What you need to play before The Wolf Among Us 2
The essential preparation is one complete game: the original The Wolf Among Us. It is a self-contained season told across five episodes. Telltale presents it as an entry point to the Fables world even for players who have never read the comics, so there is no required reading list or prequel game to finish first. The official game page describes the title and its place in the wider Fables setting: Telltale’s official The Wolf Among Us page.

#1 Best Overall
- Episodic Game - All 5 Episodes Included
- Based on Fables (DC Comics/Vertigo), an award-winning comic book series by Bill Willingham.
- Play as Bigby Wolf: formerly the most feared monster among the Fables, now Sheriff of Fabletown and protector of those he used to hunt. He must restrain the beast within if he is to earn the trust of those around him.
- The characters of myth, lore and legend are real, and exist in our world. Your choices matter and will change and define the story you experience.
- Episodic Game - All 5 Episodes Included
- Faith
- Smoke and Mirrors
- A Crooked Mile
- In Sheep’s Clothing
- Cry Wolf
Those are the five episodes named in Telltale’s 2026 announcement, and the current Steam and Xbox listings enumerate the same season. You should play them in that order rather than treating the episode names as separate games.
Choose between playing now and waiting for the remaster
There are two sensible routes. The first is to start the currently listed original on a storefront available in your country. The second is to wait for the remaster’s digital release if refreshed visuals, interface work, accessibility options, and bonus material matter more to you than starting today.
| Route | When you can start | What it offers | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original season | Now, subject to local storefront availability | The complete five-episode story in its existing release | Store pages and compatibility can differ by country, platform, and account region. |
| Digital remaster | October 29, 2026, according to Telltale’s October 8 update | Updated presentation, interface and accessibility improvements, technical updates, Noir Mode, and more than an hour of behind-the-scenes material | The date is an announced launch plan; availability should be checked on the platform store at release. |
| Physical remaster | Q1 2027 | A planned retail format for people who specifically want a disc or cartridge | Telltale has not established a retailer, preorder, price, or exact day in the cited announcement. |
Telltale’s October 8, 2026 update is the source for the October 29 digital date, the Q1 2027 physical window, and the remaster’s launch platforms: The Wolf Among Us Remastered launch-date update.
Play now if the sequel is your reason for starting
The original is the practical choice if you want to understand the first story before the sequel arrives and do not want to wait two weeks for the announced remaster date. It is already listed on Steam and in the cited United States PlayStation and Xbox stores. Starting now also gives you time to play at your own pace instead of compressing five episodes around a later release.
Wait if presentation and extras are your priority
Waiting makes sense if you are comfortable postponing your first playthrough until October 29 and want the version Telltale is positioning as the refreshed entry point. The remaster’s stated additions concern presentation, usability, technology, and supplemental material; the publisher has not announced a new story campaign.
Wait for physical only if format matters
If you collect physical games, the announced Q1 2027 retail window is later than the digital launch. Do not treat a current retailer page, preorder rumor, or placeholder listing as confirmation: the cited Telltale update does not provide those details.
How to start the original game
Use the store for the platform on which you intend to play. The links below are the cited listings; the PlayStation and Xbox pages are United States storefronts, so a reader elsewhere should search the same title in the local store and verify that the product is offered there.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- PC: Open the Steam listing for The Wolf Among Us, confirm that the page identifies the five-episode season, purchase or install it through your account, and launch the season from your library.
- PlayStation: Check the US PlayStation Store listing or search for the title in your regional PlayStation Store. Confirm the edition and platform shown before downloading.
- Xbox: Check the US Xbox listing or search the Microsoft Store on your console. Verify that the listing exposes the same five-episode season.
- Begin with Faith: Once installed, choose the first episode and continue in the numbered release order. Keep the same save profile if you want your decisions to remain available to later episodes on that installation.
The store page is the final authority for your account’s purchase and download options. A title appearing in a US listing does not guarantee identical licensing, language, pricing, or availability in another country.
What the remaster changes—and what it deliberately leaves alone
Telltale describes the remaster as an update to how the game looks, feels, and presents supplementary material rather than a rewrite of the season. Announced improvements include enhanced visuals, an updated interface, accessibility features, technical improvements, Noir Mode, and more than an hour of behind-the-scenes bonus content.
Rank #2
- From the team that brought you 2012 Game of the Year, The Walking Dead
- Based on the Eisner Award-winning Fables comic book series
- Now, its not only WHAT you choose to do that will affect your story, but WHEN you choose to do it
- A mature and gritty take on characters from fairytales, legends and folklore who have escaped into our world
- A perfect place to begin your Fables journey, even if youve not read the comics; this game is set before the events seen in the first issue
In a PlayStation Blog interview, game director Matt Saia explained the design boundary: “We wanted to honor the Telltale legacy. This is a classic title, and it needed a respectful update. We avoided touching the story, the directorial choices, and the overall art style, those are sacred to us.” The full interview is available at PlayStation Blog.
Enhanced visuals and technical work
The publisher’s description supports a presentation upgrade, but it does not provide independent frame-rate tests, resolution measurements, loading-time comparisons, or a platform-by-platform performance table. Do not choose the remaster on the assumption that it is faster or technically superior in every measurable way; those results have not been established in the cited material.

Interface and accessibility
The remaster is announced with an updated interface and accessibility features. The available announcements do not enumerate every option or state which settings are exclusive to each platform. If you require a particular feature, check the platform listing and the game’s in-game accessibility menu after launch rather than relying on a generic label.
Noir Mode
Noir Mode is highlighted in Telltale’s October 8 launch update. The announcement identifies the mode by name but does not publish a complete technical description of its visual treatment in the cited material. Treat it as an additional presentation option, not as a separate story route.
Behind-the-scenes material
Telltale’s June 15 announcement says the remaster contains more than an hour of behind-the-scenes bonus content. That figure describes the announced supplemental material, not additional playable story episodes.
Where the sequel fits in the timeline
Telltale announced The Wolf Among Us 2 for 2027 and says its story takes place five months after the original game. No specific release day is confirmed in the cited announcement, so “2027” is the usable planning window rather than a date for booking time off or assuming a launch month.
The announcement also describes the remaster as the updated way to revisit the first season while naming all five episodes. You can therefore finish the original now and still understand the sequel’s announced setting; there is no stated requirement to own the remaster before playing The Wolf Among Us 2.
Release plans can change. For the latest dates, use Telltale’s June announcement for the sequel and its October update for the remaster: “The Big Bad Wolf Returns!” and the remaster launch update.
Do you need to read Fables first?
No. Telltale explicitly positions the game as a suitable starting point even if you have not read the Fables comics. The game supplies the information needed to follow its own characters, conflicts, and setting.

The comics remain optional background reading. They can give you more context about the wider world and its characters, but they are not a prerequisite for understanding the five-episode season. If you decide to read them, do so as a companion to the game rather than as homework you must complete before launching it.

Plan A: finish before the remaster
- Install the original from the storefront available to you.
- Start with Faith and play the episodes in release order.
- Keep your save data on the same platform and user profile between episodes.
- Finish Cry Wolf before deciding whether you want to replay the season in the remaster.
This route gives you the complete first story without waiting for a future storefront date. It also lets you approach the remaster as an optional replay with its presentation changes and bonus material.
Plan B: make the remaster your first playthrough
- Wait for October 29, 2026, the announced digital launch date.
- Before buying, confirm that your platform is one of those named by Telltale: PC through Steam or Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, or Xbox One.
- If you use Xbox Series X|S, note that Telltale says the game will be playable through backward compatibility rather than listing a separate native Series release.
- Choose whether to use Noir Mode and review the available accessibility settings before beginning the first episode.
- Play the same five-episode order, then explore the behind-the-scenes material after completing the story if you want to avoid interrupting the narrative.
The remaster’s platform information comes from Telltale’s October 8 update. The cited material does not establish whether every storefront will offer identical editions, languages, or bonus-content packaging.
Plan C: digital now, physical later
You can complete the original digitally and still buy the remaster physically when the announced Q1 2027 window arrives. This is the clearest route for readers who want to experience the story before the sequel while also collecting a retail copy. Because retailer, price, preorder, and exact-date information has not been announced in the cited source, treat the quarter as the only confirmed physical timing.
Platform and availability checks
Use these checks when a listing does not appear or the edition is unclear:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check your country: The cited PlayStation and Xbox pages are US storefronts. Search your own regional store rather than assuming the US product page applies to your account.
- Check the platform generation: The remaster announcement names PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC through Steam and Epic Games Store. Xbox Series X|S compatibility is described through backward compatibility.
- Check the product name: Distinguish the original season from The Wolf Among Us Remastered. A store search can show multiple entries or platform-specific pages.
- Check the episode listing: The original should identify the season and its five named episodes. If a page shows only a trial, add-on, or incomplete product, inspect the edition details before purchasing.
- Check the date: Before October 29, 2026, do not describe the remaster as already available based solely on an announcement page. After that date, confirm the live store page because launch availability can vary by region.
What is not confirmed yet
Several common assumptions are not supported by the cited announcements:
- No specific release day for The Wolf Among Us 2 beyond its 2027 target has been announced.
- No cited source says that the sequel requires a remaster purchase, a completed save file, or a particular ending from the original.
- No independent performance benchmark establishes that the remaster runs at a particular resolution, frame rate, or loading speed on any platform.
- No physical-edition retailer, preorder date, price, or exact Q1 2027 day is established.
- No sales, player-count, review-score, or audience statistic is needed to decide how to play the story, and none is supplied by the cited primary announcements.
These limits do not prevent you from preparing: completing the original season is the only confirmed story prerequisite, and the comics are explicitly optional.
Recommended decision by reader type
| If you are… | Best route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ready to understand the first story now | Play the original immediately | It is a complete five-episode season already listed on current PC and US console storefronts. |
| New to Fables and unsure whether the comics are required | Start the game without the comics | Telltale identifies the game as an entry point for people who have not read the source comics. |
| Most interested in refreshed visuals and usability features | Wait for the digital remaster | The announced update focuses on presentation, interface, accessibility, technical work, Noir Mode, and bonus material. |
| Collect physical editions | Play digitally if you want the story early, then watch for Q1 2027 retail details | The physical remaster is scheduled after the digital launch, with commercial details still unannounced. |
| Planning around the sequel | Finish the original before 2027, using either version | The sequel is targeted for 2027 and is set five months after the original, but has no confirmed day. |
Bottom-line recommendation
Do not wait for the comics or for a confirmed sequel date. If you want the story now, play the original five-episode season in order. If you would rather make your first run on the refreshed presentation, wait for the announced October 29, 2026 digital remaster. Choose the Q1 2027 physical edition only when owning a retail copy is more important than starting before the digital launch.
