The official way to play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker on a Nintendo console today is through the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library on Nintendo Switch 2. You need an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch – OLED Model do not offer this GameCube library route. A GameCube-style controller is supported but optional.
In practical terms, this is a Switch 2 library download rather than a standalone Wind Waker eShop purchase. Once the console, membership and account are ready, you open Nintendo Switch Online, enter Nintendo Classics, choose the Nintendo GameCube library and launch the game there.

At a glance
- Required hardware: Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s GameCube – Nintendo Classics library is exclusive to that system.
- Required service: An active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership on the Nintendo Account used to access the library.
- Menu path: HOME Menu → Nintendo Switch Online → Nintendo Classics → Nintendo GameCube.
- Controller: The standard Switch 2 controller setup works. Nintendo’s dedicated wireless GameCube controller for Switch 2 is optional.
- Excluded systems: The original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and Switch – OLED Model do not provide the GameCube Classics route.
Nintendo describes The Wind Waker as a seafaring adventure in which Link sets out to rescue his sister Aryll, uses the Wind Waker baton to control the winds and sails across the Great Sea. The Switch 2 release gives you access to that GameCube title through Nintendo’s classic-game service.
What you need before starting
Check these requirements before downloading anything:
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo makes the GameCube – Nintendo Classics library exclusive to Switch 2. The original Switch family does not provide access to it. Nintendo’s access guide explains the hardware separation.
- Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack: Your Nintendo Account must have an active membership that includes the GameCube Classics library. Nintendo lists Expansion Pack membership as the requirement for this catalog. Check your local Nintendo site for the current plan name, price and availability.
- Internet access for setup: You must be able to open Nintendo Switch Online and download the Nintendo Classics software and game data. The official instructions do not describe a cartridge release for this library.
- A compatible controller: You can play with the standard Switch 2 control setup. Nintendo describes its dedicated wireless GameCube controller as an optional way to play, not a requirement. Nintendo’s controller FAQ covers supported use.
These requirements are separate. Owning a Switch 2 does not by itself unlock the GameCube library, and subscribing to Expansion Pack on an original Switch does not add GameCube support to that older hardware. The console model and the account’s membership must both qualify.
Which Switch models can run Wind Waker?
| Hardware | Official GameCube Classics access | Wind Waker through this route | What that means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Yes | Yes, with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Download the Nintendo Classics app and select the GameCube library. |
| Original Nintendo Switch | No | No | The GameCube Classics library is not provided on this system. |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | No | No | It does not provide the GameCube Classics route. |
| Nintendo Switch – OLED Model | No | No | The OLED display does not change the original Switch hardware’s library access. |
This is a platform limitation rather than a missing eShop search result. Searching for “Wind Waker” on an original Switch will not unlock the GameCube Classics app, because Nintendo identifies that library as Switch 2-only. The official announcement lists The Wind Waker among the GameCube titles available for Switch 2: Nintendo’s GameCube Classics announcement.
Changing from handheld mode to docked mode, using an OLED screen or reinstalling the Nintendo Switch Online software cannot add the GameCube library to an original Switch. If your current console is a Switch, Lite or OLED model, the official hardware path begins with moving to Switch 2.

Use Nintendo’s menu path rather than looking for a standalone Wind Waker purchase.
- Turn on Nintendo Switch 2 and sign in to the Nintendo Account with Expansion Pack access. If several accounts are on the console, use the account whose Nintendo Switch Online membership includes Expansion Pack. Nintendo’s requirement is an active membership; a standard Nintendo Switch Online plan does not provide the GameCube catalog.
- Open “Nintendo Switch Online” from the HOME Menu. Highlight the Nintendo Switch Online icon and start it. If the app or catalog is unavailable, first confirm that the console is actually a Switch 2 and that the account’s membership has not expired.
- Select “Nintendo Classics.” This is Nintendo’s hub for its classic-game libraries. The exact arrangement can change with software updates, but the support instructions use this label as the entry point.
- Choose the Nintendo GameCube library. Do not select the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64 or other classic systems if your goal is Wind Waker. The game belongs to the GameCube collection.
- Download the GameCube Classics software or library when prompted. Follow the on-screen installation instructions and allow the download to finish. Keep the console connected to the internet during this first setup so the membership and library can be validated.
- Open the GameCube library and select The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. The title is listed in Nintendo’s Switch 2 GameCube collection. Start it from the library app rather than expecting a separate Wind Waker icon on the HOME Menu.
- Choose your controller and begin. The standard Switch 2 controller option is supported. If you own Nintendo’s dedicated wireless GameCube controller for Switch 2, pair it according to the controller’s instructions and select it instead. Nintendo treats that controller as optional.
There are two useful checkpoints in this process. After step one, the account should show active Expansion Pack access. After step five, the GameCube library should be installed before you troubleshoot the individual game. If either checkpoint fails, reinstalling a controller will not solve the underlying issue.
Nintendo describes the game as a seafaring adventure in which Link sets out to rescue his sister Aryll, uses the Wind Waker baton to control the winds and sails across the Great Sea. That context explains why the GameCube title appears in a classic-games library rather than as a new Switch remake: the Switch 2 route is a library release of the GameCube game.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack?
Yes. The GameCube Classics catalog is tied to an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo’s support documentation identifies Expansion Pack as the requirement for accessing the GameCube library: How to Access the Nintendo Classics Game Libraries.
What the membership requirement changes
- A standard Nintendo Switch Online membership by itself is not the GameCube requirement stated by Nintendo.
- Membership access is associated with the Nintendo Account that launches Nintendo Switch Online. If the wrong account is active, the GameCube library may not appear even when another account on the console has a subscription.
- Catalog availability, plan names and prices can differ by country. Nintendo’s reviewed pages include US and English-language information, so check the Nintendo website for your region before purchasing or renewing.
- The GameCube library and its titles can change over time. Confirm that The Wind Waker is still shown in your region’s current GameCube Classics catalog when you are ready to play.
Nintendo’s membership overview is available at Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. That page is the appropriate place to verify current regional plan details rather than relying on an old price or a plan name from another country.
What to check before paying
Nintendo’s pages do not establish one worldwide price, one universal plan label or identical availability in every country. Confirm the membership tier shown on your local Nintendo site, check that it specifically includes the GameCube library and verify which Nintendo Account will be used. This avoids paying for a standard plan that does not meet the documented requirement or subscribing on an account that is not the one launching the app.
The membership is the access condition Nintendo documents for the library. The official pages do not describe a separate Wind Waker cartridge or a one-time standalone purchase that bypasses the GameCube Classics service. For that reason, treat the current catalog and membership status as things to recheck whenever you return to the game after a long break.
Is a GameCube controller required?
No. Nintendo describes the GameCube controller as an optional way to play the collection. You can begin with the normal Switch 2 controller configuration and only add a GameCube-style controller if you prefer its shape or button layout.

| Controller choice | Required? | Best reason to choose it | What Nintendo’s information establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Switch 2 controller setup | No purchase required | You already own the console and want to start immediately. | Wind Waker is playable without treating a GameCube controller as a prerequisite. |
| Nintendo GameCube controller for Switch 2 | Optional | You want a GameCube-style shape and controls. | Nintendo identifies the dedicated wireless controller as an optional way to play and limits it to Switch 2 compatibility. |
The cited Nintendo material does not establish that either controller provides a performance advantage, higher frame rate or different game content. Choose based on comfort, familiarity and availability, not on an expectation of extra features.
If you buy the optional controller, verify that the listing is specifically for the Switch 2-compatible GameCube controller. A controller made for an older console or an unrelated USB adapter is not automatically covered by Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information.
Which controller should a first-time player choose?
Use the standard Switch 2 controller first if you want the lowest-cost, quickest setup. It lets you confirm that the account, library and game all work before you purchase an accessory. Choose the dedicated wireless GameCube controller when its familiar shape is your priority or when you already know you prefer that layout. Nintendo’s cited information supports both as input options but does not promise that one is faster, more accurate or technically superior.
Why Wind Waker is not available on the original Switch
The original Switch, Switch Lite and OLED Model are different from Switch 2 for this purpose. Nintendo’s GameCube Classics service is exclusive to Switch 2, so the absence of Wind Waker from the original Switch’s Nintendo Classics menus is expected.

This also means that changing from handheld mode to docked mode, using an OLED screen or reinstalling the Nintendo Switch Online app cannot add the GameCube library to an original Switch. Those systems can access the classic libraries Nintendo supports for them, but the GameCube catalog is not one of them.
If you own an original Switch and want to use Nintendo’s official current route, the hardware decision comes first: you need a Nintendo Switch 2, then the Expansion Pack membership. Do not buy an optional controller expecting it to overcome the original console’s platform limitation.
Common mistaken assumptions
- “The OLED model should run it because it is newer.” The OLED display upgrade does not make the original Switch hardware eligible for the Switch 2-only GameCube library.
- “A standard online subscription should be enough.” Nintendo specifically identifies the Expansion Pack tier for GameCube Classics.
- “Finding a GameCube controller will unlock the game.” The controller is optional and cannot add the library to unsupported hardware.
- “Wind Waker should appear as its own eShop product.” Nintendo’s documented path places it inside the GameCube Classics library.
Troubleshooting when the GameCube library does not appear
The Nintendo Classics option is missing
- Confirm the console model. The GameCube library is for Nintendo Switch 2, not the original Switch family.
- Open Nintendo Switch Online from the HOME Menu, then select Nintendo Classics. Starting a different classic-system app will not show GameCube titles.
- Check that the signed-in Nintendo Account has an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, rather than only a standard plan.
- Restart the console and reopen Nintendo Switch Online after confirming the account and system. This refreshes the app session without changing your game data.
The library opens, but Wind Waker is not listed
- Make sure you selected the Nintendo GameCube library, not another Nintendo Classics system.
- Check Nintendo’s current catalog for your country. Availability can be regional and can change as the service is updated.
- Verify that the library download completed. An interrupted installation may leave the app present while its game list is incomplete.
- Confirm the account still has Expansion Pack access. If the membership expired or a different account launched the app, the catalog may no longer be available.
The game starts, but the controller does not respond as expected
- Begin with the standard Switch 2 controller configuration to establish that the game itself launches correctly.
- If you use the optional GameCube controller, pair it with Switch 2 using Nintendo’s controller instructions and ensure it is the Switch 2-compatible model.
- Reconnect the controller and relaunch the library if input stops responding. Nintendo’s cited pages establish controller compatibility and optional status, but they do not promise identical button mappings or comfort for every player.
You cannot download the library
- Check the console’s internet connection and available storage using the Switch 2 system settings.
- Keep the console connected until the download and installation finish.
- Reopen Nintendo Switch Online and retry the GameCube library download after confirming the Expansion Pack membership on the correct account.
- If Nintendo’s service is unavailable, wait and try again later; a local reinstall cannot create access when the account or service is unavailable.
You are checking the wrong account
On a shared console, the account that owns or currently carries Expansion Pack access may not be the account first selected on the HOME Menu. Switch to the qualifying account before opening Nintendo Switch Online. If the GameCube option appears for one account but not another, that difference is consistent with Nintendo’s account-based membership requirement.
What to expect from the Switch 2 version
The official material identifies The Wind Waker as part of the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection and describes its original adventure premise. It does not establish a separate remake, a new story campaign, a particular resolution, a frame-rate target, or a performance advantage for one controller. Treat the release as access to the GameCube title through Nintendo’s Switch 2 classic-game service unless Nintendo publishes additional technical details for your region.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The practical benefit is straightforward: once the Switch 2, Expansion Pack membership and Nintendo Classics setup are in place, Wind Waker is launched from the GameCube library rather than from a separate retail listing. Your choice of controller affects how you hold and operate the game, while the membership and console determine whether you can access it at all.
Do not infer extra technical features from the Switch 2 name alone. Nintendo’s cited announcements establish inclusion in the GameCube collection, not a resolution upgrade, frame-rate promise, new content, altered story or special controller mode. If those details matter to your purchase decision, look for a current Nintendo technical announcement for your region instead of relying on assumptions from the original GameCube release.

- Can you open HOME Menu → Nintendo Switch Online → Nintendo Classics → Nintendo GameCube? That is Nintendo’s documented access path.
- Do you own a GameCube controller? Use it if you prefer; it is optional, not a condition for starting Wind Waker.
- Is the title absent? Recheck the console model, account membership, selected library, download status and regional catalog before troubleshooting the controller.
