Yes, you can try the Soulstonia demo on a Steam Deck through Steam Game Mode, but it is not published as a native SteamOS/Linux game. Install Soulstonia – Demo (Steam app 4448060), launch it, and use Steam’s per-game Proton setting if it does not start normally. Because SteamDB flags mouse-only and touch-only options, keep the touchscreen or trackpads available for interactions that do not map cleanly to a gamepad. No official Deck Verified rating or independent Deck performance result has been established for this demo.

What you need to know before installing

The practical Steam Deck route is the Windows build running through Proton, Steam’s compatibility layer. The official store listing identifies Soulstonia – Demo as a Windows and macOS release; it does not list a native Linux or SteamOS build. That means installation from Steam is straightforward, but compatibility is not guaranteed in the way it would be for a native Deck title.

The demo is published by Gabriel’s Games and appears on Steam as app 4448060. You can install it directly in Game Mode rather than downloading a separate Linux package. If the first launch fails, Steam provides a per-game compatibility override that lets you select a Proton tool.

Install and launch Soulstonia on a Steam Deck

  1. Open Steam in Game Mode. Press the Steam button if necessary and use the Store or Library search to find Soulstonia – Demo.
  2. Open the official demo listing. Confirm that the page is the Gabriel’s Games release and that the title is the demo, not a similarly named entry.
  3. Select Install. The store listing states a minimum Windows storage requirement of 500 MB. Reserve additional free space for Steam’s installation files and normal operating-system overhead rather than treating 500 MB as a recommended free-space target.
  4. Wait for the installation to finish. Return to your Library and select the newly installed demo.
  5. Choose Play. Let the game attempt its normal launch before changing compatibility settings. This gives you a useful baseline and avoids forcing a tool unnecessarily.
  6. Test the opening menus and an interaction. Confirm that the title screen, navigation, and at least one in-game action respond. Some actions may be designed around mouse or touch input rather than a conventional controller.

If the demo opens and responds correctly, you can keep using the default configuration. If it refuses to launch, closes immediately, displays a blank window, or has unusable input, continue with the Proton and control steps below.

Force Proton when the default launch fails

The store page does not document a SteamOS build, so Proton is the practical way to run the Windows version on Deck. Steam Support’s documented override path is per game:

  1. From your Steam Library, highlight Soulstonia – Demo.
  2. Press the Menu button and open Properties.
  3. Select Compatibility.
  4. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  5. Choose the latest Proton release recommended by Steam at the time you are configuring the game.
  6. Close Properties and launch the demo again.

There is no evidence establishing one particular Proton version as the universally correct choice for this demo. Start with the current release Steam recommends, then retest after each change so you know which setting affected the result. If a later Proton update introduces a new problem, returning to the previous working tool is a reasonable troubleshooting step, but the available evidence does not identify a guaranteed fallback version.

After changing compatibility settings, give Steam a clean restart if the launch state appears stuck. Keeping SteamOS current is also sensible because Proton and Steam client behavior change over time. These steps improve the chance of a usable session; they do not convert the demo into a native Linux application or establish official Deck certification.

Make the controls usable on Deck

SteamDB metadata records mouse-only and touch-only options for the demo. That is a configuration signal, not a hands-on test proving that every menu and action works with the built-in controls. Plan to combine the touchscreen, trackpads, and ordinary buttons.

Try the touchscreen first

Use the touchscreen for menus or actions that appear to expect a pointer or direct touch. If a button does not respond to the controls assigned by default, tap it directly and check whether the game advances. Touch input can be especially useful when a cursor is visible but no face button activates the highlighted item.

Use the trackpads as a pointer

The left or right trackpad can provide mouse-style movement when the game expects a cursor. Test clicking with the assigned trackpad press and use the trigger or button that Steam presents as the primary click in the current layout. Exact behavior depends on the active Steam Input configuration, so verify each important action in the demo rather than assuming a desktop-style mapping.

Create a Steam Input layout if the default mapping is awkward

From the game’s controller configuration screen, choose a layout that gives you a mouse-like pointer and a click action, then assign frequently used keyboard or mouse actions to accessible buttons where needed. Keep a simple layout first: pointer movement, primary click, secondary click if the demo uses one, and a way to open or close menus. Add more bindings only after you identify a real missing action.

If a control works in the menus but not in a particular activity, test the touchscreen or pointer again before concluding that the game is broken. The available metadata does not establish full gamepad support, so describe your result as a control configuration that works for your Deck rather than as universal controller compatibility.

What the Soulstonia demo includes

This is not presented as a short, time-limited trial. Gabriel’s Games’ Steam Community announcement says the demo has no playtime cap and no progression cap: “This isn’t a short, time-limited trial. The Demo has no playtime cap and no progression cap, so you can keep exploring, training, crafting, fighting, and building your Summoners for as long as you want.” You can therefore continue using the available content without a stated timer or progress ceiling.

Published feature What the published material says Qualification
World access All five regions are open. Figure published by Gabriel’s Games in 2026.
Character development More than 20 skills can be trained to level 99. Figure published by Gabriel’s Games in 2026.
Story content Act I contains more than 15 quests. Figure published by Gabriel’s Games in 2026.
Progress and playtime No playtime cap and no progression cap are stated for the demo. Statement from Gabriel’s Games’ Steam Community announcement.
Game format Single-player cozy fantasy RPG with direct-control or idle goals, gathering, crafting, combat, exploration, and creature summoning. Description from the Steam store listing.

These are the published boundaries of the demo, not a promise that every activity will be equally comfortable with Deck controls. The no-cap statement describes access to the demo’s content; it does not imply that the SteamOS version has been formally certified.

Published requirements versus Steam Deck compatibility

The listed requirements are for the supported desktop platforms. They help indicate the intended scale of the game, but they are not a Deck performance test.

Platform or status Published information What it means on Deck
Windows Windows 10 or Windows 11; 8 GB minimum memory; 500 MB minimum storage. The Windows build is the one Proton would run. The storage figure is a minimum listing value, not a recommended amount of free Deck space.
macOS macOS 14 is listed. The macOS requirement does not provide a Linux or SteamOS compatibility path.
Linux/SteamOS No native Linux or SteamOS build is documented. Use Proton through Steam if you want to test it on Deck.
Deck Verified status No official rating was identified for this demo. Do not treat installation or a successful launch as an official Verified result.

Steam Support describes four Deck compatibility categories: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Without an official rating for this specific demo, the responsible description is “untested or not officially rated,” not “Verified,” “Playable,” or “Unsupported.” A missing rating is not proof that the demo fails, and a successful personal launch is not proof that Valve has certified it.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Action to try What the result tells you
The demo will not start Open Library > Menu > Properties > Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, select the latest Proton release recommended by Steam, and relaunch. You are testing the Windows build through Proton instead of relying on the default selection.
The launch appears stuck after changing settings Exit and restart Steam, then try the launch again. Keep SteamOS current. A clean client session removes a stale launch state; it does not guarantee compatibility.
Menus do not react to buttons Try the touchscreen and trackpads, then create a Steam Input layout with pointer movement and click actions. The behavior may reflect the demo’s mouse-only or touch-only options rather than a missing game file.
The game runs but feels too demanding Lower the in-game graphics settings, following Steam Support’s general troubleshooting guidance. This may reduce rendering load, but no published Deck frame-rate result is available.
An individual action cannot be selected Move the pointer with a trackpad or tap the target directly. Check whether the action requires a different Steam Input binding. You are testing the input method the metadata suggests the demo may expect.

Change one variable at a time. For example, first test the latest Proton tool with the default controls, then test touchscreen input, and only then build a custom layout. This makes it easier to identify whether the problem is launch compatibility or input mapping.

How to judge your own result

Use a short, repeatable check instead of judging the demo solely by whether its title screen appears:

  • Does the game reach its main menu after a normal launch or after the Proton override?
  • Can you move through menus with at least one reliable method: buttons, touchscreen, or trackpad?
  • Can you start an activity and complete an interaction such as exploring, gathering, crafting, fighting, or managing a Summoner?
  • Does the display remain stable after several menu transitions?
  • Can you lower graphics settings if the initial presentation is not smooth?

A “yes” to these checks means the demo is usable in your configuration. It still should not be reported as officially Deck Verified, because the available evidence does not identify a Valve rating or a standardized performance result.

What is confirmed and what remains unknown

Confirmed by the published listings

  • The Steam title is Soulstonia – Demo, app 4448060.
  • Gabriel’s Games is identified as the developer and publisher.
  • The demo is listed for Windows and macOS, with Windows 10/11, macOS 14, 8 GB minimum memory, and 500 MB minimum Windows storage shown in the published requirements.
  • The demo advertises five open regions, more than 20 trainable skills with a level-99 ceiling, and more than 15 Act I quests.
  • The announcement says there is no playtime cap and no progression cap.

Not established by the available evidence

  • A native Linux or SteamOS version.
  • An official Deck Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown badge for this demo.
  • A specific Proton version that is guaranteed to work for every Deck.
  • Universal full-gamepad support.
  • A measured frame rate, battery-life result, loading-time result, or graphics preset recommendation for Steam Deck.

Keeping these boundaries clear matters when sharing setup advice. “It launched for me with Proton” is a useful personal configuration report; it is not the same as a compatibility certification or a performance benchmark.

Recommended first attempt

For the least complicated test, install the demo in Game Mode and launch it once with Steam’s default compatibility choice. If it fails, apply the documented Compatibility override and select the latest Proton release Steam recommends. Once the game opens, test a menu with the touchscreen or trackpad before spending time on a custom controller layout. Keep SteamOS updated, restart Steam after a failed or changed launch, and lower graphics settings if the presentation is poor.

That procedure gives you the best-supported route currently documented for trying the Soulstonia demo on Deck while being honest about the limits: the game is a Windows/macOS release with no published native SteamOS build, input may require pointer-style controls, and an official Deck rating has not been established.
