Play the Zero Escape trilogy in release and story order: 1) Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999), 2) Virtue’s Last Reward, 3) Zero Time Dilemma. The modern Zero Escape: The Nonary Games collection contains only 999 and Virtue’s Last Reward; you must obtain Zero Time Dilemma separately to finish the trilogy.
The correct Zero Escape order at a glance
The safest first-time route is the same sequence in which the trilogy was released. Each game assumes that the player is building knowledge from the earlier entries, while the third game is explicitly presented by its publisher as the series conclusion.

Abbreviations are common in fan discussions, so you may see the trilogy written as 999 → VLR → ZTD. “Zero Escape” is the series name; the individual games have different subtitles.

Release order is more than a historical preference. It preserves the introductions, revelations and character context that the later games are built around. Zero Time Dilemma uses a non-linear structure, but that does not make it an appropriate starting point. The publisher calls it “the third game in the series” and describes it as the conclusion for longtime fans.

Starting with ZTD can expose you to returning characters and concepts before the earlier games have established them. It can also make references that are meant to reward a player who has completed 999 and VLR feel like unexplained information. Playing in order lets each installment function as intended: the first game establishes the foundation, the second expands it, and the third serves as the capstone.
- First: learn the series’ premise and terminology through 999.
- Second: continue directly into VLR, the sequel that develops the series after its first game.
- Third: play ZTD only after both earlier entries, so its returning elements and concluding role have context.
1. Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999)
Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors is the first Zero Escape game. Its original release was on Nintendo DS in 2009. If you are deciding where to begin, this is the correct starting point regardless of which modern edition you use.
The current practical route is to play the version of 999 included in Zero Escape: The Nonary Games. That collection packages the first two games together, so you do not need to locate an original DS copy merely to experience the opening chapter.

What to expect from the first entry
The collection is described as an escape-room visual-novel package. That description explains the broad format without giving away story information: you read substantial narrative sections and solve escape-room-style puzzles. The important ordering point is that 999 introduces the series before VLR and ZTD build on it.

When to move on
Finish 999 before starting VLR. Avoid switching to the sequel partway through simply because both games are installed in the same collection. The first game is the foundation for the series’ terminology, characters and discoveries; completing it as a unit keeps those developments in the order they were designed to unfold.
2. Virtue’s Last Reward (VLR)
Virtue’s Last Reward is the sequel and second game. It originally released on Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita in 2012. In the modern collection, it appears alongside 999, making the first two-thirds of the recommended route available in one purchase.
Why VLR follows 999
VLR is designed as a continuation rather than a separate entry point. Playing 999 first gives you the intended introduction before VLR develops the larger series framework. Even if you already know broad plot information from another source, the release order still provides the cleanest progression of character and story context.

Zero Escape: The Nonary Games presents both games in one package, but the bundle does not change their sequence. Launch 999 first, complete it, and then select VLR. Treat the collection as two consecutive games, not as a single title with interchangeable chapters.

3. Zero Time Dilemma (ZTD)
Zero Time Dilemma is the third and concluding game. Its listed release date is June 29, 2016. It is not included in Zero Escape: The Nonary Games, so completing that collection does not complete the trilogy.
Why ZTD must be last
The publisher explicitly identifies ZTD as the third game and frames it as the conclusion for longtime fans. Its events are presented non-linearly, but the unusual chronology is part of its design, not an invitation to play the trilogy out of order. Finish 999 and VLR first, then approach ZTD as the final installment.
What you still need after the bundle
After finishing both games in Zero Escape: The Nonary Games, purchase or install Zero Time Dilemma separately. Check the current storefront listing for your country before buying, because platform availability and retailer inventory can change.

What the Nonary Games collection contains
The name can cause confusion because the collection sounds as if it might represent the entire series. It does not. Spike Chunsoft’s product description identifies the package as “Two Spine-tingling Nonary Games” and names 999 and VLR. The Steam listing likewise describes it as a two-game escape-room visual-novel collection.

The collection’s official product page lists March 24, 2017 as its release date. That date refers to the collection, not to the original releases of the two games inside it.
How to buy and install the series today
- Find Zero Escape: The Nonary Games in your region’s current storefront. Confirm the listing names both 999 and VLR. Store catalogs, editions and inventory can vary by country.
- Install the collection and start 999. Do not begin with VLR simply because it appears first in a menu or because you remember its title from a recommendation.
- Complete 999 before launching VLR. Keeping the two collection games in sequence preserves the intended progression.
- Locate Zero Time Dilemma as a separate listing. Confirm that the product is the third game, rather than an add-on or duplicate listing for the collection.
- Play ZTD last. Once both collection games are finished, ZTD is the concluding entry in the recommended route.
The exact storefront, supported operating system and current price depend on your region and the edition being sold. Use the live product page at the time of purchase rather than relying on an old retailer listing.

The original hardware history explains why you may encounter several versions. 999 began on Nintendo DS in 2009, while VLR followed on Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita in 2012. Later publisher-listed PC and console editions provide modern ways to access the games, and the collection brings 999 and VLR together.

A spoiler-safe plan for first-time players
Use only the titles to choose your next game
Search for the exact game names rather than plot summaries. Store descriptions and videos can reveal twists that the series expects you to discover while playing. For an unspoiled route, identify the three products by title and follow the numbered sequence.
Do not reorder because of ZTD’s chronology
ZTD’s non-linear presentation may make an alternate order look tempting. That structure belongs inside the third game. It does not replace the trilogy’s release order.
Keep the collection’s two games distinct
Because 999 and VLR share one product, it is easy to describe them as one long game. They remain separate entries with a defined sequence. Finish the first title before treating the second as your next step.

Check edition details before you pay
- Verify that the listing includes both 999 and VLR.
- Verify that a separate ZTD listing is available for your platform and region.
- Check the edition name and supported platform on the live storefront page.
- Do not assume that owning the collection automatically grants access to ZTD.
Common ordering mistakes
Starting with Zero Time Dilemma
This is the most consequential mistake. ZTD is the third game and conclusion, so beginning there can expose you to later-series context before the earlier games have established it.
Assuming The Nonary Games is the complete trilogy
The collection includes two games, not three. You still need ZTD after completing 999 and VLR.
Playing VLR before 999
VLR is the sequel. Even though both games are sold together, the intended route starts with 999.
Using release dates as separate purchases without checking the edition
The original 2009 and 2012 dates identify the historical releases, while the collection and ZTD have later modern listings. Compare the product name and included content, not just the year shown on a retailer page.
