For a first playthrough, play System Shock (remake) first and then System Shock 2 (or its 25th Anniversary Remaster). The remake retells the first game’s story with modern visuals, controls, interface, music and sound; System Shock 2 is the actual sequel. If you want the original 1990s experience, play System Shock: Enhanced Edition (or the 1994 release) before System Shock 2, then try the remake as a comparison. Neither the Enhanced Edition nor the remake is a second story chapter.

The correct System Shock order at a glance

There are five releases that commonly appear in a System Shock list, but they represent only three story experiences: the original first game, its modern remake, and the sequel. Two of the five are updated editions rather than new chapters.

Release What it is Where it belongs Best choice for
System Shock (1994) The original PC game developed by Looking Glass Studios and released by Origin Systems. First story, original release order Players who want the historical version and period design.
System Shock: Enhanced Edition A modernized edition of the 1994 game. It adds higher-resolution support, mouselook and remappable controls while retaining an option for the Classic presentation. Same story as System Shock (1994) Players who want the original game with less awkward modern playability.
System Shock 2 (1999) The separate sequel, set aboard the Von Braun. Second story Players continuing from either version of the first game.
System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster An updated presentation of System Shock 2, with features including cross-play co-op and mod support listed by Nightdive. Same sequel position as System Shock 2 Players who prefer the updated edition and want its multiplayer or mod features.
System Shock (remake) A full remake of the 1994 game with rebuilt visuals, controls, interface, music and sound. First story; a modern alternative to the 1994 game New players who want the most accessible presentation.

The release-history sequence is System Shock (1994) → System Shock 2 (1999) → System Shock (remake). The remake is listed last there because it was released later, not because the plot requires it to be played after the sequel.

Which order should a new player choose?

Best first-playthrough order: remake, then System Shock 2

Start with the remake if you are unfamiliar with the series or do not normally enjoy older interface conventions. It tells the first game’s story while rebuilding the presentation for contemporary hardware. After finishing it, move to System Shock 2, using either the original release or the 25th Anniversary Remaster depending on which presentation and features you want.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This recommendation is practical guidance rather than an official rule. The remake and sequel were released decades apart and use different systems, so a modern first game gives you a smoother entry without skipping the narrative foundation. System Shock 2 then follows naturally as the continuation rather than as another version of the opening chapter.

Historical order: Enhanced Edition, then System Shock 2

For the series as it developed, choose System Shock: Enhanced Edition first, then System Shock 2. Enhanced Edition preserves the first game’s identity while adding higher-resolution support, mouselook and remappable controls. Its toggle between Enhanced and Classic presentations lets you see more of the original visual treatment without giving up basic usability.

The 1994 release can be substituted if you specifically want the unmodified period experience. Enhanced Edition is not a prequel, side story or intermediate episode; it is still the first System Shock.

Comparison order: original or Enhanced Edition, System Shock 2, then remake

Play the first game in its original form (preferably Enhanced Edition for the controls), continue to System Shock 2, and finish with the remake. This route lets you compare how the same opening premise was interpreted in 1994 and rebuilt decades later. It is the longest route because the first story is experienced twice, so it is best for players interested in design history rather than for anyone trying to minimize repetition.

Why the versions are easy to confuse

The remake is not System Shock 3

The remake revisits the 1994 story. Its new assets and modernized interface can make it look like a new sequel, but it occupies the same narrative position as the original first game. Once you have completed the remake, you have completed the first chapter and should move to System Shock 2.

Enhanced Edition is not a separate entry

Enhanced Edition changes how the 1994 game is displayed and controlled. Nightdive describes higher-resolution support, mouselook, remappable controls and a switch between Enhanced and Classic presentations. Those are edition features, not new plot content. Do not place Enhanced Edition between the first game and the sequel as though it were an extra episode.

The 25th Anniversary Remaster is still System Shock 2

The sequel remaster updates System Shock 2 rather than adding a new installment. Select it wherever you would select the 1999 sequel. Its listed cross-play co-op and mod support may influence which edition you install, but they do not change the order.

What happens in each game

System Shock (1994)

The original is a PC immersive-sim landmark from Looking Glass Studios, released by Origin Systems in 1994. It established the setting, conflict and systems that later releases reinterpret. Its design expects experimentation with the environment, terminals, audio logs, weapons and limited resources rather than a purely linear sequence of fights.

Controls and display conventions can feel unfamiliar on a current computer. If you want the original mechanics and atmosphere without the most dated input scheme, Enhanced Edition is the practical starting point. Choose the Classic presentation inside that edition when historical appearance matters more than its visual improvements.

System Shock: Enhanced Edition

Enhanced Edition is the same first-game adventure in a more usable package. Mouselook replaces the most cumbersome camera handling, remappable controls let you fit the game to a modern keyboard and mouse, and higher-resolution support makes text and interfaces easier to read. The Classic option is useful when you want to compare the updated presentation with the original look.

System Shock 2 (1999)

System Shock 2 is the actual follow-up. You awaken from cryo sleep aboard the Von Braun while the ship is overrun, and the game expands the formula with more explicit role-playing systems. Character development includes military branches, skills, weapons and psionic powers, so your build affects how you solve problems.

The sequel is structurally different from the first game. Expect a stronger progression model and choices about specialization in addition to exploration, logs and environmental problem-solving. You do not need to replay the first game immediately before it, but knowing the first story makes the sequel’s context clearer.

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster

The 25th Anniversary Remaster is the updated way to play the sequel, not a fourth story chapter. Nightdive identifies cross-play co-op and mod support among its features. Those additions matter if you plan to play with people on supported platforms or want an active mod workflow; otherwise, the decision is primarily about which presentation and technical support you prefer.

Because platform availability can change, verify the current listing before buying. The available edition may differ by console, PC storefront, region or release date.

System Shock (remake)

The remake rebuilds the first game rather than simply applying a texture pack. The remake’s updated visuals, controls, interface, music and sound make it the clearest entry point for players who want contemporary presentation. Its role in the story remains the first System Shock, so it should replace—not follow as a required sequel to—the 1994 release.

PlayStation lists the remake’s PS4 and PS5 release date as May 21, 2024. That listing confirms those PlayStation versions; availability on another platform should be checked against that platform’s current store page.

How to pick the right first-game version

Your priority Choose Reason
Modern controls and presentation System Shock remake It rebuilds visuals, controls, interface, music and sound.
Original design with practical controls System Shock: Enhanced Edition It adds mouselook, remappable controls and higher-resolution support while keeping a Classic presentation option.
Unmodified 1994 context System Shock (1994) It is the original PC release and shows the game’s period interface and assumptions.
See both interpretations Enhanced Edition, then remake You can compare the Classic/Enhanced-era design with the rebuilt modern version without treating them as separate story chapters.

There is no story advantage to playing both first-game versions before System Shock 2. The benefit is historical and comparative: you see how the same scenario, pacing and systems translate across generations.

A step-by-step route for the recommended playthrough

  1. Install System Shock (remake). Confirm that your platform’s edition is the remake, not a listing for the 1994 game or Enhanced Edition. On PlayStation, the cited listing covers PS4 and PS5 and gives May 21, 2024 as the release date.
  2. Complete the remake as the first story. Explore logs, terminals and optional areas rather than rushing only through mandatory objectives. The remake’s modern interface is intended to make those systems easier to use, but the underlying experience still rewards investigation.
  3. Choose the sequel edition. Install System Shock 2 or the 25th Anniversary Remaster. Choose the remaster if cross-play co-op or mod support is important to your group and platform; otherwise select the edition currently supported on your system.
  4. Build your character deliberately in System Shock 2. The sequel uses military branches, skills, weapons and psionic powers. Decide whether you want a focused specialization or a broader toolkit before spending scarce upgrade resources.
  5. Use the original first game only as an optional comparison. If the remake makes you curious about the 1994 design, return to the original or Enhanced Edition afterward. This preserves the smoothest first route while still giving you the historical context.

Platform and purchase checks

Edition names are more reliable than artwork when searching a store. A listing may group multiple versions under a franchise page, so read the product description for the exact edition. Look specifically for “Enhanced Edition,” “25th Anniversary Remaster” or “remake” rather than assuming a package is the newest release.

  • Nightdive lists System Shock: Enhanced Edition on Steam, Humble Bundle and GOG. Confirm regional availability and operating-system support in the live listing.
  • PlayStation’s listing identifies the remake for PS4 and PS5 and dates that release to May 21, 2024.
  • Availability for the 1994 original, System Shock 2 and the 25th Anniversary Remaster is not uniform across every console and storefront. Check the target platform before making a purchase decision.
  • Do not assume that owning one edition automatically grants another. A remake and an Enhanced Edition are separate products even though they cover the same first-game story.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Putting the remake after System Shock 2 as a story requirement

The remake’s later release date can make it appear to be a finale. It is actually a retelling of the first game. Playing it after the sequel is fine for comparison, but it is not required to understand a later chapter.

Counting Enhanced Edition as game two

Enhanced Edition is a usability update to the 1994 game. If your list contains both “System Shock (1994)” and “System Shock: Enhanced Edition,” mark them as alternate versions of one entry.

Expecting the sequel remaster to add a new narrative chapter

The 25th Anniversary Remaster occupies the same place as System Shock 2. Its cross-play co-op and mod support are edition features, not evidence of a separate sequel.

Buying by cover art alone

Franchise storefront pages can place old and new releases beside each other. Read the edition label and platform details, especially when selecting between the remake and Enhanced Edition.

Why the series is worth playing in release context

System Shock’s importance is not limited to its plot. Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick described it as pioneering the genre now called immersive sims, combining elements from multiple genres so that player choices matter and the world can be approached flexibly. That design context explains why the original may feel less like a conventional corridor shooter: exploration, interface experiments and system interactions are part of the intended play.

Playing the remake first gives you that structure with modern presentation. Playing the original or Enhanced Edition first shows how the design communicated those ideas with 1990s technology. System Shock 2 then demonstrates how the formula developed into a more explicit role-playing framework with branches, skills, equipment and psionics.

Optional companion material

The Art of System Shock is a full-color hardcover book about the remake, described by Nightdive as an optional visual companion. It is not needed to follow the games and does not alter the play order. Consider it only if you want behind-the-scenes art and visual reference after choosing your game editions.

Personalized order checklist

  • I want the least dated first experience: System Shock remake → System Shock 2 or its 25th Anniversary Remaster.
  • I want the original game with friendlier controls: System Shock: Enhanced Edition → System Shock 2.
  • I want strict release history: System Shock (1994) → System Shock 2 (1999) → System Shock remake.
  • I want to compare both versions of the first game: Enhanced Edition (optionally using Classic presentation) → System Shock 2 → remake.
  • I want co-op or mods in the sequel: Use the 25th Anniversary Remaster if your platform and current listing support the features you need.

Final recommendation

Choose the remake for your first System Shock story, then play System Shock 2. Treat Enhanced Edition as the best bridge to the 1994 original, and treat the 25th Anniversary Remaster as an updated way to play the sequel. Add the original and remake together only when you specifically want to study the series’ design history; they are alternate versions of the first chapter, not consecutive entries.
