You may be able to play an Xbox game without internet or a successful sign-in, but only when two conditions were met in advance: the purchasing account designated that console as its Home Xbox, and the particular game includes an offline mode. Home Xbox licensing and a game’s connectivity rules are separate. A Home Xbox does not make an always-online title work offline.
Internet loss and sign-in failure are related but distinct. Losing internet prevents contact with Xbox services; an authentication problem can also stop you from changing account or licensing settings even when the console is connected. The steps below separate those cases so you know what can work now and what must wait until you can sign in again.
The short answer
Try the installed digital games on the console that was already set as the account’s Home Xbox. Microsoft describes a Home console as an Xbox “designated to share the offline licenses of the purchasing account (also known as Home Xbox).” (Microsoft’s product-sharing documentation)

That license does not override a game’s own network requirements. Microsoft’s offline-play guidance says some games require Xbox network connectivity, some provide at least one offline mode, and “Games are not required to support offline play.” The guidance was last updated November 6, 2025. If you are unsure which case applies, check three facts: which account bought or claims the game, which console is that account’s Home Xbox, and whether the exact title and mode have been tested without a connection. Changing only one of those facts does not guarantee a launch.
What Home Xbox changes
Digital purchases are associated with the account that bought them, but Microsoft also provides a console-level offline license. Designating a console as Home Xbox associates applicable offline licenses with that device. This is why a console can sometimes start an owned digital game even when the purchasing account cannot currently authenticate.
The designation is not a universal offline permission. It does not remove a title’s requirement for online matchmaking, cloud services, server-side profiles, or other network functions. It also does not permanently validate a subscription entitlement. Treat Home Xbox as the prerequisite that makes offline licensing possible, not as a promise that every installed game will launch.

It is different from simply having the account profile stored on the machine, and it is different from a game being installed. A download places game files on storage; the Home Xbox designation supplies the console-level licensing context that can allow those files to start offline.
Microsoft’s licensing explanation is written around Xbox One settings, while current console software can present slightly different labels. The documented location is Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox; use the equivalent label shown on your console and verify the current menu wording while you can sign in. Set Home Xbox before you lose access
Complete these steps while the account can sign in and the console has internet access. They are preparation, not a recovery trick for an account that is already locked out.
- Sign in with the purchasing account. Use the account that owns the digital game or receives the relevant entitlement. A different household profile may be able to use the console’s offline license, but it cannot designate Home Xbox for the purchasing account unless that account is the one being configured.
- Open the Home Xbox setting. Go to Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox. If your console uses a newer wording or layout, open the equivalent Personalization page and locate the Home Xbox designation.
- Designate the console. Choose the command that makes the current console the account’s Home Xbox and wait for the confirmation to complete. Do not assume that merely opening the page or signing in has changed the designation.
- Install the game and its available updates. An installed title is easier to test during an outage, although installation by itself does not create a license or remove a network requirement. Leave enough local storage for the game and updates you plan to use.
- Test the title before you need it. While still connected, start the game, reach the mode you expect to use, then test it without network access. A successful test is evidence for that title and configuration, not a guarantee for every future update or entitlement renewal.
Only one console can be the account’s Home Xbox at a time. Microsoft Community guidance also advises assigning a replacement after an upgrade; a full reset that removes everything can require the designation to be set again. Offline play is decided by the individual game
Do not infer offline support from a “single-player” label. A title can include a solo campaign and still require a network connection for authentication, world data, anti-cheat checks, cloud saves, or its launch flow. Conversely, a game with online features may include a separate local or solo mode that works without them.
Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation makes the policy explicit: “Games are not required to support offline play.” (Best practices for handling offline play) The developer, not the Home Xbox switch, determines whether a mode can operate without Xbox network connectivity.
Check the exact mode you intend to use, not just whether the game appears in your library. A local campaign, tutorial, or practice mode may behave differently from multiplayer, cloud-based progression, or a mode that loads data from the publisher’s servers. If the title presents a connection prompt during your controlled test, treat that prompt as a requirement for that title or mode.

Internet loss and sign-in failure are different problems
“Can’t sign in” can describe two separate situations. A service or internet outage prevents contact with Xbox services. An authentication problem can continue even when the console is connected, and it can prevent you from changing licensing settings. The remedy depends on which state you are in.
If the internet is down but Home Xbox was already set
Leave the console as it is and try an installed title that you previously confirmed has an offline-capable mode. Online functions such as multiplayer, cloud-dependent features, and service-connected profiles will not be available. If the game immediately displays a connectivity requirement, that title or mode is not usable offline.
Do not repeatedly remove and re-add the account just because services are unavailable. Removing local account data does not create an offline license and may leave you unable to restore the same setup until sign-in works again. Use the console in its current configuration and test only games that were prepared in advance.
If the console has internet but the account will not authenticate
Do not repeatedly reset the console or remove the account while trying to solve the problem. If Home Xbox was already designated, test the offline-capable installed games first. If it was not designated, the documented setup flow does not provide a confirmed way to assign it without account access; reconnecting and completing sign-in may be necessary.

Keep the distinction clear: being connected to a router is not the same as being authenticated to the purchasing account. A connected console may still be unable to obtain a license check, while a preconfigured Home Xbox may launch an eligible title with no active sign-in.

If you are using a non-Home console
The available documentation does not promise that the purchasing account’s digital games will launch offline on another console. Keep the console connected and resolve authentication or license validation rather than treating a network-offline state as a workaround.
If a game launches and then asks for a connection
That prompt can reflect the game’s required online services or a license-renewal check. A Home Xbox designation can supply the console’s offline license, but it cannot satisfy a title that insists on contacting its services. Note when the prompt appears: at startup, when selecting a mode, or when loading saved data. That timing helps distinguish a game requirement from a licensing or entitlement check when you reconnect.
A practical decision path
- Was this console already Home Xbox for the purchasing account? If yes, continue. If no or you do not know, do not promise offline access; plan to reconnect and sign in before changing the setting.
- Is the game installed locally? If not, an outage cannot be used to complete the download or update. Installation is preparation for the next outage, not a way to create a missing license.
- Does the title provide an offline mode? Test the exact mode while connected, then repeat the test with the console offline.
- Does the title or entitlement request a connection? If it does, reconnect. No Home Xbox option can remove a game’s own online requirement or bypass a periodic renewal.
This path prevents a common mistake: changing network settings first and assuming that a failed launch proves the console is configured incorrectly. The failure may instead be the title’s design or an entitlement that needs renewal.
Subscriptions and periodic license checks
Owning a console-level offline license and having a current subscription are not identical conditions. Microsoft’s product-sharing model notes that some licenses require periodic online renewal. As a result, a game that worked during a previous outage may later request a connection when its entitlement must be refreshed.
Do not describe an active subscription as an indefinite offline pass. Before travel or a planned outage, launch the exact games you intend to use and test their offline modes. Keep the console connected often enough for required renewals; there is no documented setting that converts a periodically validated entitlement into a permanent offline license.
Renewal timing is not a promise that every title will behave the same way. One game may continue to a local mode while another stops at startup, depending on how its license and services are implemented. Record the result for each title and leave time to reconnect if a renewal prompt appears before departure.
Prepare for travel, outages, and account trouble
A short preparation routine avoids discovering a title’s limitation after you have lost connectivity.

For a useful test, disconnect the console after the game has fully updated, start it again without network access, and navigate to the mode you expect to use. Then reconnect and check that your saves and updates are synchronized. The point is not to force a title to work, but to learn its actual behavior while you still have a recovery option.

These steps improve your odds but cannot guarantee future access. A game update can change its startup requirements, and a subscription or other license can reach a renewal point while the console is offline.

If a title failed offline, compare the result with the decision path: was the console Home Xbox, was the game fully installed and updated, and does the specific mode support offline operation? That comparison is more useful than repeatedly toggling the network connection. Once the account and licenses validate, note whether the game now launches locally or still requires its own services.
The reliable decision is therefore title-by-title: a preconfigured Home Xbox can make applicable digital licenses available offline, but only a game that provides an offline mode can use that license without network services.
