Yes, many Ubisoft games can be played without an internet connection, but “Ubisoft Connect has an offline mode” is not the same as a guarantee that every game, edition, DLC pack or save will work forever offline. Before disconnecting, update Ubisoft Connect PC and the game, sign in to the account that owns it, redeem any keys, install it, complete at least one online launch, and back up local saves. Then test that exact title with the network disabled.
Server retirements generally remove multiplayer, news, statistics, challenges, rewards delivery and some unlockable content while leaving whatever offline features Ubisoft lists for that title. Games with permanent-online requirements, subscription access or recurring authentication can still stop working. A disc preserves installation media in some cases, not a promise of DRM-free ownership.
What Ubisoft offline play actually means
Ubisoft Connect PC can start without an internet connection in offline mode. That mode is a launcher function: it lets an already prepared installation open without contacting Ubisoft for every session. It does not remove account ownership checks, digital-rights management (DRM), first-launch activation, subscription rules or a game’s own online requirements.
Offline behavior is therefore title-, platform- and edition-specific. A single-player campaign may remain playable while multiplayer, online inventories, news feeds, statistics, daily challenges or server-delivered rewards disappear. Some games start offline only after an online activation; others require a connection every time. The game’s packaging, store listing, end-user licence and Ubisoft’s retirement notice are the authority for that particular product.

What must already be true
- The installed copy is linked to the Ubisoft account you will use offline.
- Any key, disc entitlement or store purchase has been redeemed and activated.
- The game has completed its required installation and first launch while online.
- Updates and downloadable content you expect to use are installed.
- Your local save files are backed up somewhere outside the game folder.
Prepare a game before disconnecting
Do this while the client and Ubisoft services are reachable. Preparation is the difference between a planned offline session and discovering an activation requirement after you have lost connectivity.
-
Confirm the owning Ubisoft account
Ubisoft links games and in-game content to the account on which they were activated or redeemed. In Ubisoft Connect PC, sign out and back in if necessary, then check your library while online. If a purchased game is absent, first verify the email or account used for the purchase. Clearing the Ubisoft Connect cache and restarting the client can correct a stale library display; it cannot transfer a licence between accounts.
-
Install the current Ubisoft Connect PC client
Download and install the newest client from ubisoftconnect.com. An outdated client can produce “Service is unavailable” errors, including when an older Ubisoft game is being installed from a disc. Let the client finish updating before you begin the game setup.

Redeem keys and complete disc activation
Redeem a retail, boxed or third-party key on the account that will own the game. For a disc copy, install from the disc if that is the supplied installer, but allow Ubisoft Connect to download the current patches and verify the entitlement. A disc can contain old software while the current client handles authentication and updates.
-
Install the game and required DLC
Install the base game to the drive you intend to use offline. Download story expansions, language packs and other content now. Content that is merely listed in a store account but not downloaded may require a server connection later, and content tied to a retired redemption service may no longer be obtainable.
-
Launch once with the network connected
Start the game from Ubisoft Connect PC and reach the main menu or a point at which the game creates its local profile. Ubisoft’s EULA allows DRM to require an online connection during installation or first launch. Complete that check before travelling or deliberately disconnecting.
-
Finish every update
Offline mode does not install automatic updates. Keep the client open until both the launcher and game show that updates have completed. If an update is optional, decide while online whether to install it; do not assume an offline client will fetch it later.

Back up local saves
Use Ubisoft’s reinstall guidance for the particular game’s save location, copy the local save folder to another drive and keep a dated backup. Cloud synchronization is available only for supported games and is not a substitute for a local copy during a prolonged outage. Back up before reinstalling, changing Windows profiles or resetting a console.
-
Perform an offline rehearsal
Quit the game and Ubisoft Connect PC, disable Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet, then start the client and the game exactly as you will when away from the internet. Record which menus, DLC, rewards and saves appear. This test catches a title-specific first-launch or authentication dependency while you still have a way to recover.
How to use Ubisoft Connect PC offline mode
Ubisoft changes client screens over time, so the wording of the command can vary by build. The sequence remains the same:
- While connected, open Ubisoft Connect PC and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Use the account or profile menu and choose the client’s Go offline or equivalent offline-mode command.
- Close and relaunch the client if it asks you to confirm the mode. Verify that the prepared game is visible in your installed library.
- Disconnect the computer from the network and start the game from the client or its installed shortcut, according to the result of your rehearsal.
- When you reconnect, return the client to online mode and allow pending client and game updates before your next offline session.
Offline mode is not a licence bypass. If the game has not been activated on that account, if its DRM check has expired, or if its design requires a permanent connection, the launcher may open while the game refuses to start.
What generally works and fails without a connection
| Feature or content | Typical offline result | Why the result varies |
|---|---|---|
| Installed single-player campaign | Often available after online activation | The title may impose a first-launch or recurring DRM check. |
| Local saves | Available when the game stores them locally | A cloud-only or unsynchronized save cannot be downloaded while offline. |
| Multiplayer and co-op | Unavailable | Other players, matchmaking and game servers require a network. |
| In-game news, statistics and leaderboards | Unavailable or stale | These are server-delivered services. |
| Automatic updates | Unavailable | Offline mode does not contact update servers. |
| Previously installed story DLC | Often usable if the licence remains valid | Activation, platform and edition rules still apply. |
| Unredeemed maps, skins or event rewards | May be unobtainable after retirement | Redemption services and entitlement servers can be shut down. |
| Subscription catalogue access | Not dependable | Subscription terms can require a persistent connection and can end access when the term ends. |
“Often” in this table is deliberate: Ubisoft does not promise one offline policy for its entire catalogue. Use the exact game’s platform and edition when making a purchase or preparing for travel.
What a Ubisoft server shutdown can remove
Ubisoft’s legacy-service notices usually distinguish online services from offline features. For listed games, shutdowns have removed online multiplayer, in-game news and player statistics. Units and Challenges can be retired. A game may still display a reward condition, but the reward may no longer be deliverable in-game. Unlockable content such as maps and skins may no longer be redeemable.
Previously redeemed unlockable content has an additional platform distinction in Ubisoft’s notices: on PC it can become unavailable after the relevant service is retired; on console it may remain available unless the saved-game files are reset. That is why preserving a console save and reinstalling a PC copy are not equivalent actions.

Examples of title-specific retirement dates
| Game | Platform | Date listed by Ubisoft | What the date means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag | Wii U | 8 April 2024 | A platform-specific legacy-service retirement entry; check the notice for the remaining offline features. |
| Ghost Recon Future Soldier | PC | 25 January 2024 | A PC entry; redeemed unlockables and online systems can be affected differently from console versions. |
| Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E. | PC | 30 June 2026 | A listed date for that title and platform, not a catalogue-wide shutdown date. |
Retirement dates and platform effects are not permanent purchasing assumptions. Check Ubisoft’s current legacy-service table immediately before buying, reinstalling or wiping a save for an older game. A date applies to the named title and platform, not automatically to a similarly named release on another system.

The account, DRM and permanent-online boundary
Ubisoft’s Terms of Use state: “A high-speed internet connection, an Account and the installation of the Ubisoft Connect client software (http://ubisoftconnect.com) may be required to install, launch, access and unlock all or part of the Content and Services.” They also state that “some games and features may require a permanent online connection.”
The EULA adds: “during the installation and/or the first launch of the Product, an online connection may be required to unlock the Product through the DRM Software.” These clauses explain why an offline launcher cannot be treated as a universal preservation guarantee. A game can be installed locally and still fail an authentication request, a recurring entitlement check or a service call that its design requires.
Questions to ask for a specific title
- Does the store edition require Ubisoft Connect even when purchased on another PC storefront?
- Is the campaign playable after one online activation, or does the game require a permanent connection?
- Are season passes, bonus missions and cosmetics installed locally or delivered by a live entitlement service?
- Does the platform keep a licence and save locally, or does it depend on a subscription account?
- What happens to the game if Ubisoft retires its online services for this platform?
Local installation, disc, Ubisoft+ and cloud gaming compared
| Access method | Offline capability | Authentication and ownership | Server dependence | DLC, rewards and saves | Update requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Digital local installation | Possible for supported titles after preparation | Account licence and any DRM checks remain | Online features and title-specific checks can fail | Installed local content may work; unredeemed or retired content may not; saves can be local or cloud-backed | Update before disconnecting |
| Physical disc | Possible only where the title supports offline play | Disc is installation media; Ubisoft Connect and account activation may still be required | Client, DRM, DLC and online features can still depend on servers | Disc does not guarantee permanent access to digital bonuses; protect saves | Install the current client and patches while online |
| Ubisoft+ access | Not a dependable offline-preservation method | Subscription entitlement rather than perpetual ownership | Persistent internet is required for Ubisoft+ online and offline play under its terms | Saved progression is retained only where supported by cloud saves or local files; access ends when the term ends | Keep the subscription and client current |
| Cloud gaming | None; gameplay is streamed | Linked store and Ubisoft accounts authenticate the session | Continuous network connection is inherent to streaming | Progress follows the linked service; local offline files are not the fallback | No local game patching, but the streaming service must be reachable |
Why a physical disc does not guarantee permanent access
A disc can preserve a local installer for some older titles, which is useful when a digital download is no longer offered. Ubisoft specifically documents older disc installations as cases in which the newest Ubisoft Connect client may be needed. The disc does not, by itself, prove that the product is DRM-free, that Ubisoft Connect can be bypassed, that DLC is on the disc or that the first launch works without an account.
Before buying a used or new disc, check all of these details for the exact release:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Platform and region, including whether the disc is compatible with the console generation you own.
- Edition and included DLC; a “complete” label may represent a code that has already been redeemed.
- Whether the disc installs the full game or only supplies a launcher for a download.
- Whether Ubisoft Connect account activation is required on PC.
- Whether the title appears in Ubisoft’s current service-retirement notices.
- Whether your planned console reset or PC reinstall could remove previously redeemed content.
Ubisoft+ and cloud alternatives are not offline backups
Ubisoft+
Ubisoft+ Free Termed Access states that games become unavailable when access ends. Saved progression is retained only where the game supports cloud saves or where local files remain intact. The same terms require a persistent internet connection for Ubisoft+ even when a game is described as being played offline. Treat the subscription as a convenient way to access a catalogue, not as a way to preserve a game after a service change.
Cloud gaming
Ubisoft documents GeForce NOW access for Ubisoft Store and Epic purchases after the relevant accounts are linked; some games must first be activated in Ubisoft Connect PC. Cloud gaming runs the game on a remote computer and streams the result, so it cannot solve an offline-access problem. A local installation and backed-up save are still needed for play during an internet outage.

Troubleshooting offline access
The game is missing from the library
- Sign out of Ubisoft Connect PC and sign back in with the account used to redeem or purchase the game.
- Check the purchase or redemption record and confirm that the platform and edition match the installed files.
- Clear the Ubisoft Connect cache using Ubisoft’s current cache-clearing procedure, restart the client and allow the library to synchronize while online.
- If the title was bought through another store, confirm that the store account is linked to the same Ubisoft account.
If the licence was activated on a different account, cache clearing will not move it. Contacting support with proof of purchase is the appropriate route while services are available.
“Service is unavailable” appears during installation
Update Ubisoft Connect PC first. This error is particularly possible when installing an older game from disc with an outdated client. Reconnect to the network, let the client update, restart the computer if requested, and run the disc installer again. Do not assume that repeated disc installation attempts can bypass an account or DRM requirement.
The game starts online but not offline
- Reconnect and launch once more to complete any pending activation or patch.
- Confirm that Ubisoft Connect is signed in to the owning account before selecting offline mode.
- Check whether the game has a permanent-online requirement or a service that has been retired.
- Restore the backed-up local save only after confirming that the save belongs to the same edition and platform.
- Test with security software and captive portals ruled out; a blocked online first launch can look like an offline failure.
Previously earned content is gone after a shutdown
Separate three cases: content that was never redeemed, content redeemed through a retired service, and content stored in a local save. Ubisoft’s notices say unredeemed maps and skins may no longer be redeemable; PC redeemed unlockables can become unavailable, while console content may remain unless save files are reset. Reinstalling the base game cannot restore an entitlement that the service no longer delivers.
Cloud saves are not appearing
Reconnect and allow synchronization to finish before changing devices. If the game supports local saves, use the backup made before disconnecting. If it supports only a cloud copy and the cloud service is unreachable, there may be no offline recovery path; do not delete the local profile while troubleshooting.

Use this checklist before purchasing an older Ubisoft title or preparing a long trip:
- Identify the exact release: game, platform, edition, region and storefront.
- Check service status: look for a Ubisoft retirement notice and its platform-specific date.
- Read the access conditions: note account, Ubisoft Connect, first-launch DRM and permanent-online language.
- Prefer a perpetual licence for offline preservation: a subscription does not provide ownership after access ends.
- Install and patch while connected: include every DLC item you expect to use.
- Activate and launch once: reach the playable menu before leaving connectivity.
- Back up saves: keep at least one copy outside the installation drive.
- Rehearse offline: disable the network and test the campaign, DLC, saves and menus.
- Keep recovery information: store the owning account email, platform account and purchase record securely.
