For a straightforward playthrough, follow the games in the order they were released: Silent Hill (1999), Silent Hill 2 (2001), Silent Hill 3 (2003), Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004), Silent Hill: Origins (2007), Silent Hill: Homecoming (2008), Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (2009–10), Silent Hill: Downpour (2012), and Silent Hill: Book of Memories (2012). Release order is not the same as the series’ in-universe chronology, and regional launch dates can differ.

Silent Hill games in release order

This practical list covers the major console games. The chronology’s historical dates are drawn largely from the specialist fan site Silent Hill Memories, which notes that it is unaffiliated with Konami; dates therefore reflect title release periods, not one universal regional launch calendar.

  1. Silent Hill (1999). The original PlayStation game. Konami gives its Japanese release date as March 4, 1999; North American and European releases followed later that year. Konami
  2. Silent Hill 2 (2001). Play this before Silent Hill 3 for release order, even though the numbering might suggest otherwise.
  3. Silent Hill 3 (2003).
  4. Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004).
  5. Silent Hill: Origins (2007).
  6. Silent Hill: Homecoming (2008). Regional releases fell in different months.
  7. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (2009–10). Its release year depends on platform and territory.
  8. Silent Hill: Downpour (2012).
  9. Silent Hill: Book of Memories (2012). Its release timing, like Downpour’s, varied by region.

Where the newer releases fit

Later releases expand the franchise beyond the major console sequence. Include them after the 2012 games when you want a broader release-order survey; their formats are not all conventional standalone games.

  • P.T. / Silent Hills playable teaser (2014). P.T. was a playable teaser associated with the announced Silent Hills project, not a completed full game.
  • Silent Hill: Ascension (2023). An interactive streaming experience rather than a conventional standalone game.
  • Silent Hill: The Short Message (2024).
  • SILENT HILL 2 remake (2024). This is a separate release from the original 2001 game. Konami describes it as a full remake and lists PS5 and PC/Steam; its official portal later announced Xbox and Windows availability. Konami: SILENT HILL 2 Konami portal
  • SILENT HILL f (2025). Set in 1960s Japan. Konami lists PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC storefronts. Konami: SILENT HILL f
  • SILENT HILL: Townfall (2026). Konami’s current portal lists it as available, but the reviewed official pages do not establish a first release date by market. Konami portal

Other releases include the Japan-only Silent Hill: Play Novel (2001), as well as mobile and arcade titles. These are relevant to an exhaustive franchise chronology, but not necessary for the major-console playthrough above. The historical chronology records regional versions separately. Should you play the original or the Silent Hill 2 remake?

For release order, keep the 2001 Silent Hill 2 in its original place, then treat the 2024 remake as a distinct later release. The remake is a modern option if you want to play on a currently listed platform: Konami’s materials identify PS5 and PC, with later Xbox and Windows availability announced on its portal. That convenience does not mean the remake reproduces the original experience exactly, or replaces it in the historical sequence.

What release order does—and does not—tell you

Release order answers when each game or related interactive release appeared, not when its story events happen within the fictional timeline. It is a useful way to encounter the franchise’s changing releases without trying to impose a single story chronology. The first four main console entries arrived in 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2004, respectively.

For current platform support, consult Konami’s official page for the specific title: listed availability can change, and an “available” label does not establish that every platform has a physical edition.
