To play UNO online with friends, use Mattel’s official UNO! mobile app: connect through the Friends feature, create a friend-play room, choose the rules, and invite players with an in-game link or code. Choose Quick Play for classic rules, Room Mode for a four-person house-rules game, or 2v2 to team up with a friend.
What you need to play
- The UNO! mobile app: Each player should install the official app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. The listings describe online play with friends and family. App availability and device compatibility can vary by region and device.
- A way to connect in the app: You can look up a friend by player ID or share an in-game invitation link or code, according to Mattel support.
- A shared choice of rules: Decide whether you want classic play or a house-rules variant before starting the match.
The app is free to download and offers optional in-app purchases. The store listings do not say that a purchase is required to play with friends.
How to invite friends and start a game
- Install the app. Have everyone download the official UNO! app from their device’s Apple or Google app store. Check the current listing for availability and compatibility for your device and region.
- Open the Friends area. In the app, use the Friends feature to find the people you want to play with. Mattel support describes searching for a friend using their player ID.
- Send or accept an invitation. You can share an in-game invitation link or code with friends. If you do not have an invitation to share, try searching for the friend’s player ID in the Friends tab.
- Start a friend-play room. Choose the friend-play room option and select the game mode and house rules before the match begins. The app’s labels and menus may change, so follow its current in-app instructions if the wording differs.
- Confirm the rules with the group. Make sure everyone knows which variants are turned on. Rules such as stacking and 7-0 hand swaps can change how a match plays.
Choose the mode that suits your group

These options serve different preferences: Quick Play prioritizes classic rules, Room Mode lets a four-person group set house rules, and 2v2 makes the match a team game. Check the mode and rule selections in the room before starting, especially if some players expect a traditional game.

Decide which house rules to use
The official mobile game includes optional rule variations, including stacking and 7-0 hand swaps. These are not interchangeable with a classic-rules match: they change what players can do or how cards move between hands. If the group wants the classic experience, choose Quick Play rather than assuming a custom room will use those rules by default.

For a friend-play room, agree on the variants before inviting everyone into the match. That avoids starting a game with different expectations about whether stacking or hand swaps are allowed. The available choices and their labels can change with app updates; use the current room settings and in-app rules.
Can you play UNO online with friends in a browser?
The official information available for this guide describes friend play through Mattel’s mobile app and app-store downloads; it does not establish a current official browser-based option for playing with friends. For the documented method, install the app and use its Friends and room features rather than relying on a web browser.

If you cannot find a friend
- Search by player ID: Mattel support says you can look up a friend’s player ID in the Friends tab. Make sure you are using the ID associated with their in-game account.
- Use an invitation link or code: If a player can create or share an in-game invite, try that route instead of searching.
- Check the app’s current instructions: Store listings and menu labels can change. Follow the instructions shown in the app, and check the current official store listing for platform availability and compatibility.
Once everyone is connected, select the mode and agree on the rules before beginning. That is the key distinction between a classic Quick Play match, a house-rules Room Mode game, and a 2v2 team match.
