To play VALORANT with friends, add or find them in the client’s Social panel, invite them to your party, and let the party leader choose a mode and press Queue. Unrated generally uses different eligibility rules from Competitive. Competitive can reject a party because of rank spread, party size, account status, or an active restriction. Since those rules can change by patch and region, treat the warning shown in your current client as the immediate authority rather than relying on an old rank chart.
This guide explains the complete party flow, what the two main queues mean for groups, why a friend may be blocked, and how Riot’s historical rules fit into the picture without presenting them as today’s guaranteed limits.
How do I play VALORANT with friends?
The normal sequence is short:
- Launch VALORANT and wait until every player appears online and available.
- Open the Social panel and locate a friend by their Riot ID and tagline or in your existing friends list.
- Send an invite. The recipient accepts it from the client’s social or party notification.
- Confirm that everyone who should play appears in the same party panel.
- The party leader selects a game mode, reviews any eligibility message, and starts the queue.
- When the match is found, every party member accepts the prompt.
The leader is the player who initiates matchmaking. If the leader leaves, the client may transfer leadership; check who is marked as leader before trying again. The exact button labels can move slightly between patches, but the Social panel, party roster, mode selector, and Queue control are the parts of the flow you need.
Find a friend and send an invite
Open the social/friends area from the main menu. Search for the friend’s complete Riot ID, including the tagline after the number sign, if the person is not already listed. A partial name can return several results or none. Select the correct account and choose the invite option. Ask the friend to check the client itself if no notification appears; an invitation sent while the other person is offline may not be acted on until they return.

Accept the invitation and check the roster
After accepting, both players should see the same party roster. Before choosing a mode, confirm that nobody is still marked as offline, away, in another match, or unavailable. A stale presence state can make an otherwise valid invitation look broken. If a person appears in your friends list but not in the party, send a fresh invite after they return to the main menu.
Choose a mode before queueing
Unrated and Competitive are separate queues. Do not assume that a party accepted for Unrated will also qualify for Competitive. Competitive can evaluate rank disparity, party size, account eligibility, and restrictions before enabling Queue. Select the intended mode first, then read the message displayed near the queue controls.
What changes when you play as a group?
Party formation and matchmaking eligibility are two different checks. You can successfully invite somebody and still be unable to start a particular queue. The client can allow the party to exist while disabling Competitive until the group meets that mode’s current requirements.

- Eligibility check: Does each account satisfy the current rank, account, and restriction rules?
- Matchmaking check: Can the service find an acceptable match for this party configuration?
These checks also explain why changing the party leader can help only with a leadership or client-state problem; it does not override a rank or account restriction.
Unrated versus Competitive for friend groups
Use the distinction below when deciding where to queue. Exact current caps and exceptions are not established by the historical Riot material available for this topic, so the live client’s warning takes precedence.

If the goal is simply to play together, select an unranked queue when Competitive rejects the group. If the goal is ranked progress, do not treat that workaround as equivalent: the unranked result will not provide Competitive RR.
Can different ranks play together in VALORANT?
Sometimes, but there is no single permanent answer that applies to every patch, region, party size, and queue. Competitive has had rank-disparity rules that changed over time. The only reliable present-day answer is the eligibility message shown by the current client, supplemented by the current regional Riot support information.
What Riot’s older rules show
Riot’s Patch 1.10 notes, published October 13, 2020, recorded a three-tier cap on rank disparity for Competitive parties and said matchmaking had been tightened to reduce skill disparity. Those notes replaced an earlier six-tier limit. This is historical evidence of a rule at that time, not a current cap. Read Riot’s Patch 1.10 notes.
Riot’s May 13, 2020 ranked explainer said premade groups of different sizes were supported and that matchmaking for solo players and smaller groups would favor similarly sized premades. That describes Riot’s design approach then; it does not guarantee identical behavior in the current service. Read Riot’s ranked explainer.
Why five-stacks are a special case
Riot’s Patch 3.10 announcement, published November 16, 2021, said: “We’re removing all ranked restrictions from 5-stack parties in Competitive Queue.” Under the rules announced in that patch, five-stacks could include players across ranks, but Riot warned about longer queue times and reduced RR treatment based on rank disparity. The same announcement said four-stacks were being removed from Competitive queue at that time. Riot described at least a 50% RR reduction for groups including Diamond 3 or above and at least a 75% reduction for groups including Radiant; the patch also described 90% reductions in certain five-stack examples and conditions. Those percentages belong to that 2021 patch-era system and should not be quoted as current values without a newer official confirmation. Read Riot’s Patch 3.10 notes.

The historical timeline matters because it prevents a common mistake: combining the three-tier rule from Patch 1.10 with the five-stack exception from Patch 3.10 as if they were one unchanged rule. They were different announcements made at different times.
Can a five-stack queue ranked together?
A five-stack may be allowed by the current Competitive system, but you must check the client before relying on that assumption. Riot explicitly allowed five-stacks across ranks in Patch 3.10 under conditions that included longer searches and reduced RR treatment. Later patches may have changed the implementation, the penalty schedule, or the regions and queues to which it applies.
To test a five-stack without guessing:
- Invite the fifth player and verify that all five accounts are visible and available.
- Select Competitive.
- Read every warning beside the queue controls. Note whether it mentions rank spread, queue time, RR, party size, or an account restriction.
- If Queue is enabled, decide whether the expected wait and RR treatment are acceptable before starting.
- If Queue is disabled, remove or replace one member only if the client identifies a specific size or rank conflict; otherwise use an unranked mode or consult current Riot support.
Do not promise a particular RR percentage to teammates based on the 2021 notes. The current client may show a different treatment, and a visible warning is more relevant to the match you are about to start.
Why can’t my friend join my Competitive party?
Work through these checks in order. The first matching explanation is usually more useful than repeatedly sending invitations.
1. Confirm online status and availability
- Have both players return to the main menu.
- Check that the friend is not already in a match, another party, or a pending queue.
- Close and reopen the social panel if the status looks stale.
- Send a new invite after the friend is visibly online.
2. Read the exact in-client warning
Look for text beside the party roster or Queue button. A warning that names rank disparity is a different problem from one that names party size or account eligibility. Capture the wording before changing the roster; removing players at random can hide the original cause.

3. Check rank and party-size eligibility
Competitive can apply rules to the spread between the highest and lowest eligible ranks and to the number of players in the party. Because the thresholds have changed historically, use the current client rather than a screenshot or old guide. If the message says the group is too wide, try a smaller rank range or an unranked queue. If it says the size is invalid, test the mode with a permitted group size shown by the client.
4. Check account and communication restrictions
A restriction notice can affect access to a game mode. Riot’s Player Support material covers communication restrictions and related penalties, including mode restrictions. Check the restriction notice on the affected account and the relevant regional support page. A voice or text restriction alone should not automatically be assumed to block matchmaking; only the account notice and the queue’s own message establish that for the player. Review Riot Player Support’s communication-restriction information.
5. Try a different leader
Have another eligible player become party leader and select the mode again. This can clear a stale lobby state or a leader-specific queue error. It cannot bypass a restriction, rank rule, or invalid party size.
6. Use an unranked queue as a diagnostic
If the same roster can enter Unrated but not Competitive, the social connection is probably working and the issue is Competitive eligibility. If the party cannot enter either queue, investigate account status, availability, client state, or a service issue instead of rank disparity alone.

How matchmaking treats groups
Matchmaking does not simply average every player’s visible rank and start a game. It must find opponents and teammates while accounting for the party configuration allowed by the selected queue. Riot’s 2020 explanation said solo players and smaller groups would be matched with similar premade sizes where possible. That was a design explanation from that period, not a promise that every current match will have identical party composition.

A wide-skill party can therefore create two separate effects:
- Eligibility effect: the client may refuse to queue if the current rank or size rule is not met.
- Search effect: even when eligible, the service may need longer to find a suitable match, particularly for unusual or wide-rank groups.
Neither effect means a friend invitation failed. Invitations establish the party; matchmaking decides whether that party can enter a specific queue.
Competitive RR, queue time, and expectations
Competitive is the wrong place to assume that every eligible party receives ordinary solo-queue treatment. Riot’s Patch 3.10 notes connected broad five-stack rank spreads with longer waits and reduced RR gains or losses. The exact current reductions are not verified here, so teammates should read the pre-queue message and any post-match result rather than rely on old percentages.
Before starting a ranked five-stack, agree on three practical points:
- Everyone accepts that the search may take longer than a conventional party.
- Everyone understands that the current client may show special RR treatment.
- No one treats a historical number—50%, 75%, or 90%—as a guaranteed value for today’s match.
If a normal-rank party is trying to avoid an unexpectedly long search, use a group whose ranks are closer together or select an unranked queue. That is a planning choice, not a claim about a fixed matchmaking timer.
A reliable pre-queue checklist
- All intended players are online and at the main menu.
- Every account appears in one party roster.
- The intended mode is selected before checking eligibility.
- The party leader has read the warning beside Queue.
- Any restriction notice has been checked on the affected account.
- Rank spread and party size match what the live client allows.
- For Competitive, the group understands possible queue-time and RR consequences.
- Everyone is ready to accept the match prompt.
What not to assume
- Do not assume that an Unrated party can automatically enter Competitive.
- Do not assume that a historical three-tier cap is still the current cap.
- Do not assume that every five-stack receives the 2021 RR reductions.
- Do not assume that four-stacks are still treated exactly as they were in Patch 3.10.
- Do not assume that a communication restriction always blocks matchmaking.
- Do not assume that changing party leadership overrides eligibility rules.
Fast decision guide
- Can you invite the friend? If no, verify the Riot ID, online status, and client notifications.
- Can the friend join the party? If no, check whether they are already in a match, another party, or subject to an account restriction.
- Can the party queue Unrated? If yes, the social connection is functioning; focus on Competitive requirements.
- Can the party queue Competitive? If no, read the rank, size, and restriction warning exactly.
- Does the warning conflict with an old guide? Follow the live client and current regional Riot support information; old patch notes are historical context only.
The practical rule is simple: build the party first, choose the queue second, and treat the current eligibility warning as the authority. Rank restrictions, five-stack exceptions, queue times, and RR treatment have changed before and can change again.
