its handhelds page and PC page.
Can I play my Xbox games on my PC?
Often, but the answer depends on the game and how you own it. If a game has a PC edition, you can install that version through the Xbox PC app or another supported PC storefront. An Xbox console version is not automatically a PC version. Xbox says its PC app brings together games from most PC storefronts; that does not turn every console edition into a PC edition.

- On Windows, search for Xbox in Start or Windows search and open the Xbox app. Xbox says the app is preinstalled on most Windows 11 PCs; if it is not installed, get it through Xbox’s PC page.
- Sign in with the account that owns the game or has access to the relevant subscription.
- Find the game and confirm that a PC version is available. Check its individual system requirements before installing.
- Install and launch the game. If it is not available in the Xbox app, check the PC storefront that sells or distributes that edition.
The Xbox PC app’s general requirement is Windows 10 or 11, version 22H2 or later, 150 MB of storage for the app plus additional space for games, and a display of at least 720p. Windows must be out of S mode to play through the app. These are app requirements, not a guarantee that a particular game will run well; each game can have more demanding hardware requirements. Xbox lists these details in its PC FAQ.

Use an eligible Play Anywhere game
Xbox Play Anywhere lets you buy one eligible digital game and play it on supported Xbox consoles and Windows PCs without buying a second copy. Supported games can sync progress, add-ons, and achievements through your Xbox account. It is a title-by-title program, not a general transfer of every Xbox purchase. Look for the Play Anywhere designation on the specific game’s Xbox listing or check Xbox’s Play Anywhere information.
Try the limited PC backward-compatibility release
In an Xbox Wire announcement dated July 22, 2026, Xbox said four original Xbox games were available at launch in supported regions through an early-release PC backward-compatibility program: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. Xbox said the games were available to buy for PC and included with all Xbox Game Pass plans; it also said an existing digital console license for those titles carried over to PC or handheld. This is a specific, evolving lineup, not a way to install any Xbox console game on Windows. See the live Xbox Wire announcement for the latest supported titles and regions.

Can I play Xbox games on a handheld?
A Windows handheld is a portable PC. It can install and run supported PC games if its hardware meets the game’s requirements, but it does not make every console game installable locally. You can also use Cloud Gaming or Remote Play where the device and service are supported.
Check compatibility, not just the device name
Xbox’s handheld compatibility labels are Handheld optimized, Mostly compatible, Unsupported, and Not tested. They help indicate how a listed game works on a handheld, but they do not promise a specific frame rate. Some games may need settings adjustments, and actual performance varies by title and device. Check the handheld compatibility catalog and the game’s PC requirements before installing.

Understand the hardware and storage trade-offs
Xbox’s product page lists the ROG Xbox Ally with Windows 11 Home, an AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16 GB of memory, and a 512 GB SSD. The ROG Xbox Ally X is listed with Windows 11 Home, an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24 GB of memory, and a 1 TB SSD. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent performance comparisons. Consider the specific games you want to play, screen and controls, portability, install space, internet dependence, and total cost, including any subscription. Xbox does not provide independent comparative benchmarks for these devices in its product information.
Xbox lists SanDisk microSD cards in 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB capacities for the ROG Xbox Ally family. Treat a card as optional extra storage and verify compatibility with the exact handheld model before buying. A controller is also optional: Xbox lists its Xbox Wireless Controller for PC, while compatible games may support other input methods. See the ROG Xbox Ally product information and Xbox PC page.

Can I stream Xbox games without downloading them?
Yes, with Xbox Cloud Gaming, if the game, region, device, and account or purchase terms are supported. Cloud Gaming runs the game on Xbox servers and streams it to your device; it does not install the game locally. Xbox says Game Pass is required for some cloud-playable games, while games outside a subscription’s included library may be sold separately. Not every owned game or Game Pass title is streamable, and the catalog and regional availability can change. Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming catalog and device information before relying on access to a particular title.

Can I play my Xbox remotely on my PC?
Yes. Xbox Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S to a supported device. It uses your console, unlike Cloud Gaming, which runs games on Xbox servers. To use Remote Play, enable remote features on the console, keep it on or in Sleep mode, and use a supported device with an internet connection. You also need the game installed on the console. Consult Xbox’s Remote Play information for supported devices and connection requirements.
Does Xbox Game Pass work on a handheld?
It can, but the way it works depends on the handheld and the game. On a Windows handheld, you can install PC games available through the Xbox app if the device meets their requirements. Cloud Gaming may let you stream supported games, subject to the game’s catalog, device, region, and subscription conditions. A Game Pass subscription does not make every console game locally installable on a handheld; check whether the title has a PC version or is playable through Cloud Gaming.
What are the PC requirements for classic Xbox games?
Xbox’s July 22, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement set the following requirements for its early-release PC backward-compatibility program. They apply to that program, not to all Xbox PC games. The announcement specifies graphics drivers and versions as “Latest Version as of January 2026” and notes that the minimum and recommended specifications were updated on July 22, 2026; check the live announcement before relying on them.

Which route should I use?
- You own an Xbox and want to play its installed games elsewhere: use Remote Play, after enabling the console’s remote features and checking device and connection support.

- You want one digital purchase across Xbox and PC: confirm that the exact game is Xbox Play Anywhere eligible.
- You want to avoid downloading a PC game: check whether it is in the Cloud Gaming catalog for your device and region and whether your subscription or purchase covers it.
